breakfast with santa december 8, 2013 story by BRENDA GOUGH

T

o help celebrate the festive season, kids and their families in Parksville, Qualicum Beach and the surrounding areas of district 69 are invited to breakfast with the jolly old man himself. Proudly presented by the Parksville Lions Club, in partnership with the Parksville Community & Conference Centre (PCCC) and joyfully sponsored by a group of local businesses, Breakfast with Santa will take place on December 8th at the PCCC. Admission is by donation and breakfast with the legendary man in red will include pancakes, sausages, hot chocolate, coffee, juice and even timbits. Over the last 10 years, the Parksville Lions Breakfast with Santa project has been a very popular event in the community. Last year, more than 300 people filled the PCCC, which was decorated like a winter wonderland for the event. In a recent phone interview from Mexico, where Santa was warming his old bones before getting ready for the busy holiday season, old St. Nick admitted he was busy getting caught up on all the latest technology. “I need to know what the difference is between a Nintendo DS3 and a Sony PS4,” he explained. Santa said he had a jolly fun time when he stopped to eat breakfast with local families

in Parksville last year, and what touched him the most was seeing how happy all the little children were to see him. “It’s not always all about the presents. Kids look at you in awe like you are a mystical creature and most of them aren’t scared of me,” he said. While some kids need a little coaxing to reveal their toy requests, Santa said others don’t even ask for toys for themselves. “Some just want to ensure that Santa brings a gift for a brother or sister.” In addition to enjoying breakfast with Santa, kids can also make holiday crafts. Don’t forget to bring your camera for a picture of your children or grandchildren with old St. Nicholas. Breakfast with Santa takes place on Sunday December 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Parksville Community & Conference Centre (PCCC), located at 132 East Jensen Avenue.

bethlehem walk december 14 – 17 story by BRENDA GOUGH

I

t is almost time to taste, smell and hear the real life Bethlehem village at the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church.

After a one year hiatus by the congregation and volunteers at Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, the Bethlehem Walk returns December 14-17 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. nightly. If you want to get a taste of the Holy Land and experience the biblical story of Christmas without leaving Vancouver Island, then you won’t want to miss the massive undertaking that recreates Bethlehem as it would have been 2,000 years ago. It takes a tremendous amount of work to put on the event and this year’s coordinator Gail Barbero said hundreds of people have pitched in their time and effort to make it happen. “It is a major undertaking and we are striving for excellence but it is our gift to the community and we are happy to do it.” The free event includes hot chocolate, cookies and carolling and it is an opportunity to make a donation to the local food bank. In 2011, the event generated $14,281 for the Salvation Army. In the past, thousands of people have flocked to the church to experience the

sights, sounds and textures of the recreated Bethlehem. The biblical village includes real live barn animals, a bustling marketplace and more than 250 people in period costume demonstrating things like ancient baking and blacksmithing. It also includes the famous manger nativity scene. Krystal and Steve Crompton and their newborn baby have volunteered to take on the starring roles of this year’s event and will appear nightly in the manger. Vivienne Jude, who was born in October this year, will play the role of the baby Jesus and her parents will star as Mary and Joseph. In previous years the church has added new attractions to the event and Barbero said this year is no exception. “We have taken out older booths and replaced them and we now have a family booth. This was a booth we had a number of years ago … it will look like a regular every day family doing what they do in the evening.” She added the dramas, nativity set and shepherds in the field will all be new. Barbero said the event is an opportunity to share the gift of Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ with the community.

We want people when they “smell what they smell, see what they see, that they walk out with wonder and joy in their hearts and maybe new hope.

~ Gail Barbero

“We want people when they smell what they smell, see what they see, that they walk out with wonder and joy in their hearts and maybe new hope. The theme this year is joy and that will permeate the whole place. “Lots of people don’t know Jesus and we want to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus.” The Bethlehem Walk takes place nightly at the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church at 550 Pym Street North from Dec. 14-17, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On December 16 at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. people in care facilities and other groups in the community can experience the walk.

Cinderella december 12 – 29 story by BRENDA GOUGH

B

ooing and hissing are encouraged at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach when Echo Players presents Cinderella for thirteen performances, from December 12 to 29. Don’t expect the Disney version of the classic fairy tale to play out on stage. Cleverly crafted by Simon Nye, Cinderella is one the greatest British Pantomimes around. Lynne Carrow and Sue Murguly are codirecting the production which they insist will appeal to everyone in the family. In the UK a Pantomime or Panto as it is affectionately called, is a musical show, based around a popular fairy tale performed during the Christmas season. To the uninitiated and non-British theatregoer, the production can leave a first time Panto viewer scratching their head over the silly character names, twisted humour and insane plot. However, Carrow and Murguly both assured that their production is clever enough to really satisfy the British ex-pats but also appeal to everyone. “There is cross dressing, a lot of slap stick, some sexual innuendo and a lot of things that adults will get that kids won’t get but kids will still laugh at because it is so funny,” explained Carrow.

Murguly admitted that they do feel the pressure to live up to a traditional Christmas Pantomime but they are confident it will delight the young and young at heart. “It is funny and very entertaining but there are a few little twists to it,” Murguly hinted. With a beautiful Cinderella, two ugly sisters, faithful Buttons, a charming Prince, magical Good Fairy, evil Baroness and cheeky Dandini this production of Cinderella also includes a stunning set and costumes, magical music and choreography that will bring the classic tale to life. Carrow said there are a lot of local references in the script and the wardrobe is wild. “Our Cinderella is not your typical blonde hair and blue eyed Cinderella of Disney and the step sisters are always played by men,” Carrow described. The co-directors are thrilled that they have so many young actors in the cast who they assure will impress the audiences and leave them rolling in the aisles. “People will be impressed by the level of talent,” said Murgly. Everyone gets a chance to go to the ball in ECHO Players production of Cinderella, on stage from Decembver 12 to 29 at the Village Theatre, 110 Second Avenue West, Qualicum Beach.

Platinum Marketing to get your home SOLD

From my personal experience, the ‘Platinum Service’ slogan adorning their logo is not just business jargon but rather a true reflection of their team’s performance. I have no reservations in recommending their services to any prospective client.

Rob Ohs and his staff can be commended for their first class approach… the photos were extraordinary and made our house look wonderful… Rob’s knowledge of the market was exceptional, and that knowledge led to a very quick sale…
