“Make it Happenâ€? International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It has been observed since the 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence with the rise of radical ideologies. Today the tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, with recognition. The new millennium has witnessed a signiďŹ cant change and attitude shift toward equality and liberty. Many of the younger generation feel that all the battles have been won for women, but the complexity of patriarchy still exist. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increase in impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. However, there is still much ground to gain, in business, politics, resource management and trades. Great improvements have been made especially in Canada with female astronauts and governing ministers. Women now have real choices. They can work and have a family, so the tones and nature of International Women's Day has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Pieces: Celebrating Textiles
Calling All Textile Enthusiasts, Artisans and Makers...
March 27, 28, 29, 2015 Pieces: Celebrating Textiles showcases contemporary thinking on “slow” textiles and clothing March 27th – 29th, at the Florence Filberg Centre. Explore the relationships between local history, cloth making, natural materials, stitch narratives, global textiles and what is in your closet. Mingle with and celebrate the vast talents of makers and artisans from Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. The gala opening features the acclaimed Charllotte Kwon from Maiwa speaking on “Slow Clothes.” Saturday opens with an odyssey of Coast Salish and other First Nation’s textile history. A variety of displays, demonstrations and surprises follow. Later, Kwon joins the Global Conversation with insights from African, South Asian and Latin American inspired social enterprises. Provocative installations created by North Island College students reveal the underbelly of mass produced fast fashion issues. On Sunday, author Leanne Prain, born and raised in the Comox Valley speaks on stitching cloth and making meaning. Prain believes, “that weaving a tale or dropping
a thread can take on new meaning when we start to see textiles … as an important part of the human experience.” Our Social Fabric and students from Vancouver Island University offer insights into the world of up-cycling, thrifting and repurposing. Displays and opportunities to chat and learn from the makers are part of this “piece”. Finally “Endnotes” touches on the textile windings of shrouds, material memorials and green burial. The Public is invited to join in to pick up some needle skills at the Eat, Make, Mend Café and browse through the vendor area in the downstairs areas of the Filberg Center. Two Children’s workshops are being offered at the Courtenay Museum. A few downtown merchants will be offering displays and demonstrations. Learn all about it from the website at www.piecescelebratingtextiles.com. Weekend tickets are on sale at Uptown Yarns in Courtenay, The Village Yarn Shoppe in Comox and on the website. Presented by Comox Valley Photographic Society For the past four years, the Comox Valley Photographic Society (formerly CV Camera Club) has been holding an annual celebration of photography and photographic arts at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay. The evening event includes a two-part program of musical slideshows created by members of the club to showcase their work, including still images and video work. In addition, a print gallery is set up in the lower lobby of the theatre where guests can view framed photographs before, during and after the show.
The event has been hugely popular and offers the club the opportunity to reach out to the community and share the love of photography with non-members in an intimate and dynamic way. Imagefest 2015 will be held on Saturday, March 21st, 2015 at 7:30pm at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay. Tickets to the show are a bargain at just $15. Sepak Takraw How to get your kick on, for free!
Every week in Courtenay a strange game is taking place called Sepak Takraw. You have probably never heard of it, but it's actually a great sport for beginners. Sepak means Kick and Takraw means Ball; and could simply be described as kick volleyball. It blends volleyball, soccer and hackysack into one sport with lots of action. It has been played for many many years in South East Asia, where it has the popularity that hockey does in Canada. When the pros play they're doing backflips to spike the ball over the badminton height net. Here in the Valley you won't see any backflips but more of a focus on having fun. All ages are welcome as we currently have players ranging from 20-60 and it's a completely gender equal sport. Women may
even have a leg up, as flexible legs are a bonus. Soccer players may appreciate how much action they will get as Sepak Takraw is played with 3 players aside, and each team gets 3 hits to get the ball back over the net. Sepak Takraw is here in Courtenay, inside Puntledge Park Elementary school Wednesday nights from 8-10pm. The action never stops all year as once the weather is nice enough the group takes to the outdoor court. Throughout the year, you get a chance to play with lots of players of different skill levels which keeps the game fresh fun and it can be competitive! If you're looking to get your kick on, meet some new friends and learn a new sport come on out. There's no charge and spectators are welcome as well! Pet Corner IMPORTANT CAT FACTS Moving your Cat to a New Home Put out your moving boxes a couple weeks before you need to start packing so your cat has time to get used to their presence. Try to keep your cat’s daily routine as stable as possible. Stick closely to his regular schedule for feeding, play and attention. If your cat is very skittish, nervous or easily stressed, speak to your vet about using anti-anxiety medication. Get your Cat use to a carrier, place food near the entry a make a comfy bed in side.
What to Do If Your Cat Keeps You Awake at Night To prevent your cat from disturbing you while you sleep, try the following suggestions: Schedule a few interactive play sessions with your cat during the evening. Try using toys that can mimic the movement of mice and birds, such as toys that dangle and wiggle. Games with ping-pong balls, soft balls and furry mice toys are great for cats who like to fetch. Play until your cat seems tired. Feed your cat a main meal just before your bedtime. If your cat continues to wake you during the night for food, purchase a timed feeder that you can fill and set to dispense once or twice during the night. If your cat’s hungry, he’ll learn to wait by the feeder
rather than bother you while you’re sleeping. Incorporate a variety of enrichment activities to keep your cat busy during daylight hours.
