20th Annual

Rod Brind’Amour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic 20th Annual Rod Brind’Amour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction.

Saturday, June 13th Storey Creek Golf Course In it’s 20th year, the Rod Brind’Amour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction is the biggest Cystic Fibrosis Canada fund raiser of the year on northern Vancouver Island. Significant funds are raised from sponsorship and the auction, as well as from the golf and dinners. The auctioneer is Jason Fitzgerald from CR Auctions. This year’s amazing platinum sponsors include Thrifty Foods, Steve Marshall Ford, RBC Dominion Securities, Seymour Pacific Developments, The Kinsman, Safety Net Security, Ed Rosse Plumbing and Heating, and the Campbell River Mirror. One of the major sponsors, Thrifty Foods, has been a long time supporter of the Rod Brind’Amour CF Golf Classic and Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Thrifty Foods founder Alex Campbell was instrumental in ensuring their support. The stores in Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay and Parksville will be hosting their own fund raiser in the month of May (CF Awareness Month) to help raise funds for the event. The popular Storey Creek Golf Course provide a magnificent venue, donating golf and equipment for tournament prizes. Storey Creek’s Manager, Kyle Stout, will tee off #17 hole with Rod Brind’Amour, and NHL player Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers. Over the years, local businesses and the Campbell River community have donated generously and shown unceasing support for the Cystic Fibrosis cause – last year’s Golf Classic raised $84,000! The Classic Golf Dinner is catered by Quay West Restaurant at Sportsplex, and everyone is invited to attend. A great evening will be had, and there will be an opportunity to meet NHL Edmonton Oilers player Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the Assistant coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, and tournament host Rod Brind’Amour. The M.C. is Bruce Williams. To attend the Golf Dinner, tickets are available for $45 each. To purchase or donate, please contact Bev 250-287-8600. health Essential Oils for Well-Being 18

WhatsOn

Aromatherapy is a gentle and yet powerful healing art that uses therapeutic grade, pure essential oils in a variety of applications that can positively affect our well-being. Essential oils, the "immune system" of plants, are liquids that are derived from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, and roots of a plant. They contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from, and are highly concentrated - only very small amounts are needed and, depending on the oil used, often as little as two or three drops suffice. Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils! Essential oils are derived from the true plants, as opposed to perfume oils that are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. Essential oils can be helpful to ease ailments such as colds and flu, headaches, insomnia, tension and stress, muscular aches...etc....

Elk Falls Suspension Bridge Opening May 9 The Elk Falls suspension bridge project that began five years ago, along with an all-access viewing platform, has reached its glorious completion. The official opening is set for May 9th at 10 am where Campbell River Rotary, dignitaries and residents will celebrate the newest attraction to Campbell River’s already world class arena. Championed by The Rotary Club of Campbell River and the vision of Rotarian Lorrie David Bewza, this project’s success was due to the hard work and entrusted support of hundreds of specialists and tradesmen, the financial support of Campbell River businesses, BC Parks, BC Hydro, and the Island Coastal Economic Trust in bringing this magnificent project to the beautiful park-lands of Campbell River. With an estimated cash value of over $2 million, the bridge will generate between $2.5 million and $5 million annually for the local economy. The suspension bridge is 80 metres long and hangs

65 metres above the Campbell River canyon floor offering a top to bottom view of Elk Falls. It is capable of holding up to 120,000 pounds and gives you incredible views of Elk Falls and the headwaters of the world famous Campbell River. The bridge is bridled with two viewing platforms and a very impressive cantilevered platform that greets every visitor with a thrilling extension over the falls. Fencing and expansion of the existing trail system gives safe and direct access to the falls. There are two main access parking lots to the trail. The new large upper parking lot that houses the John Hart Interpretive Centre directly off the Gold River Highway (Hwy 28), from here the walk to the falls is 1.4 kms. For closer access the lower existing parking lot is just a 200 yard walk. Congratulations to all those that contributed, and to the ongoing vision and drive of Rotarians Written by Cathy Kaardal.

It is the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere, two cars both slightly cross over the white line in the centre of the road. They collide and a fair amount of damage is done, miraculously neither driver is hurt. They both get out. One is a doctor, one is a lawyer. The lawyer calls the police on his cell phone and they say they will be there within 20 minutes. It’s cold and damp, and both men are shaken up. The lawyer offers the doctor a drink of brandy from his hip flask, the doctor accepts, drinks and hands it back to the lawyer, who then puts it away. “Aren’t you going to have a drink?” the doctor says. “AFTER the police get here.” replies the lawyer

Pets & Equestrian Why Horses? It's a cold, wet west coast morning. Why would a teenage girl be up, eager to get out of the house? Because the horses are waiting for her! They are ready for their breakfast, then it’s time to muck paddocks and then, best of all - a riding lesson. Being involved with horses is hard and fulfilling work, both on and off the horse. Riding is a delicate combination of strength, balance and co-ordination. It requires one to be calm while communicating with a very sensitive animal. In no other sport can you witness the impressive partnership between a small child (or adult) and a 1000 lb + animal. Confidence and self-esteem building come naturally with horses. The horse doesn't care what you look like, what you wear or what newest electronic device you have. Rather, the relationship with a horse is built on consistent loving care and compassion, both on his back and in his paddock. Horse people also learn quickly how to control their emotions, as horse have the keen ability to pick up on them. A rider can't be distracted by daily worries or a phone beeping. A rider must be fully present and in the moment to be successful in the saddle. A worthy challenge for all ages in our fast paced world!

work experience. This work is not easy. Horses eat a lot - and you know what that means at the other end! Horses also require feeding four times a day, 30-50 litres of water per day and exercise. But this hard work pays off: Our helpers build a strong sense of responsibility and confidence- two very important character traits for young people. We want this environment to be as accessible as possible for all ages and abilities - riders can pony ride almost as soon as they can walk, and lessons start as young as age four. We have kind, knowledgeable school horses for all levels of riders. We also have STARS, Strathcona Therapeutic Riding Society, which offers the joy of riding and farm life to individuals with physical and cognitive challenges. Everyday at BEC we have the pleasure of seeing kids conquer challenges in the riding ring, engage happily in work, and experience farm life and unstructured play. It’s not uncommon at the end of the day to find a young lady quietly sitting with a horse in a paddock while another is in the ring training a goat to jump! Want to learn more? Find us on Face Book, or check out our website www.BalanceEquestrian. ca or come on by!

We at Balance Equestrian Centre strive to create all-round horsepeople, not just riders. We offer a "helper program," where young people can earn credit toward lessons as well as gain valuable
