5th annual

Old House Village Hotel & Spa

March 9 2014 This year, expect to see brides and grooms take a dramatic step back from the diamond dripping dresses and decor; couples are simplifying their celebrations and looking outdoors for a woodland inspired rustic feel. Blending hard and soft textures, and bringing both the indoors outdoors, and the outdoors indoors, in an effort to get back to basics with nature. For local couples planning their nuptials, this presents endless opportunity for inspiration! Vancouver Island has a wealth of settings perfect for a rustic, woody wedding. Increasing in popularity is the ‘unplugged wedding’. As individuals increasingly find it more difficult to switch off and step away from smart phones, couples are now nicely asking guests to ditch the electronic devices completely. Previously a polite sign at the ceremony or reception was enough to encourage guests to kick the habit, but today it seems technology is as essential as breathing – leading couples to remind guests on their wedding invite that they are invited to attend a wedding where devices will be ‘checked’, much like a coat at the theatre.

Colour Craze

G

This year brings a softer change with pale pink, soft blues and whimsical iridescent lavenders. Pastel colours are coming back into favour with brides for spring and summer weddings. The contrast of pastel colours and rustic wood textures certainly makes for a fairytale wedding! Soft and warm shades of brown, such as sand and fawn, are also growing in popularity for men’s wear, and will be used as accent colours throughout. While metallics are still a popular choice this year, many brides are forgoing traditional silver and gold in favour of bronzes or brown tones, and using touches of these everywhere, from invitations to decor.

FREE MAKE-UP LESSONS

G

Eye makeup has become a more simple and elegant affair. The heavy and dark eyeshadows of 2013 are no longer in favour, with the Bridget Bardot inspired cat’s eye liner making a comeback. Sofia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Bardot all pioneered the now-classic look throughout their careers, and for the bride wanting that film reel feel, this compliments all eye shapes perfectly. For lips pretty, corals to a soft neutral beige. Simple, elegant, and natural.

More relaxed updo’s – easy to maintain, stylish and individual. The braid is making a comeback dramatically, with lots of volume, body and loose tendrils. Easy to manage, versatile braided crowns are also making a solid fashionable impact at weddings.

Rings

G

Ring It In! With colour making a big impact on weddings in 2014, it is natural to expect some colour in wedding jewellery! Both yellow gold and rose gold are taking favour over traditional gold and white gold, and while the conventional diamond never loses it sparkle, this year the black diamond is stealing the spotlight, particularly with men. Platinum is the go-to metal for men’s rings, as it is durable and hardworking, just like the man wearing it! Two-tiered halo settings, some using contrasting color in the surrounding stones or metal. More visually interesting than an expected, the round stone, the oval cut tweaks convention just enough to be modern, but looks perfectly stunning set as a solitaire, especially when used in a trendy east-west engagement ring setting. Classically elegant, an emerald-cut stone lends an engagement ring a subtle vintage air.

Men

~ Tungsten, Gold, Silver, Platinum, Titanium, Wood... and Patterned. Mixed metals are all the rage, its a combination of comfort, durability and a unique look that belongs to him. Although the Classic Gold is still very popular, because more men today are wearing their wedding rings all day every day rather than occasional jewelery, comfort and durability have become important elements.

MEN

G

Slim line suits are still popular with men, and seems unlikely to change in the near future. Men are also utilizing accessories more, with many grooms leaning on pocket watches, cufflinks, tie-bars, arm bands and braces to finish their look.

Bridal Gowns

G

Brides of 2014, prepare yourselves to be prettied! Bridal gowns throughout the year are going to be influenced by floral appliqués of all shapes and sizes – try something unique and take an appliqué from one shoulder down and around the waist, all the way to the train! Big is better, as all brides know, and voluminous dresses are shaping up to be the ‘biggest’ thing year – there are layers of tulle, loads of texture, and lots of shape in this year’s bridal gowns.

Flowers

G

With the indoor/outdoor woodlands wedding gaining popularity this year, creating balance and flow with hard and soft feels and textures is essential. Bigger, brighter, large bouquets will feature heavily throughout spring and summer, and the cooler months will bring blues, violets and purples, again in large bouquets. The peony rose is a favourite this year, with it’s sweet, heady, romantic scent, and both pastel and bright colour options are perfect for the warmer months.

Wedding menus again will be heavily influenced by local produce and seasonal availability, with the desire to eat locally and sustainably increasing in importance for many individuals. Brides and grooms are reintroducing the sit-down meal with great success, meaning no more buffet dinners. Instead, family-style dining is big this year – food piled high in plates on the table, and individuals serving themselves. Making the formal dinner a much more social affair than buffet-style meals, allowing guests to eat and chat while passing great food around the table.

CAKE

G

While many traditional wedding staples are back in 2014, the traditional wedding cake is not one of them! The round shape may be a throwback to past tradition, the colours and textures are certainly creating new excitement for brides, grooms and guests. Hand-painted wedding cakes, like hand-made invitations, provide a couple with a creative outlet for their love, and have become a must-see at many celebrations. Ombre style in wedding cakes is still relatively new and has gained a following this year too!

In homage to the more traditional wedding, brides this year will avoid the ‘trash the dress’ sessions in favour of formal portraiture. Formal bridal party portraits and family portraits have made a comeback, with many couples looking for a more serious edge in their wedding photography. In many portraits this year, couples are even opting to go without the smile! Think of the old school, sepia toned photographs of your great grandparents!

With artistic inspiration so readily available to brides and grooms on websites such as Pinterest, traditional plain wedding invitations are definitely out! Custom wedding stationery is big this year, with couples looking to personalize their invites using illustrated art or hand-made stamps. Unusual papers, textures and finishes are also very popular at the moment, with metallic bronzes and browns appearing on many invites.

The bubbles are back! Prosecco has been a popular choice for celebrations in recent years, with champagne taking the flat backseat. But this year, bubbles are back in a big way! Throughout spring and summer, champagne cocktails are a light, breezy alternative to hard liquor, with signature champagne cocktails a popular choice at many weddings. Mixology (the art of mixing drinks) has become incredibly popular, and many couples are choosing to create and serve ‘his and hers’ cocktails which reflect their personalities. With the new liquor laws on custom made wines changing, we will see more wines made from local fruit appearing on the tables with custom made labels.

health Stress Management Coaching What specifically is Stress Management coaching? How is it different from Life Coaching? Stress Management Coaching differs from general Life Coaching only in such that it applies focused and specific tools toward managing the given stresses in your daily life. On a daily basis, we are presented with a number of stresses and it can often feel as though we don’t always have the support or resources we need to cope effectively with these stresses. If we experience stress overload, we can find ourselves thinking and behaving in ways that are often not helpful for us. We have the ability and the emotional competence to engage in practices that encourage our sense of self-worth.Discovering

the unlimited measure of our inner worth and how to manifest it in our lives provides for an exciting journey of inspiration and motivation. It is sometimes not easy to make the changes that would help to manage our stress and that are necessary to improve our lives, but when we find the strength to do so it will enhance every aspect of our lives. Stress management coaching can help you find that inner strength and enable you to develop strategies and provide you with tools and new perspectives to manage your stress. To Your Success!

Mr

The grocer walked over and, trying to be friendly, asked the boy if he had a lot of laundry to do. “Oh, no laundry,” the boy said. “I’m going to wash my dog.” “But you shouldn’t use this to wash your dog. It’s very powerful and if you wash your dog in this, he’ll get sick. In fact, it might even kill him.” But the boy was not stopped by this and carried the detergent to the counter and paid for it, even as the grocer still tried to talk him out of washing his dog. About a week later the boy was back in the store shopping. The grocer asked the boy how his dog was doing. “Oh, he died,” the boy said. The grocer said, “I tried to tell you not to use that detergent on your dog.” “Well,” the boy replied, “I don’t think it was the detergent that killed him.” “Oh I’m sorry. How did he die?” “I think it was the WhatsOnDigest spin cycle.”
