he exclaimed and added, “I want to do anything I can to help raise funds for the ALS Society.” The ALS Society supports research towards treatments and a cure and it provides support and services for quality care for people with ALS/PLS and their families. Chantler said when you are confronted with the news that you have a motor neuron disease such as ALS or PLS, the clinic in Vancouver very quickly suggests that you join the ALS Society. Across Canada the society offers a multitude of services from equipment loans to transportation and lodging for medical appointments to counselling for patients and their families. All of the services are free and money to provide them is raised independent of government. “I personally have benefited from the equipment loan program with the loan (for as long as I need them) of a bed rail, a bath bench, a transfer belt, numerous walkers (I've actually worn a few out), a lift chair, and now a power wheelchair,”

PQBWhatsOn-Jun15-p-0 .indd 15

Chantler pointed out. He said he and his wife will also use the counselling services offered by professionals trained in the nuances of the disease. “It doesn't take much to realize the tremendous financial assistance all of this is, in addition to the emotional uplift of knowing that there is help and we are not alone in this fight.” The Mid Island Walk for ALS is in Parksville on Sunday, June 7 at the square behind city hall with registration at 11 a.m. and the walk starting at noon. If you would like to help Chantler meet his fundraising goal visit www.walkforals.ca and follow the links. MORE INFORMATION

LITTLE MOUNTAIN

Little Mountain's lookout provides a South facing panorama overlooking Errington, with many local peaks forming a jagged horizon. While the moderately easy trails to the top are popular with hikers, horse riders, runners and dog walkers, those who want to enjoy the view without the effort can drive to the top of the hill and drink in the scenery just a few metres from where they've parked.

June weather on Vancouver Island is unpredictable, but that's no reason to avoid heading outdoors. Between Nanoose and Deep Bay and inland to the summit of Arrowsmith, there are options for hiking, biking, paddling or just enjoying the easily accessed beauty of Parksville and Qualicum Beach. While Horne Lake, Cathedral Grove and Parksville Beach get plenty of well earned attention, here are 5 less well known gems to discover without going far afield. All trails are described on the “Hikes and Bike Trails” section of www.outsideradventures.com

1

ROSEWALL CREEK

This fairly flat riverside route starts just North of Cook Creek Road. This established trail winds upstream through the trees, past marshes and across gravel bars which submerge during wetter months. The trees and water provide a cool, shaded environment with ample opportunity to refresh on hot days and a rich, verdant atmosphere with a sheltering canopy when it rains.

3

NANOOSE HILL

Also known as “The Notch”, this is the hill across Nanoose Bay as you drive to and from Nanaimo. Climbing just a few dozen metres, it's always surprising to experience plants and topography that are rarely seen so close to civilization. The short, but steep trail network allows approach from a number of sides so there are options to explore, rather than making a beeline for the top.

4

QUALICUM BEACH

While Parksville's sandy expanse and nearby playpark attract many families, Qualicum Beach offers amenities and attractions close to the water and with an attractive, alternative view of the Salish Sea. Along with cafes' bars, restaurants and accommodation in easy reach, kayak and paddleboard rentals let families, tourists or experienced paddlers set off from this sheltered bay for an hour on the water or a day long adventure.

5

HAMMERFEST BIKE TRAILS

Located near Englishman River Falls on the North Eastern flank of the Arrowsmith Massif, these trails hosted some of Vancouver Island's earliest mountain bike races. The gradient and technical features favour more experienced riders, but are equally enjoyable on either lightweight cross country bikes or longer travel freeride bikes.

n up 'n coming new country band featuring acclaimed singer songwriter Paul Laine will be the headliner for a Vancouver Island concert series that starts in Qualicum Beach June 19. North of Nashville is bringing the best of country, roots, folk, bluegrass, and Americana to the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre with DarkHorse as the headliner. Fuelled by the writing and singing of home grown musician Paul Laine the band which formed in 2012 defines the term New Country and is already drawing national attention. This is not the first go-round in the musical arena for Laine who

developed his musical chops at Kwalikum Secondary School. “I grew up in Qualicum and got signed when I was 19. I started playing trumpet when I was 11 and Bill Cave who was my music teacher recognized my talent. He said he was going to put me in the high school band even though I was only 11. He said I had to play another instrument because I don’t know what to do with you, so he said play bass. I said ok but I really didn’t want to because I had no concept of rock and roll because I wasn’t allowed rock music at my house,” explained Laine. He said as a kid he always knew what he wanted to do and his friend and neighbour Phil Dwyer was a huge influence. “I got lucky because I grew up next to Mozart that’s what I call Phil. I met him when I was five and he was my first giant musical influence because he was the only kid to play with in the neighbourhood and he was a year older than me but he was unbelievable. He was crazy good. At six years old he would come over and play the entertainer and I watched him so that is how I got my start.” Laine left school when he was 15 and started playing his bass in rock bands. He began his professional career as a solo artist then was the singer of Danger Danger, a rock band out of New York. He toured America and Europe for 12 years and made five records with the band. He then decided it was time to grow up and approach a different side of the music and started a recording studio. “I moved to Vancouver and started writing commercials and doing TV spots. I thought I would give it a shot and I did that for seven years and I hated it,” he admitted. He said eventually the industry pulled him back but this time his country roots

PQBWhatsOn-Jun15-p-0 .indd 23

emerged. He started writing for B.C. based country songstress Stacey McKitrick when he realized he had a real love for that kind of music. “I kept writing songs that seemed like they were for me. I had four of five of these songs put aside and I had to find an artist for them and one day a friend of mine said why don’t you just do this? So I thought o.k. I started writing more and eventually I had an album.” The album called Let It Ride was released in April last year and DarkHorse has been thrilling audiences with country-rock style of music ever since. Laine said when DarkHorse opened for Canadian country music artist Chad Brownlee April 2 at Arbutus Meadows it was a thrill to perform for more than 1500 people. “It was a wonderful show. It meant a lot for me to come home because I had not played here in 25 years and people went nuts.” He is hoping the home town crowd at the Civic Centre in Qualicum Beach will be just as enthusiastic when they play June 19. Haley Sales who also spent some time growing up in these parts will be opening the show. David James and BIG RIVER Canada's most acclaimed Johnny Cash tribute band will also be performing. We have also acquired risers, ovens and new sound equipment. It is a lovely classic and I think it will be extremely popular because it is a delightful story.” Brown will also be performing in The 39 Steps along with Rob Atkinson, Dan Osleeb and Kari Larsen. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre. Only 4 actors portray dozens of characters, requiring lightning fast quickchanges and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. Thus the film's "serious" spy story is played entirely for laughs. “Gary Brown and Rob Atkinson are

PQBWhatsOn-Jun15-p-0 .indd 39

the two who do most of the changes and I think they will have an enormous resonance with the audience,” Butts acknowledged and added. “It is a funny who-done-it with a femme fatal and a spy and secret plans that are going to be stolen by the enemy and a false accusation of murder. I has just about every cliché in the bunch it is absolutely marvellous.” Once again Hilary Whelton will be directing some talented young performers in the teen musical Disney’s Aladdin. The musical adventure about a street rat who became a prince is filled with magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides. For details on the entire 2015 line up visit: www.b2btheatre.com. MORE INFORMATION

Joke of the Month A man hasn’t been feeling well, so he goes to his doctor for a complete checkup. Afterward, the doctor comes out with the results. “I’m afraid I have some very bad news,” the doctor says. “You’re dying, and you don’t have much time left.” “Oh, that’s terrible!” says the man. “How long have I got?” “Ten,” the doctor says sadly. “Ten?” the man asks. “Ten what? Months? Weeks? What?!” “Nine...”
