CRIMSON COAST DANCE SOCIETY presents a

MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE & DANCE EVENING Crimson Coast Dance Society offers two original performance works May 11 at Malaspina Theatre at VIU , both promising to surprise and amaze with their originality and raw reality. Martha Carter’s widely reviewed and brutally honest “TWiSTED:SOLO” is featured and local VIU Faculty opens the show with a new work “Meridian”. “Meridian” is an artistic phenomenon that blends the creative passions, technical and performance skills, and innovative minds of four Vancouver Island artists into an experimental immersive experience. The fluid abstract imagery of Kevin Mazutinec’s digitally generated organic projections provide a seductive visual score to which Robin Davies, through the use of customized software instruments and live performance, composes a lush ambient soundscape. Marian van der Zon adds further dimension to the work with an improvised performance featuring the use of acoustic instruments, as well as elaborately layered vocals, orchestrated through the use of loop pedals. The final element is the spoken word poetry of Justin McGrail which offers the audience the fa-

miliar structure of language, yet challenges them to keep up as “the words dip, soar, dive and fall” in passionate rendition, to coalesce with the energies that are “Meridian”. The second performance, titled “TWiSTED: SOLO” is inspired by Carter’s own ‘twisted’ journey of living with a crooked spine while pursuing a career in dance, TWiSTED: SOLO is a 45 minute performance that combines monologue, movement, music and visuals to expose the complex layers of revelation and reflection around this story of perseverance. With music by Jacob Cino and Lori Clarke, visuals by Jamie Griffiths and dramaturgy by Lee Su-Feh, TWiSTED:SOLO is storytelling as performance art. It’s a medical memoir with a ‘twist’. It’s an artistic autobiographical surgery. It’s sad. It’s funny. It’s TWiSTED! TWISTED: SOLO has been presented across Canada at the Vancouver Museum of Anthropology’s InBODY Symposium during the Olympic Arts Festival, (March 2010), Canada Dance OFF-Festival (June 2010), Festival Corps Atypik in Montréal, (March 2011), Dance in Vancouver 2011 (Nov 2011) and the International Day for Disability at Vancouver’s Roundhouse, (Dec 2011). Martha Carter will also be teaching two workshops in Nanaimo on Sunday, May 5. “Dancing With Your Spine” and “Gentle Body Stretching for Backcare and Scoliosis” emphasizes Martha’s mission to connect people with their bodies through dance.

“They made it possible for me to Succeed” When I think back to my last years of high school, it was very carefree. I needed someone to say to me, “Hey! You have to think about your future! What are you going to do for the rest of your life?” I was lost in a party world, but going back to college helped me to grow as a person, helped me set boundaries and know where I wanted to go. Before the end of high school, I ended up getting married and moving to another country, drifting in and out of meaningless jobs not knowing which direction I wanted to go. Having a child changed my life in ways I never imagined possible. I basically put any thoughts of a career on hold as I put all my energies towards this child.

Ana McManus – Graduate Community Support Worker

One day I was driving on Bowen Road and saw a sign for Discovery College. I signed up for the Community Support Worker Program and started the course not knowing what to do or expect. You see a lot of stuff that you are not aware even existed. I have to admit it was intimidating coming back to school at this point in my life. I have a partner and I have kids and bills! But there comes a time when you have to put yourself and your happiness first. I wanted a career so I can give my daughter a better life. At first, it was hard to accommodate day care and school, but they made it possible for me to succeed. At Discovery I grew not only personally, but spiritually. The teachers I had were wonderful. The small class certainly helps a lot because it made it possible for me to have a close connection to the teachers and staff. I can proudly say that. going to Discovery was one of the greatest choices I have made in my life. Now I not only have a job, but a career which I am proud of. I get to help people, to empower them to participate and engage in the community. Thank you Discovery College team! Special thanks to Krista, Ray, and to the angel Diane Lloyd.

WhatsOn

home Here are some very useful tips on organizing your home. Taking that first step is the most important part of organizing your home. So now let’s get started on step one. This is critical because you can’t get to where you want to go unless you know what that “where” looks like. How do you want this room to function? How do you want to feel when you’re in it? What do you want to do in this room? What is the real purpose of this room? Tip #1 Get a pad of paper and pen and walk through each room of your home and write down what you see. It is important not to be overwhelmed. Try doing this systematically.

For example, here is what you might see in your home entry way: shoes, unopened newspapers, mail and circulars that are left at your door, keys, pet toys, coats, sweaters and more. Now write down what can be done to eliminate this clutter. Tip #2 - Organize Storage All things in the home must have a “Home” that’s one of the things I say to my kids. Why? Because when something is not seen (in the closet) you can get the False Feeling of “it’s all organized.” On the

shelves divide up sweaters, blouses, the clothes you wear now. As for racks - great for shoes.

Tip #3 - Organize your kitchen Organize you cabinets for plates, Tupperware, guest tableware - separately if possible, if not, separate shelves. Another great (often overlooked) storage facility is the “Dishwasher” - storage and “purpose” rolled into one! In other words never leave dirty dishes piling up. They look horrible and can turn into a monster. Tip #4 - Organize the Bathrooms Ideally, if you have the space and children two bathrooms are great. Make sure that shelves for the toothpaste are just the ‘right’ height for the children in their bathroom. In addition, keep no make up or any potentially dangerous articles in the children’s bathroom within reach!

Tip #5 - Organize the Garage Start out by making piles, for example: Yard tools, hand tools etc. Begin by clearing off the work bench if you have one. You might want to purchase some storage containers for the things you have in the house you want to save. Label the containers and stack them in the garage. You can buy hooks to

hang rakes, shovels, hoses, bicycles etc

Tip #6 - Have a garage sale After you go through the house and garage, you will end up with many things you no longer want. The most fun way to get rid of these items is by having a garage sale. You will be amazed at the amount of money you can possibly earn and what you don’t sell you can give away or donate. Good luck with the re-organization!

PET TIP Tick Talk

Written Dr. Alexandra Garroni Applecross Veterinary Hospital

Now that spring is here, we will all be going outdoors to enjoy some fun in the sun. Wooded areas and tall grasses are home to many insects and ticks. Ticks are arachnids, in the same family as spiders, and feed off a host’s blood. There are various species of ticks that call Vancouver Island home. The most common are the Western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) and deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), as well as Ixodes angustus. Ticks will often spend a few days on their host looking for just the right spot to settle down for a meal. These ticks have a life cycle that involves three hosts they feed on while growing. To feed, ticks use their mouthparts to bite the host. Ticks are capable of transmitting bacteria that can cause diseases as they are feeding, namely Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), anaplasma and ehrichlia. It is the nymph stage, who feeds on the second host, which is the most capable of transmitting disease. According to Vancouver Island Health Authority in 2012 (www.VIHA. ca), it was estimated that less than 1% of ticks in BC carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. To further protect your pet against Lyme disease, please ask about the Lyme vaccine. If you find a tick on your pet, it is important to remove the entire body, not to leave the head embedded in the skin. The correct way to remove a tick is to twist it at the base and pull straight up. Do not pinch the tick as this may cause them to regurgitate the bacteria that can cause disease. Tick twisters are available to help pet owners safely remove ticks. For pets that spend a lot of time outside, tick repellent products, such as Advantix, Revolution and Advantage Multi are available. For more information regarding these products, please give us a call or stop by to chat. Remember, ticks will always have legs, eight of them, and are grey or brown in colour, so take a

close look and make sure that it is truly a tick that you are trying to remove! Some small masses or nipples can very closely resemble ticks!

250-618-3443 BodyTempo.com In the l940s, farmers attempted to use cheap, industrial grade coconut oil to fatten their animals for market. More fat in the diet = fatter cattle, right? Wrong! The farmers found that coconut oil made the cows lean and active. By the late 1940s, the solution was found and remains in place today – feed animals soy and corn and they will get fat quickly and on less food – largely because of the oils in soy and corn. Its proponents say it relieves stress, promotes increased immunity, metabolism and weight loss, fights viruses, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney problems, heart disease, high blood pressure and much more. Topically applied, it is said to prevent wrinkling and be good for dry skin and hair. The question is why is it so good for you if it’s a saturated fat? We have been told to decrease our saturated fats to reduce our cholesterol, right? Well coconut is considered to be an exception because it is about half the saturated fat in the oil is medium-chain fatty acids, which are easier to digest than the more prevalent long-chain fatty acids in most other oils, including butter. Other great benefits to storage of coconut oil. The unsaturated oils in some cooked foods become rancid in just a few hours, even at refrigerator temperatures, and are responsible for the stale taste of left-over foods. (Eating slightly stale food isn’t particularly harmful, since the same oils, even when eaten absolutely fresh, will oxidize at a much higher rate once they are in the body, where they are heated and thoroughly

WHATS ON NAnAIMO Tina Coldwell of TLC Entertainment interviewed Carole Pope for Whats On Digest Nanaimo May 2013. Carole Pope and Rough Trade, known for their provocative lyrics and ushered Canada from the punk movement of the 1970s to the new wave sound of the 1980s and catapulted themselves into the international music scene. Attracting what Carole calls “a diversified audience. Carole has earned three Juno Awards, a Genie Award, and four Gold and two Platinum records. With new CD called “ Land Fall” she will be touring Vancouver Island in May doing an acoustic show with Ryan McMahon opening for all her shows. TC: I noticed you were born in Manchester have you ever gone back ? Being on the road over the years, do you have a favorite place you’ve visited? CP: We moved to North America when I was 5. One of my favorite places is Reykjavik in Iceland. Icelanders are very cool and politically active especially after the banks failed and they threw the bums out and fined them. The landscape is surreal and beautiful. TC: What do you listen to from the past? and presently who do you like? CP: I’m always inspired by Bjork, Fiona Apple and PJ Harvey I like the new Bowie album. TC: You’re doing three dates on Vancouver Island – do you like the Island have you ever had a chance to check out the sights?

CP: I’m not that familiar with the island but am hoping to check out the sights and get some hiking and biking in.

Carole Pope

TC: You had a new CD out in 2011 called “ Land Fall” are you getting some radio play ? Tell us about it.. I noticed you have Rufus Wainwright doing a duet. If you could do a duet with anyone at all who would you do one with?

CP: Landfall is about the state of flux we’re all in and coping with it. It’s getting radio play but some people are unaware of it so I’m touring to get the word out. I’d like to do a duet with PJ Harvey or Bjork. TC: You sister is creative too right? a producer ... did your parents encourage that in you as children is that why both of you ended up in entertainment? Did either of them sing? CP: My mother was in English Hall shows during WW2 and was very nostalgic about it. She took us to movies and theater when we were kids. My other sister and brother used to sing.

CP: Thanks for the interview.... we are looking forward to seeing you play here again anything else we should know about your acoustic shows here on the Island? CP: We’re going to do a little bit of everything from my solo albums and some Rough Trade tunes 3 dates on Vancouver Island Crofton Hotel May 23, Errington Hall May 24, Joe’s Garage May 25

A Blonde’s Flight To Chicago

A commercial airplane is in flight to Chicago, when a blonde woman sitting in economy gets up and moves to an open seat in the first class section. A flight attendant watches her do this, and politely informs the woman that she must return to her seat in the economy class because that’s the type of ticket she paid for. The blonde woman replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Chicago and I’m staying right here.” After repeated attempts and no success convincing the woman to return to economy, the flight attendant goes into the cockpit and informs the pilot and co-pilot that there’s a blonde bimbo sitting in first class who refuses to go back to her proper seat. The co-pilot goes back to the woman and explains

why she needs to move, but once again the woman replies by saying, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to Chicago and I’m staying right here.” The co-pilot returns to the cockpit and suggests that perhaps they should have the arrival gate call the police and have the woman arrested when they land. The pilot says, “You say she’s blonde? I’ll handle this. I’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde.” He kneels down next to the woman and whispers quietly in her ear, and she says, “Oh, I’m sorry,” then quickly moves back to her seat in economy class. The flight attendant and co-pilot are amazed and ask him what he said to get her to move back to economy without causing any fuss. “I told her first class isn’t going to Chicago.”

I AM A DEBTOR - JUDGE ME NOT There’s a stigma associated with being a debtor – they are perceived as being irresponsible spenders who buy large screen TVS, luxurious furniture and expensive clothes, who rack up their cards until they’re maxed – you’ve seen them I’m sure. They should pay for their excesses… right?!

Let me tell you about the average debtor: they’re just like you! In fact given the right or, perhaps more aptly put, the wrong circumstances that debtor could be you! Most debtors have had something quite awful happen to them that has forced them down the slippery slope into the depths of DEBT. They never it saw IT coming and most would have said that they were responsible consumers until IT happened. The debtor could be a friend, a relative or a neighbour but because of the stigma of debt, you may never know. Their debt is their secret. I hear it in their voices when they call me: the fear and the shame. Their voices beg me not to judge them – they need to tell their stories. The stories are heart wrenching and desperate. I feel so They worked to pay fortunate that they the debt, skimping on can share their groceries, surviving deepest secrets on Kraft Dinner with me.

(it fills the tummy)

I hear stories of cancer, job loss, accidents, failed businesses and divorce. How they had nowhere to turn so they used credit cards to make ends meet, but month after month the debt grew like a shadow sneaking up in the night. One day they realized that everything they did revolved around the debt and they were in a hole so deep that no matter how fast they dug they were never getting out. They worked to pay the debt, skimping on groceries, surviving on Kraft Dinner (it fills the tummy), neglecting their health and their assets all to service that debt. Although debtor’s prison was abolished

in the early 19th Century – for the debtor their burden of debt is nothing more than a modern day debtor’s prison. Simply put, debt does not discriminate… people do!
