Note to the Reader Thank you for your patronage. What’s On Digest January 2018 style. There is simply no stopping the activities and events Nanaimo. C’mon…. you know that by now right? There is way too much going on and there is really no time for sleep. Who was it that said, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead…”? I think it was Bon Jovi but anyway…doesn’t matter. Now is not time to sleep like a hibernating bear. It’s time to, like the song says: “…. get up, get up, get busy do it.” Get up, get out, and get your tickets to the live rock performance by “Time” the Pink Floyd tribute band playing the Port Theatre in February (do it now they sold out last time). Plan for the excellent, stirring, performances by the Vancouver Island Symphony. Plan for the performances at, and put on by, your local theatre group. Most of all plan to get out and enjoy the local sights, sounds and scenery Nanaimo has to offer. While doing so I encourage you to think critically about patronizing those local businesses in Nanaimo that, the owners of which, are often, themselves, patrons of the arts. If local events don’t have great local sponsors many performance arts groups wouldn’t have the funding they require to function properly. Local businesses sponsor local events…what a concept. When was the last time a big-box mega mart sponsored a local event in Nanaimo? Ask yourself where the profits of larger outside companies end up and how those profits are spent. In the case of many large US retailers those profits end up funding organizations, the operations of which are, counter to Canadian values. I can’t support that. Local businesses are often much friendlier and comfortable places to shop anyway. In any event, the politics of commerce aside, thank you Nanaimo for being ‘awesome’, thank you to local business for sponsoring great events and for being the best place on earth to live, work, and play.

Freshen the Air in Your Home this Winter Winter is officially here. Cold winds and inclement weather will keep many of us huddled inside this month, but keeping our windows closed all the time can create a build-up of indoor air pollutants in our homes that leave us feeling unwell. From dust, mold and pet dander to wood-stove emissions and off-gases from paint, carpeting, glue, cleaning products and more, the air in our homes can become an unhealthy ‘stew’. From the unpleasantness of chapped lips and dry, itchy skin to frequent headaches, long-lasting colds, bronchitis and even chronic asthma, there are many symptoms of ‘sick house syndrome’. The good news is that there are many simple and inexpensive ways to combat it. The first and most obvious plan of action is, of course, to open your windows and air out your house for a period of time. ‘Out with the old and in with the new’ isn’t just a New Year’s resolution! Let in some fresh air and enjoy the rejuvenation it brings. Regular cleaning, dusting and vacuuming can reduce mold, pollen, pet dander and dust mites in your home. Using a vacuum with a hepa-filter and choosing non-toxic cleaning products is a good choice toward that end as well.

Bring living plants into your home if you haven’t already! They are nature’s air purifiers. NASA research indicates that ferns, spider plants and aloe vera are your best bets. Plants add oxygen to the air and their roots, soils and leaves absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone, formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and other chemical contaminants. Essential oils can be used to effectively freshen indoor air, and are a much healthier choice than chemically-based air fresheners. Some research

whatsondigest.com | JANUARY 2018

also indicates that lavender, eucalyptus and tea tree oil all possess antimicrobial properties that, when evaporated, begin eradicating airborne fungi and bacteria within 30 to 60 minutes. There are many ways to enjoy the invigorating scent of essential oils, too. Consider putting a few drops of essential oil into a small dish of baking soda, sprinkle on your carpets then vacuum up after half an hour. A room spritzer is another alternative, as is investing in a diffuser. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy!

Help Stamp Out Distracted Driving The statistics are alarming. Distracted driving continues to claim more lives on BC roads than impaired driving. Every year, on average, 8 people are killed in distracted driving-related crashes on Vancouver Island. In fact, distraction and driver inattention is one of the top contributing factors in motor vehicle fatalities in BC and, according to police data from 2011 - 2015, contributes to more than one quarter of all car crash deaths. But just what qualifies as ‘distracted driving’? We are all aware of the dangers of using our cellphones while behind the wheel. But it is much more than that. Driver inattention, and driver distraction from internal/external sources is also dangerous. Opening a food wrapper, turning around to check on your kids in the backseat, gawking at the scenery: it is all dangerous while operating a moving vehicle. And who hasn’t been guilty of at least one of those? Self-examination, not recrimination, is the best way to move forward and make positive change. Indeed, with all the distractions that exist both inside and out of our vehicles, always remaining focused on the road is not easy and requires a very conscious decision to do so. Here are a few tips to help you, your car passengers and those around you remain safe. No call, text or email is worth risking your life for. Let calls go to voicemail and ignore text messages while driving Turn off your device and put it out of reach to avoid the temptation to check

Ask about our Tire Rebates & SAVE

Assign a designated texter. Ask your passenger to make or receive calls and texts on your behalf Pull over to make or receive a call when it’s safe to do so. For longer journeys, look for signs at highway rest areas, some of which now provide free Wi-Fi Choose to activate the ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ feature, coming soon for iPhone users Many drivers might be surprised to learn that it is against the law to use your cellphone at a red light, or when stuck in gridlock. It is legal to use a ‘hands-free’ device while driving, which means a Bluetooth, wired headset or speakerphone that can be operated with one touch or voice commands. It is important to note however that if you have a Learner’s (L) or Novice (N) license, using any electronic device while driving, even a hands-free one, is against the law. So what can you do besides practice attentive, safe driving? Consider getting involved in a pilot project from ICBC that, with the help of an app installed on your phone, disables your phone when your car is being driven. Or pick up a distracted driving sticker at participating ICBC Driver Licensing and Autoplan broker offices. Show your support and help make your community a safer place to be!

BETHLEHEM CENTRE is offering a peaceful weekend of chanting to erase your stress from the modern-day hectic pace. The relaxing full weekend workshop takes place starting at 3:00 PM Friday, January 26th until 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 28th at 2371 Arbot Rd. Hosted by Gabriola Island’s Trio Sayso sensational musical group Trio Sayso featuring the blissful vocal harmonies of multi-instrumentalist Tina Jones, cellist Alannah Dow, and keyboardist/pianist Leah Hokanson, the weekend will offer unique chanting workshop experiences from diverse cultures. The weekend includes chanting based upon the Jewish tradition with Vancouver School of Theology’s Director of inter-religious studies and gifted orator Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan, along with her husband Charles, a professional musician. There will also be Kirtan. In addition, Christian, Muslim, and other chanting practices will be announced. Tuition for the weekend is $495 and includes meals and accommodation. Tuition for day commuters (no accommodation) is $375 and includes meals. Save $50 on tuition ($445 and $325) if you register before Monday, December 18th. Space is limited to 30 people. Meditation practices such as chanting have been shown to reduce the body’s stress response. Hong Kong Center of Buddhist Studies researchers discovered that the power of chanting is highly effective when dealing with psychological suffering. As an added bonus, chanting offers psychological healing benefits by enabling the manifesting of intention, while connecting the practitioner with the divine.

PET TIP New Years is about You and Your Pet The holiday season has just passed, and the slowing of festivities brings the new year. This is a time full of happiness, love, laughter and resolutions and I think it is also a great time to remember our pets. Many resolutions revolve around bettering ourselves, be it our health, eating habits, services and gifts to others; and many of these activities can include our furry friends! There is ample research supporting the health and wellness benefits of the human animal bond. Keeping your cat or dog in mind when

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

you are preparing your next physical activity, and asking yourself “when was the last time I gave some exercise and attention to my pet”; for dogs that may be bringing them on the next walk or hike. Or trying new training techniques, for 5 minutes each day, to allow your dogs mind to be active and grow. For cats it may be playing around the house with laser toys, feather toys or the like. Spending some time outdoors with your pets can be rewarding for both parties involved! When meal planning for oneself, reflecting on how we can enrich our pets lives while eatingcats love to ‘look’ and ‘hunt’ for their food; perhaps separating out their dry food into different areas around the house to allow them to walk around and find their treats will allow them to bring out their instinctual hunting habits. Dogs love getting food rewards as positive training tools, so incorporating part of their daily caloric intake in the form of their dry kibble is an easy way to not add extra calories to their day, but allow for a positive experience and reward throughout training. We bring as much happiness and fulfilment to our pets lives as they do to ours. Many pets are considered a family member; recognizing and nurturing this relationship can also be added into your new years plans. Animals bring social, psychological and emotional support to our families, and the number of families that own one or multiple household pets is on the rise! The social benefits with regards to raising children in pet friendly households has also been well documented. And, recognizing the physiological affects of having a pet can be paramount to improving our health and wellbeing. Having a pet can decrease stress levels, blood pressure levels etc. Animals have been used as therapy tools for many years. The mental health of our pets should be just as important as our own. We encourage you all to give some love and attention to our four legged friends in this new year! Best wishes from the team at Applecross!

Tips for Traveling Light The Boutique is hustling and bustling with ladies heading to warm destinations like Thailand, Hawaii, Mexico and preparing for Cruising and Europe. Packing light means choosing the right pieces and our experience tells us that you need to choose items you will wear more than once unless these is a special occasion. Destinations like Thailand you would benefit with a midi/maxi skirt or lightweight dresses that are much cooler to wear for daywear and add a scarf or wrap in preparation for visiting temples etc. Wraps are useful on the plane, cool mountains or over airconditioned ships and help with layering if going through many climate zones. Inexpensive jewelry is a simple way to change up your outfits from day to evening wear. Choose tops that interact with all your bottoms. Start with 5 bottoms and 7 tops... Bottoms can include skirts. capris... shorts (Bermuda length more respectful length for most countries) slacks. Avoid clothes that need to be dry-cleaned. “TIME” - CANADA’S PINK FLO What’s On Digest Nanaimo recently had the opportunity to interview, Gerry Pool, the drummer with the rock band “TIME” a Pink Floyd tribute band playing the Port Theatre Nanaimo February 10th.

WHAT’S ON: In your experience performing as a Pink Floyd tribute band what are some of the elements of the rock band TIME that make it a unique experience? Gerry Pool: The attention to detail. I have never been a part of any other project that spends as much time as we do on the details. Pink Floyd’s music is very scripted, and their fans are very intimate with Pink Floyd’s songs. They know when and where certain landmarks are in all the songs, they are also very intimate with the melodies of the solos throughout the songs, and expect to hear them - just like the record. We try to re-create the songs from the albums and bring it to a live setting. There is an immense amount pressure to get it right. The other part of the performance is the production side of things. We travel with the same production crew for each theatre we play. This way, we can ensure consistency from show to show. Our sound man, Mike, is a master of his craft. The lights and laser show always delivers on the “wow” factor thanks to our lighting tech, Andrew. Finally, the audio-visual part of the show is handled by Ken. From babies crying to helicopters landing, Ken knows how important his cues are. WO: Does the band have a single favourite song they love to perform live? GP: Everyone in the band has a favourite song. For me, I would have to say my favourite song that we play is “Comfortably Numb” the emotion in this song is incredible. A close second would have to be “Welcome to the Machine” The main reason for me is, being the drummer, I love the feel of both songs; both songs are very powerful. WO: How do you find the Port Theatre as a venue to perform? GP: The Port Theatre is an awesome theatre to play. The sound is fantastic, the theatre crew are

OYD EXPERIENCE great to work with, and the stage is second to none. I have to say this though, this is my home town, and so the nerves can go through the roof. The last thing anyone wants to do is stink it up in your own backyard. However, once you have a couple of songs under your belt, you’re back in the saddle - enjoying every second. WO: It’s been awhile since TIME played the Port – I understand it was a sell out crowd. How did you find the audience engagement level? Were people really into it? GP: We played the Port Theatre 2 years ago - almost to the day, and you’re right it was sold out. The audience was totally engaged. All those who attended were and are Pink Floyd fans. They know these songs, and as we would “start” a song, they would recognize it that quick and would hoot and holler right at the get go. - it was awesome. They really made us feel at home. WO: Pink Floyd is such a timeless and classic rock band. Do you think we will continue to see their music revered for many years to come? If so why? GP: You’re right, Pink Floyd’s music is timeless. And that is exactly why their music will be revered for many, many years to come. Their music was way ahead of its time. WO: Do you have merchandise for sale at the show? Gerry Pool: Yes, we do have merchandise for sale at our shows. There will be T shirts, Tank tops, toques, ball caps, picks, and stickers. WO: Can audience members meet the performers after the show? GP: Right after the show, we hustle up to the lobby to say hi and to say thank you. It’s Pink Floyd’s music that the people come to hear, and if we’ve done it right, some folks will like to let us know...

RRSP vs. TFSA No doubt you’re hearing lots about RRSPs at this time of year, but a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) isn’t the only tool available to help you in your retirement (or it shouldn’t be the only one). Have you considered a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)? TFSAs have been available since 2009, with a current annual maximum contribution amount of $5,500. Growth in a TFSA is tax free and it doesn’t count against any government benefits in retirement, potentially making it a better or important complementary investment tool when planning for retirement. You can hold GICs, mutual funds, cash and segregated funds in your TFSA, according to your risk tolerance. When you want to draw money, you can take it in lump sums or set up a monthly payment to supplement your other retirement streams. Are you curious about TFSAs and RRSPs? Let’s meet and see what’s best for your situation. Nahanni Ackroyd Financial Security Advisor, Freedom 55 Financial FMI SEE AD PG 9

With more and more companies offering puzzles, these are a few of our favourites: The Ravensburger company has been making puzzles for over a hundred years. They have developed a solid reputation for their durable puzzles for all ages – from tray puzzles for kids to 2000+ pieces for grownups. Many of our customers like the fact that the puzzles pieces form a vertical / horizontal grid, for easier assembly.

Cobble Hill puzzles is a relative newcomer to the market. As the name suggests, they are a local company based out of Victoria! Their range of 275 piece puzzles are great for those with decreasing eyesight or fine motor skills, with larger pieces and grown up designs. A lot of our customers find their 1000 piece puzzles a particular challenge, as they are cut randomly – adding to the challenge. Family Puzzles, by Cobble Hill, are a great innovation that allow multi-age participants to work on a puzzle at the same time. From 350 to 400 pieces, they have three different size pieces. The little ones can be working on one side with the big pieces while the grownups have the small pieces on the opposite side. What to do with your old computer What to do with your old personal computer? If you received, or purchased, a new computer recently chances are good that you will try to sell your older model. The used computer market is strong; but how much can you get for a used PC? If your computer was maintained by Bitrate computers you will have a virus-free, fast, and up to date system. This is a good thing. The type of person who buys a used computer typically has very good knowledge of what to look for. If the computer was neglected it will show and your ability to sell it at all, let alone making it worth the effort, will be compromised. So, if you want to command top dollar for your old system, and get on with enjoying your new one, ensure to take it in for regular checkups to Steve at Bitrate Computers in Nanaimo. ELVIS ELVIS ELVIS

ULTIMATE TRIBUTE TO THE KING SUNDAY JANUARY 21ST • 7PM • PORT THEATRE

Shawn Klush is not your average Elvis Tribute Artist. He portrays Elvis so believably that he was once accused of using an actual photo of Elvis on his posters and advertising materials. So, it is no surprise to learn that Klush was the last man standing when Elvis Presley Enterprises decided to search the world for the best of the best Elvis tribute artists on the planet. Klush was crowned the world’s number one Elvis Tribute Artist in Memphis, TN in August 2009. The instant rise in popularity wasn’t a big stretch for Klush who had been honing his skills for over ten years. His youthful good looks had matured into a strong likeness to the King and his vocal abilities and on-stage charisma developed greatly as a result of this experience... timed perfectly to win the Ultimate Elvis championship.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity of having many of Elvis’ original people help me with my career” SHAWN KLUSH The Legends of Rock’n’roll (producers of Elvis Elvis Elvis) are the people behind this premier Elvis event starring Shawn Klush as Elvis in the 70’s and Cody Ray Slaughter as Elvis in the 50’s & 60’s plus the Legends All-Star Band with the Little Big Band Horns & TCB Singers. Check out the Red Robinson TV interview with Shawn Klush which includes several live on-stage video clips at www.ElvisElvisElvis.info

Simon Says... Rock the Boat

In social contexts we often see or hear what we want to. We look for and hold onto things that reinforce what we believe to be true and we are apt to ignore or disregard evidence to the contrary. This bias is self-serving, or Trumpian if you like, in that it often has little to do with reality and everything to do with providing comfort to the perceiver and stability of the ‘self ’. Because we often don’t tend to question our own biases it may be tempting to accept the notion that ‘perception is reality’. For example, when we hear a story about a famous person who supposedly did something awful we are quick to accept it. It may be that this reaction excuses our having to learn more about them or find out for ourselves if what we heard was true. Simply put, perception is not reality any more than a rumour is truth. If anything, perception reflects our built-in ability to filter what we see or hear, according to certain parameters, to reach understanding. When truth itself is not immediately knowable what remains is perception. It can become even more difficult to separate truth from fiction when a group of people share an erroneous perception. When this occurs we now have what is called: groupthink. Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs in a group when the desire to fit in with the group results in acceptance of irrational beliefs. Numerous studies on this suggest that individual perceptions are very often flawed and imbued with biases. More studies still have found that groupthink is usually based on false perceptions about truth and reality. So, we have a situation where certain phenomena give rise to perceptions which are recognized to be false, or grossly biased, but somehow still form the underpinning of what we tell ourselves individually or what we accept as a group. What the heck is wrong with us!?! Perhaps it is the fact that it’s all too easy to play along or to go along with the group and not rock the boat. Perhaps we are hard-wired to not make a scene or maybe we have just learned that making a scene is too much effort with too little reward. Whatever the case may be, we have just flipped the calendar to 2018 and are into a new year and a new start. If you find yourself complicit, within a group context, of ‘toeing the line’ stop for a minute and think about the reasons for what you believe. You can be the master of your perceptions if you become aware of the reasons underlying them. If you feel yourself having a knee-jerk reaction to something count to 10 and use that time to question your assumptions. Give yourself the time to reflect and analyse what you are seeing and hearing. You may just find that your initial, instinctive, reaction or perception of something was not correct. If this is the case, then maybe it’s time to hit reset on some of what you believe and to really think about why you believe it. A good place to start is with patience, awareness of your tendency to pre-judge, and a little critical thinking. Happy New Year!
