DOWNTOWN QUALICUM BEACH
CHRISTMA Villa g e in the
Kick-off the Christmas Season in Downtown Qu by Brenda Gough
A
fun day for children and families is taking place Sunday, Dec. 9 in Qualicum Beach as Christmas in the Village welcomes Santa Claus. The festivities start at 9 a.m. with a breakfast with Santa at Bailey’s in the Village. Tickets for the event are $5.95 and can be purchased at the restaurant located at 670 Primrose Street. Santa will then head out into the streets of downtown Qualicum Beach where there will also be some clowns meeting and greeting the public. Last year, Royal LePage realtor Matt Breedlove portrayed old St. Nick and because he had such a great time performing the job, he has agreed to wear the red suit again this year. Breedlove said when he volunteered for the important role last year he wasn’t sure
what to expect but he got a kick out of spreading the happiness and good feelings of Christmas so much that he is donning the Santa suit again. “I really enjoyed walking the streets of the Village with my bell and approaching every one of all ages spreading the Christmas cheer.” He revealed that he also enjoyed seeing the look in kids’ eyes when they were sitting on his lap. “They looked at me like I was the real Santa. I would usually say something like what is your name and they would tell me and then I would say I have a name just like that on my good boy or girl list … is that you? They would shake their heads up and down and tell me yes that is me and they would mean it with all their heart and soul. It was really neat to see,” he exclaimed. With so many children these days connected to social media, one would assume
that the legend of Santa may be waning but Breedlove said as far as he can tell most of the young kids he has talked to still believe. “I don't recall too many who would reveal their disbelief. If they did I would have reacted with a big Ho! Ho! Ho! and told them to wait and see what happened on Christmas morning.” Kids can say the dandiest things and Breedlove agreed he’s heard some of the whoppers performing his Santa duties. “I think the most unusual gift request was from one little boy asking me if I could make sure that his older brother would let him play with his stuff and let him hang out with him and his friends,” Breedlove recalled. If you can’t make it for breakfast with Santa you can still get a photo with Santa at Qualicum Beach Pharmasave from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Throughout the day there

SOS HAS A GOAL TO SEE THAT NONE ARE FORGOTTEN AT CHRISTMAS... by Society of Organized Services
I
n 1968, concerned community groups called upon the Society of Organized Services to coordinate a Christmas program to help the less fortunate throughout District 69. 44 years later, SOS continues to offer this vital support to local residents. Who are these individuals seeking help? Those down on ttheir luck, unemployed, undereemployed, struck by illness, hit by sudden financial burden, b or facing the loss of loved ones. With the costs of food, rent, and gas skyrocketing, more and more people find it impossible to make ends meet, let alone afford more than the very basic necessities. While many struggle through silently, even the very proud will reach out for help at this time of year. Nobody wants to see a child go without a Christmas, or a neighbour face the day alone. SOS has a goal to see that none are forgotten at Christmas. Each year, hundreds from the surrounding communities visit the SOS Toy Shop to hand-pick
20 whatsondigest.com
gifts for their children. Great effort is made to respect the dignity of all visitors. A lovely reception room is decorated, and baked treats and beverages are offered to all as they wait to choose their gifts. While children are the focus of attention, SOS is aware that this can be a very lonely time of year for many adults. Treat-filled Christmas stockings are delivered to those without close friends or family. These stockings are the only bit of Christmas many receive, and they are accepted with great joy and appreciation. Caring is a priceless gift to those who feel they are alone in the world. All of this cannot be accomplished without community support. Local media, groups, businesses, volunteers, and cash donations from individuals all combine to make the Caring for Kids at Christmas program successful. This truly is a community-owned program. Last year thousands of gifts were gathered and over $102,000 in cash donations were received from the community. All of this and more was used to help more than 2,000 local residents have a happy Christmas. Each year, the number of individuals seeking help at Christmas rises. This year should be no exception.
With the hope that all who come will receive help, SOS has set a goal of $110,000 for the Caring for Kids at Christmas program. The need is great, but SOS has faith in the compassion of our local communities. Once again, SOS is very proud to represent communities from Nanoose to Bowser, and Errington to Lasqueti, who step up to take care of their own. May this year be another Merry Christmas for all. For those needing help this Christmas, program registrations begins on November 19, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm., at 245 West Hirst Avenue in Parksville. Monetary donations can be mailed in, or dropped of at the SOS Child, Youth & Family Centre, 245 West Hirst Avenue in Parksville. Call 250-248-2093 for more information. For those wishing to donate unwrapped gifts, SOS is encouraging books and gifts for teens. Every year, gifts for this age group fall short of the need. We recommend that shoppers inquire at local retailers as to what’s popular with young teens this year. Heartfelt thanks go out to the friends of SOS, and we wish a very, merry Christmas to all.

Milner Christmas Magic Celebrate the Magic of Christmas at Milner Gardens & Woodlands by Brenda Gough
One of the areas brightest family favourite events – Milner Christmas Magic, is lighting up the winter nights with the help of more than 50,000 light bulbs. Milner Gardens and Woodland has created some old fashioned Christmas splendour for their twelve day festival at the 70 acre estate in Qualicum Beach. The gardens and pathways adorned with thousands of lights will sparkle and shine until December 19. The popular holiday tradition of lights, music and magic in the gardens first
started in 2003 and since then the event has continued to grow and evolve thanks to a phenomenal network of community volunteers and Milner staff. Geoff Ball, Executive Director of Milner Gardens says it’s an incredible team effort with a large crew of volunteers tirelessly working together to create a magical Christmas event for all to enjoy. He stated that close to 20 volunteers started back in September just setting up the lights and each night they are open there will be at least 18
volunteers across the sight. “Over 1000 volunteer hours have gone into the event. We have a great team of committed volunteers but we are always on the lookout for people who want to be involved,” he indicated. Last year crews used at least 50,000 lights bulbs to deck the buildings and gardens and the effect was very dramatic. This year Ball said the embellishments have been expanded and the event will be bigger and better. “I have lost count of how many light bulbs there are … ➤

I know I bought a heck of a lot more. There are new features and some areas have been re-tweaked so people who have been here year after year will find a lot of new fun things,” he admitted. The festival of lights, music and magic is about more than just light displays. Volunteers from the Vancouver Island Regional Library will be on site with their festive storytelling and Santa will also be attending the festival.
The Teddy Bear Cottage is also a hit for both generations with antique collectibles as well as soft and cuddly critters on display. Children are invited to guess the number of bears in the gardener’s cottage and someone will win a furry surprise. The gift shops will be open for browsing and stocking up on those special presents including Milner’s specialty homemade jams and jellies. The festival wouldn’t be complete without the

fabulous m mu musici musicians gracing the gardens garde with choral and instrumental music. A schedule of this year’s entertainment can be found on the Milner website. The Tearoom will be open serving up scrumptious scones with Devonshire cream and other freshly baked goodies as well as other light snacks will be available on site to satisfy your holiday cravings. There will be shuttles for those with mobility concerns and it’s a good idea to bring along a flashlight for extra light along pathways. The event goes from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 1-2, Dec. 7-9 and Dec.14-19. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to support the gardens.
