all they want for

CHRISTMAS November 15, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

A

fundraising campaign is underway to help make Christmas a little brighter for needy families in the community. It’s called All they want for Christmas and organizers are counting on the generosity of Oceanside residents to ensure that at least 100 families who are experiencing significant need will be able to prepare or receive a healthy Christmas meal and provide gifts to their children. Rollie Koop and Virginia Worcester are spearheading the ambitious project. Worcester said for many years a small group of committed community members has quietly worked with the School District to donate food and gifts to families with school-aged children who are not able to provide the basic necessities for a family Christmas in their homes. This year the group wants to broaden their impact and have a secret Santa for 100 families that are struggling to make ends meet. Admission to a fundraising dance on November 15 at the Qualicum Beach Community Centre featuring the cover band Eddie and The Funk is $20, or 200,000 Quality Foods Points or a Quality Foods Q-Bird voucher.

Worcester said it is likely the dance will be a sell out but she added there are many other ways people can help out. “Even if you can’t attend the dance you can donate your Q-points every time you shop at your local Quality Foods Stores. Just mention the words Christmas Rollie & Virginia and your points will be directly donated to our project. We are trying to get as many points as possible to be able to purchase items to build the gift baskets,” she explained. The dance will be festive with a Christmas tree adorned with decorations created by local students and appetizers will be prepared by Pass Woodwinds pupils. Besides the entertainment there will be five special live auction items to bid on that Worcester acknowledged will be priceless. “They will be for an event or experience... things you can’t buy. One of them will be a private dinner with wine pairings at The Beach Club and another will be for a Vancouver Canucks hockey game with hotel, flight and dinner.” Worcester said in the past she has put

together Christmas hampers for six families and it has been done quietly but she admitted there are significantly more families who could use some charity. “People’s biggest misconception is that they don’t think there are families in need but we have a lot of people in our community in need. They don’t understand that people don’t have basic needs in their home. For a lot of kids the only meal they get is from hot lunch program at school. When school is closed over the Christmas break they don’t get a hot meal. When we give them a hamper through our secret Santa they have food for two weeks when they are out of school.” Worcester is hoping the worthy event starting at 7:30 p.m. on Nov 15 will be overflowing with generosity.

Kids are excited to see the fire truck in their neighbourhood … its great.” She said even the neighbourhoods that typically don’t have many residents at home manage to pitch in. She said two years ago a Craig Bay resident collected items ahead of time because so many of them are away in November enjoying the warmer weather down south. “They left it at the club house for us to pick up and we collected 3000 pounds just from Craig Bay Estates. It makes our job easier,” she said and added, “They are on board again this year.” Olson is hoping other strata groups will do the same. The Qualicum Beach and Dashwood Fire Departments will also have trucks circulating through neighbourhoods from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to collect donations of non-perishable foods.

November 21 & 22, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

I

t originated in the United Kingdom and used to be for only the highest echelons of society but you don’t have to be a Royal or go to England to have an authentic high tea experience. If you fancy cucumber sandwiches and scones with a dollop of clotted cream and preserves served on fine bone china The Old School House (TOSH) in Qualicum Beach has an elegant affair this month. TOSH has teamed up with the Historical and Museum Society for an annual event where museum volunteers dress as Victorian maids and serve guests tea, dainty sweets and pastries, finger sandwiches and scones. TOSH executive director Corrine James said the Winter Victorian Tea on November 21 and 22 is always a delightful event where guests are treated to some home made treats all lavishly presented using vintage and antique tableware including delicate teacups, fine linens and silverware. “The ladies from the museum dress in period costume and serve traditional tea. The fine china is from our own collection. The cups, plates and cutlery are authentic,” she noted.

There will be two sittings for the afternoon tea party; one at 12 and the other at 2 p.m. James said it is the perfect location to warm your spirits this time of year and the gallery level will be twinkling with holiday cheer and good wishes for the local charities of the Oceanside area. The walls of the gallery will be adorned with one-of-a-kind wreaths created by the Mid Island Floral Arts Club. A silent auction for the floral arrangements begins November 21 and goes until December 13. On Saturday there will be a fashion show featuring models wearing outfits from the incredible collection of Qualicum Beach's first lady of vintage clothing Merlyn Patten. The theme this year is Suit Yourself and Patten said she is looking forward to showing some amazing two piece fashions. She said there will be different ladies suits representing the 1900’s to modern times. “I have worked in fashion for many years

fb.com/whatsonpqb 23

and putting on a modern day fashion show is relatively a breeze … when a dress doesn't fit the model you just go to the next size on the rack. With a vintage fashion show I don’t have that luxury. Each garment is one-of-a-kind and if it doesn’t fit I must find some thing else. Consequently, I really do not know what is going into a show until I find out which models are available and we start the fittings.”

Tickets are $15 and available at TOSH or over the phone. Reservations are recommended for tables for four or more. Phone 250-752-6133 to reserve tickets or visit www.theoldschoolhouse.org to book tickets and for more information.
