» Celebrating 100+
New Business OF 2018 Campbell River business kicked off the year well by winning the 2018 “Open for Business” award, which celebrates communities that have created a business-friendly culture that encourages small business growth. Small business continues to be a significant economic driver for our city. Getting the projects through the system and to completion seems to be the theme for 2018. The city council continues to expedite red tape to push housing and business growth. The tough projects such as the boat ramp and the revitalization of the Roberts Reach, aka the ‘dust bowl’ were met with perseverance to structure and implementation of new strategies to make way for more fast tracking of major city projects. This has not been done without strong collaboration with City, Department of Fisheries, Environmental and partnerships with the First Nations Band and community groups such as Rotary. This is all good news for business and tourism, add the installing of a high speed broadband fibre optic internet service, and Campbell River is set to attract greater business growth for small and large businesses, which will hold the economy steady for the future. Point Of Sale Payment Processing with Stephanie Forrest from
POS West Stephanie is our hands on local hero when it comes to supplying and servicing your point of sale and payment processing needs. Stephanie says that a lot of people don’t know the options available to them, or the best way to avoid extra costs. These days all businesses, whether brick and mortar or virtual, need some sort of payment processing system. The traps lay often in the complex sales pitches and systems that have no support if there is a problem down the road. There are dozens of fees and rates depending on the system that you may not need to pay. Stephanie will work with you and give you options for what you really need that is efficient and affordable. Technology is ever changing and new products are offered all the time. Options range from counter and desktop terminals, online shopping carts, virtual terminals, mobile/portable payments, recurring payments, or invoices paid online via web link. One of the newest devices suited for small mobile businesses is a credit and debit card processing machine that tethers to your cell phone. You can use it anywhere you have cell service! Our merchants are able to access our customer service team 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You do not have automation or long waits to get your problem resolved. Our phones are answered by a human for same day service.

RAVEN SONG
Soap & Spa with Valerie Lamirande
Born and raised on Haida Gwaii, a remote island group on the north coast of British Columbia, Valerie Lamirande is proud of her Haida heritage and enjoys expressing her culture and memories through soap design with colour, scent and texture. Always looking for an artistic outlet, Valerie has dabbled in countless arts and crafts but none were an obvious match for her creative spirit. In the spring of 2003 a friend gave her a bar of handmade soap and a passion was born. Every free moment was spent taking courses, attending conferences, studying aromatherapy, and making soap. In 2013 Valerie retired from the corporate world to pursue soap making full time.
“Soap making has enabled me to bridge my passion with my heritage, my travels and my experiences... My mother once told me to tell my stories with my soap – this has resonated as a way to maintain memories of my childhood on Haida Gwaii, my travels and my life experiences.” This luxury soap is made entirely by hand in the cold process tradition. Stirring, blending, pouring, cutting, trimming, and wrapping each unique bar. “I believe when you begin with beautiful ingredients such as shea butter and mango butter, olive and almond oil, goats’ milk, yogurt and buttermilk, honey, activated charcoal clays, and essential oils – you can create beautiful soap. This also ensures that RavenSong Soap will be a luxurious way to pamper yourself and others every day.” Join one
of our soap making classes in 2019 to create your own unique soap.

YOUR ISLAND KITCHEN DEPOT with Priscilla Wood and Kathy Gellerman
My ugly frying pan... That’s what I call this superior piece of carbon steel which is commonly used in restaurant kitchens, and now homes. It’s very similar to the cast iron except that it is very light in comparison. We often are asked what is the best “nonstick” fry pan, and the Magnum, aka “ Ugly Fry Pan” is always my answer, which is usually followed by a sideways look and a raised eyebrow. I get it that it’s ugly. Its not a fancy blue or rose gold speckled non-stick name brand with a high price tag kinda pan. But trust me, this pan will sear, saute, caramelize, brown, braise, and out last the others. Lets face it, how many of you have bought a non-stick pan that stops being non-stick? We all have. They start off great, you’re careful to only use silicone and nylon utensils, until someone comes along and stabs the bacon with a fork and now you have a scratch!! Or you’re rushing to
get dinner on the table and bump up the heat on that delicate pan, now you’ve created a build up that in turn will cause things to stick. Now your out trying to replace that non-stick pan AGAIN! This time take a lesson from the pro’s. Most chefs are all about functionality and efficiency. They know what works best and cost less in the long run. With carbon steel you can use any utensil and it will not scrape the surface. Carbon steel can also withstand any heat, so use it on your stove top, in the oven, and on the grill. Its one of the most versatile cooking materials and only gets BETTER with age. That said, seasoning the pan before use is a MUST DO for this pan to keep all its bragging rights. Oh and did I mention that carbon steel cost less than most premium non-stick cookware? Like alot less.
900A 12th Avenue, Campbell River 1 (250) 850 1562
So come in and see us, Im always excited to tell people about this ugly frypan.

The Future is Here in Campbell River with Geoff Wilson from
ISLAND 3D PRINTING The concept of printing something that you can toss around like a ball still seems a little out of this world. Right? But today, 3D printing has a become a very real tool in science, architecture, engineering and anyone that is a bit tech savvy can make what ever they desire. Geoff Wilson has been working in the Information Technology industry as a specialist in computer networking, servers and security for over 25 years. When the opportunity became available to bring 3D printers into the home, Geoff didn’t waste anytime experimenting, with not just commercial ideas, but also fun ones. Geoff, with his wife and two children have made everything from toys to parts that are no longer available and have helped complete a collector’s item, or bring a broken appliances back to working order. Geoff says, “being on the edge of technology is always exciting”, and making things that are unavailable or just don’t exist allows an endless stream of creativity and innovation. 3D printing has come in handy for a lot of companies for prototypes, developing tools, or designs. It has increased significantly in its popularity in the last 3 to 5 years and the cost of owning one has become far less cost prohibitive. The materials used are constantly evolving. He primarily uses PLA filament, a bio-degradable product, which is very strong and durable and isavailable in multiple colours. Other materials are also available to address specific needs.

A woman meant to call a record store, but dialed the wrong number and got a private home instead. "Do you have 'Eyes of Blue' and 'A Love Supreme?'" she asked. "Well, no" answered the puzzled homeowner. "But I have a wife and eleven children."
"Is that a record?" the caller inquired, puzzled in her turn. "I don't think so" replied the man. "But it's as close as I want to get."
