Diving head first into one of Vancouver Island’s largest wineries, Brenda HetmanCraig and Layne Craig have embraced the culture of 40 Knots Winery and are taking it to a new level. Nestled in the tranquility and breathtaking Comox Valley, 40 Knots boasts 18 acres of vineyard and over 40,000 vines, making it the largest in Comox Valley and the second largest on the island.
14-9 SEPT 2014 WO CValley.indd 16
Layne Craig, a veteran to agriculture, and Brenda, a retired business manager, wasted no time in seeking some of Canada’s most advanced and skilled professionals in the wine business. With the help of Ch r istine Colleta from Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland, an extensive learning process started. Together with New Zealander wine maker Matt Dumayne, who has 24 years of wine making experience under his belt and specializes in Pinot Noirs, which New Zealand is world famous for, the intricate secrets
and chemistry of fine wine making is handed down. “It has been life changing and exhilarating at the same time. It is hard work but endlessly interesting, the element of owning such a rewarding industry that is truly in the hands of mother nature is nerve wracking but very exciting,” says Layne Craig. Local people have been hired to work in the vineyard and tasting room. Brenda says, “we are seeing the benefits through their work ethic and commitment to creating a local product they are proud of”. 40 Knots winery boasts 18 acres of vineyard and over 40,000 vines making it the largest in Comox Valley and the second largest on the island. The vineyard is situated in a position that creates unique temperate conditions, keeping the temperature higher than most other locations on the island.

To create the magnificent collection of sparkling, whites, reds, roses, fortified and ice wines the vineyard is a combination of vines coming from France and Vancouver Island. Spindrift Brut, Pinot Gris, Whitecaps, Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir and Safe Haven are all Vancouver Island grapes, and are all estate made wines. Grapes were bought in from the Okanagan to create the wonderful blend, Meritage and the unique Merlot Ice Wine as the grapes required in these wines can not be grown or frozen on Vancouver Island. As an agricult uralist Layne knows first hand the env i ron menta l responsibilities to growing grapes, and is choosing to exchange all herbicides and chemicals with natural earth friendly products. As well the plan to use farm animals to help maintain and fertilize the property grounds, rather than

machinery and fuels will be introduced over the next year.
Tasting Room and Wine Shop:- From Thursday to Sunday, 11.30am to 5.30pm you can visit the tasting room and wine shop. Enjoy an afternoon in a beautiful setting on the patio, sampling the wines amongst the vines. The Vineyard is the perfect destination for small or large groups, weddings or family outings. To buy, 40 Knots Wines can be found at selective private and specialty liquor stores or you can order direct from
the winery. You will also find it at the Comox Valley Farmer’s Market every Saturday. Just one more secret; Layne is working on a Pinot Noir that has undergone 2 years of barrel fermentation. As a rule I’m not a fan of Pinot Noir..but, after just a small sample, what I tasted bared no resemblance either in colour, smell or taste of what I remember from a Pinot Noir, this was AMAZING !! This will be a strong competitor in any Pinot Noir competition internationally.

A teenage boy and his grandfather go fishing one day. While fishing, the old man starts talking about how times have changed. The young man picks up on this and starts talking about the various problems and diseases going around. Teen says, “Grandpa, they didn’t have a whole lot of problems with all these diseases when you were young did they?” Grandpa replies, “Nope.” Teen says, “Well, what did you guys use for safe sex?” Grandpa replies, “A wedding ring.”

$$$$ $$ DOLLAR EN E $ $ FIVE REASONS BUDGETS FAIL
By Sue Grubac
Whoa! Last month I was telling everyone that budgets were the best thing since sliced bread, now I’m saying that they can fail….what’s up with that?!? So here’s the scoop! Budgets are a tool and, as with any tool, they are only as good as the operator. There are five errors people commonly make when preparing a budget that you need to be aware of so that your budget will be successful:
1. Using the wrong income. This is number one
when two people manage one account. One can be planning for a bill payment while the other makes a cash withdrawal.
5.
Not having a goal. For a budget to really work, you need to have a goal, something compelling enough to keep you on track: pay down debt, buy a home, put money away for education, save a trip.
for a good reason. I see many people who don’t know how much they make in a month; some think they make more than they actually do and others don’t realize they make as much as they do. Business owners can have income that varies month to month so they don’t know what to use for their income. People mistake gross income for take home income or don’t understand that bi-weekly and monthly pay are different. But it all comes down to the same thing: if you don’t know how much you make you can’t have an accurate budget.
2. Not enough detail. You need to have very detailed categories to understand where your money is going. The more detail you have, the better clarity you get.
3.
Missing items. It’s so easy to miss expenditures that you don’t pay on a regular basis and that can lead to serious shortfalls. Some good examples are water bills, kid activities, gifts, car maintenance, medical and dental costs.
4. Cash spending. For some reason when people
take cash from the bank they don’t record what they spend it on, the amount withdrawn is recorded but not the expenditure. This can be a problem
