HOME&LIFE Your Home, Your Way

Interior decorating trends, like other forms of fashion, are famous for changing as often as the seasons. There are, however, some decorating and design ideas with lasting appeal that can be as personal as you chose to make them. Here are a few to get you started....

• bring outdoor fabrics in! Pillows, couches and chairs covered with more durable fabrics not only stand the test of time, they come in a range of unique, eyecatching colours. Perfect for the home with a dog or a snackloving teen....

• as

technology increasingly fills our daily lives, many families are opting for a ‘techfree’ living room. A pretty bookstand, some cosy throws and a tray for tea can make this space welcoming

• if

a silent sanctuary is your goal but new insulation isn’t in the budget, try some rugs or strategically placed carpets to absorb footstep noise. If unwanted noise is seeping through

Organize Your Closet... Ready, Set, Toss!

First remove anything from your closet that you can’t wear... pictures, a vacuum, yarn, etc. and find them new homes. Pull out all clothes that don’t work for the season... it will be overwhelming to deal with all your clothes at once but just get it done. Now group your clothes in “like” items. It will be easy to decide how many of your five black pants you need or which pair look tired. How many keepsake t-shirts do you really need to hold onto?

Enjoy a perfectly flat fit under tees!

Metal buckles and super-strong velvety elastic waist band No more gape-out around the waist or undie peekaboos Now come buy one at KC’s Boutique!

Try on remaining items. You can’t know how they fit when they’re on the hanger. Ask the following questions... • Is it a good fit? • Is it a good colour for me? • Can it be altered? • Is it a current style? • Is the item in good shape or showing its wear? • Can it be easily updated? • Get rid of negative energy from clothes you don’t love anymore

Spring is here and once again the Cowichan Valley Arts Council (CVAC) is gearing up for the annual Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show. This year’s event takes place April 27th to May 1st, 2016 in PORTALS and the Cowichan Suite, inside the Island Savings Recreation Centre. Celebrating its 46th year, the Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show is one of Vancouver Island’s largest open art exhibition and sale. All working in a range of mediums, including painting, photography, woodwork, pottery, textiles, jewellery, mixed media, sculptures and glass. Artwork submitted to the show will be juried by three professional jurors. One ‘Best In Show’, five ‘Awards of Excellence’ and ten ‘Awards of Honour’ will then be selected. And of course the popular Peoples’ Choice Award will be voted on during the run of the show. General admission is $5.00. Free to children 12 years and under. Beloved Egyptian-born Canadian singer-songwriter Raffi is holding a benefit concert at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre Apr 24 at 1 pm to ‘Save Shawnigan Water’. Best known for his children’s music, Raffi’s albums include small, simple, folk instrumentations, prominently featuring Raffi’s vocal and guitar work. His recent musical work has focused on social and environmental causes and appeals to the generation who grew up with his children’s music (“Beluga Grads”) to affect change in the world. Towards that end, proceeds from the ‘Raffi #Belugagrads’ Concert are going to the Shawnigan Lake Residents Association. FMI cowichanpac.ca or 250.748.7529

Thank you to Raffi for your tireless efforts in supporting this cause and to all the people who rallied together and stood shoulder to shoulder for change. Shawnigan Lake contaminated soil dump not allowed, rules B.C. Supreme Court Like ‘waking up from a nightmare’ says Cowichan Valley Regional District after court ruling By Megan Thomas and Lisa Johnson, CBC News

The B.C. Supreme Court has ruled against a controversial soil dump above Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island, saying the contaminated soil treatment facility is not a permitted use for the property. In a 38-page decision, Judge Brian MacKenzie ruled the operators, South Island Resource Management, Ltd., were using the property as a landfill — something they contested — and which is not allowed under the regional district’s zoning bylaws. That means no more contaminated soil can be dumped there, though the judge did not require the owner or operator to remove what’s already there. • Hundreds protest soil dumping near Vancouver Island watershed • Fears over Shawnigan Lake contaminated soil dump unfounded, company says

The decision comes after years of dispute, and a protest in January that drew more than 500 people, with residents concerned the contaminated dirt could taint the water of Shawnigan Lake, which thousands of people in the area north of Victoria rely on for drinking water.

Children’s singer Raffi even penned a song called “Beautiful Shawnigan Lake,” singing, “won’t let anyone poison her,

we’re gonna let her shine” to the tune of This Little Light of Mine. ‘Waking up from a nightmare’

The Cowichan Valley Regional District, which brought the court case forward to enforce its own bylaws, is calling the decision a major victory.

“We went from a community that was dreaming about its future to a community that was suddenly in a nightmare. And today it’s like waking up from that nightmare,” Sonia Furstenau, a director with the CVRD, told All Points West host Robyn Burns. “What we’ve learned in Shawnigan is that water is the heart and lifeblood of a community and without fresh, clean drinking water, communities cannot thrive.”

In a statement, South Island Resource Management, which operates the facility, said it is complying with the court decision, but will continue its other operations on the site. “We continue to operate the mine and manage the material already on site,” the statement reads.

Cobble Hill Holdings, which owns the property, is considering an appeal of the decision, according to the operator.

The B.C. Ministry of Environment, which in 2013 issued a permit to allow the contaminated soil treatment facility, said in a statement ministry staff needed time to review the court decision before commenting.

Seize the Day! WITH such an incredible array of things to do and see on Vancouver Island there truly is no excuse for sitting on the couch. We lucky few, who have chosen to make our homes in this most amazing and geographically and (increasingly) culturally diverse part of the world, sometimes forget how blessed we truly are. Why, for example, on long weekends are there such long line-ups to catch a ferry here? Why, do tourists come from all over the world to visit? Why indeed? Well it’s obvious to me: this place is special. From the history and architecture of towns large and small, to the sweeping natural vistas of mountain and ocean there is something to suit every taste. Some people enjoy the simple pleasures of shopping and dining in an urban environment. If that suits your fancy you can find it. Whether it’s Nanaimo to Chemainus or Duncan to Shawnigan Lake or any one of the many points between you will discover local shopping and cafes that are truly world class. If the outdoors are more your game Vancouver Island is a paradise. From rock climbing to skiing, golfing, fishing or boating it’s all right here! For the truly active person you could, in theory, do 18 holes of golf in the morning and head up for some afternoon or night skiing at Mt Washington (when the snow gods cooperate of course).

Article by Simon Rideout

How fun is that? When my wife and I moved to the Island in 2002 I was earning a business degree and thought this was a temporary stop along the way. We had even discussed the idea of moving back to Vancouver after graduation. That was 13 years ago. Since that time we have raised 2 boys (work in progress) camped on the beaches of the Island, taken whale watching cruises, visited the old-growth rain forests, enjoyed city nightlife, and taken in the great outdoors. I cannot see ever leaving the Island. There is just too much to love..and I havn’t even talked about the great people here. People on Vancouver Island tend to have a unique spirit, a can-do attitude. After all, the people that live here have literally built the cities, roads, and bridges. We all have something we can contribute. We all have a voice and a part to play on this great stage. One thing I’ve learned is you can’t just waste away on the sofa, or expect that this world owes you, if you want to enjoy this one life we have to live you have to get up, get out there and makea positive imact! Seek out places in your city that speak to you. Find your passion, do amazing things and above all: “Carpe Diem”...Seize the day.
