Martin has worked in Nanaimo & the surrounding areas as a Realtor for more than 15 years with hundreds and hundreds of very happy clients. His ‘Promise lots & Deliver more’ philosophy coupled with an unrelenting drive to always do it better has created an energy and brand ideology that buyers and sellers find refreshing and contagious. In Martin’s words, ‘I’m just never happy with the status quo. If there is a better way to market or present a property or represent a buyer or seller, I’ll research it and adopt the best parts…’

Fitness tip As some of you know I have been pregnant for the last 10 months. My Husband and I recently welcomed our brand-new baby boy in the beginning of January. I often get asked the question when should you stop or start training while pregnant? As a pre and postnatal training specialist, I can tell you, it depends entirely on your pregnancy. For example, for the first few weeks of pregnancy most women experience morning sickness or, like me, “all-day” sickness. We, as women, experience everything differently and what may work for some, may not work for others. For me, exercise always made me feel better. Although, I did have to take a few steps back and alter my style of training. There are some exercises, as you get further along in your pregnancy, that you will want to avoid. If you have specific questions or want some advice,

TheatreOne’s Mainstage presents Comedy Drama Person of Interest Written and performed by Melody A. Johnson Directed by Rick Roberts Thursday to Saturday, February 7-9, 2019 VIU’s Malaspina Theatre

“LOL infuriating good times with neighours from hell in Melody A. Johnson’s quirky, edgy, sharply observed Person of Interest.” – Life with more cowbell Twitter review Nanaimo – TheatreOne’s Mainstage presents the comedy drama Person of Interest by Melody A. Johnson Thursday to Saturday, February 7-9 at VIU’s Malaspina Theatre. Inspired by the true story of an event that happened on Johnson’s street in Little Poland, Person of Interest is a one-woman tale of a neighbourly dynamic gone wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong.

MAinstage A Comedy Drama about a good neighbour ...gone bad!

by Melody A. Johnson

Typecast as a “housebound loser”, this is the mostly true story of an actor driven to the brink. Person of Interest is storytelling at its best, told simply and skillfully; this original play will strike a chord with anyone who has ever lived, loved or battled with neighbours. “Melody A. Johnson proves once again, she is the kook supreme of the Canadian stage…I truly would pay money to see Johnson read the phone book…” – Richard Ouzonian, The Toronto Star Tickets are $30 or $15 for students from theatreone.org and 250-754-7587. Group rates $25/ person for groups of 8 or more.

PET TIP Vomiting…serious or not? Vomiting in a dog can mean something as simple as “I ate something dumb and now I feel sick” or it can mean something more serious, like “I ate something dumb and now it’s stuck”. Vomiting in dogs can also mean a problem with other organ systems like the liver, kidneys, or pancreas. It is almost impossible to distinguish one problem from the other with a history of “vomiting”.

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

How do you know when it’s time to go to the vet? And how do you know when your friend needs help RIGHT NOW vs tomorrow. The first thing to do is follow your instinct. If your friend is lethargic, not wanting to lift his head, or not caring to eat or drink…that’s pretty serious. Think how sick you would need to feel if you couldn’t be convinced to get out of bed. You know your friend…is he a guy that would pick up anything and everything? Or does he turn his nose up at anything not his kibble…and sometimes even that? Second thing, call a friend. If your worried…call your vet and let their staff triage the situation. They are medical professionals and they deal with this all the time. They also have access to your dog’s doctor. Third thing is blood. Any blood in vomit or diarrhea is serious. The more blood, the more serious. Be ready to describe the amount of blood, and what it looked like. Better yet, snap a picture before you clean it up. Your veterinarian will want to know. And not all blood is red. Digested blood is black, or appears like coffee grounds in the vomit. Vomiting is a nondescript clinical sign that can sometimes be treated at home, or it can be a life-threatening emergency. If you are unsure where your dog is on that scale, call a veterinarian to get help. Be ready to answer with as much detail as possible, and be ready to act if it is deemed an emergency.

KOOL TOYS fOr “KIDS” frOm 1 TO 92 There are many great games on the market today. However, finding one that will hold the interest of a wide age range of players can be a challenge. The following are some of our favourite games that appeal to players of all ages. Qwirkle is game that is quickly becoming a classic. For young players, it can be played as a simple game matching colours and shapes. For more experienced players, there is an easy to learn points system. It is like playing Scrabble, except with colours and shapes. We have found that children as young as five can quickly learn this game, and often outsmart the older players!

If you like word games, Bananagrams is a crossword building game that works well for those with a wide range of vocabularies. The beauty of this word game is that you are as likely to win with a simple three-letter word as a more complicated one. Whether it’s a group of siblings or grandparents with the grandchildren, at Kool and Child we are happy to find you a game that works for you.

Family Time

A fun way to discover new and exciting facts is playing Top Trump. In this simple and portable card game, each deck has a theme – Dogs, Dinosaurs, Star Wars and Harry Potter are just a few of the editions to choose from . Each card has a list of categories and values attached to them. Players take turns comparing the values on these cards. The player holding the highest value card ‘trumps’ the others and wins the cards for that round. The winner is the one who collects all the cards. For a twist, Suspend is a logic and balance game. Each player takes turns placing their wiggly wire pieces on to a growing sculpture. The challenge is to keep it growing and not be the one to knock it down. Imagine pick-up sticks in reverse! This game comes in a junior and original version, so you can decide how much of a challenge you desire.

Still Rockin’ it Coast to Coast

CHILLIWACK Vancouver perennial CHILLIWACK is the quintessential Canadian rock band, standing comfortably astride both the vinyl age and the digital. With roots as the house band of the Torch Cabaret back in ’66, shifts in style and personnel have resulted in the emergence of the band we know and love. Through it all, the driving force remains Bill Henderson.

From the release of their first single “Looking at a Baby” which quickly rose to number three in Canada to the twenty minute major opus “What Love: Suite” - a huge cult classic - to the timeless hits “My Girl (Gone Gone Gone)”, and “Whatcha Gonna Do”, this iconic Canadian label has produced 31 hit singles, 16 of them Top 40. Playing the airwaves now is Chilliwack’s newly recorded live CD, “There and Back” and stay tuned for the rocking commentary on life patenting issues “Patent On The Wind”. Rolling Stone Magazine wrote, “At their

best, Chilliwack was the finest Canadian rock band, out-rocking BTO and out-writing Burton Cummings.” CHILLIWACK continues to play concerts across Canada.

Joining CHILLIWACK is Special Guest JESSE ROPER, performing a solo acoustic set. Jesse approaches his music with barriers down and volume up, a philosophy apparent on his third full-length album “Access to Infinity” (2018) featuring “Cherry” and “Worship The Sun”. With the quality and charisma of his versatile blues-rooted soul, rock and country funk he delivers an explosive live show as approachable as his charm. With the critically acclaimed album Son of John, “Yukon Girl” and “Hail Mary”, under his belt, Roper released his highly anticipated sophomore Red Bird, “The Hurricane’s Eye” and “Fool in Love”, in 2015. His youthful energy captivates audiences while the organic rawness of his vocals and guitar shatter any stereotype of the blues musician.

MATTHEW GOOD

Canadian Solo Acoustic Tour February 7 PORT THEATRE NANAIMO

This is Good’s first solo run in Canada since his 2007 critically acclaimed acoustic tour. The 35-date tour will see the prolific songwriter bring his inimitable solo acoustic performance from Nanaimo, BC to Ottawa, ON and back with stops across the nation. In addition to this, Good will be continuing to sell his OK merchandise, from which all proceeds are being donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association. Good began the tour of Canada last year (2018) with Our Lady Peace, where of Good’s

co-headline performance Ottawa Life Magazine noted that he “he dowsed [the crowd] in kerosene and struck a match on a blazing set that included cuts from last year’s Something Like a Storm and choice cuts from the back catalogue.” This followed up on the release of SOMETHING LIKE A STORM, which debuted in the top 5. Matthew Good is one of Canada’s preeminent voices in music today. In the 20 years since the release of his debut album, he has been prolific in his output. Matthew’s studio albums have combined for nearly one million albums sold in Canada alone. He released his ninth solo album, Something Like A Storm in the fall of 2017, and has been nominated for over 20 Juno Awards. Matthew is also known for his support of various causes, most notably his dedication to raising awareness regarding mental health issues and human rights. www.matthewgood.org
