Art Warz A live painting competition that features the Centre's first ever artist throw-down
Story by Brenda Gough
T
he Parksville Community Centre (PCC) will be a battle zone on Friday, March 6 with a live painting competition that features the Centre's first ever artist throwdown. Art Warz will pit five artists against each other and audience members will not only watch as canvasses go from blank to beautiful, they also get to vote for the winner. Jenny Hughes who operates the Oceanside Art Studio is organizing the event. Hughes studied fine art at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary and spends a lot of her time teaching painting at her Qualicum Beach studio. She said she participated in an art battle in Vancouver seven years ago called Battle of the Brush and that experience inspired her to immerse herself in painting. “It sparked the inner artist in me. I was working as a graphic designer in Vancouver and it inspired me. For me it was exploring a whole new world because I had never painted live and it puts pressure on you,” she acknowledged. For some artists, a classroom setting is as social as it gets. Painting a masterpiece with painstaking detail is usually a lonely, solitary pursuit and Hughes admitted that painting in front of an enthusiastic crowd is a fun way to step out of your comfort zone. “A lot of artists are used to painting solo. I love the social aspect of it. I don’t like to
paint in solitude.” Hughes agreed that when you bring in an audience; play live music and add a splash of alcohol you have a painting party like no other. She pointed out that it is also a great way to highlight some of the regions amazing local artists and she hopes to turn Art Warz into a monthly easel sporting event at the PCC. “It is a really cool event. There are not enough events here especially in the winter. ” Hughes chose West Coast Landscape as the inaugural theme stating; “from four and a half years of teaching in this area I know it is popular.” Attendees will watch paintings unfold stroke by stroke and then vote for their favourite. At the end of the night people can bid on the rapid-fire masterpieces and get to take home an original piece of artwork. With live music, door prizes, a cash bar and food trucks the 19 plus crowd can expect an inspiring night of creation and community from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Admission is $13 for PCC members and $15 for non-members. Call the PCC at: 250-248-6234 for more information.

Oceanside Health & Wellness Fair Bringing top notch health professionals and exhibitors to Oceanside. Story by Brenda Gough
T
he spring equinox begins on March 19 this year but if the winter blues are still getting you down chances are good that you will find some solutions to lift your spirits at the Oceanside Health and Wellness Fair Saturday, March 21. The fair presented by the Oceanside Healthy Living Association is being held at the Parksville Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parksville Pharmasave’s Natural Health Consultant Lisa Leger who is a member of the organizing team behind the free community event said every year the fair is stocked with exhibitors and presenters who are passionate about health and wellness. 2020 marks the 25th year for the event that has been bringing top notch health professionals and exhibitors to Oceanside to share what they know about living well. Attendees have an opportunity to listen and ask questions from a wide range of speakers in a number of break-out sessions. In between sessions they can browse through exhibitor booths and learn about new health products. Leger said they are lucky to have so many health professionals and exhibitors under one roof to share what they know about living well.
Holistic wellness practitioner Cindy Walker is one of the many presenters who have been invited to participate. Walker who operates D-Stress Fitness with her daughter Stephanie wears many hats. She is a certified fitness/yoga instructor, instructor trainer, nutritional/supplement consultant and massage/energy practitioner and has been in the wellness industry for more than 30 years. The dynamic duo has been sharing their passion of mindful fitness in the Oceanside community since April 2019 through retreats and wellness pop-ups. Maintaining wellness can be challenging, especially with the personal and professional demands people face everyday. Walker explained that being mobile allows them to bring their wellness one-stop programs into the workplace, a boardroom or to an employee retreat. “We had an opportunity to set up a studio, but we thought we needed to be where people are at. We go into the community … into their environment. It is about educating and empowering individuals with practical and holistic wellness tips and techniques and tools,” she said. She pointed out that mindful fitness can include simple things like pausing to do some relaxing breathing techniques or going for a
17
short walk because many people are so busy that they have forgotten how important self care is. She said implementing stress busters like brain gym, yoga and Tai chi into your day can release tension in the body and mind, reducing brain fog so you can stay focused and productive. Walker will be facilitating an interactive seminar that will be supportive for people of all ages and will include methods to reduce body fatigue and brain fog throughout the day. The Oceanside Health and Wellness Fair is about community coming together in the name of wellness and as always there will be a food concession and great door prizes to be won. Weddings of the Century Curated by Merlyn Patten and features 100 years of fashion.
Story by Brenda Gough
rom billowy floor length ball gowns to strapless formfitting mermaids, the wedding dress has undergone many transformations over the last century and Qualicum Beach's first lady of vintage clothing has a show this month celebrating them all. Weddings of the Century is being curated by Merlyn Patten and features 100 years of fashion. The fundraiser for YoungLife which includes afternoon tea is being held Saturday, March 28 from 2-4 p.m. at St. Stephen’s United Church in Qualicum Beach. A perfect event for the start of the bridal season the fashion show will feature models of all ages and sizes wearing bridal outfits from floor length to short featuring beautiful fabrics. Patten’s collection of nearly 100 wedding dresses includes a range of styles from romantic Victorian era gowns with dramatic froths of delicate lace to the simpler silhouettes of the 1960s and old fashion hippie gowns of the 70s. From translucent charmeuse, sensual satins and silks the one-of-a-kind dresses are sure to thrill guests and evoke feelings of nostalgia and memories of their own special day or
F
that of family and friends. “Now probably every woman has bought a new dress for a wedding or special occasion. I know I have, and then not worn it again very often. So we would like to invite you to share in one of the most special days in a young woman's life by attending our event, wearing all your own finery,” Patten emphasized. She added, “We encourage the audience to take part. Everybody who has been to my fashion shows knows that we get some wonderful creations and we have a prize for the best hat.” Patten who has been planning this bridal show for two years said it will feature the entire wedding party and she admitted that a fashion show featuring bridal wear is not an event to take lightly. “Of course all of the gowns have to be pressed and ironed before the event, but wedding dresses can be a real challenge,” she acknowledged. There are many volunteers behind the scenes who have spent hours steaming and ironing while Patten has spent months sorting through boxes of veils, hats and head pieces to match each dress with the appropriate embellishments. One vintage dress will not be requiring the perfect bra or crinoline because it will be on
a mannequin rather than a live model and Patten explained that the museum piece is too fragile to wear. “It is a 1900 wedding dress and it is so tiny. I acquired it 30 years ago. It has a mono bosom and is made of rouched silk and it is so beautiful but silk tends to shatter,” she indicated. Patten’s Qualicum Beach home is full of racks of classic clothes, hats and shoes made with superior fabrics and embellishments emblematic of the era they came from. Over the years she has shared her treasures with the community and her fashion shows have generated more than $10,000 for YoungLife in Qualicum Beach which offers lunch time and after-school social inclusion programs for middle and high school students in District 69. Young Life Canada also owns and operates Rockridge Canyon and every year thousands of students participate in a wide range of activities at the camp site.

Seeing a homeless guy begging on the street, a woman took pity on him and gave him a handful of change. “Thank you,” said the homeless man. “Your generosity is much appreciated. You know my life used to be great, but just look at the state of me now.” “How do you mean?” asked the woman. “Well,” he explained. “I was a multimillionaire. I had bank accounts all over the world with hundreds of thousands of dollars deposited in each.” “So where did it all go wrong?” she asked. The homeless man sighed, “I forgot my m ot h er’s maiden name.”
