Local mother Chantal always wanted to shop in a children’s store where every piece was special. Her two boys are precious to her, so she was looking for unique and high quality clothing for them to rough and tumble in. After 3 years of hard work and determination, Chantal’s vision was born when she opened the Valley’s best kept secret. Baby Barn stocks items that parents and their children need for day-today life; practical, robust, quality goods. 98% of our stock is high end fashion quality or brand names on consignment, as well as locally made – Chantal thrives on helping her clients find unique treasures for little loved ones. Baby Barn carries clothing for children ages 0-5 years; toys; shoes; cloth diapers; diaper bags; baby carriers; locally made gifts and stylish maternity wear. If you’ve never consigned anything, let The Baby Barn Boutique teach you! Chantal says “consignment is a great way of ‘recycling’ or passing on items that you no longer need or use, and grabbing something new at the same time.” Baby Barn has an excellent consignment program ensuring clients leave happy and smiling with fun, colourful, quality items.
If you over-spend on kids clothes, get to The Baby Barn Boutique! Don’t forget to ‘Like’ The Baby Barn Boutique on Facebook, updated every single day with new and fun products!

Struggling to keep up with your personal income tax or your GST remittances? You’ll be relieved, and probably surprised, that there are options for dealing with debt to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). As creditors go, CRA is unique. In order to receive credit from most institutions you are required to fill out an application and are then approved. With CRA credit is not obtained through an application process, it is obtained merely through the default. CRA is known to be quite ruthless. They can collect the outstanding taxes by withholding your tax refunds and GST Credits, garnish your wages, take funds from your bank account and/or place a lien on any real property you own until your debt is paid in full. Unlike other creditors, they do not have to go through the Courts to do this and, therefore, can act very quickly. There are four options for dealing with CRA: • Pay your taxes in full, • Negotiate payment terms, • File a Consumer Proposal, or • File for bankruptcy. If you are unable to pay your outstanding taxes in full, often the best option is the Consumer Proposal. CRA will not negotiate a reduced settlement unless you file a Consumer Proposal. A Consumer Proposal is a legal process under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act that enables you to make an offer to all your creditors for a portion of what you owe. A proposal allows you to settle your debts without going bankrupt. It is important to seek professional help in preparing
a proposal to CRA as it is essential to meet all their requirements including convincing them that the proposal is the best deal possible and that it will result in a greater return to them than a Bankruptcy.

How and Where to Recycle Bianca King
Styrofoam
April 22nd to April 26th is Earth Week, and an easy way for you to contribute is to recycle! Recycling can be a confusing process, particularly with items that are more difficult to dispose of effectively.
Car Oil and Anti Freeze If you have car oil, anti freeze and oil containers to dispose of, take them to Jiffy Lube here in town and they will have it collected and recycled GREEN. Oil and anti freeze collected from Jiffy Lube is collected by another local Island company, who ship it to the lower mainland and Seattle, where it is then recycled back into reusable oil or #6 marine fuel, with very little wastage. For more information on recycling in BC, please visit www.rcbc.ca
Another common item that is difficult to dispose of correctly is styrofoam, or polystyrene. It is often used to make take out coffee cups, portable coolers and cushioning material for packaging – if you have purchased a new television, you have probably had large quantities of it to get rid of. If you have a stockpile of styrofoam sitting around your home or office, you can take it directly to London Drugs, where they will happily take it off your hands and Serving Vancouensure it is disposed of in All a green manner.

Nutritious & Delicious We’ve all heard that it’s healthier to steam your veggies instead of microwaving, frying or baking them. Now you can choose a Steam oven that steams your food instead of baking or broiling it. That’s right, you can cook pretty much everything by steam – even muffins! There are several options of steam ovens, some include other cooking methods like convection and microwave. Steaming your food not only gives it a nice, moist texture, steaming also retains more of the nutrition than boiling or baking. It’s ideal for cooking more than just vegetables. The benefit of steaming is the ability to gently cook food at a low heat thus retaining nutrients and palatability, whether cooking meats, poultry, fish or even desserts. It allows users to easily prepare an entire meal – from appetizers to desserts in one oven. Flavour transfer is eliminated as pressurized convection steam creates a protective layer around the food, ensuring your salmon tastes like salmon and desserts stay sweet and delicious, all while cooking simultaneously. For restricted diets, steam ovens are a must. Not only do foods retain nearly all of their nutrients, but steam cooking eliminates the need to use extra fats like butter or oil in preparation. How steam ovens work depend on the model, the new steam ovens can be either stovesized or the size of a microwave. The oven has a detachable water reservoir so it doesn’t need to be hooked to a water supply. According to manufacturers’ cooking a chicken in a steam oven at 100 Celsius would take about 20 minutes instead of a traditional oven. The steam can cook, bake, roast, grill, steam, warm, defrost and even refresh leftovers. Steaming food also means there’s no chance of burning!

Choosing Green Building Materials and Products. Building and living “Green” or in a sustainable way is a lot more that changing your light bulbs to the those horrible compact fluorescents that shift the environmental impact to china or putting a “not very efficient” solar panel on your garage roof. Decisions like selecting an appropriate location to build on, to seemingly small decisions, like making choices on paint and light bulbs. The products we use to clean, light, furnish, renovate, and build our homes must be a part of the greening process. Reducing our environmental impacts requires thinking and learning about not just how we use products, but where they came from and where they’re going. Consider factors like How much energy was used to make, ship, and use a product? If it came from 10,000 miles away and was shipped by air it may not be a good choice. Investigate the product’s contents and the sources of its raw materials, what’s in it and where did it come from. How about emissions produced during manufacturing the product and the level and type of toxins in the final product. That 10 year olds car has done all it’s polluting caused by fabrication and delivery, the only impact now is due to how much you drive it. The product’s durability (lifespan) and recyclability. Choose renovations like kitchens and bathrooms with a view to the long term, and with locally sourced materials. Environmentally Friendly Building Materials: Use Reclaimed Building Materials whenever you can. Salvaging building materials and reusing them saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing the need to
www.SustainableByDesign.ca
extract and process raw materials and ship new material long distances; it also reduces the economic and environmental impact from waste disposal (for example, greenhouse gases generated from waste decomposition, the need to build new landfills or the emission of air pollutants from waste incineration). Also, some salvaged building materials are rare and sought-after, such as marble mantles, antique fixtures, old growth hardwoods, wide-plank lumber and knot-free, fine-grain wood. You can reduce the environmental footprint of your home by incorporating salvaged materials like bathtubs, kitchen cabinets and framing lumber into the construction or renovation of your home. Re-use stores sell high-quality salvaged building materials for construction and renovation projects, including lumber, flooring, cabinetry, bricks, doors, windows, fixtures, and iron work. Materials are salvaged mostly from remodeling projects, predemolition salvage, and the growing practice of deconstruction as opposed to demolition. Building and renovating in a green and sustainable way is not difficult, but it does require some thinking and decision making. At Sustainable by Design we think outside of the box and work with you to arrive at the best environmental and cost efficient solution to your design and building project.

A lawyer defending a man accused of burglary tried this creative defense: “My client merely inserted his arm into the window and removed a few trifling articles. His arm is not himself, and I fail to see how you can punish the whole individual for an offense committed by his limb.” “Well put,” the judge replied. “Using your logic, I sentence the defendant’s arm to one year’s imprisonment. He can accompany it or not, as he chooses.” The defendant smiled. With his lawyer’s assistance he detached his artificial limb, laid it on the bench, and walked out.

Pet Tips Spring plants and flowers Watch out for poisonous plants. Species common at this time of year include lilies, daffodils, spring bulbs and azaleas. If you notice any signs of poisoning such as excessive salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, appearing ‘drunk’ or even collapsing – then contact your vet immediately.
The garden Dogs love spending time in the garden. Make sure that your garden is safe for your dog and be careful if you need to use any pellets, pesticides or other chemicals. Slug and snail pellets (Metaldehyde) is a common poison we see in dogs. The toxic compound is metaldehyde (not all slug pellets contain metaldehyde) and only small amounts of pellets can cause significant poisoning. Avoid using cocoa shell mulch, it is toxic to dogs (contains the same ingredient as chocolate). Read more about pet proofing your garden.
Wasp and bee stings Most cases of wasp or bee stings are not emergencies. With a bee sting, check and remove the sting if it is still in place, then bathe the area in bicarbonate of soda (one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to 300ml warm water). With wasp stings bathe the area with malt vinegar or lemon juice. If your dog is stung in or near the mouth or neck then you may need to seek veterinary help. Dogs, like humans, can be allergic or become allergic to stings. Signs include swellings, distress and breathing difficulties.
Bugs Make sure your dog is up to date with his vaccinations, flea and tick medications as this is the time of year fleas and ticks start to increase in number.
Allergies Just like people, dogs and cats can develop allergies to plants, pollens, grasses, and many other substances in springtime. Allergies in pets normally appear as itchy skin and ear problems, accompanied by hair loss or inflamed skin. Some pets will even change their behaviour due to irritation. Some will suffer respiratory symptoms or runny eyes.

Personalized Mortgage Solutions That Work
Home Advice From time to time, you are so close to qualifying for a mortgage to buy the house of your dreams. but you need a little more income to qualify. There are solutions. Please read on. Child Tax Credit - not all lenders allow this, the ones that do will allow as long as child is under 12 years of age. Disability - may be used for most lenders and some allow a 25% gross up. Interest or Dividend Income - Use a 2 year average. Maternity or Parental Leave - can use anywhere from 60% - 100%, depending on return date of work. A note from your employer is usually needed with date of return to work and whether you will be doing the same work at the same pay. Child or Spousal Support - Executed agreement or court order required along with 3 months of bank statements. Payments for Child or Spousal Support - enter as a liability. Any questions on whether you will qualify. Call or email for the answers. akroemer@mortgagegroup.com
