Cumberland Heritage Fair February 21 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Cumberland Recreation Institute 2665 Dunsmuir Ave.

As part of B.C. Heritage Week, which begins with the national Heritage Day on Monday, February 16, this year’s heritage fair will be the 11th annual event in Cumberland. It was launched by a group of community volunteers in 2003 and was modelled on the folk festival that ran from 1949 to 1958 celebrating the diverse heritage of Cumberlanders. Each year families, clubs, and other organizations set up displays of antique tools, unique collections, photos, and demonstrations of crafts and folklore of the early days of Cumberland and the Comox Valley.

This year’s displays will include traditional embroidery from Brazil and Norway, quilters, weavers, and lacemakers (oh my!), antique coins, cameras, and much more. There will also be performances including old time fiddle and banjo tunes and Polynesian dance. In addition the Cumberland Museum & Archives will be open by donation all day and will have a scavenger hunt for kids with prizes awarded at the end of the day.

All you idiots fall out.” As the rest of the squad wandered away, one soldier remained at attention. The Drill Instructor walked over until he was eye to eye with him, and then raised a single eyebrow. The soldier smiled and said, “Sure was a lot of ‘em, huh, sir?”

Pets & Equestrian What happens when two horse crazy little girls meet? Usually there are some riding lessons and maybe the family dog get subjected to a few jumping lessons. Well, for myself (Wanda Gust) and Susan Gosnell (my best friend) we opted to make our childhood dream a reality in September 2013 when we purchased Balance Equestrian Center (formerly Shady Stables). When we purchased the property there was a lot of work that needed to be done and Susan’s husband Dave learned very fast how to drive a tractor, fix burst pipes, wire lights and the logistics of re-surfacing riding rings. We have some amazing friends and volunteers and parents that put in more hours than we can count to help us get the place ship shape. The result of all this hard work is a brand new all-weather sand outdoor riding ring, expanded and resurfaced all-weather paddocks, drainage for both the indoor riding ring and out door ring, along with a fresh coat of paint and numerous other improvements. The goal of both myself and Susan is to have a fun, safe environment where students can learn about all aspects of horse care and riding. We grew up

31

learning that riding was not all just about sitting on a pony and galloping through fields but hard work and a lot of shoveling and sweeping were involved. This is something that we strive to pass on to students young and not so young. All things come with a little hard work but if you love animals and in particular horses it pays to know how to care for them including picking up manure. This ethic has resulted in us offering a helper program where students can work at the barn in exchange for riding lessons. We also wanted to offer lessons not only for able-bodied riders but also therapeutic riding. So we now offer both certified English riding lessons as well as certified therapeutic lessons. There are gift certificates available for both type of lessons. For more information on Balance Equestrian Center please contact us via FaceBook, BalanceEquestrian@outlook. com or call 250-202-3105.
