Mozart and a DrumAt theRoll Sid
The Vancouver Island Symphony performs Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 nicknamed The Drumroll - after the long roll on the timpani with which it begins. We will also hear Symphony no. 37, written by Joseph’s younger brother, Michael Haydn with an intro by the one and only Mozart. The concert begins with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides – experience the sounds and sights of Scotland in a single piece of music. This is an evening of classical masterpieces, penned by creative geniuses – a picturesque overture, a Mozart rarity and one of the bestcrafted symphonies ever written. Music Moves this season with the Vancouver Island Symphony. For tickets and more information, visit www. vancouverislandsymphony.com. Keeping Music Live! Symphony at the Sid is Sunday, January 21st, 2018 at 2 pm. NEW THIS YEAR!

Ginger Goodwin 100 YEARS On July 27, 1918, in the mountains near Cumberland, war resister and union organizer, Albert “Ginger” Goodwin was shot by Special Constable Dan Campbell. 100 years later, his death still stirs up debate. Join us in Cumberland this year for a special Miners’ Memorial celebration and commemoration to keep his memory alive. HIGHLIGHTS for FRIDAY June, 22 Workshops, presentations, walking tours, and hands-on art activities plus SONGS OF THE WORKERS: This Friday Night tradition welcomes musicians to share songs and poems in the working class tradition. This event serves up locally brewed beer, Riders Pizza, and fantastic company! HIGHLIGHTS for SATURDAY, June 23 Pancake breakfast, graveside vigil, the recreation of the funeral procession and BBQ at Cumberland Village Park, & evening entertainment with musician and story-teller, Geoff Berner. GRAVESIDE VIGIL: at the Cumberland Cemetery featuring speakers, music, the laying of fair trade flowers on Ginger Goodwin’s grave, and a rose ceremony on the graves of all the fallen miners. The afternoon continues with visits to the Japanese and Chinese cemeteries to pay respects to fallen miners and their families. GINGER GOODWIN’S FUNERAL PROCESSION: the reenactment is the pivotal event of the weekend. With a brass band in period costume, we’ll march down Dunsmuir Ave to the Village Park where historical quotes, newspaper articles, poetry and song will be shared from the stage. Live music and a BBQ will follow. All welcome! HIGHLIGHTS for SUNDAY, June 24: ‘Goodwin’s Reach’ Art exhibit at the Cumberland Museum and Archives. THEATREWORKS: Original theatre by Kymme Patrick that weaves together local history, including Joe Naylor, Ginger Goodwin and a visit from Mother Jones. Most events are free, or by donation, with proceeds supporting exhibits and programs at the Cumberland Museum and Archives. Mark your calendar to save the dates, and check back for the full schedule in the coming months! www.cumberlandmuseum.ca or @MinersMemorialCumberland

TH E PACK A AT THE
Destruction and melody, acid wit and bruising vocals-this is the Pack A.D. Singer/ guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller have made a sound so gigantic, so fierce and raw and empowering, that it’s easy to forget there are just two people behind this brilliant, carefully constructed havoc.
WAVERLEY HOTE
Shredding and pounding their way through every song, the Pack A.D. swallows you whole inside their fearless Franken-blend of heavy psychpop/garage-rock. Their lyrics are wild nests, human and complex: darkly funny disclosures about depression; indictments of digital excess; grief-stricken fire bombs;

umberland Hotel
Sundays @ 5pm
If you are new to playing music with others, come at 5pm for an hour of “slow jam” led by Josh Lichti or Britt Hibbert. We pick easy bluegrass classics like “Will The Circle Be Unbroken”, “Nine Pound Hammer” or “Angeline The Baker” and play them slow. Slow jam also discusses jam structure, etiquette and some fundamental music theory. Here you’ll learn what chords to play and why, when to play loud, when to play quiet, when to take a solo, and how to lead a song!
After the Slow Jam,we continues as songs are passed around the circle ensuring everyone gets a chance to shine. All genres are welcome from folk, old time, blues, country, and jazz. Guitars, banjos, fiddles, mandolins, ukeleles, bass’ (even washtubs!) and harmonicas have all made appearances. Everyone is welcome so dust off those strings, come on out to the Cumberland Hotel and get to pickin’!

What’s In Your Food?

By Arzeena Hamir
Ah January, the month of new beginnings and new resolutions. If a cleaner diet is high up on your list of to-dos, here’s a quick tip to help cut through the plethora of diet advice. Cook from scratch for yourself and your family. The more your take back control of what goes into your body, the fewer “nasties” that will enter it.
foods laced with antibiotics, all kinds of reactions can happen from irritable bowel syndrome to eczema to even depression. Probably the biggest culprit is the prevalence of glyphosate, also known as Roundup. This herbicide is in large-scale wheat, barley & oat farms as well as in GMO crops like canola, feed corn, and soybeans.
But doesn’t our government protect our food system? In a short, no they do not. Basically, Health Canada approves whatever the USDA does and the USDA has a revolving door between itself and companies like Monsanto and Bayer. So, it’s really up to you to make informed choices.
So how do you eat cleaner? Choose whole fruits and vegetables and wherever possible, purchase organic. In Canada, there is no other labeling system other than certified organic that can ensure food isn’t grown without pesticides or antibiotics. Luckily, in the Comox Valley, there a number of certified organic vegetable, chicken and beef farmers. Check them out at the Farmer’s Market. Get to know your grower. They’re your first line of defense for a healthier you.Canada, there is no other labeling system other than certified organic that can ensure food isn’t grown without pesticides or antibiotics. And it certainly is possible. Eliminating herbicides, insecticides, genetically engineered (GE) organisms and antibiotics from your food supply can make a huge difference in how you and your family feel after a meal. More and more, we are finding that the gut microbiome is critical for helping to not only your digest food, but also for general health including producing important brain hormones. When this internal ecosystem is out of balance because of poor diet or eating
