DEBT Is A Four Letter Word Yes, DEBT can be a bad word! It fills us with visions of irresponsibility and shame. Not all debt is bad; there is GOOD debt. The debt you get into when you take out a mortgage to buy a home is considered good debt. Student loans can also be considered good debt because they are increasing your knowledge and your earning potential. Another good debt can be a loan taken out to build a business. Then there's BAD debt; consumer debt is considered BAD debt. When you use credit cards to shop and you don't pay off the entire balance then that's BAD debt! Getting into debt is easy. No one decides to get into debt, it happens so gradually you don't see the warning signs. A bit of shopping here, a meal out there, some car repairs, slowly bit by bit it adds up. When the statement arrives, it's bigger than you expected, things would be a bit tight if you pay it all so you pay part. Then the next month there's the interest charges on top so again you pay only part, soon the balance starts to go up and before you know it, all you can afford is to make minimum payments and you're in a financial mess. Wouldn't it be great if there was an easy way to figure out if you had too much BAD debt? Well there is!! There's a simple calculation to calculate your Critical Debt Load that will let you know if you're in trouble. The calculation is based on the fact that to be financially healthy your monthly debt load must be less than 15% of your monthly income. Here's how to calculate your Critical Debt Load: Critical Debt Load = Monthly Income X 0.15
Getting into debt is easy. No one decides to get into debt, it happens so gradually you don't see the warning signs.
Is debt keeping you awake at night? Turn all your debts into one low monthly payment – at 0% interest. As Canada’s largest debt restructuring, budgeting and credit rebuilding company, 4 Pillars helps people like you reduce their debt by an average of 70%. Contact us for a free face-to-face consultation, and tell us your story. We can help you, just like we have helped thousands of other Canadians struggling with debt.
This is how the calculation looks for a monthly take home income of $3,000: Critical Debt Load = $3000 X 0.15 = $450 If you're paying more than your Critical Debt Load to service your BAD debt then youíre headed into financial difficulty and it's time to get help.

Whats On Music I recently had the opportunity to speak with Ken Lavigne, formerly one of the famous Canadian Tenors, now a solo artist in the classical crossover genre. Ken lives in central Vancouver Island. We met at the Willow Street Cafe in Chemainus and talked about his very exciting life and career. WO: First let me just say that I admire your drive and your ability to follow your dreams. It takes guts and perseverance to follow your heart and listen to your inner voice. KL: Wow! Thank you! WO: If you could clarify what is meant by “classical crossover genre”? KL: I would say this genre has come into it’s own over last decade and could be described as classically trained vocalists who move into the popular music realm. WO: I understand you are recording a new CD. Can you tell me a bit about that and how it’s going? KL: I was hemming and hawing about recording a Christmas album. I knew I had a break in my touring schedule so I called some friends to see if they’d be interested in helping put it together. It’s now mushrooming into a 40 piece orchestra and a becoming huge extravaganza but I love it because we are building something that is going to last and that is very exciting. WO: What stands out in your mind as your greatest professional achievement to date? KL: I would say that picking up the phone to call Carnegie hall was the biggest personal and professional achievement. The phone felt like it weighed about 700lbs - I’m not that kind of person - the “mad go getter.” But, I realized that I should not let any obstacles get in my way of my dream to play Carnegie Hall. From that one action things just grew from there. Of course, with this career, sometimes it feels like you are strapped to the front end of a freight train going a hundred miles an hour but nevertheless it’s a lot of fun. WO: How often do you perform and where? KL: Annually I perform anywhere from 45 to 60 concerts all over the world. This year (2013) I have over 50 concerts. WO: Amazing! Not that you have a lot of spare time but when you are not performing what fills your time? KL: Spare time? What’s that? When I have some down time, I love being creative and working
with my hands and have developed a love of masonry and carpentry. I also love classic cars – sadly I currently don’t have a garage to work on projects but that doesn’t stop me from dreaming. WO: Do you have a family? KL: Yes happily married with 3 Kids here on the island. WO: Who were the biggest influences on your career and why? KL: Musically the biggest influences are Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. Career wise my mentor Selena James of the Victoria Conservatory continues to be a big influence on me. Over the past 15 years Selena has been a constant source of guidance. She’s really kept me grounded vocally and doesn't let me get away with any short cuts which can creep in over time. WO: Who are your favorite contemporary artists. KL: Hmmm (thinking ) let me see... I did not grow up listening to opera at all. I grew up listening to classic rock and oldies but according to my iPod’s “most listened” playlist I’m listening to a lot of Arcade Fire, Imagine Dragons and other modern bands. Thanks for doing this interview it was great to talk to you and I look forward to your new CD! Interview by Simon Rideout

PET TIP Pet Life Stages
Written by Dr. Julie Lamb, Applecross Veterinary Hospital
The Neonatal Stage Neonatal means very young puppies and kittens. From birth to approximately 6 weeks. During this time the little guys are very attached to mom and require her for sustenance and to help them eliminate wastes from their bodies. They are very focused on mom and get distressed when they are not near her. During this early part of their lives they are tiny and. Their vocalizations are mostly instinctual and their main sensory development is in their sense of smell and touch. Taste develops as well, and sight and hearing start to become better throughout this lifestage.
During this time there are periods of rapid growth which taper off towards the end. They require a healthy diet made specifically for this age group. These little guys cannot eat adult food as it does not have the appropriate concentrations of nutrients. Dogs and cats in the early stages of this age group are very susceptible to disease and illness and require a great deal of veterinary care. They also require a lot of patience and love as they learn about their environments and try to figure out the rules of their lives without understanding much of the language being spoken.
Pups and baby kittens are very cute during this stage, but they need their mom. They are learning how to act as a normal part of the group. Their siblings are showing them how to not hurt each other and that they don’t get to play when they are rough. Their mom is teaching them bite inhibition and normal social structure. All of this we sometimes assume is just instinct. But it isn’t. Without a mom and siblings at this age, puppies and kittens will have difficulty fitting into a human family. Never remove a neonatal animal from its birth family.
Next week we will take a break from lifestages to look at Christmas, and how to make it a happy one for all members of the family!
The Pediatric Stage The next lifestage is the pediatric stage. This lasts from approximately 6 weeks to about 8 to 16 months, depending on the adult size of the animal. At about 6 weeks, for puppies, and a bit earlier for kittens, start to seek friendship outside their birth family. Before this stage, they will definitely interact with humans and other animals, but they tend not to seek out interaction as much as they do past the 6 week mark. This is also the point where puppies really start to have good play sessions with their siblings; again, kittens are a bit earlier. Once these babies enter this stage they can start to interact with their new family. I must stress, however, the majority of their time should still be spent with their birth family. They still have a lot to learn from their brothers and sisters about normal interaction, how to take commands, how to be accepted by the group, and how to not make momma mad. Neither puppies nor kittens should be adopted until they are a minimum of 8 weeks old. In fact, puppies could easily wait until 10 weeks as long as there are frequent visits with their new family.
ASK US ABOUT A WELLNESS PLAN FOR YOUR FURRY FRIEND
The pediactric stages starts ending around 16 months, depending on breed. There are a few definitions to determine when pediatric ends and adulthood is reached, but generally it is when the growth plates close. Growth plates are the areas of bones where growth occurs. When the bone is finished growing, a signal is released to tell these growth plates to become bone and stop growing.

Opening night is Dec 6th and the show will run through until Dec 21st . Ten performances are slated on the calendar at the Cedar Community Hall. Cast auditions were held over three days in Vancouver in May, and over one hundred young dancers and singers came out to audition. Four singers and five dancers have been cast and are coming to the island from across Canada to perform. The two-week intensive rehearsal period is set to begin on November 19th. The cast and crew will be faced with the task of bringing to life over 50 pieces of music.
Katy Bowen-Roberts, creator of this show, was in London, England this summer choosing more dazzling costumes for this year’s show. “I love going to see Mr Bahal in my favorite costume store in London. The shop is full of sequins! In talking with Mr Bahal, I learned that each sequin is sewn on individually to each dress. The quality is amazing!”. For more information about the show, please visit www.yellowpointchristmasspectacular.ca. It’s quickly becoming a tradition for audiences across Vancouver Island. You’ve heard it before: It’s the biggest investment of your life. That’s why professionals such as real estate agents, mortgage brokers, insurance agents, inspectors and appraisers play an important role in protecting your investment in real estate. But what about the legal issues that can arise with home ownership? For example closing a purchase agreement involves consulting a lawyer. Many people put themselves at risk and avoid working with lawyers due to the perception of high cost. Fortunately right here in Nanaimo LegalShield offers full access to legal advice and protection on an unlimited number of issues, without worrying about high hourly costs? The Winter Tune Up There are some pretty basic things you can do to get your car ready for our unpredictable winters here in Nanaimo. Whether rain or snow you can bet it will be wet at some point through the late fall and winter season. It’s definitely a comforting feeling knowing you are prepared for any weather. So here are some tips and here’s to a safe and fun winter driving season. The first thing you will want to do is get to know your local mechanic or tire service manager. There’s nothing better than getting a feeling of trust that comes with familiarity. Don’t go in to your tire retailer or your brake and muffler shop with a big chip on your shoulder. Go in with a smile and a warm hello. It really goes a long way and you will have a better experience for it. Once you have established some rapport let them know any specific concerns
Article by Simon Rideout
Lower costs or faster turn-around time can be another advantage. you may have. My advice is to make sure you have the following basics in preparation for winter driving: • • • • •
Snow tires New wipers & “wiper juice” Radiator coolant change Brake inspection Oil change
If you can’t afford to do it all at once you should prioritize. Your service technician can help you with that once he’s has a chance to do a quick inspection. It’s far better to take a few basic precautions before winter hits than to put it off only to be caught in the middle of a snowstorm wishing you had. Lastly November is the perfect time to prepare before the madness of the season is pulling you in too many different directions.

Both of my Grandfathers fought in WWII. Simon Rideout In fact my maternal Grandfather, William Stewart (at the age of 17 no less), also fought in the trenches in WWI. War veterans see and experience things that most people are blessed not to have to endure. It is important that we never forget the sacrifices made by our ancestors in order that we might have the life of peace and abundance we presently enjoy in this country. The poem "In Flanders Fields" was written by Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae after he witnessed the death of his close friend, just 22 years old, the day before on the battlefields of Europe. Simon Says is an editorial column written by Simon Rideout publisher and editor of "Whats On" Magazine Nanaimo.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
