Kids Don’t Float

11

The Campbell River Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR), Station 54 have generously supplied and facilitated a “Kids Don't Float” flotation Loner Program at Discovery Marine Harbour on F Dock. The program was established in BC in 2003 to encourage water safety. Brian Ross Station Leader for Campbell River says, “Life Jackets should be worn the whole time, without exception while boating or in the water”. The program is easy to use, boaters and swimmers may take appropriate size lifejackets for children who are with them, free of charge. Upon completion of marine activity, boaters/swimmers return lifejackets to the display/storage board. 3 x Infant: 20-30 lbs. (9-14 kg) 3 x Child: 30-60 lbs. (14-27 kg) 3 x Youth: 60-90 lbs. (27-41 kg) The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue is a charity that saves lives on the water. We serve coastal and lake communities in British Columbia, providing year round rescue service and promoting boating safety for children and families. The RCMSAR are always in need of volunteers and donations, for more information go to www.rcmsar. com. Or you can make a donation today by seeing Brian Ross at Willow Point Wines, Willows Market Isl. River City

Arts Festival

Saturday July 25th 4th Annual River City Arts Festival, 10 am - 6 pm ...A vision of Kris Sand, owner of Impressions Gallery, who has the privileged job of spending his days with local talented artists and artisans. “Being able to highlight individual artists island wide on a stage like Shoppers Row, centred around Spirit Square and with a back drop such as Campbell Rivers is fantastic.” Every year the festival gets bigger, with artists coming from far and wide to participate, and keen art buyers to shop. The event builds on seven years of experience of public art exhibitions with over one hundred artists showcasing their works in 2014. Musical and Theatrical Buskers are invited to apply to play along Shoppers Row. Spirit Square will have live shows. There is an award ceremony at 4.30pm with over $500 in prize money is given to the top professional and amateur artists.

15-06 June 2015 CRiver WO.indd 33

For artists that wish to exhibit their work, Impressions Gallery is now taking registrations; Kris would like to emphasize that there are guidelines which you can view as well as applications to register at www. impressionsgallery.ca. Phone 250-286-1612.

Remarkably Smooth

After learning about all the benefits and effects that EVOO have on your body, your taste buds and your cooking, you would be forgiven if you thought it was going to come with a big price tag. Next to healthy, the best news is this 100% pure fresh organic oil is the same price as any grocery store Olive oil. At the tasting bar you can taste up to 50 infused and fused olive oils and dozens of Balsamic Vinegars, that have been ripened and barrel aged ranging from fruity to savoury. Once your start tasting these, I promise you will want them all.

What are they doing in there ?...It looks fancy.... it looks expensive.... are some of the things that you may be thinking when you first look at Signature Oil & Vinegar Tasting Bar in Tyee Plaza. It turns out that this 'new' Oil and Vinegar trend is based on thousands of years of history. The bottom line is organic fresh Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the highest in monounsaturated fat making it the healthiest of oils to choose from. Lisa Whitmore and Sigrid Lees, co-owners of the tastiest little bar in Campbell River, did their research and sampled plenty of Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOO) and vinegars themselves. Lisa says, "the first time I sampled authentic extra virgin olive oil in California I was pleasantly surprised at the taste, the difference was remarkable and so smooth.”

Along with dips, tapenades, pasta and gourmet snacks guaranteed to impress the biggest skeptic, you will be delighted with your new find. 7 EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL Benefits you didn't know: 1. It’s good for your sex life. 2. Weight loss secret weapon. A diet rich in extra virgin olive oil may deliver greater and longer lasting weight loss 3. Diabetes deterrent - Extra virgin olive oil can prevent the onset of diabetes by regulating our insulin levels. 4. Pain Relief - Anti-inflammatory properties. 5. Skin saviour - helps anti-ageing, osteoporosis and skin damage. 6. Mental agility - Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fat, which helps prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s. 7. It strengthens your immune system, with important antioxidants that aren't found in other oils.

V of the month

A man hasn’t been feeling well, so he goes to his doctor for a complete checkup. Afterward, the doctor comes out with the results. “I’m afraid I have some very bad news,” the doctor says. “You’re dying, and you don’t have much time left.” “Oh, that’s terrible!” says the man. “How long have I got?” “Ten,” the doctor says sadly. “Ten?” the man asks. “Ten what? Months? Weeks? What?!” “Nine...”

Balance Equestrian Do you or someone you know love horses and have an interest in riding or owning a horse? Horses teach us invaluable life skills such as perseverance and dedication. Kids who are involved with horses and horse care are usually happier to hang out at the barn rather than at the local kids hang-out where they may be influenced by negative people. Instead, equestrians are exposed to positive role models that mentor them in work ethic and responsibility. Riding is only a small part of time that you or your kids may spend at the barn. The riding time of a lesson may be only an hour, then there is the 30-45 min of preparation and then the same at the end, which is all included in the experience of learning about horses. There is the grooming, feeding, shovelling, and day to day responsibility of caring for another creature. What are the day to day details involved with keeping such a large animal happy, healthy and a pleasure to ride?

Equipment for horses can vary depending on the discipline that the rider wants to peruse. Saddles are like shoes and need to fit both the horse and rider. If the saddle does not fit them they are more likely to want to get rid of the saddle regardless if the rider is in it. A good saddle can range from $500 - $5,000. Bridles, blankets, boots and any number of other pieces of equipment that are required. Well managed and cared for horses are usually healthy and don’t require a huge amount of veterinary care. Though, like other pets, there are routine vaccinations and worming, yearly check-ups and dental care. Having suitable supervision or training is important when owning or riding a horse. Staying safe, having fun and keeping your horse or pony healthy are the most important things. If you or someone you know is interested in learning to ride or learning the complexities of horse care, please feel free to stop by Balance Equestrian Center located on Walworth just off Willis Road.

Many horses can thrive in a field for a few summer months just eating grass, but on average a horse needs about 2 acres of good quality pasture to maintain a healthy weight. In the winter months their diet needs to be supplemented with grain and hay to keep them healthy and happy.
