Christmas Craft Fair

at Providence Farm Saturday, December 7, 2019 9am to 3pm Providence Farm’s Annual Christmas Craft Fair is on. Once again, we'll be filling the Farm with vendors, food, activities and Santa photos. Over thirty new and returning vendors, on both floors of the main building offer unique gifts from wreaths to glass ornaments to teas, body care and candles. Enjoy live music playing in the dining hall while feasting on a home-cooked lunch and dessert. St. Ann’s Building will be filled with gifts made by Providence Farm’s talented participants, staff, and volunteers. The kids can enjoy the craft area and a photo with Santa while you peruse the hand-made gifts, including stunning wooden bowls, wool and quilted blankets, fresh wreaths and swags, preserves and delicious holiday baking. THE ROARING 20'S Exhibition. Step back in time to 1919-1929, The Roaring Decade and discover what life was like 100 years ago. This all new exhibit, which includes humorous figures from the Good Old Daze Festival, showcases the economic boom, flapper fashions, rum running and other fascinating events that occurred in this area during the ‘Roaring Twenties’. Bring the whole family, there are activities for all ages with prizes for the kids. OUR HISTORY The Mill Bay/Malahat area has a deep and fascinating history strongly tied to industry, with the Bamberton cement plant operating in the area from 1912-1980, and even a loose connection to infamous gangster Al Capone. We quickly forget how life once was as we carry on with our lives full of technology and modern convenience, and fortunately the dedicated volunteers of the Mill Bay/Malahat, Bamberton, and Cobble Hill Historical Societies have preserved artifacts and documents from the last century and worked together to create the New Heritage Museum located at 2851 Church Way in Mill Bay. The museum provides visitors with an in-depth look at the history of their community. The current exhibit focusses on the roaring 20. There is even a vault door that belonged to Mr. G.F. Scollard, who is believed to have ties to Al Capone’s rum running network. Take some time to look at the facts of this interesting piece of local history and decide for yourself if you believe the rumour to be true! You are truly able to step back in time and see what life was like for your grandparents and great grandparents when they were young. Knowledgable volunteers are always on hand to answer questions, and the museum often offers activities for the whole family, as well as special prizes for the kids. Make sure to stop in and take in the fun the next Sunday you are exploring the Valley! The Heritage Museum is open every Sunday 12-4pm, private tours available Mon-Sat by contacting dalexander2@shaw.ca Admission by donation and the museum is wheelchair accessible.

The Steadies Rock Cowichan in December

The Steadies are a high-energy power trio from Saskatoon SK Canada who mix pop, rock, funk and reggae creating a sound they’ve dubbed, “island-rock”. Frontman Earl Pereira is a 3-Time JUNO Award (Canadian Grammy) nominee, 9-Time WCMA winner, was the bassist and founding member of multi-platinum band Wide Mouth Mason, and has toured opening for music icons The Rolling Stones, ACDC and The Tragically Hip. The Steadies’ last album release Love Revolution has received national radio play on CBC, and previous releases have garnered a top 50 hit on pop radio and a WCMA nomination. In May 2017 The Steadies completed a successful 17-date tour of China & South Korea and shortly after lost their founding member and guitarist Justin “Juice” Lee to a tragic brain aneurysm. With help from their musician friends the band toured across Canada in honour of Lee calling it the For Juice With Love Tour. After the announcement of newest member guitarist Jesse James Clark in Sept. 2018, The “new” Steadies headed overseas for their first European tour and completed a highly successful 6 shows across Italy, Austria, and Germany. In December 2018, the band received a wave of international press including features on TMZ, Hollywood.com, Stuff New Zealand, CBC, Metro UK after a video of Riverdale star KJ Apa (Archie Andrews) jamming with the band went viral. With that momentum heading into 2019, The Steadies continued with a busy summer of touring and recording their new album Tiro De Leone, which is set for a Fall 2019 release. The Downtown Victoria Business Association and our 1500 members have created something special: an all-ages, all access, December holiday extravaganza: Lights of Wonder! From December 13 through 30, 2019, Centennial Square will offer a visual, playful lightscape. Lights of Wonder is a magical urban oasis where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together and celebrate the season. Residents and tourists alike will enjoy Lights of Wonder as many times as they like. Families can come and share the magic of the season with their children, sip hot chocolate, and then explore other downtown Victoria venues. Couples can start or end their date nights under the canopy of our brightly lit 40-foot tree. Lights of Wonder offers Greater Victoria a reason to bundle up, get outside, warm hearts, and explore all that downtown has to offer. Did we mention that there’s no admission fee to view Lights of Wonder? It’s Downtown Victoria’s BIG gift to the region. Donations will be gratefully accepted by Lights of Wonder Ambassadors with goods and proceeds benefiting local charities.
