DOLLAR EN E $ $ DEBT Is A Four Letter Word

By Sue Grubac

Yes, DEBT can be a bad word! It fills us with visions of irresponsibility and shame. Not all debt is bad; there is GOOD debt. The debt you get into when you take out a mortgage to buy a home is considered good debt. Student loans can also be considered good debt because they are increasing your knowledge and your earning potential. Another good debt can be a loan taken out to build a business. Then there’s BAD debt; consumer debt is considered BAD debt. When you use credit cards to shop and you don’t pay off the entire balance then that’s BAD debt! Getting into debt is easy. No one decides to get into debt, it happens so gradually you don’t see the warning signs. A bit of shopping here, a meal out there, some car repairs, slowly bit by bit it adds up. When the statement arrives, it’s bigger than you expected, things would be a bit tight if you pay it all so you pay part. Then the next month there’s the interest charges on top so again you pay only part, soon the balance starts to go up and before you know it, all you can afford is to make minimum payments and you’re in a financial mess. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an easy way to figure out if you had too much BAD debt? Well there is!! There’s a simple calculation to calculate your Critical Debt Load that will let you know if you’re in trouble. The calculation is based on the fact that to be financially healthy your monthly debt load must be less than 15% of your monthly income. Here’s how to calculate your Critical Debt Load: Critical Debt Load = Monthly Income X 0.15 This is how the calculation looks for a monthly take home income of $3,000:

Critical Debt Load = $3000 X 0.15 = $450 If you’re paying more than your Critical Debt Load to service your BAD debt then you’re headed into financial difficulty and it’s time to get help.

THAT’S THE WAY IT IS TOUR Interview with Randy Elvis Friskie Today, Friskie is one of the top Elvis Presley tribute artists in North America. His career has spanned three decades and he continues to pack concert halls wherever he plays. His January 2014 ‘That’s the way it is Tour’, Randy will be reliving the movie music memories from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. Joined by his daughter now 23, Cassandra who will be performing many female artists such as Marilyn Munro, Liza Minnelli and Cher. WO: Thanks for putting some time aside today Randy to talk to us. I love that you are doing a tour featuring special hits from Elvis movies, where did the idea come from. Randy: Its never been done before, and we are always looking to bring to life different parts of Elvis that people can relive. There are some great memories with the music in his movies. WO: Can we expect to see the stage set, and the outfits similar to the movies. Randy: Yes, most definitely, we have some big props, there will be a huge screen, and our outfits will match each movie. The tour has a huge crew, we want it to be just like the movie, right down to the white shorts and leis. You will see the same guitars with the same sounds, Its going to be a really cool show. WO: So how many of Elvis’s movies will we expect to hear songs from. Randy: His movies had great songs, and we will be performing one or two songs from just about all of them… WO: Randy you have been a musician since you were a kid, what do you say to people that call you an Elvis impersonator.

19

Randy: I’m not an impersonator I’m an entertainer that gives tribute to Elvis Presley. There are a lot of impersonators and many of them have the wrong attitude, Elvis wasn’t arrogant he was a humble guy, and very cool, he never had a rock star attitude. WO: Randy I have to say, everything about you is like Elvis, your sound, the way you move and even that cool sexy voice that Elvis had when he spoke; what is your female fan club like, and how do you keep it up. Randy: I have great fans, and yes lots of them are women… The moves just happen I don’t have anything planned I just move with the music, I can still do the splits, but after about 3 or 4 shows, I start to walk funny.

They call her the little girl with the big voice. Cassandra now 23 has been singing with her dad since she was 9 years old… WO: Cassie, What you will be bringing to the tour. Cassie: Most of Elvis Presley’s movies have a female star in each. I will be performing many of those, plus Marilyn Munro and Liza Minellie, plus back up vocals. WO: What was it like growing up with Elvis for a dad? Cassie: Well I thought it was normal, but then I realized I was the only girl that my dad asked to borrow eye-liner. WO: Whats the future for Cassandra Friskie. Cassie: Well Iam never afraid to try a new character, and as long as I’m singing I’m happy. I’m starting to do more shows on my own, and spend a lot of time in the recording studio. WO: It was great to talk to both of you, and I can’t wait for the new show. Thank you • Interviewed by, Cathy Kaardal from Whats On Digest.

An Epic Journey

K’ómoks Aboriginal Journeys Society Fundraiser As a fundraiser for the 2014 Tribal Journey to Bella Bella, the K’ómoks Aboriginal Journeys Society is hosting a New Year’s Celebration and Masquerade December 31st—6 PM to 2 AM. The semi-formal evening features an amazing array of door prizes and raffles, and a 50/50 draw along with complimentary appetizers and champagne to toast in the New Year. Tickets are now available at I-Hos Gallery or at the door: $50 per person (with dinner) or $25 after 8 PM (after dinner). Designated drivers available. The K’ómoks society’s goal is to send two ocean-going canoes on this epic, life-changing journey. A spiritual and cultural opportunity, the pullers will paddle from Comox to Bella Bella to join 100 canoes and their crewmembers from other BC coastal First Nations at the Qatuwas Big House dedication. For more information or to support this amazing initiative, please contact Tina McLean at 250.339.4545.

Pet Tips Trouble Treats AT CHRISTMAS:

As Christmas time approaches the festivity, music and joy of the season creeps in. Buying for your pet comes easy at this time of the year, with so much to choose from, you can sometimes end up with an unsafe or troublesome treat. Food: Christmas is a splurge of sweet treats, gourmet meats and nutty delights. Unfortunately, most of our favourite holiday snacks are also some of the most dangerous to our pets. Turkey, for one, can be dangerous to your pet if you are not careful to dispose of bones safely. Bones can easily puncture your pet’s lungs or digestive tract, or cause your animal to choke, either of which can potentially be fatal. Chocolate is another potential hazard, and can actually kill your dog or cat depending on their size, the type of chocolate and the quantity consumed. It can also lead to extreme hyperactivity or even seizures in your animal. It’s important to avoid keeping chocolates in easily accessible areas for pets, such as hanging in stockings or on your tree. A special treat on Christmas day for your pet try mixing up their food, and giving them a different kind or some canned food instead of dry.

Trees: Many of the beautiful and fragrant trees and plants we fill our homes with at Christmas are dangerous for our pets. Popular plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are extremely toxic if ingested, and can cause anything from gastrointestinal upset to cardiac problems to comas to death. Keep them far out of reach. Luckily, your Christmas tree isn’t toxic, and shouldn’t pose any serious threat to your pet, so long as you avoid using chemicals in the water.

Decorations: There are a wide range of decorations people use to brighten up their homes for the holidays, and a wide range of hazards that accompany them. From the toxic artificial snow in the windows to sharp staples and tacks that that deck the halls, decorations should be used with caution. All electrical wires should be taped down or placed behind heavy furniture. Also, gift wrapping supplies should be carefully stored. All of these items can be tempting for pets and are often mistaken for toys.
