NOTE FROM THE EDITOR... As many of us have discovered, COVID whilst annoying, has been liberating in revealing some great new ideas and very creative ways to keep Christmas alive. Sure there has been some sad disappointments because we have had to change and some of that came at an expense for many businesses. But, the excitement that builds around cultivating new ways can’t be ignored.

The What’s On Digest website is updated daily as events are made known to us, plus we are always communicating with the organizers. Check back often to stay busy over the season. Happy winter and holidays to all our organizers, visitors and readers. Stay safe, be kind.

LESSONS & PROGRAMS ALPINE SKI, SNOWBOARD & NORDIC CROSS-COUNTRY SKI Mount Washington’s team of professional instructors have always provided utmost support and guidance for all ages through every step of the ski or snowboard learning journey, and that will be highlighted now more than ever. Lessons and programs have been adapted for physical distancing and required face-coverings, as well as to allow more self-paced learning options, smaller class sizes, and shorter lessen durations to reduce the number of needed indoor breaks. Lessons are available for: Tots: 4-6 years Children: 7-12 years Youth: 13-18 years Adult: 19+ years Unsure of you or your child’s ability level? Head to mountwashington.ca to review Progression Guides and learn more on ski lessons and programs. FIRST-TIME SKI & SNOWBOARD LESSONS

“New to the sport?”

New to the sport? The mountain offers a variety of first-time lesson options with follow ups to ensure your progression. Discover Ski or Snowboard Packages. Welcome to the sport of skiing, snowboarding, or classic or skate cross-country skiing! Discover lessons are designed for those who have never participated in either sport before. Learn to Turn or Glide Programs. Mount Washington’s “Learn to Turn” and “Learn to Glide” programs are a combination of 3 popular Photo: Jen Dykstra

programs, to help you get out on the slopes and trails faster and with more confidence. “Learn to Turn/Glide” includes a combination of the above Discover Ski, Snowboard or Cross-Country package, along with a few more group lessons and all your rentals, plus lift or trail tickets. Talk about progression. Save up to 50% compared to purchasing separately, details differ depending on age group. Private Lessons lessons with a dedicated coach is the best way to improve your technique. If you are looking to take your skills to the next level or want to fine-tune your turns one-on-one, then consider taking a private lesson with one of our expert instructors. Plus, you get lift line priority, which means more time on the snow and less in the line up. Group Lessons are a fun way to learn with others of similar ability. To follow physical distancing group lesson class sizes have been reduced with more self-paced learning options. The Pro Instructors are trained to deal with splits in classes to keep the learning environment fun and active for everyone, at a more accessible cost than a private lesson.

“...the best way to improve your technique.”

ALPINE EQUIPMENT RENTALS The mountain rents almost everything needed for a fun day out on the slopes. Full gear packages including skis, or a snowboard, boots and poles are all available. Guests can choose daily rentals or season-long rental option. New this year, an additional rental pick-up location is available at the Comox Valley Visitor Centre to reduce indoor traffic at mountain locations and allows guests with vehicles to go directly to one of the various parking lots right to the chairlifts. In addition to gear packages, helmets are also available to rent, but guests need to bring other accessories like waterproof outerwear, goggles, and gloves. All

bookings will need to be made online or over the phone, at least a few days in advance of arrival. The Rossignol Demo Centre is located near the base of the Eagle Express chairlift. The Demo Centre is an excellent opportunity for guests to learn about the latest technology behind skis, boards and boots from the mountains team of gear experts. To put all that new knowledge to use, a fleet of Rossignol demo skis and snowboards will be available so guests will have the opportunity to take the gear out for a test drive. The Demo Centre also provides fullservice Boot fitting and repair tech services.

JOKE

It’s the day before Christmas and the butcher is just locking up when a man pounds on the door. “Please let me in,” says the man, “I forgot to buy a turkey and my wife will kill me if I don’t come home with one.” “Okay,” says the butcher. “Let me see what’s left.” He goes into the freezer and discovers that there’s only one scrawny turkey left. He brings it out to show the man. “That one’s too skinny. What else have you got”? says the man. The butcher takes the bird back into the freezer and waits a few minutes then brings the same turkey back out to the man. “Oh no,” says the man, “that one doesn’t look any better. You better give me both of them.”

CAMPBELL RIVER ROADTRIP The North Island presents a wild beauty with its wild storms, miles of forests and trails, and multiple pockets of lakes with frozen waterfalls. The north holds the best in Canadian wild adventures. For the Holiday season, Campbell River traditionally celebrates with a giant Truck Parade

that trails along the island Highway for an approximate 8kms. Museums and Halls are filled with decorated trees and craft markets, Christmas parties and shops are buzzing. However, things will be a little different in 2020, but the season is as intrinsic as the trees that stand sparkling with the frost of each morning. Tree light ups, craft markets and virtual gatherings

Meet Teri Nordstrom

Beehive Cafe's Pastry Chef

Many will recognize Teri who has been a professional pastry chef for thirty plus years and has spent the last six years working exclusively for Broadstreet. With the onset of COVID-19 when all kitchens re-structured, Teri has found her new home at Beehive Cafe and now the community at large can savour some of her gourmet and delicious baking. Beehive re-opened it’s doors early October with a new twist on the menu of savoury and sweet pastries, soups, gourmet sandwiches,

breakfast wraps, and buns. Plus still serving the high end Italian Milano Coffee. Each day offers something a little different from seasonal drinks to sausage rolls, pot pies and to die for cinnamon buns. Teri’s vision for the much loved cafe is two fold, one for now COVID and one for the after, both bring back quality pastry cooking that warms the soul.

COMOX VALLEY ROADTRIP The Comox Valley is often coined art and culture central for Vancouver Island. During the winter, art galleries, studio tours, theatres and culinary delights take the stage to celebrate the season. Nestled at the base of Mount Washington, Forbidden Plateau, and the Comox Glacier the city sees visitors from all over the world take a trip to the Comox Valley whether it is to ski or dine or take in the shopping. The Comox Valley will still see many of it’ usual christmas events, however they will be stretched out over days with crowd restrictions. Parades and Moonlight madness will

have to wait for another year, however many businesses are working on some wonderful surprises and treats for their shoppers.

NANIAMO ROADTRIP Nanaimo has three very distinct features, enveloping Old Town feel surrounded by cafe’s and restaurants along side the buzz of the harbour front and marina life to the newer contemporary Nanaimo that you find on the north end. Theatre life, music, comedy and shows are part of the abundant life that living on the path edge to the mainland brings to mainland travellers. Home too many craft breweries, history walks and local farmers, Nanaimo is the hub of the island. You can disappear quickly out of the city into the hills and wander amongst waterfalls, and superb hiking trails. Golf courses are open with almost perfect mild conditions all year round. Each Christmas the town comes to life with Markets, parades, christmas pantomimes, starlight shopping and yes, the christmas light cruise boat parade. Many of these events are happening on a lighter scale for 2020, we have captured some here but there will be more as they are confirmed and approved. Check the What’s On Digest website for Nanaimo updates.

Many families that have been self sufficient are suddenly coping with lean times. For those facing a financial crunch, everyday living is challenging, but more so at Christmas. The toy drive has been godsend for the Society of Organized Services (SOS) Toy Shop Christmas program. It has been running since 2009, and thousands of people look forward to attending the event as way to kick off the festive season, bringing with them a new, unwrapped gift or donation and receiving a free breakfast. The toys gathered at Tigh-Na-Mara’s annual event help fill the toy shop at SOS and cash donations are used to buy grocery store gift cards.

SOS Executive Director, Susanna Newton said they anticipate the needs to be greater this year in light of the pandemic, but she is also confident ongoing community support will allow them to continue to provide essential services to residents. Paul Drummond, General Manager at Tigh-Na-Mara agrees with Newton and said the pandemic has made the fundraiser even more necessary, and his team of elves have figured out a way to make the magic happen. “We feel the need in our community may be even higher than it was 12 years ago when we initiated the Toy Drive Breakfast. Merridale at the farm is now home to an al fresco eatery, tasting bar, store, brick oven bakery, cidery, distillery, and vinegar shack. Further landscaping of the property also allowed for the addition of a pond, gazebo and two well-appointed yurts, creating a new reason to visit.
