Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular with Katy Bowen-Roberts WO: What inspired you to create the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular? KBR: 8 years ago, I was working as a singer in England. I was performing for the 3rd consecutive year in a 10-week Christmas production. I was looking for a way to move into the production side of theatre, so while performing, I watched and learned how the process worked and used it as my inspiration to create my own show. WO: Why Vancouver Island? KBR: The island is home! My goal was always to move back to BC but work was hard to find. I wanted to create more employment for myself as well as for other Canadian artists. WO: Can you tell us about some of your past artists? KBR: Definitely! We’ve been fortunate to have worked with some remarkable talent. Many artists have used our Show as a springboard to some amazing roles. Some of our past talents include: Nanaimo’s Shae Apland (Opera singer working in Connecticut), Toronto’s Scott Walters (currently playing Bert in Vancouver Arts Club’s Mary Poppins), Vancouver’s Stacey Hughes (also seen dancing as a Rockette in L.A.), New York’s Dana Hunter (currently touring NYC’s ‘West Side Story’), Toronto’s Todd Delaney (seen in the past in the Canadian Opera trio, ‘Romanza’) to name just a few…

In May of this year, we auditioned over 100 singers and dancers in Vancouver for the 2013 show. It is always exciting to watch these young artists emerge and grow. WO: How do you put together the music? KBR: In February of each year, I spend hours listening to and selecting music, which I then fit into my show formula. In April I meet with James Mark, our wonderful Music Arranger (a Vancouver Island University professor, who recently composed a symphony for the Vancouver Island Symphony). James then spends the next 6 months arranging the music selections. This year, he arranged over 50 pieces of music for 4 voice parts and 7 instruments. WO: What’s your favorite thing about creating this show? KBR: I love show time! I love welcoming the audiences and seeing how they are affected by the power of live music and dance. I love hearing the conversations after the exciting Act I finale or how they are moved by the nostalgia tribute or even just the reaction to their old favorite Christmas song. I feel so fortunate to be able to provide an opportunity for friends and family to unite together through art. WO: How do we get tickets? KBR: Tickets are already over 65% sold including 4 sold-out matinees. Call 250.754.8550 to book and visit our website www.yellowpointchristmasspectacular.ca for more information.

Winter Road Trip Safety Tips Article by Simon Rideout

Taking a winter road trip can be an affordable and fun way to get away this holiday season. But don’t leave your garage without reading (and following) these Whats On Wheels car safety tips: • Take your car in for a service check up. Have your vehicle inspected for belts and hoses that could be cracked. Are the lights all working? We have long hours of darkness, and you want to be able to see the road-with your regular lights and your high beams-and you want to make sure your tail lights are working so other cars can see you, too. • Look at your battery's condition. Battery power drops in cold weather. If you have a gas-powered car, it uses more battery power to start when it's cold outside than when it's warm. If you have an electric car, you may have a shorter driving range. Ask your mechanic to check your battery to ensure it has enough juice, and also check the charging

system. If you drive a hybrid with a gasoline back up system make sure you have gas in case you lose your electric charge.

Are the lights all working? We have long hours • The coolant in your car of darkness, and you want to be expands in freezing temperatures. That expandable to see...

ing mass could cause major damage to your car's engine. Be sure to check that the amount of coolant in your vehicle is the proper amount (see owner's manual), and make sure the coolant you're using is made for the winter conditions.

Illness and Debt Walk Hand In Hand Did you know that over half of the clients I’ve helped get out of debt had a serious illness or accident which contributed to their financial situation? In fact, 28% of Canadians have experienced a serious health crisis in their lifetime and nearly half of those Canadians who faced a major health incident like cancer or a stroke are struggling financially as a result of their illnesses. Too many people live with the illusion that “it” can only happen to someone else. On top of that, they grossly underestimate the out-of-pocket health costs associated with a major health incident. Even if they have a medical plan the savings can often be less than $1000. When faced with a personal health crisis, those without medical benefits have limited options: tapping into personal savings, borrowing from friends and family, remortgaging or selling their home or living on credit cards or lines of credit. When forced to make one of these choices, people’s stress levels increase astronomically. Not only are they dealing with a health crisis but they are also facing a financial crisis; the combined stress can be crippling and can seriously impede the healing process. Thankfully, on the financial side, there options to relieve the financial stress, eliminate the debt and give people a second chance at having a financial healthy future. Critical Debt Load = $3000 X 0.15 = $450

Thankfully, on the financial side, there options to relieve the financial stress, eliminate the debt and give people a second chance at having a financial healthy future.

If you're paying more than your Critical Debt Load to service your BAD debt then you're headed into financial difficulty and it's time to get help.

Tips for Mind-Stimulating Fun

If you're still not sure on how you might get your senior loved one interested in pursuing some mind-stimulating activities, consult the following list of ideas from Home Instead Senior Care: Video action. Interactive video games have become popular for family members of all ages. Some games, such as Nintendo's Brain Age, and the new Wii home video game system, are particularly good for stimulating seniors' minds. Computer savvy not needed. Even seniors who are intimidated by the computer still can play online and other computer games. Why not try to help them get started playing Solitaire or joining an online bridge game? Organize game night. Board or card games offer a great avenue for mind stimulation. Encourage your senior loved one to get a few friends together to join in the fun. The magic of music. Many seniors were avid musicians in earlier years and some may still have pianos or other instruments in their homes. Ask them to play you a tune or challenge them to learn an instrument.

Natural LATEX

Interactive video games have become popular for family members of all ages. Tournament fun. Bridge and Scrabble tournaments for seniors are springing up around the country. Check with your local senior center or Home Instead Senior Care office to learn of any activities in your area. Or encourage your older adult to join a local bridge group. Think big. Crossword, large-piece jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles are great pastimes for seniors who need a mind-stimulating activity when they are alone.

PET TIP Christmas with pets

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb, Applecross Veterinary Hospital

The Holiday Season tends to sneak up on us. There are, however, a few things to remember in this busy time when it comes to our four-legged family members. First, this is NOT a good time of year to decide to adopt a new family member. No matter how cute and adorable they are, and how well you can imagine the look on the kids’ faces when you bring in the new fur-ball with a great big red ribbon, it is not a good idea. No, I’m not trying to be the Grinch and steal your Christmas…the long and the short if it is just this: puppies and kittens are a lot of work. On Christmas Day there’s typically a lot going on. If you add a new puppy or kitten to the mix just be prepared for soiled carpet and a healthy does of chaos. Now, assuming you already have one or several pets, Christmas is fun for the whole family – and it’s always fun to include your furry family members in on the fun. I love to get the dogs a new chewy bone and “wrap” it for them to have something to do on Christmas morning. The cats get catnip toys which changes them back into kittens and amuses everyone. They will usually take their toys away and go to their favourite spots to enjoy. Amidst all of the fun, food, and family, here are some things to remember to keep your pets healthy and happy through the holidays:

enjoys it. We get canned food as a special treat for all the pets to enjoy the night we have Christmas dinner (that’s special for them…they don’t get canned food at our house). We have special treats just for the pets that family and friends can give out, so that they are not tempted to provide rich food or dangerous treats. We changed to metal tinsel that hangs on the tree with the ornaments instead of hanging string tinsel. The kids decorate and eat gingerbread men instead of hanging them on the tree. The kids decorate the house, the dogs get reindeer hats (which by the way one of them actually likes!), and we enjoy Christmas together. So, from our family to all of yours have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

1) Poinsettias – these festive plants are poisonous to cats and dogs. Keep these flowers out of reach of your pets, or don’t have them. 2) String tinsel and ribbons – Strings and stringlike items can get stuck in the intestines or, sometimes, can become partially stuck. Remove ribbons and string tinsel before they become a problem, or put presents with ribbons on them in a closed-off area where cats can’t get at them. 3) Food – this is a huge part of most people’s Christmas. Remember that our dogs and cats are not able to process the rich treats that we humans enjoy. All in all, Christmas is a wonderful time of year. I love seeing the lights and decorating the house. I love how excited the whole family gets and how all the pets pick up on the excitement. We’ve made some changes to our Christmas over the years to ensure that everyone

THAT’S THE WAY IT IS TOUR Interview with Randy Elvis Friskie Today, Friskie is one of the top Elvis Presley tribute artists in North America. His career has spanned three decades and he continues to pack concert halls wherever he plays. His January 2014 “That’s’s the way it is Tour, Randy will be reliving the movie music memories from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. Joined by his daughter now 23, Cassandra who will be performing many female artists such as Marilyn Munro, Liza Minnelli and Cher. WO: Thanks for putting some time aside today Randy to talk to the Whats On Digest. I love that you are doing a tour featuring special hits from Elvis movies, where did the idea come from. Randy: Its never been done before, and we are always looking to bring to life different parts of Elvis that people can relive. There are some great memories with the music in his movies. WO: Can we expect to see the stage set, and the outfits to be similar to the movies. Randy: Yes, most definitely, we have some big props, there will be a huge screen, and our outfits will match each movie. The tour has a huge crew, we want it to be just like the movie, right down to the white shorts and leis. You will see the same guitars with the same sounds, Its going to be a really cool show WO: So how many of Elvis’s movies will we expect to hear songs from. Randy: His movies had great songs, and we will be performing one or two songs from just about all of them… WO: Randy you have been a musician since you were a kid, what do you say to people that call you an Elvis impersonator.

27

Randy: I’m not an impersonator I’m an entertainer that gives tribute to Elvis Presley. There are a lot of impersonators and many of them have the wrong attitude, Elvis wasn’t arrogant he was a humble guy, and very cool, he never had a rock star attitude. WO: Randy I have to say, everything about you is like Elvis, your sound, the way you move and even that cool sexy voice that Elvis had when he spoke; what is your female fan club like, and how do you keep it up. Randy: I have great fans, and yes lots of them are women… The moves just happen I don’t have anything planned I just move with the music, I can still do the splits, but after about 3 or 4 shows, I start to walk funny.

They call her the little girl with the big voice. Cassandra now 23 has been singing with her dad since she was 9 years old… WO: Cassie, What you will be bringing to the tour. Cassie: Most of Elvis Presley’s movies have a female star in each. I will be performing many of those, plus Marilyn Munro and Liza Minellie, plus back up vocals. WO: What was it like growing up with Elvis for a dad? Cassie: Well I thought it was normal, but then I realized only my dad borrowed my eyeliner. WO: Whats the future for Cassandra Friskie. Cassie: Well Iam never afraid to try a new character, and as long as I’m singing I’m happy. I’m starting to do more shows on my own, and spend a lot of time in the recording studio. WO: It was great to talk to both of you, and I can’t wait for the new show. Thank you • Interviewed by, Cathy Kaardal from Whats On Digest.

Whats On Music As part of their North American headlining tour, definitive hard rock band BUCKCHERRY makes its first-ever visit to Vancouver Island. This multi-platinum powerhouse has firmly established itself with a massive presence on the radio and on the road! With six studio albums the band has produced 11 singles that hit the Top 40, including the massive crossover hit “Sorry”, “Riding”, “Everything” and “Too Drunk” and the #1 “Lit Up” on Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. Their album Confessions (2013) saw the release of “Gluttony” and “Nothing Left But Tears”. Formed in 1995 by lead vocalist Josh Todd and lead guitarist Keith Nelson, the band was reborn in 2005 with the founding duo still at the helm. They have never looked or sounded better! From the early days playing the Hollywood club scene through the tours opening for notables LENNY KRAVITZ, AC/DC and KISS to their well-earned status as headliners in their own right, BUCKCHERRY has quite literally done it all. The band was a part of the infamous Woodstock 99, Mötley Crüe’s Crüe Fest (2008) and the Kerrang! Week Of Rock Tour at the HMV Forum in London as well as Rocklahoma 2010 in Pryor, Oklahoma. Do not

miss your chance to experience this incomparable band live and up close! The hard-rocking band AIRBOURNE is an incredible product of Oz. Their debut album, Runnin' Wild (2007) peaked in the top 30 on the ARIA Albums Chart and top 40 on New Zealand's RIANZ Albums Chart. It also placed on the UK Albums Chart and Billboard 200. The album issued the singles “Runnin' Wild”, “Diamond in the Rough” and “Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast" which became a playable track on the video game Guitar Hero; World Tour. Their second album, No Guts No Glory (2010), landed in the Top 20 on the ARIA Albums Chart, peaked at #31 in the UK and reached the Top 100 on the Billboard 200. Founding members, brothers Joel and Ryan O'Keeffe, took to music at an early age. Under the influence of AC/DC, The Angels, Billy Thorpe and Rose Tattoo and keeping the Pub Rock tradition alive, this fourpiece won the statewide band competition, Push-On, in Melbourne (2004). AIRBOURNE went on a UK Tour supporting Iron Maiden on their Final Frontier World Tour. Known for their ferocious live shows, the band’s legion of fans can definitely expect them to deliver on this visit to the Great White North.
