it is her first time performing at the Village Theatre and although this is the most dialogue she has ever had to prepare for she is thrilled to play the role of an aging author with a romantic past. Kelly admitted that learning the dialogue involves a daily discipline because you are relying on the other actor and you are only as good as what you bring to the table. “Because it is a play about relationships it is so important to use the dialogue as a way for the audience to understand how they grow together,” said Kelly. Margulies doesn’t take sides in the moral dilemma he has written about and Kelly agreed that is the beautiful thing about the play. “It is that artistic license and the betrayal can be seen either way and it’s really for the audience to decide. We haven’t victimized or villainized anybody because I don’t think that is the intention of the playwright,” said Kelly. Murguly said there is a lot of humour in the play especially from the character DeVolder plays.
“Ruth is a feisty complex character who cracks wise and gets away with saying just about anything,” said Murguly. DeVolder agreed that Ruth has many layers. “I kind of see myself as a mixture of Joan Rivers and then a romantic heroin like Jane Eyre because I am so romantic on the one side and love poetry and love words and then the off the cuff almost brashness of a Joan Rivers” Collected Stories opens April 19 at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EXPO HELP PREPARE IN ADVANCE OF AN EMERGENCY.
hey strike without warning and can cause catastrophic damage but earthquakes can be less deadly if people are prepared for the big one.
T
More than thirty first responders, government agencies, emergency supply vendors, utilities and emergency partners will host a variety of activities that emphasize the importance of taking steps to improve emergency preparedness and response.
Some knowledge and a few precautionary measures can increase your chances With displays, demonstrations and of surviving an earthquake ‌ or any workshops the event will focus on the natural disaster challenges we face and the Oceanside in an emergency "The more we can get people and how to be Emergency prepared for an emergency, the Preparedness Expo better prepared. on Saturday, April sooner we can return to the new City of Parksville 28 can help prepare Emergency normal." in advance of an Program Director Aaron Dawson ~ Emergency Program Director emergency. Aaron Dawson The free educational expo at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 28 Hosted by Emergency Management Oceanside (Town of Qualicum Beach, City of Parksville and Regional District of Nanaimo) the day long event offers something for everyone.
agreed that while disasters may be beyond our control, there are ways to reduce the risk and the impact of whatever emergency we might face. A major earthquake can do a lot of damage and Dawson said if one strikes here, Island residents may have to fend for themselves before help arrives.
“A lot of people think we are going to land in their driveway and rescue them if something serious happens. The first thing we are going to do is make it safe for first responders so they can do their job,” he explained and added, “The more we can get people prepared for an emergency, the sooner we can return to the new normal.” This is the fourth annual expo for Oceanside and Dawson said every year it gets bigger and better. “It started off with just 12 exhibitors and it was popular. Now we have up to 40 exhibitors because we want to offer a broad range of information to people,” he said. People can experience the Shake Zone, Canada’s only mobile earthquake simulator. It provides an experience of what it would be like to go through a major earthquake, while in a safe, controlled environment. Shake Zone simulates the motion, ground force acceleration, S-Wave action, and sound of a large-scale, magnitude 8.0 earthquake. During the simulation, there is a video of a dramatized earthquake, realistic rumble
sounds, as well as an ability to experience the potential hazards of falling objects and Dawson said it is an eye opener. “We have had it here before and we had massive positive response to it. It is the A-Ha moment for many people … they go ‘I get it now’,” he emphasized. There will be free drop-in workshops as well as half-day workshops where registration is required by emailing: emergencyservices@rdn.bc.ca or calling 250-390-6759. A pancake breakfast and BBQ lunch served by the Shriners will be available on site during the day. MORE INFORMATION

BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS HONOURING SOME OUTSTANDING BUSINESS MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY
he Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce honoured some outstanding business members of the community last month. The Parksville and District Business Achievement Awards recognize individuals and businesses that have demonstrated business excellence and outstanding customer service. “Our goal this year was to re-invent the Business Awards and we did that in spades,” said Kim Burden, Executive Director, Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce. “We had a record number of nominations, lots of interest from the community, great publicity and a sold out awards ceremony.” There were seven awards presented including the first Community Spirit
T
Award which went to Renate Sutherland, former executive director of the Society of Organized Services (SOS). The new award was created this year to recognize a business or individual that demonstrated exceptional commitment to developing and encouraging community spirit and pride. The Service Excellence Award went to Angela Giannotti of CruiseShipCenters. The Small Business of the Year Award was presented to Namaskar Yoga Studio. The Large Business of the Year Award went to Eat Fresh Urban Market. Kiyo Salon & Boutique was awarded Outstanding Workplace – Employer of the Year. Young Professional of the Year was Meaghan L’Heureux of Iron Warehouse. Not for Profit of the Year was presented to Forward House Community Society.

LARGE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Eat Fresh Urban Market which was recognized in the category for businesses with more than 15 employees opened its doors in June, 2014 and since then the store has gained quite a following of savvy shoppers and foodies. Owners Clayton and Sally Baker are passionate about food and people and when they decided to open their market at 164 Bagshaw in Parksville the idea was to return to their roots – the days when you could walk into your local grocery store and talk to your butcher and see your baker making the pastries from scratch. “It is important to us that you are able to purchase products that are made and grown locally in your community,” said Clayton who added, “When we opened our plan was to bring in as much local as possible and go for top quality products where you are able to read the label on something and know exactly what is in it.” When staff members make suggestions the Bakers run with it and some of their items in the bakery and deli come from recipes their employees offered up. Clayton said they have an advantage over the big grocery chains and being the small guy allows them to try new things and implement them right away. “We are like a speed boat and the bigger companies are like freighters that take five miles to plan and turn and go in a different direction.” With talented chefs who use fresh local ingredients, the deli department is impressive and everything is made fresh on site which Sally said their customers appreciate. “We are small for quality control and we can make everything from scratch. We don’t have to bring in products that are pre-made somewhere else with chemicals and preservatives. We can make it here,” acknowledged Sally.
Clayton said his kitchen team is top notch are they are consistently creating delicious gourmet dishes and salads. “We have seven chefs. All except one are Red Seals and the one that isn’t … she is as good as or better than the average chef,” Clayton boasted. So what’s next for Eat Fresh? If you have a sweet tooth you will be pleased to know they are expanding their bakery department with plans to be open before summer rolls around. By taking over the space once occupied by Pizza Hut, Clayton said it will allow them to have 50% more store and he stated that with the new room they are taking the bakery

department to the next level. “We will be the one stop shop for birthday cakes, fancy occasion cakes and pies … all home made. We will also have more breads and pastries but made without chemicals.” Clayton admitted he likes to be the quality control guy when it comes to taste testing the new bakery items. “I am company president and quality checker. Sometimes I bring my grandchildren in and say do you want to go do quality checking in the bakery?” The Bakers say they are grateful for receiving the award and give credit to all of their staff members for the hard work and creativity they bring to the store.
