A friend hosted a dinner party for people from work and everyone was encouraged to bring their children. All during the sit-down dinner one co-worker’s three-year-old girl stared at the man sitting across from her. The girl could hardly eat her food from staring. The man checked his tie, felt his face for food, patted his hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at him. He tried his best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for him. He asked her, “Excuse me little girl, but why do you keep staring at me?” Everyone at the table had noticed her behaviour, and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said, “I just want to see how you drink like a fish.”

DRIVING TIPS

© Rideout Communtications.

The statistics are alarming. Distracted driving continues to claim more lives on BC roads than impaired driving. Every year, on average, 8 people are killed in distracted driving-related crashes on Vancouver Island. In fact, distraction and driver inattention is one of the top contributing factors in motor vehicle fatalities in BC and, according to police data from 2011 - 2015, contributes to more than one quarter of all car crash deaths. But just what qualifies as ‘distracted driving’? We are all aware of the dangers of using our cellphones while behind the wheel. But it is much more than that. Driver inattention, and driver distraction from internal/external sources is also dangerous. Opening a food wrapper, turning around to check on your kids in the backseat, gawking at the scenery: it is all dangerous while operating a moving vehicle. And who hasn’t been guilty of at least one of those? Self-examination, not recrimination, is the best way to move forward and make positive change. Indeed, with all the distractions that exist both inside and out of our vehicles, always remaining focused on the road is not easy and requires a very conscious decision to do so. Many drivers might be surprised to learn that it is against the law to use your cellphone at a red light, or when stuck in gridlock.

So what can you do besides practice attentive, safe driving? Consider getting involved in a pilot project from ICBC that, with the help of an app installed on your phone, disables your phone when your car is being driven. Or pick up a distracted driving sticker at participating ICBC Driver Licensing and Autoplan broker offices. Show your support and help make your community a safer place to be! Here are a few tips to help you, your car passengers and those around you remain safe. • No call, text or email is worth risking your life for. Let calls go to voicemail and ignore text messages while driving

• Turn off your device and put it out of reach to avoid the temptation to check • Assign a designated texter. Ask your passenger to make or receive calls and texts on your behalf

It is legal to use a ‘hands-free’ device while driving, which means a Bluetooth, wired headset or speakerphone that can be operated with one touch or voice commands. It is important to note however that if you have a Learner’s (L) or Novice (N) license, using any electronic device while driving, even a hands-free one, is against the law.

• Pull over to make or receive a call when it’s safe to do so. For longer journeys, look for signs at highway rest areas, some of which now provide free Wi-Fi • Choose to activate the ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ feature, coming soon for iPhone users
