Whats On Music BONFIRE Quintessential tribute to the early music of AC/DC. With hard-rocking, spot-on sound, they are selling out shows, rocking audiences out of their seats, all across the US, including San Diego's prestigious House of Blues. Now, they are bringing their offthe-hook extravaganza to Canada for a limited engagement tour. Get ready for the perennial anthem "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", "TNT", "Let There Be Rock" and "Highway To Hell" along with the rest of the best of "Bon" Scott's signature sound. Their authentic look, sound, vocals and stage presence landed them a nomination for Best Tribute Band at the L.A. Music Awards (2012). Bonfire has performed several times on the Universal City Walk outside concert stage with Richard Blade (Radio, TV, and Film Personality) as the announcer and MC. Richard exclaims, "An amazing tribute band!" Jerry Greenberg (President

of Atlantic Records 1974) worked with AC/DC during his years with Atlantic Records. Bonfire's relationship with Mr. Jerry Greenberg began when he saw a performance, became a fan, and became involved with booking and promoting. He states, "Bonfire is as close as you can get to early AC/DC." Bonfire opened for Foo Fighters at Paladinos in Los Angeles. Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) made a point to mention Bonfire with much excitement between songs, "Did you guys see Bonfire !?!" Jane Wiedlin (Guitarist for the Go Go's), a fan and friend of the band, concludes, "Bonfire are not only the best AC/DC tribute band out there, they are my favorite tribute band, period! They will rock you till it hurts!" For more information about bonfire - a tribute to the music of ac/dc visit: www.labonfire.com. Senior Dog Lifestages

PET TIP Written by Dr. Julie Lamb, Applecross Veterinary Hospital

This is the last phase in our discussion on dog and cat lifestages. One of the biggest concerns that owners have is that their pets lead healthy, happy lives for as long as possible. As dogs age, one of the problems we see is arthritis; however, slowing down due to this problem is not inevitable. Arthritis can be helped by using nutrition and supplements, without drugs, in order to keep the joints healthy. There are probably thousands of combinations of supplements that you can find to help arthritis but what you want to see is a combination that includes MSM, Glucosamine, and Chondroitin. These three supplements provide great health benefits including joint health. In a future article, we will go over how each of these supplements work but, for now, back to our senior pets. As they age, dogs can develop problems with their internal organs. The most common of these include thyroid, liver, and kidney problems. These can be detected through simple bloodwork and, if caught early enough, can be treated effectively. Female dogs, like older human women, can develop a “leaky bladder” – this is usually accompanied by a bladder infection as the bacteria move up the urethra (tube between the bladder and the outside) and set up residence in the bladder. If your older girl develops this condition, you will find that she may wake up with a puddle where she sleeps, lose bladder control when she is excited (and this is uncharacteristic) or seems to have a chronic urine smell to her. With an exam and a urine sample your veterinarian can look for an infection and other medical causes of this problem. After the infection is cleared up, your veterinarian will then decide if your pet requires a supplement or medication to help her bladder regain its ability to hold urine normally. The last major problem we see in aging dogs is their teeth. If they have not had yearly dental cleanings by a veterinary health team, their teeth have usually progressed into the realm of severe dental disease. This is characterized by bad breath, dark brown discoloration of the teeth, red to dark red swollen gums and sometimes a white creamy discharge from above the gums. Dark brown discoloration of the teeth means

bacteria, swollen gums mean inflammation, and that creamy discharge is an abscess, or infection, in the bone around the tooth. Teeth need to be cleaned and assessed under full anesthetic in order to provide a proper examination and to clean the teeth below the gum line, where most of the problems are located. In general, older dogs need to have annual physical exams and an assessment of their teeth, urine and blood. Your veterinarian can provide information on proper nutrition in aging animals and how to proceed with your dog’s healthcare as he or she ages. Next time we will be starting a whole new series, so tune in to find out where we are heading next!

80+and Going Strong

Never mind 60+ and going strong, our recently appointed inaugural poet laureate, Naomi Beth Wakan is not only going strong, but has committed herself to a three-year term during which she will be encouraging not just poetry, but the joy of reading and writing in the Nanaimo Regional District. Naomi has written over 50 books (23 in the Vancouver Island Regional Library System) and, since she herself started writing professionally late in life, is a great encourager of the “late bloomer”. Of the creative process, Naomi says, “As a human being, I rejoice at the wonder that words have come forth and attempts have been made to express feelings and deep emotions. It is not easy to expose yourself, and each small piece of writing does reveal something of the writer.” She is in awe of the creative act and even though she has written so many books of essays and poetry, Naomi is still speaking to her audiences about the mystery of getting words onto paper, and encouraging them to do so. When asked why, Naomi replied, “What is earth-shaking about the creative act is that something new is appearing, some linking of ideas, concepts, images that has never happened before, at least not to you. That is why I love to speak to as many people as possible in order to support them in their writing efforts, for writing can be such a lonely occupation.” As part of her mandate as poet laureate, she will be offering workshops and readings at the Nanaimo Museum and at various libraries in the district. Check the Nanaimo City website and the VIRL calendar for events where she will be appearing. As she says, “Late middle age is not when you prepare to live in a gated-community, late middleage is when you open the gates of your creativity

It is not easy to expose yourself, and each small piece of writing does reveal something of the writer. and watch with joy (and maybe surprise) at what you are capable of producing.” Article Submitted by Bob Kuhn Manager, Culture and Heritage, City of Nanaimo Bob.Kuhn@nanaimo.ca

- No extreme equipment necessary and can be done anywhere - Can easily suit many different people needs - It increases mobility in your joints - It's a way to change your workouts, adding both challenge and intensity Plyometric training Requires strength and endurance, so make sure you build both with a complete program of both cardio and strength training before you try it. This type of training should be done when you're fresh, not when you're already fatigued, and should be followed by a day of rest to let your body repair and recover. Again, being cautious and doing basic exercises at first can help you ease your way into plyometric training. Now, how can you incorporate plyo into your routine? Start slow its best to work your way up to high intensity training. You could start by adding in at the end of your regular training, for example; 25 jumping jacks fast, 10 burpees and finish with 10 squat jumps (squat jumps are squat down and jump up as high and as fast as you can and slapping both knees at top). If you are unsure about plyometric training and trying on your own. I run a 10 week workout challenge that consists of : - Learning how eat properly - Learning how to workout anywhere with plyometrics and other exercises - Training with me 2x per week. - Home workouts emailed out weekly to stay on track. - Full sets of body fat testing and girth measurements to make sure you are meeting your goals.

Over 2300 Grade 4 Students and their teachers attended the Vancouver Island Symphony's new education show entitled MY Symphony with award winning Children's Entertainer Rick Scott on Feb 13 at The Port Theatre. The show written by Protection Island residents, Rick Scott and Valley Hennell and orchestrated by Nanaimo resident Nico Rhodes was a huge hit with both students and teachers. The audience was mesmerized by the Symphony and what would happen to Rick in his quest to perform in the orchestra. Rick was backed up by a 45 piece orchestra and a

Grade 4 Students from Ladysmith, Gabriola, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Comox and Campbell River attended the MY SYMPHONY show. Schools in Nanaimo had a visit from a Symphony musician at their school before the performance as part of the Vancouver Island Symphony's Send a Symphony Musician to School Program. School Districts pay $1 per person plus bussing and the Symphony raises the additional funds needed for children to hear the Symphony. This is the first year of a three year partnership with School Districts on Vancouver Island.

Interview with

Liona Boyd Liona Boyd recently released a new album (her 23rd) called “The Return… to Canada with Love” which was inspired by Liona’s return to her homeland after spending the last twenty years living in the USA. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Liona Boyd who will be performing at the Port Theatre March 9th, accompanied by singer/guitarist, Michael Savona. It was an honour that Ms. Boyd granted this interview exclusively for the Rideout Communications publication: Whats On Nanaimo. I grew up listening to and playing the classical guitar, so the opportunity to speak with such an icon of the genre was both enjoyable and humbling SR: Do you reflect on your movement from the more formal, classical guitar repertoire to popular guitar and voice? When did you discover yourself as a singer? LB: Yes but it’s not that complicated and I still do include some classical pieces in my programs. I’ve really always had one foot in popular music. Even when it wasn’t considered by some the traditional path I have in the past enjoyed performing as the opening act for Gordon Lightfoot and Tracey Chapman. It’s funny, the Spanish virtuoso, one of my teachers, Andrés Segovia, once wrote out a quote “To the Liona of the guitar who with her beauty and talent

by Simon Rideout

will conquer the public, philharmonic or not” which I thought quite perceptive of him! So my love of popular music along with classical has always been a part of who I am. The singing is something I used to dream of doing and I’m thrilled now by how much people like my voice. SR: You have such natural magnetism and grace. You really have brought classical music out into the light in a way that may not have been necessarily achievable for others. What do you think about that? LB: (*...laughing) Well I did hundreds of TV shows and music videos all over the world, wrote a best selling autobiography and I’m sure sitting partially clad atop a white horse on one of my earlier album covers certainly did help make me an ambassador in the genre, as it instantly went platinum! I also put out an album of movie themes which became very popular. I guess I’ve just never been shy about promoting the things I believe in and it truly is a blessing that my wonderful audiences have remained faithful no matter what new styles I introduce. SR: There is a saying that "everyone comes home again." Did you find that returning to your roots the country where you are revered and have been honoured with several doctorates, medals and five Juno awards was the inspiration to make this recent album? LB: Yes absolutely! The song “Canada My Canada was written, in part, because I was determined to write both about and for Canada. I worked very hard on this album with Peter Bond, my brilliant producer. The goal was to capture the spirit of Canada as vast and varied as it is. Some have described the album as “Enya meets Leonard Cohen” (laughs). There’s a song about Emily Carr and her link to Vancouver Island. I wrote songs about returning to the shores of Lake Ontario, and paid homage to the Aurora Borealis, the Arctic and the Maritimes. There are also three autobiographical songs included. SR: It really seems like you have an unbreakable connection with this country and it comes through in your music.

LB: Sometimes, through the course of my life I’ve felt as if I’m a bit of a “global orphan” the feeling that I’ve lived everywhere, yet belong nowhere. But truly I think there is a very basic link, a connection to Canada my home, that will never leave me. Yes, I feel fortunate in the sense that the world has always been my playground. I’m still very active, and in fact we’re planning dates in France and Korea. SR: What was it like working with so many respected Canadian artists on this latest album? LB: It really was very exciting and a lot of fun, but a lot of work and took two years to complete. This album sprung from my crazy vision that I wanted to do a “We Are The World” meets “Tears Are Not Enough” patriotic song for Canada. I connected with people who I thought would be the best to contribute to this project. The list of highlights is long, but one for sure was having the iconic members of the 1972 Summit Hockey Series come together to sing a chorus on “Canada My Canada.” Even Ron McLean sings on this album as well as Serena Ryder, Dan Hill, Chris Hadfield, Randy Bachman and Olivia Newton-John. It’s a very unique and very Canadian album. SR: What are your thoughts as to how to get younger kids into playing and learning music? LB: One thing is to bring them to concerts. My mother took me to a concert which motivated me to take up the guitar at age 13. Kids will naturally gravitate to the instruments they are fond of. It’s important not to push it, but it is good to expose them to live music. Sadly classical music has been taken out of many schools, but it’s the parents who can make the biggest impact. SR: Your concert in Nanaimo is at the Port Theatre March 9th at 7:30PM. I look forward to seeing you perform and will be sure to say hello! LB: Yes thank you! I’ve often played up and down the island in the past and am very much looking forward to returning. To learn more about Liona Boyd visit her Website, “like” her on Facebook & follow her on Twitter. The grocer walked over and, trying to be friendly, asked the boy if he had a lot of laundry to do. “Oh, no laundry,” the boy said. “I’m going to wash my dog.” “But you shouldn’t use this to wash your dog. It’s very powerful and if you wash your dog in this, he’ll get sick. In fact, it might even kill him.” But the boy was not stopped by this and carried the detergent to the counter and paid for it, even as the grocer still tried to talk him out of washing his dog. About a week later the boy was back in the store shopping. The grocer asked the boy how his dog was doing. “Oh, he died,” the boy said. The grocer said, “I tried to tell you not to use that detergent on your dog.”

“Well,” the boy replied, “I don’t think it was the detergent that killed him.” “Oh I’m sorry. Whats n Wheels

Nanaimo Reads Whats On Wheels Last months article on texting and driving generated a very strong response. So thank you Nanaimo and thank you for reading Whats On. The emails and phone calls I received, and am still receiving, echoed my sentiment that texting when behind the wheel is a serious and pervasive problem. It seems we all agree that it’s truly unbelievable how people continue to attempt to drive while clearly focusing on the Smartphone in their lap. Yes, we all know very well what you are doing when you’re behind the wheel, trying to drive, while staring at your lap. It’s amazing but you are actually not invisible when you are behind he wheel of your car! I know right? I would seriously welcome hearing from anyone who could make app that would temporarily disable the texting feature of the Smartphone. It’s probably the only answer because like Ivan Pavlov’s German Sheppard when the bell goes ‘ding’, driving or not, a-texting we will go. Sadly, just ask any police officer or emergency worker, the real cure for texting when driving usually in-

volves an ambulance and a trip to the hospital... or morgue. If you have been reading Whats On Digest Nanaimo you may have noticed that as part of regular articles such as Whats On Wheels, I try to write about relevant driving or automobile topics. This may include when to change your tires, or the value of having a local mechanic. Last month was, of course, a bit of a rant about the perils of texting and driving. One thing I have decided to do is to open up the column of Whats On Wheels to you! Tell me your favorite drive in Nanaimo, tell me your favorite local auto repair shop or tire store. Rant if you have to! If it’s related to driving and it’s about Nanaimo or greater Nanaimo region I’d love to hear your stories. In fact it doesn’t even need to be about driving. If it has ‘wheels’ it could be the story du jour in Whats On Wheels! Article by Simon Rideout Office: 250-585-3452 events@rideoutcommunications.com

Chronic Recurring Back Pain: Is there any hope? I would like to share with you the most common story I hear in my office. The story goes something like this… “I am sick and tired of my low back pain! Two years ago I bent over to pick up the newspaper and my back went out. It lasted two days until I saw a massage therapist. Six months later I was washing my car and it happened again. This time I dropped to the ground in pain. A physiotherapist used some laser therapy with exercises and my pain was gone in two weeks. But two months later I was putting on my socks and it happened again. This time the pain radiated down my leg and I missed a week of work. My doctor suggested I see a chiropractor who adjusted me and gave me some exercises. My back has been great until I stepped out of my car yesterday. I have been in agony since.” This story may sound familiar because low back pain afflicts 60% of Canadians. That is more than half of us! But does that make it normal?

So if you are interested in exploring the reasons behind your chronic pain we are offering What’s On readers a complimentary consultation during March. Simply call our office and mention this ad. I hope to hear from you soon. Your health is worth it! Yours in health Dr. Glen Reed

Feel Well · Be Well · Live Well

Chiropractic · Acupuncture Naturopathic Medicine

If you think it is, you are best to continue your search for various treatments each time your ‘normal’ low back returns. But we don’t agree. The reason we are referred such a large number of chronic cases is because we think differently. We see your low back pain as a symptom of ill health. So instead of offering more laser, massage, or chiropractic adjustments we look at your lifestyle. Perhaps 60% of us suffer from back pain because 60% of us sit at a desk for 8 hours, are 15-20 pounds overweight, or ingest toxins such as bread, coffee, cereal and the like. Only after we uncover the reason for your shift from optimal health can we take measures to correct it. And the beautiful thing about restoring optimal health? Your low back pain goes away - for good!

Taxman’s Knocking On Your Door? Struggling to keep up with your personal income tax or your GST remittances? You’ll be relieved, and probably surprised, that there are options for dealing with debt to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). As creditors go, CRA is unique. In order to receive credit from most institutions you are required to fill out an application and are then approved. With CRA credit is not obtained through an application process, it is obtained merely through the default. CRA is known to be quite ruthless. They can collect the outstanding taxes by withholding your tax refunds and GST Credits, garnish your wages, take funds from your bank account and/or place a lien on any real property you own until your debt is paid in full. Unlike other creditors, they do not have to go through the Courts to do this and, therefore, can act very quickly. There are four options for dealing with CRA: 1. Pay your taxes in full, 2. Negotiate payment terms, 3. File a Consumer Proposal, or 4. File for bankruptcy. If you are unable to pay your outstanding taxes in full, often the best option is the Consumer Proposal. CRA will not negotiate a reduced settlement unless you file a Consumer Proposal. A Consumer Proposal is a legal process under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act that enables you to make an offer to all your creditors for a portion of what you owe. A proposal allows you to settle your debts without going bankrupt. It is important to seek professional help in preparing a proposal to CRA as it is essential to meet all their requirements including convincing them that the proposal is the best deal possible and that it will result in a greater return to them than a Bankruptcy.

If you are unable to pay your outstanding taxes in full, often the best option is the Consumer Proposal.

Your Computer Guy

Article by Steve Duckett

Welcome and thank you for reading my first column for Whats On Digest Nanaimo. You may have heard, or perhaps you didn’t but fact remains, on April 8, 2014 Microsoft is shutting down support for the XP operating system. As of this date technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available. This includes all automatic updates used to help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for XP on this date. If you continue to use XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it may become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for supported versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that won’t work with your old Windows XP. What to do? Simple: update your computer to the Windows 7 operating system (OS). Bitrate Computer Services Nanaimo is offering (for a limited time) Windows 7 Pro installed for 160.00, this includes transferring all your data and updates. Quantities are limited so if you’re thinking about doing it...don’t delay call Bitrate today.

SimonSays March is all about Women.

It’s important to recognize all the wonderful women in our lives from our grandmothers, mothers and wives to our sisters, nieces and friends. On a day to day level I say we all need to think in terms of how we want the women in our lives to be treated in society. Each person can make the choice to treat the women in their lives in a way that respects the very important and equal role women do, and should, have in our lives and in the world. Gender is one of those human condition elements that defines us like nothing else. No doubt it is often very difficult for many women and girls to rise above gender stereotypes.
