The URBANARY Maureen grew up in Campbell River and didn’t expect to return after a life time of being away. Opportunity presented itself in an unpredictable way that led her back to Campbell River after 40 years. Maureen wanted a business where she could be creative and helpful at the same time. As a project leader in the nonprofit sector, she served as an Executive Director for 11 years during which she championed several fundraising projects including creating a Thrift store. The experience revealed an abundance of “stuff” that people no longer wanted. Changing circumstances and modernisms have created piles of beautifully crafted decor that has lost its purpose. To facilitate the coming and going and back and forth of all those lovely decor pieces that have fallen to the way side after children head to college and families downsize, Maureen opened the perfect store in the perfect location that reflected the era of treasures and her creativity. Recovery, reclaiming, restoring and up-cycling furniture is what Maureen loves to do. Saving things from the land-fill and placing refurbished decor in a home where it can be re-used is her ultimate goal. Maureen says, “people by new things, when there are so many beautiful things that are available at a fraction of the price untouched by anything except time”. Many people come into the store and tell me they had one of these, or their grandparents did and they are delighted to find it again. These sort of gifts and purchases come with reflections and memories that create a much more memorable gift. The consignment store is ever changing, new things arrive weekly and new stories come with every item. Maureen would like everyone to start 2020 by purchasing more intentionally, considering by buying something treasured before buying something new. Every home should have stories with their decor. 550 11th Avenue | 250-914-5577 Open 5 days: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm

The
Crow’s Nest An Artist Collective Featured on our cover this month are the women behind the very modern collective of female entrepreneurs. Under the roof of Crow’s Nest Gallery, busy women with young families and dreams have pooled their resources to make a welcoming and fun environment that immediately draws you in to participate. The collection of talent that is coming from the gallery is fantastic, everything that is made and more is for sale making a huge Gift warehouse of unique goods. Nadia Rieger spoke to me about the changes since her move and how important it was to create a space that was supportive to family demands. Nadia Rieger owner of the gallery says, "We’ve recently evolved from a small studio and gallery space to a creative and colourful warehouse that can now facilitate new and larger classes, art supplies, a paint your own pottery studio, customization bar and artisan gallery"

Woman's I N T E R N AT I O N A L

To celebrate International Women’s Day we asked four questions to some of todays modern business women in Campbell River. We ask them to take an inward look from where they have come to the lighter side of who they are. Overwhelmingly, women of today are claiming ownership of who they are today and loving it. Their determination and tenacity has given them the freedom of choice and independence that 50 years ago was un-imagined. More and more woman are improvising, enterprising and relishing in the opportunity to be expressive, creative and making their own money.
4 QUESTIONS FOR MODERN WOMEN QUESTIONS PLAY 1. If you could stand in front of a woman in 1950 what would you say to her. 2. In one word describe a woman of 2020. 3. What do you wish you would of done in your 20’s. 4. What part of being a woman in 2020 makes you laugh out loud. Bev Herperger GM from the Anchor Inn 1. Bev gave us a long answer with brilliant encouragement in short, “Chin up… the 60’s and 70’s will put a whole new spin on your life.” 2. Multitasker. 3. Taken the inevitability of retirement a lot more seriously. 4. The sexual harassment in the workplace is a term still used. Leah Jesse owner of Willow Pt Books 1. Go to post-secondary school and get a degree or apprenticeship. 2. Independent. 3. Earn my PhD, but there’s still time for that. 4. Watching American politics makes me laugh and cry Noella from Bella Noella Designs 1. Thank you, you have made me strong and given me inner power to accomplish. 2. Diverse 3. Made more time for art Lisa Joan - Art teacher at Crows Nest Gallery 1. Don’t listen to the naysayers. 2. Determined. 3. Worried less about what other people thought. 4. The price of birth control. Nadia Rieger - owner Crows Nest Gallery 2. Resilient 3. I decided young never to regret anything, including what I didn’t do. Stephanie Johnston owner Coastal Wave Design 1. Relish change, and keep those bomb dresses. 2. Unstoppable 3. Nothing, each adventure lead me to where I am. 4. Working mom versus stay at home mom, Why? Mary-Ruth Snyder - Chamber of Commerce Executive 1. Your patience and committment are an inspiration. 2. Enlightened 3. Read the classics. 4. A human’s ability to turn simple into complicated. Tegan Gardener - owner of Ankor Salon 1. Thank you for working so hard and paving the way. 2. Aware 3. Taken more classes. 4. That people think that women speaking out is a “phase”

CHRISTINE Stonehouse Teas… paving the way for
entrepreneurial
women
Many women have struggled with “what I do” vs “what skills and character do I have that allows me to do what I do”. Once we look at this deeper, there can be many opportunities that present themselves. For me, for many years I was a Cook, Chef and Chef Instructor. This is “what I did”. Once I was able to put aside what I did and look at the skills and character I have, this allowed me to become an entrepreneur.
I am hard working, creative, strong and independent. I have the ability to share knowledge, think on my feet and a desire to put everything I have into everything I do. I have the ability to see challenges, obstacles and hurdles as opportunities and possibilities to be creative and take chances. All of these attributes have set me up to be a successful, passionate business owner in Campbell River.

Seeing a homeless guy begging on the street, a woman took pity on him and gave him a handful of change. "Thank you" said the homeless man. "Your generosity is much appreciated. You know my life used to be great, but just look at the state of me now."
10:00 am to 2:30 pm
"How do you mean?" asked the woman. "Well" he explained. "I was a multimillionaire. I had bank accounts all over the world with hundreds of thousands of dollars deposited in each. "So where did it all go wrong?" she asked. The homeless man sighed "I forgot my mother's maiden name."
