chip your tree january 5 story by BRENDA GOUGH
I
t’s the centrepiece of the holiday season in most homes, but in the New Year, people will inevitably look to get rid of their Christmas trees. If you’re looking for a way to dispose of your tree in an environmentally-friendly way while supporting a worthwhile cause, than you won’t want to miss a local chipping event that is being held on January 5th at Thrifty Foods in Parksville. From 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Hud Elgood of Branching Out Urban Forestry will have his 16-inch wood chipper set up in the west side of the Thrifty Foods parking lot. Elgood, along with his wife and three children, will recycle your Christmas tree and turn it into wood chips for a donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society. Having lost his mother to breast cancer
when he was a young boy, Elgood said he is happy to recycle the trees for a good cause. He began offering his chipping service 10 years ago and since then he has collected more than $7,000 for cancer research. “We get overwhelming support in the community. People come with their trees every year and they are generous.” Elgood said his children enjoy helping drag the trees to the chipper and each year they shred up to 100 trees. He said the biggest tree they have chipped was about 15 feet high. He reminds everyone to remove all screws, nails, lights, and ornaments from your tree before dropping it off. Elgood said chipping your tree instead of throwing it out will help reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.

~ Hud Elgood, Branching Out Urban Forestry
Tree chipping is just one of the many things Branching Out Urban Forestry does throughout the year to enhance and give back to the community. Elgood said they have also planted trees at Errington Elementary School. Thrifty Foods will be providing hot chocolate and coffee at the event, which runs from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5th in the parking lot of Thrifty Foods in Parksville.

free yoga classes january 18 story by BRENDA GOUGH
Y
oga has been practiced for more than 5000 years, so it can hardly be called a trend.
Known for its far-reaching health benefits, this powerful practice could help get you focused, strong, stable and inspired for the New Year. Bare Roots Natural Health and Yoga Centre in Parksville is offering free yoga classes on Saturday, January 18th so you can see for yourself why yoga is so amazing. There will be three all-levels yoga classes to choose from in the fully equipped studio. Crystal McMillan, owner/operator of the new health facility located at French Creek Landing, says she is welcoming the community to visit her new studio and discover why yoga is beneficial for everyone, particularly when New Year’s resolutions have been set.
“Yoga is a great way to bring in the New Year. It helps build willpower and discipline. It’s all about stretching and strengthening the body and mind.” Practicing yoga on a regular basis offers all kinds of mental and physical health benefits. Some, like improved flexibility, are clearly evident. Others, including mental clarity and stress reduction, may be more subtle but are just as powerful. When put together, all the benefits contribute to an increased feeling of well-being, which explains why McMillan has been a yoga addict for so long. McMillan is an E-RYT500 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher at the 500-Hour Level) and has been teaching yoga for 26 years. For several years she ran a studio on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and taught yoga for the recreation department in Ucluelet and Tofino.

At the physical level, yoga has proven to be extremely effective for various disorders. Just a few of the benefits include: increased flexibility, toning muscles, increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons, massaging of all organs of the body and detoxification.
In October she opened her Parksville health and yoga centre where she also offers nutritional counselling. She agreed that a lot of people are discovering yoga as a way to bring health into their bodies.
By gently stretching muscles and joints as well as massaging the various organs, yoga ensures the optimum blood supply to various parts of the body. This helps in the flushing out of toxins and leads to benefits such as delayed ageing, increased energy, clarity and a remarkable zest for life.
“Yoga is known as a therapy for healing. It is restorative and gentle... it is not about whether or not you can touch your toes,” she explained.
Free yoga classes take place on January 18th at Bare Roots Natural Health and Yoga Centre, located at #203- 891 West Island Highway in Parksville (French Creek Landing near the Shell Station). Class times are 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
McMillan said although it is a form of exercise, yoga is more about the journey and the effects it has on your physiological and psychological body.
For more information about free yoga classes:
“It helps draw you inward to strengthen your own personal religion. I like to focus on helping people with chronic depression.”

february 1 story by BRENDA GOUGH
I
t’s time to face facts: we’re in the throes of winter. But there are some folks with green thumbs who are already busy thinking about and preparing for spring. Those preparations will bear fruit on February 1st when Qualicum Beach plays host to Seedy Saturday. This yearly event, which celebrates and promotes gardening in the area, is centred around a day of seed swapping and information sharing among community groups, gardeners and farmers.
This year’s event includes talks by Kathleen Millar, whose topic is called: The Elephant on your Dinner Table; why organic doesn't always mean nutritious and Arzeena Hamirm, who will discuss Genetically Engineered Organisms (GMO’s). Speaker Kathy Claxton’s topic is called: The Life & Times of the Tomato; from seed to seed saving.
While the heart of this event is the swapping and sale of seeds, there will also be plenty of other garden-related activities, including a Farmers’ Market, Milner Garden’s “Roots With Shoots” children's program, the Seedy Cafe, door prizes, a raffle and more.
Claxton has been a valued employee of Arrowsmith Greenhouses for 13 years. Successfully completing the Master Gardener Program at VIU has complimented her knowledge of sustainable organic gardening. She is particularly interested in speciality pruning and design consultation. Bringing neglected gardens back to life is a challenge she rises to. She’s also pretty good at growing tomatoes.
Over 70 vendors will present their services and garden products, and nurseries from across the region will also be well represented, with many specimens to choose from or to simply admire.
Claxton says that because so many people who live on Vancouver Island come from somewhere else, they need to consider our local growing season when choosing tomato varieties.
Expert speakers and master gardeners will also be on hand to discuss many aspects of gardening.
For example, beefsteak tomatoes don’t do well here. “What you grew in Alberta or Ontario is
different. You should look for a short season tomato. Beefsteaks take too long to ripen,” she explained. Claxton also suggests growing little tomatoes in pots or hanging baskets on a sunny patio. “There is no reason in the world why you can’t grow great tomatoes here…especially in hanging baskets. They are not as prone to blight because they are off the ground.” She said more and more people are saving their seeds. She pointed out that the GMO issue is one reason, but another is because saving seeds can help guarantee the flavour you will get in a tomato each year. “If you pick the best, it develops into a plant that has adapted to the area and will have the flavour and size you like.” The 12th annual Seedy Saturday event takes place on February 1st from 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre, located at 747 Jones Street in Qualicum Beach. Admission is by donation.
