The 2017 year saw new buildings changing the landscape of downtown, major property takeovers, renovations, old buildings being torn down or burnt down and new buildings going up within Campbell River
With the go ahead on down town residential there have been several applications for building permits and re-zoning on existing lots. The city has been tasked to move quickly on master plans that will bring the new downtown refresh into fruition over then next 12 month’s. A bold step was taken by the city after the closure of the Visitor centre December 2016. The decision to move forward and engage a tourism marketing company, “Destination Think” to hold the reigns on tourism commenced in May 2017. The objective is to give Campbell River stakeholders a focused global presence that would remain at arms length to city business. Destination Think have a world wide reputation of carving new pathways that position destinations such as Campbell River onto the itineraries of world wide visitors. Art and Culture have gathered new momentum, anticipation of new themed art pieces appearing between Campbellton and Pier Street are adding excitement to the reshaping of Campbell River. Many of the new business owners, have either come back to Campbell River or have chosen to invest business and life laying down roots for the first time here. These new residents are bringing energy with a strong vision to succeed, that is pushing the boundaries on old mentalities.

Tracy McGrath
owner of the new Raspberry Rascals is a Campbell Riverrite returned. Born and raised in Campbell River, Tracy and family had moved to Fort McMurray 15 years ago and returned in July 2017. Now with two grandchildren and after working ten years as a hotel manager Tracy, really wanted to do something for herself and other families with growing children. Once settling into Campbell River again she noticed that there really wasn’t anywhere to buy quality children’s clothing without travelling out of town. In two short months Raspberry Rascals opened its doors on September 1st 2017. Both Tracy and daughter sourced out some of the popular brands as well as functional children’s clothing suitable for west coast living. One piece suits and jackets were in high demand as well as hi-vis safety clothing, sizes Preemie to 14. Tracy says, there was nothing for mom’s with premi babies to wear in Campbell River, mom’s were travelling down island just to get basic clothing. Some of the brands you will expect to find are DEX, Little Me, MID, Silkberry, Jack & Lilly shoes, Decibel rubber boots, Calikids, and Petitlem.

Royal Zayka Raj & Arti took possession of the old Misty Fins establishment in February 2017 to turn it into a traditional Indian Restaurant named Royal Zayka. After immigrating from Shimla, North India, to Alberta Edmonton in 2008, it wasn’t long before the search for a smaller community in British Columbia began. Fortunately for us Campbell River met the calling. Raj is a qualified Red Seal chef with 18 years experience, and a 3-year Hotel Management Diploma from IHM INDIA. He spent the first part of his Canadian career at the Hotel Mariott in Edmonton where he was executive chef to a large team of cooks and kitchen staff. Raj says for the Mariott you have to be ready to cook anything, and having multicultural experience for all types of foods, “I was often asked to prepare, Greek, Chinese and Arabic - not just Indian”. “Cooking with multiple types of spices and understanding so many cultures is an amazing eye opener, it shows how varied foods can be, and how many flavours are still unexplored”. Raj says the world is changing, and now more people are looking for alternative dining. They are more aware of the health benefits that come with spices and herbs that make up the traditional flavours and aromas of Indian cooking. Arti and Raj want to bring traditional, fresh, healthy Indian dining to Canadians, to introduce them to new flavours and the true taste of India. There are no frozen meats or pre-processed foods, everything is made from scratch. Arti has spent 15 years in the hospitality industry as restaurant manager and Indian cultural event co-ordinator. and Arti will kick up the dance floor with some traditional Bharata and Kathak dance moves. Raj and Arti offer more than just food they are planning some very interesting events that will introduce us to a full Indian experience. The restaurant is currently open 7 days a week, with an 16 dish Buffet for lunch 11am2:30pm, eat in or take out. Dinner is from 4-10pm. The best way to start your Indian dining experience is to let Raj and Arti introduce you to flavours at a spice level that suits you, and to have them recommend the best way to enjoy the food. written by Cathy Kaardal 968 Alder St. 250-850-0785 www.royalzayka.com

European Autos Brand new shop • A decade of experience
Honest reliable service is what goes before Bill Sharpe the owner of the new Willows street Auto Service. Bill is well known in Campbell River and is almost an accessory to the local motor industry. Having started his auto career as a young man in detailing, he then completed an electronics trade working in marine electronics and then progressing through the auto industry with Barry Brown and Tyee Chev.
difficult to find a service mechanic in Campbell River that could work on them. At times auto service repair carried a stigma questioning honesty and reliable service, before I retired I wanted the chance to show that honest service at reasonable price is available. Bill says, “I have seen a lot of cars and customers come and go, and the one thing that customers always want is to TRUST their mechanic.” When he met up with Hugh Cupples an experienced mechanic on european cars it was a natural fit.
“Honest reliable service”
Bill did opt out of Auto for about 7 years and re-trained in aircraft structures working for Sealand before he took the big leap and opened his own Auto repair business in October 2017. When I asked Bill why he chose to go back to cars, he told me about his love for European cars and that it was still very
Bill says there is sometimes a 2 week waiting list for car repair in Campbell River and very few can work on European cars, the opportunity to fill the gap and create a reliable service is my main focus.
You can stop by and meet Bill at Willow St Auto Service on Willows Street at the base of the Inland Hwy in Campbellton.

Come Brighten Your Day at the Sunny Day Café Meet the proud new owners Annette & Jonalyn Fischer of the new Sunny Day Café. Opened December 5th, the new bright and cheerful Sunny Day Café was named by Jona and Mike’s four year old daughter Jasmine. The café has been a dream of Annette’s since she worked in a bakery at 11 years of age and just loved it, always with the thought in mind that one day she would have her own café. Annette followed her husband to Canada from Germany in 1977, after spending time in the hospitality industry in the German Alps. Annette settled into Campbell River quickly, led by her entrepreneurial spirit she didn’t waste any time getting involved in business.
Jona and Annette with the help of Jona’s husband Mike make a great team when hours can be long. When you walk into Sunny Café you are greeted with a beam of sunshine from a spectacular mural. The café has a relaxing and cozy atmosphere with the aroma of European baking coming from the kitchen. You can expect to find giant Cinnamon Buns laced with apple, Pretzels, European Pastries, freshly prepared soups, sandwiches and salads with a twist. Open from 7am for breakfast and espresso coffees, Lunch till 6pm, 6 days a week. Closed Saturdays.
Annette has owned and operated many businesses, from pet stores to flower shops, bed and breakfast and home-sharing for assisted living. Jona also has a love for cooking and hospitality and has spent many years in Campbell River and abroad working in kitchens and management.

Classy Katz Consignment
Vintage Success
Meet Norma Jean - gem of the consignment world who came out of retirement to rescue what she calls “a fantastic business that just needed me”. You can’t help but love Norma Jean from the minute you walk into her store. Her love for fashion in every era shows throughout the store. When I asked Norma Jean to tell me a little about her past, she said…. “I love buttons.. beautiful gold and hand-crafted buttons, especially those from the early 1900’s”. Norma Jean is a collector of fashion styles from the last 100 years. Ironically she also loves cats. She has an amazing collection of ceramic cats, stuffed cats, and paintings of cats. No wonder “Classy Katz“ was the perfect fit for Norma Jean. After taking over the original Classy Katz on April 1, 2017, it was only a few short months before the inventory started to swell. Norma Jean’s contagious smile and genuine love of people attracted what is now over 400 consignees. With the amount of items brought in by consignees, expansion was needed so Classy Katz became 2 stores as Classy Katz Consignment and Classy Katz Continued. The new store is only five hundred yards from the first store. It hosts a vast array of vintage clothing especially from the roaring twenties, ladies modern career wear, as well as some popular brands for Curvy Girls. You can also find a huge range of shoes, many unworn, as well as new and used hats, jewellery and handbags. It’s a very fun place to be.
Since the expansion Norma Jean employs four staff to operate both stores. All items are inspected for damage and quality before making it on to the rack. Norma says designer clothing finds its way to her store from Italy, France, and all around the world. Norma and her staff research clothing by brand and designer to determine its value. Beautiful silks and wools that would be thousands of dollars brand new, are available for affordable prices. Norma Jean regularly chooses a charity to donate funds to from her $2 rack. Proceeds go directly to groups such as the food bank, the Aboriginal Centre, John Howard Society and Rose Harbour. Thanks Norma Jean, for loving everything that you do, from the buttons up! written by Cathy Kaardal

Teena Sieben is a certified water treatment plant operator who moved to Campbell River from Jasper Alberta in 2015. After 3 years as the technician for the water plant in Jasper at the Fairmont Hotel, Teena had no plans to move. However, when she came to visit her parents for Christmas her health improved dramatically in one week, and a chronic cough had disappeared completely. Teena didn’t waste any time making the decision to make Campbell River home. Teena spent a year looking for work while living with her parents, helping her diabetic father. Teena had tuned into the life of a type 2 diabetic, and she knew she could do something about re-creating desserts and foods without sugar or carbs that drastically affect diabetic people. Up until this time, Teena’s dad was missing sweet treats, and he wished there were more choices for diabetics. Teena wanted to make safe goodies for him. Teena put her chemical knowledge to work and started developing chocolates, truffles and cakes that could be eaten by diabetics. Her products also addressed other health related issues caused from sugars, glutens, yeast, corn resins and dairy.
18-01 JAN 2018 CRiver WO.indd 21
As the inventory of products grew and the need to provide alternative unsugared foods became more and more demanding, Teena decided to set up shop in Campbellton in September 2017. With more experimenting and searching for products, Teena also produced her own gluten and yeast free bread, seeded bread for celiacs, plus other savoury items. “New products are always evolving, - I just developed a sugarless Halva that is very good for you and it tastes amazing”. Now when you visit Un-sugared you will find a wide range of sugar-free, calorie-free, dairy-free, flour-free and carb-free products that are sweet or savoury. You can also ask for custom orders to suit your diet. Teena says she loves to help teach people alternatives to processed foods and she wants to be able to help people get back to the food they love while staying healthy. You can follow Teena’s new products on her facebook page.
