PET EXP K9 FEST O & IVAL
by Brenda Gough
O
n Saturday August 24, dog owners are invited to bring their best friends down to this canine festival and pet expo taking place between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presented by Nice Dog, Scarlett!, Bosley’s Pet Food Plus and Big Tent RV Park, the event is an outdoor festival for dogs and their companions. This will be the second dog expo that Certified Master Dog Trainer Scarlett Luke has organized in the Parksville-Qualicum Beach area. With the success of the Dog Dayz of Winter event, Scarlett Luke said she had a lot of people asking when the next one would be. Scarlett said the aim of the festival is to bring together a number of dog-related groups and businesses for a dog expo and fair. “The canine festival is a celebration of dogs and is all about giving your best friend a fun day out,” she explained. It is also a day to help raise awareness and money for local non-profit animal charities by participating in many activities and donating to their causes. Some of the activities include a Scavenger
Hunt, Splash Pool, Pup Bingo, Musical Mats, Art Paw Print Painting and Fishing for Sardines. Scarlett, who teaches Doga (yoga with your dog) will be doing demonstrations on the relaxing practice. Dogs can't really do yoga other than the downward and upward dog poses. But Doga is a great way to encourage interactions between busy pet owners and their dogs. Scarlett said it is surprisingly easy for any breed of dog to learn. "Dogs are natural yogis, living in the moment! It takes mere minutes to teach them that being calm on the mat gets them attention and cuddles. They love it." There will be contests for the Best-Dressed Dog, Pet Tricks and new this year will be a Weiner Dog Race Scarlett said that speedy greyhounds are welcome to watch but the race competition is just for short legged breeds, with a prize going to the winner who slinkys across the finish line first. Vendors offering offer a wide range of petfriendly services in Oceanside will also be

Admission is $2 per adult and kids under 12 are free, but must be accompanied by an adult. For safety reasons, there is only one dog per handler (who must be over 12). All breeds are welcome but if your dog does not do well in crowds, you’re advised to check it out while your pooch stays cool at home. The Big Tent RV Park is near the Orange Bridge at the south end of Parksville and is accessible from the Island Highway (heading north) or from Pioneer Crescent (heading south). t’s a big milestone for the Coombs Fair this year. The Fair is celebrating its 100 anniversary. Festivities will take place between August 10 and 11. Always lots of fun for the whole family, the fair is a celebration of agriculture in our community. This year’s theme for the fair is the goat. The Vancouver Island Goat Association (VIGA) is taking up a third of the gym with goat displays, cheese-making and interactive displays. Fairgoers will be able to walk through and take part in the exhibition. Fair Manager Janet Boley has been coordinating the event for 30 years and says ever since it started in 1913, it has been very popular for young and old alike. “It has a large 4-H component and we get a good showing of animals from 4-H kids from all over Vancouver Island,” she said.
Boley said it is also a great venue for the area’s long time residents to gather once a year and talk about the good old days. “The old timers get together for this at the pancake breakfast and they sit and enjoy home made pie and a bun-which in tea house.” Displays of interest include the Vancouver Island Blacksmiths and the Flying Dutchman’s live bee and honey exhibit. Local spinners, weavers and rug hookers always draw a good crowd and Boley said the Dunk Tank and Ladies Nail Driving are both good spectator sports. Chicken and duck races (always a crowd pleaser) will take place both days. Entertainers will also be performing both days, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. For the wee ones there is Doolittle Square,

a supervised children’s play area with always plenty of animals looking for a gentle pat. If you want to earn some bragging rights, you can enter the Gardening Hat contest. Entry forms and a $1 entry fee must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Monday before the fair. Boley said members of the public judge the hats which have been eccentric and hilarious in past events. If your hat is creative, you could win a coveted Coombs Fair Prize Rosette plus $10 cash. Make sure to walk through the barns, learn about the animals from young 4-H members and enjoy perusing the fruits and vegetables of the community’s labour. You’’ll also have a chance to feast your eyes on some of the area’s finest baking, including cakes, pies, jams and jellies. From needlepoint to quilts and woodworking to crafts, the entries into the fair are numerous and winners will take home a ribbon as well as a cash prize. Boley said the community exhibits really are the heart of the fair. “That is how the fair started out. It was from the tail gates of pick-up trucks where farmers showed off what they grew. It always showcased agriculture. It is for the person at home who sewed a dress for the winter or baked something they wanted to show off. What makes the fair is the people who create items and enter them.” The fair gates are open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. August 10 and August 11, with indoor exhibits opening at 9:30 a.m. For admission rates and more information, call 250-248-4478 or visit www.coombsfair.com

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his English class one day. “In English,” he said, “A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.” A voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”

WOODCARVING A by Brenda Gough
four day woodcarving event from August 8 to August 11 in the centre of Bowser promises to be a whole lot of fun and may even result in Lighthouse Country becoming a mecca of magnificent sculptures. Last year, over 11,000 people came out to watch as renowned sculptors came together at the Sandbar Café in Qualicum Bay to create a series of wooden masterpieces over a three day period.
The pieces were then purchased by local merchants for permanent display throughout the community. They can now be found at the Sandbar Café, Tomm’s Food Village, the Salish Sea Market and The Crown & Anchor Pub. This year, the sculptors are returning to with their chainsaws and other carving tools to continue carving out the story of Lighthouse Country. Ken Kirkby, who initiated the first event, said that all of the action will take place in the big field by Magnolia Court and that there will be even more artists participating this year. Kirkby is an accomplished painter living in Bowser. He said the goal of the event is to attract tourists and in time, make the area famous for having the most amount of sculptures per square feet than anywhere else in the world.
FEST
TIVAL
Four Day Carving Event in Bowser
“Last year was the trial event. The idea was that each merchant would buy a piece and put it in a public place for people to enjoy and over time fill the place with carvings to get people interested in the area,” he explained. Kirkby said it was a great success. Every sculpture was sold, so they are doing it again this year, only it will be bigger and better. “It was a celebration really. Everyone had a smile on their face. Once last year was over, word spread like wildfire. We started out with four but this year many more carvers are coming.” Last years’ artists included Howard Lobb, Dan Richey, Jerry Strelioff and Oscar Moria. The award-winning carvers wowed hundreds of spectators as they skillfully used their chainsaws, blow-torches and other tools of the trade to bring their pieces to life. Kirkby pointed out that Campbell River hosts a big woodcarving event but that it’s a serious competition. The woodcarving event taking place in Lighthouse Country is more laid back and fun. “Every carver that comes … they all get the same money and everyone is looked after like royalty. Last year, I saw artists working on each others carvings. There was 100 percent collaboration and smiles. I didn’t see a frown in the four days,” he recalled
It’s hoped that this event will give people another reason to visit Lighthouse Country, besides the area’s beauty and the fish. Kirkby said that the carving event started as a celebration of the successful restoration of Nile Creek.
Last year, over 11,000 people came out to watch as renowned sculptors came together at the Sandbar Café in Qualicum Bay to create a series of wooden masterpieces... The pink salmon have returned to Nile Creek thanks to the work of the Nile Creek Enhancement Society, which Kirkby spearheaded. He said everyone in the community should appreciate what they have. “Now that we have restored the river, we should say thank you for all of our good fortunes. We invite everyone to come and enjoy and get the fever.” For more information about the 2nd Annual Woodcarving event in Bowser, contact the folks at Salish Sea Market by phone at 778424-2012.
