Hundreds of years after the romantics of the Middle Ages,

lovers, couples and spouses express their tenderness for each other on February 14 by giving conventional gifts of flowers, chocolate and handwritten cards and letters.

Is this trend on its way out? Do people want to celebrate the

traditional Valentines Day in a non-traditional manner? We asked

the people what they want out of Valentines Day 2014, and it appears those classic heart-felt customs are no longer quite what lo-

Tradition Valentine NOT !

cals are looking for from their sweethearts.

Although we received many romantic and unusual responses to our question, one generous woman told us that her ideal way to spend Valentines Day would be to

donate blood with her paramour. A true romantic! (Or maybe she just loves to hear him scream!)

If you are scared of blood, but not commitment, one woman expressed her desire to receive a homemade, sentimental gift which shows love, thought and effort. From

her beau she wants no flowers, no expensive dinner, and no hot date night, but a deck

of cards expressing only 52 reasons why

he loves her. If he

plays (and prepares) those cards right, he won’t have to com-

pliment her for a full

year – she can simply pull a card each week for the next 12 months!

Other locals will be saving their cash this year in favour

of atypical and creative dates – their heart’s desires in-

aditional entines or NOT !

cluded creating a breakfast of eggs cracked and cooked into heart-shaped toast cutouts; a family walk along the beach (with the kids) searching for heart shaped rocks; a night alone playing pool with the wife, laughing at

each other; making heart-shaped homemade pizzas together, or running a hot bath, with a beer, for him, then throwing the dog in for a wash too!

You may not want the usual Valentines Day cel-

ebrations this year, so in honour of your relation-

ship or friendship, be it new or old, worn or torn,

perhaps check out the opposite page for ideas on what is happening this February 14 in Comox Valley… just be cautious if the wife offers to run you a bath!

Love is in the air! L'Association des francophones de Nanaimo invites you to celebrate St. Valentine’s Weekend at the 13th edition of the Maple Sugar Festival du Sucre d’Érable, taking place once again at Nanaimo’s Beban Park Auditorium. Join us for three days of music, food, and interactive fun from February 14 to 16. Guaranteed to be a fabulous time for you and your loved ones! May we suggest a great Valentine's Day gift idea? Buying sweets for your sweetheart. And, oh, how sweet they are! Choose from a wide variety of maple syrups and maple candies and butter. Be sure to taste the amazing tire sur la neige (toffy on snow). Your family will love it! Not a sweet tooth, you say? Then, fall in love with authentic poutine, tourtières (meat pies), ragout (meat stew), and other tasty traditional French Canadian food. And what would a traditional sugar shack be without lively musical entertainment? Bon Débarras and Bijoux du Bayou return to the Festival to get you tapping your feet, clapping your hands, and dancing with your loved ones after having enjoyed delicious food. Newcomers De Temps Antan and Jocelyn Pettit will have you burning calories quickly with their rhythmic fiddle, harmonica, and accordion music. Plus, the whole family will love singing along in French and English with Will Stroet and the Backyard Band and long-time duo Fanny Starchild & Vegari Candar. Share in the joie de vivre of Vancouver Island’s largest bilingual festival. On vous attend avec plaisir! We'd love to have you join in the festivities at Beban Park!

A Cajun named Jean Paul moved to Texas and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, but I got some bad news. The donkey died.” “Well then, just give me my money back.” “I can’t do that. I went and spent it already.” “OK then, just unload the donkey.” “What ya gonna do with em.”

14-2 FEB WO CValley.indd 24

“I’m gonna raffle him off.” “Ya can’t raffle off a dead donkey!” “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anyone he’s dead.” A month later the farmer met up with the Cajun and asked, “What happened with the dead donkey?” “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 apiece and made a profit of $898.” “Didn’t anyone complain?” “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2 back.”

Problem with Overweight Dogs According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 54% of the nation’s dogs and cats are overweight. Ernie Ward, DVM and founder of APOP is not happy about it. “We often try to compare what’s happening with our pets to the childhood obesity epidemic, since it’s a similar pattern that emerges,” said Dr. Ward. “The biggest problem is that by the time most people recognize the problem, it’s often too late.” So why is it that having an obese dog is such a problem? Dr. Ward broke it down. The Two Main Problems with Overweight Dogs. There are really two factors to keep in mind when you consider the issues associated with overweight and obese dogs, says Dr. Ward: health and money. The first, health, should come as no surprise to those who are aware of all the health issues that overweight people have to deal with. “It’s not only the fact that obese dogs face a shorter life expectancy, but it’s the quality

of the life they’re leading in the first place,” says the doctor. A few of the major health issues that obese dogs and cats have to deal with include osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, cancer and more. “The real heartbreaker for me as a vet, though, is that these pets have such a diminished quality of life,”Dr. Ward said. “I see the consequences, and I wish for those pets that I could roll back the tape to five years ago and say ‘let’s change a few minor things here and there and we could have avoided all of this.’ It’s avoidable, not inevitable.” Besides the health factors, Dr. Ward is also astounded by the amount of money that is spent when it comes to treating obese pets. He estimates that obese animals are costing owners tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars in unnecessary medical bills each year. “From an economic perspective this is huge,” he said. In fact, according to Dr. Ward a lot of the vet care expenses associated with weight issues would go away if we would all start making smarter and better food choices for our pets. You heard that right; better pet food choices can help save you money!

Sam I am... New Publisher of What’s On Digest Comox Valley The What’s On Digest team would like to introduce our newest family member – publisher and director of the Comox Valley What’s On Digest, Sam Kroemer. Sam has extensive business management experience, and brings this varied expertise to the What’s On Digest team. After his move to the Comox Valley as a young man in the 1980’s, Sam left the island for the mainland in search of work, though he continued to return to Comox Valley several times a year. Sam soon settled in Kamloops, where for years, he was a publican to the local community. Sam returned to the Comox Valley, with plenty of business and life experience, inspired by the appeal of being close to his parents and the wonderful community environment he recognized years ago. He now had a family of his own, and he believed the Valley offered an ideal setting for raising children. Readers of What’s On Digest may remember Sam’s father, Hans Kroemer, who was the President of the Comox Valley Horticultural Society for many years. Sam joined the What’s On Digest team because he has a true appreciation for his community, and he wanted to integrate himself as his father had done. Sam has always been involved in local events and wanted to give back to his community. What’s On Digest Comox Valley appealed to Sam because “it is a grass-roots, community-based “ – he recognized the value in this immediately as “there is so much more happening in the Comox Valley than people realize… and What’s On Digest brings these events to light.”
