A BIG thank you to Campbell River Community Foundation and all of the ‘Swing for Charity’ participants and sponsors for contributing to a greater Campbell River! The Campbell River Community Foundation’s annual ‘Swing for Charity’ golf tournament was another huge success in 2014, raising more funds to add to the permanent endowment fund that helps support nonprofits in our community. With the donations of time, funds and services that our sponsors provide we are able to make this event a fun day out for everyone involved. Having supporters like you makes Campbell River a better place. Thank you again to everyone. We will see you again next year! Please email info@swingforcharity.com for upcoming event info.

health Acceptance Leads to Positive Change
The ideas surrounding ‘acceptance’ are often confusing: Is acceptance passive - should we just sit back and wait for good times to come? Or does acceptance mean defeat? The reality is that acceptance is not passive or about defeat but rather it is an important step in the process of moving forward!
Acceptance does not mean that we won’t care about our struggles anymore - what it does mean is that we won’t spend every minute thinking about our struggles but, instead, we create room to think about solutions. When we are stuck in resistance, in wishing something wasn’t the way it is, we are paralyzed and unable to move forward.
Moving into a place of acceptance allows for the space we need to be able to take action to create different thoughts, feelings, and momentum for positive change. With acceptance also comes an inner calmness that allows for the opportunity to understand our emotional patterns; something that is essential to get ourselves ‘unstuck’. To your Success! CANADA DAY AT THE CAPE On July 1st, 2014, Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre will host Canada Day at the Cape, Quadra Island’s only Canada Day celebration. The event pairs many typical festival activities with tours of the Sacred Potlatch Collection and ancient petroglyphs, heritage walks to the landing site of Captain George Vancouver, Elder’s storytelling, an artisan marketplace, a variety of family programs, a community feast and the rededication of three historic welcome poles. The highlight for many attendees will be the arrival of the traditional Tribal Journey canoes who enter our territory on July 1st from Washington State en route to their final destination in Bella Bella. This group of more than 1,000 paddlers will be joined by Her Honour Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

History of the Tribal Journeys The Tribal Canoe Journey is a revival of the traditional method of transportation and is a significant cultural experience for all the participants. The canoe culture had all but disappeared until 1989 when the “Paddle to Seattle” was initiated during the 100th anniversary of Washington Statehood. That year, the state and local tribal governments signed the Centennial Accord recognizing tribal sovereignty. In celebration, coastal tribes organized the Paddle to Seattle to help revive their canoe culture. Each year, a different nation hosts other Indigenous nations coming from coastal communities. Participants learn traditional canoe carving and decorating, and learn to work together as a “canoe family”. All Tribal Journeys activities are family-friendly, drug- and alcohol-free. On arrival, the host tribe holds a Welcoming ceremony, with the canoe families asking permission to land. Cultural festivities, such as drumming and dancing, last for days.
Visit Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre and learn the rich cultural traditions of the Kwak’wala, Laich-Kwil-Tach and K’omoks peoples. View the historic Potlatch Collection, ancient petroglyphs and pre-contact galleries with more than 200 pieces on display!

V of the month
After dying in an accident, three friends go to Heaven for orientation. They are all asked the same question: “When you are in your casket, and friends and family are mourning you, what would you like to hear them say about you?” The first guy immediately responds, “I would like to hear them say that I was one of the great doctors of my time, and a great family man.” The second guy says, “I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in the children of tomorrow.” The last guy thinks a minute and replies, “I guess I’d like to hear them say... look, he’s moving!
Pet Trivia
1. It pays to be a lap dog. Three dogs (from First Class cabins!) survived the sinking of the Titanic – two Pomeranians and one Pekingese. 2. Chase that tail! Dogs chase their tails for a variety of reasons: curiosity, exercise, anxiety, predatory instinct or, they might have fleas! If your dog is chasing his tail excessively, talk with your vet.
