COVID-19 has become an unusual catalyst for businesses and tour groups to re-think their operation and just who their customers are likely to be. At a time that we see an influx of international visitors the current customer is Canadian and local, this is proving to be very insightful. Residents of Campbell River and Comox Valley are fortunate to live in a destination area and instead of planning to leave to other areas, the plan has switched to exploring local within a fifty kilometer radius. The north island is and has become the new adventure with no lack of surprises. From Dining, to shopping and immersing yourselves in nature either on the water amongst the Orca and Humpback or wrapped in age old cedar forests with breath taking waterfalls and hidden swimming holes. Fall promises to bring equal exploration with Fall markets, tastings with wineries in harvest, fly fishing and colourful hikes. Visiting each community and supporting businesses for shopping and services is not just about being a good sport its about being proud of where we live. Locals are invited to plan a day trip with their bubble and post their explorations on their social media with the following hashtags: #ExploreNextDoor, #MeetYourNeighbours, #MeetOurNeighbours, and #ExploreBC To launch the campaign, and as a true example, Mary Ruth Snyder, Executive Director of the Campbell River Chamber, spent a day exploring the Comox Valley and Dianne Hawkins, CEO of the Comox Valley Chamber, spent day exploring Campbell River. Both day trips were filmed by Unveil Studios, a Comox Valley Chamber member. You can go online to www.whatsondigest.com and see 100’s of things to do all year round. *hint* DON’T MISS THE SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EVENTS!

We are in this together...

Stonehouse Teas

Celebrates 25 Years in Campbell River

Since 1995 we have been sipping on the vast flavours of Stonehouse Teas. The store was the conception of Tanya Hofer, who started as a home based business and appeared at the farmer’s market for many years. After a short stint in the Pier Street area, Tanya made the leap to 11th ave in 2005 and concreted her vision when she opened the now very famous Stonehouse Teas. The word Stonehouse is actually Tanya’s maiden name and was very fitting for a tea store. Christine Lilyholm a friend of Tanya’s, had worked with her in a different capacity before the tea business and had on occasion helped out in the store. Known in the community as a full time Chef and culinary instructor, Christine had become more than intrigued with the blending and creation of memorable teas. By 2016, Tanya was ready to retire from the tea business and the opportunity for Christine to own Stonehouse had emerged. With the intention to work in the back, create flavours, and continue teaching at the college everything except ‘the plan’ happened. Just a month after taking possession of the store, Christine’s father fell ill and Tanya was called in for support to keep the business going until Christine took the reigns back full time early 2017. Then her position at the college changed in 2018 and the new “plan” developed.

Christine’s vision was to expand and grow by enhancing and spreading the already very strong foundation that Tanya had created. Many things started to evolve that were new and exciting and captured Campbell River-ites quickly. The tea culture had exploded! New flavours were added to Bubble Tea menu, Signature Tea blends were created to highlight other businesses, increased distribution outlets were happening with the popular “Where is Christine having tea” contest and Happy Hours were blazing a new pace in how we approach drinking and enjoying tea. As a Chef and a savvy business woman Christine took to the streets, creating neighbourhood relationships and family fun events that gave every age a chance to become familiar with the more than 120 varieties of quality loose leaf tea. Before long, tea beers in conjunction with Beach Fire Brewing, tea martinis at festive events, Dave’s bakery created tea macaroons, and tea soaps from RavenSong Soap started appearing, tea had become more than a beverage! Tea accessories, novelties and drinking containers hot or cold were all part of the progress and the excitement that permeates around them. In 2019 Christine introduced the signature Campbell River Tea blend and CR ‘Fog’ (latte style), a perfect collection of what emanates Campbell River. This tea has now reached several nations and continues to be sipped world wide.

17

Over the last 3 years, Stonehouse Teas’ website has expanded to a wide range of goods which has been instrumental in accelerating the business and making the brand and all its goods a household name. The amazing staff at Stonehouse are an essential part of making your visit memorable and have been working with Christine for a long time. Having a captain like Christine means very little downtime, and every day is swelling with new ideas and implementations. A COVID pandemic was just another adjustment and was embraced as an opportunity to evolve. The result, local delivery options, more community collaborations, a take-out window, expanded window shopping and more products online.

After several awards Stonehouse Teas has become an icon business in Campbell River. The 25th anniversary will be met with it’s own Signature Tea Blend, a Tea Beer, custom Chocolate Bar, Signature Tea Soap, custom Coffee Blend and a specially marked Libre tea infuser celebrating 25 years. Celebration events will take place between September 14th-19th. There will be more surprises announced on Facebook and Instagram. From Christine and staff thank you Campbell River for expressing your confidence in the wild ride we call Stonehouse Teas. Written by Cathy Kaardal

live theatre takes a

180 turn to re-open. For the theatre industry where the crowds create the culture of the theatre, the options appear very limited when the people are not able to attend. The What’s On Digest took a deep look at the new playing field for both the Tidemark and the Sid Williams Theatre which have for years created spaces that invited people in to a full experience of sound, lighting and special effects amplified by the audience of our two communities. On the announcement of COVID-19 shut-downs, both theatres faced the enormous task of cancelling hundreds of performances, reimbursing 1000’s of transactions or issuing credits. After the initial work was done it was full swing to re-engage the public and figure out how. Jim Kent the managing and technical director of the Tidemark has a history of technical and production knowledge and with the staff they managed to hone in on the key change which was the delivery of performances. Jim, who is driven by

solution finding, went down copious worm holes of technical solutions, they knew the technology was there, making them happen along with the steep learning curves was going to be challenging. Deborah Renz, managing director of the Sid Williams had a different approach by considering utilizing the theatre in different ways. Having a building that was built for 500 but could now only be used by 50 people was challenging, Deborah says. It became obvious that technology was going to fill the gaps. The theatres were collaborative in findings of technology and equipment however, both with similar commitments to be safe, they proceeded at different paces to achieve new structures and procedural outcomes. Turning to live streaming equipment meant it had to be better than a webcam on the kitchen table, there is no room for that in the theatre, Jim says. Eventually the right mix of screens, cameras and technology was found that could bring enhanced live

shows, not just good shows, it had to be sensational. Fortunately both theatres had access to (ICET) Island Coastal Economic Trust funding that enabled them to purchase the equipment needed to get to work. Together with some BC Art and Culture funding, the installing and learning began quickly. Jim at the Tidemark with the help of staff had the benefit of launching their Summer Film Camps, Jim says, July 6th the equipment arrived, July 7th the Cameras by July 11th we were recording. The theatre came alive with seventeen young students that participated in production lights, sound, scripting and acting, this all became part of the experiments and practice. The Sid Williams also benefited from bringing in older students to help with singing, performing and acting so live streaming skills could become seamless. There will now be three types of events, Hybrid, Live Streamed, Virtual. The plan to create a hybrid performance where the audience is half live, and the balance of the audience in watching by live streaming exceeds all expectations. Live theatre,

Music, lectures and gatherings of any sort could all be managed with a hybrid model of delivery. Essentially this meant that the theatre could be more accessible beyond the ‘soldout’ limitations. Not just entertainers and performances could benefit, but now businesses, lectures and other streaming improvising could open the doors on a greater use of the theatres. Still in its early stages the key word is to be ‘nimble'. For both theatres the hybrid model starts with 40-50 people in the theatre for a set ticket price and the balance of the audience live streaming for shows that are approximately 90 minutes long. In house hygiene procedures with staff, volunteers and the community has been put in place and lots of cool funky signage to help you find your way. Safe and healthy is paramount for all of these solutions to work in keeping the theatres successful. Tickets available online, 2 pricing points for hybrid shows.

a word from the editor... First I must say, congratulations to all the businesses and event organizers that have taken on a Mount Everest in improvising and pivoting your operations to move forward. It’s heartwarming and just makes me more determined to keep going so we can support you. The What’s On Digest going forward will start to look a little different. To work with event and activity organizers as we manage each challenge, we need to be more flexible with how and when we deliver the event and activity information. Now as things evolve more events will appear online than in our magazine, we have thousands of subscribers island wide, that look forward to what is coming up. For the rest of the year, we will be joining the Campbell River and Comox Valley editions together to help stimulate local and neighbouring support for businesses and to promote each city as it flourishes into a new era. This also means we will be distributing bi-monthly into both cities with the one issue. The next issue is the November / December issue that will be delivered by Canada Post in the Courtenay region and display locations in the Campbell River area. Deadline for this issue will be October 24th. The Summer Staycation issue was received with much delight and has reached thousands of island and BC residents, who used the information well, thank you everyone for your stories. After such a great reception we have decided to print a WINTER edition so you can keep up with all the Island Christmas markets, light shows, snow events and much more. The deadline for this issue will be October 26th. Health and Happiness , Cathy Kaardal, President, What’s On Digest Vancouver Island.

Be our guest for an unforgettable experience.
