Shoppers Drugmart Store Manager, Shaun Dietrich has a history of successful management for the past 14 years and enjoys being a part of the team that is growing the new and evolving Shoppers Drugmart. Shoppers Drugmart continues to embed itself in the convenience store market share, with everything from pharmaceuticals, postal services, celebration products, beauty to daily living needs.

John Chasmar 1-604-331-5209

The now one year old Timberline Village store has over 40 staff members, with 5 managers, the largest store in the Timberline Village complex. With a large growth spurt to the south of Campbell River many people are thrilled with the location being the optimum convenience stop, that is on the way home. Bringing the Canada Post service into Shoppers Drugmart has created a new flow to the store, Jane the post office manager, is trained by Canada Post, but employed by Shoppers Drugmart, for customers that means a full service post office 7 days a week. Shaun says, the store is seeing over three times the customers today compared to one year ago. You will notice in 2015 new arrivals of ‘Life’ brand products in the food area, but still a great selection of ‘Life’ brand in pharmaceuticals and Balea in the bath sections. There is a big win on ‘Life’ brands especially in pharmaceuticals, with savings of around 30%. When I asked Shaun, “Whats the difference” between national brands and ‘Life’ he said, ‘minimal, they are both comparable to give the same results” Other new arrivals in food and pet consumables you can expect to see in Shoppers is ‘Presidents Choice’ and ‘No Name’.

Beauty department manager Caroline who is a specialist in beauty products can guide you through the large fragrance section as well as cosmetics that include house brands such as Quo, No. 7 and Gosh all the top name brands for everyday beauty. Special occassion products such as Carnaby Candy lines and Russell Stover chocolates are strong contenders in quality and fine treats. That general store that you remember from 30 years ago has not disappeared it just got bigger. Shoppers Drugmart has raised the bar on convenience shopping and has created a store that recognizes the 21st century customer. What’s in the future? Well that would be spilling the beans, but you can be sure that it will be more convenience with greater rewards and savings. written by Cathy Kaardal

GAME CHANGER ON BC LIQUOR LAWS Good news for Home Brew businesses and other Liquor serving establishments. The 6th annual BC Wine & Liquor Law Conference is set for February 23rd in Vancouver, BC. where we will see some significant changes to BC’s wine and liquor policies scheduled to come into effect from April 2015. This follows previous changes made in June 2014 that changed, the minimum drink price to $3 for a single-ounce cocktail, a five-ounce glass of wine or a 12-ounce sleeve of beer. “With happy hours up and running in B.C., operators can cater to groups by offering drink specials for ‘team nights,’ for example, helping fill their seats on slow days or during not-so-busy times,” Poma Dhaliwal, president of the Alliance of Beverage Licensees, said in a statement. Other changes to provincial liquor laws include dropping the requirement for customers to order food with drinks in a licensed restaurant and allowing hosts with a special occasion licence to serve homemade and U-brew beer, wine or cider. Government officials said the new rules balance industry needs with health and safety considerations.

In January, the provincial government endorsed 73 recommendations in a report on B.C. liquor laws. Those changes include increasing the variety of alcohol available at sporting events and allowing mixed-spirit drinks at music festivals and in sports venues. The province will also allow liquor sales at grocery stores come April 15. Some other changes effecting home made wine and beer allow you to travel internationally by packing it in your checked in luggage. SPECIAL OCCASION LICENCE: For Public and Private events ( e.g. Weddings, Tastings and Community Festivals) If you want to serve commercial or custom home made liquor or beer in a public place or sell liquor anywhere, you will need either a private or public Special Occasion Licence. Here’s what you need to know: Individuals are only eligible to apply for a private family Special Occasion Licence for family-related events such as weddings or family reunions. Non-profit organizations may apply for either a private or public Special Occasion Licence for an event they are hosting. Businesses or event planners are generally not eligible to apply for a Special Occasion Licence. And in case you missed the game changer announced in July 2012, Bring your own wine to any restaurant is becoming more popular by the day in Campbell River.... You can pay expect to pay a corkage fee of anything between $15 to $8 depending on the restaurant or what day of the week it is. Note: The restaurant reserves the right to participate and change the corkage fee, so its a good idea to phone ahead.

Pets & Equestrian

What happens when two horse crazy little girls meet? Usually there are some riding lessons and maybe the family dog get subjected to a few jumping lessons. Well, for myself (Wanda Gust) and Susan Gosnell (my best friend) we opted to make our childhood dream a reality in September 2013 when we purchased Balance Equestrian Center (formerly Shady Stables). When we purchased the property there was a lot of work that needed to be done and Susan’s husband Dave learned very fast how to drive a tractor, fix burst pipes, wire lights and the logistics of re-surfacing riding rings. We have some amazing friends and volunteers and parents that put in more hours than we can count to help us get the place ship shape. The result of all this hard work is a brand new all-weather sand outdoor riding ring, expanded and resurfaced all-weather paddocks, drainage for both the indoor riding ring and out door ring, along with a fresh coat of paint and numerous other improvements. The goal of both myself and Susan is to have a fun, safe environment where students can learn about all aspects of horse care and riding. We grew up

learning that riding was not all just about sitting on a pony and galloping through fields but hard work and a lot of shoveling and sweeping were involved. This is something that we strive to pass on to students young and not so young. All things come with a little hard work but if you love animals and in particular horses it pays to know how to care for them including picking up manure. This ethic has resulted in us offering a helper program where students can work at the barn in exchange for riding lessons. We also wanted to offer lessons not only for able-bodied riders but also therapeutic riding. So we now offer both certified English riding lessons as well as certified therapeutic lessons. There are gift certificates available for both type of lessons. For more information on Balance Equestrian Center please contact us via FaceBook, BalanceEquestrian@outlook. com or call 250-202-3105.
