5TH ANNUAL

ARTISANS

T E K R A M

on Fern Road in Qualicum Beach

A

n exciting array of art and music in the heart of Qualicum Beach is being featured every Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. until August 30.

The summer season has begun for the Qualicum Beach Artisans Market and for the next nine weeks, the market will feature plenty of high quality crafts and hand-made art. The location of the market is right next The Old School House (TOSH) Arts Centre on Fern Road West in downtown Qualicum Beach. The juried market means a fantastic selection of quality work for those who are coming out to see what is new with the market this year. With everything from stone to pottery, glass, painting, photography, metalwork, blacksmithing and more, there is a wide range of artistic talent to view. The market has close to 30 artisans lined up for this year’s season and organizer Dee Aguilar said that after five years, they know how to put on an exciting event. “Because artists have other commitments

by Brenda Gough

during the summer every week will be a new show so you have to come to every one to see everything.” Dee’s partner, Larry Aguilar whose raku is worldrenowned, said the market is a good addition to all that happens in the Qualicum Beach, from the Saturday Farmers Market to the Thursday night Uptown Street Market. “It was a struggle to get the first Artisans Market going but after the first year we have progressed and people see it is a viable event and something the town needs,” Larry acknowledged. Dee said each participating vendor had to go through a jury process and the selection was based on quality, originality and marketability. The list of artists and musicians will change weekly and Dee pointed out the rotating format promotes collaboration as well as creativity. “The wonderful thing about celebrating the arts each week is that you get out of your own seclusion of your studio and see who is out there and make new friendships. We are

fb.com/whatsonpqb 9

really excited about this year.” She added the music line up would be stellar this year. “We have had so many bands apply. We will have the regulars but we will also have a surprise or two up our sleeves”. She said with live music and a wide range of artistic talent to view right beside TOSH, the market is a bonus for everyone because the TOSH studios are also open Friday nights until 8:00 p.m. Other exciting events planned for TOSH this month include the Grand Prix d’Art and Art in Action Craft Fair on July 27. The Grand Prix d'Art is a race of competing artists who must complete a work of art en plein air (working outside on location, not in a studio) within three hours. Past events have attracted top-notch painters and hundreds of spectators have enjoyed watching them use their various mediums between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at different locations throughout town.

TOSH Arts Centre executive director Corinne James said that July 27th will be a busy Saturday with all kinds of family activities planned for the day. The Art in Action Fair runs from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and includes music, demos by artists and other hands-on activities for kids in the parking area beside TOSH.

“…every week will be a new show so you have to come to every one to see everything.” ~ Dee Aguilar, event organizer

The Qualicum Beach Farmers Market will be relocating to the former school bus garage location that same day, while the 41st annual St. Mark’s Fair takes over the market’s location on Veteran’s Way.

rom fanciful fairies to gruesome goblins, you’re more than likely to find some of your favourite fairy tale characters at the Parkville beach for five weeks this summer. The theme for the 2013 Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition running July 13 to August 18 is sand fairies. Spokesperson Cheryl Dill said they decided to go with fairy tale folklore after soliciting input from the public. “We narrowed it down to four themes and fairy tales was the top vote so when you go through the gates this year, you will notice it has a common theme.” The world class gallery of sand sculptures at the Parksville Community Park will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily, beginning July 15. Admission to the venue is by a suggested donation of $2.50 per person. Last year the sand art exhibit attracted over 90,000 people. This year, the ever-popular Quality Foods lunch with the castles event is back. The VIP event for groups of 10 or more

CANADIAN OPEN SAND SCULPTING COMPETITION & EXHIBITION is limited to weekdays and includes a tour of the amazing sculptures and lunch underneath a canopy tent situated next to the sculptures. Master sand sculptors travel from all corners of the globe to participate in Parksville’s Beachfest, which is a qualifying event for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting The event begins with the pound up Friday July 12, when sculptors build and fill their forms. The actual competition begins Saturday July 13 at 7:30 a.m. where the public can watch from outside the gates as the sand sculptors carve creative details into their medium. At 2:00 p.m. the gated exhibition opens and the public is encouraged to watch as competitors spend two days creating artwork from just sand and water. Judging takes place on Sunday July 14 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the winners will be announced around 5:30 pm. Judges will be giving points for artistic merit, technical difficulty and the ‘wow’ factor. New this year is the introduction of a doubles category and the first place winner of that division - as well as the top soloist - wins an automatic placement in The World Championship of Sand Sculpting. Dill also announced the addition of the amateur division as a way to involve the local community in the region’s biggest event.

“We are excited to bring back the event because it is part of our roots,” Dill pointed out. She said they talked to some of the original organizers of Beachfest who indicated it was a big hit with the locals. “We want the community to actively participate and this event will provide an opportunity for those who want to be hands on.” The amateur event will be held on the actual beach during one of the lowest tides of the summer on Saturday August 3. There will be two types of teams, corporate and family/friends which will be comprised of two to six people. The corporate teams are adult only but the family and friend teams can consist of any age. Potential amateur competitors can perfect their skills during a drop-in lesson during the opening weekend on July 13 and July 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The two day drop-in session will have three professionals on hand teaching the tricks of the trade but those who want to compete in the amateur competition must register online at www.parksvillebeachfest.ca. The Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition is held at the Community Park in Parksville, located on the ocean side of Highway 19A (exit 46), on Corfield Street in the centre of town.

2nd Annual Qualicum Beach Day

L

ife’s already a beach when you live in Oceanside but on July 21 there will be a special event to celebrate the beauty of the Qualicum Beach waterfront. The second annual Beach Day promises to be a day full of family fun and music on the beach. The day begins with a Shriners' breakfast at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Kiwanis Salmon BBQ from 11:00 a.m. to closing. Beach activities run from low tide at about 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and include both educational and fun things to do. From skim boarding, beach volleyball and sandcastle building to giant bubbles and face

painting, there will be something for everyone according to spokesperson Tom Whitfield. “We designed the event for kids,” he said but added everyone in the family will find something fun to do. Local fisheries biologist Dave Clough will be on hand to teach beach seining for sea creatures and there will be live touch tanks from the VIU Shellfish Research Centre in Deep Bay. There will also be an all age’s vintage swimsuit fashion show on the beach at 11:30 a.m. Organized by Merlyn Patten who is a local expert on retro clothing, the show will feature swimwear from 1905 and everything in between

right up to modern day beach attire. Patten said the theme of this year’s show is Living the Dream in Qualicum Beach and the models will wear wedding dresses that correspond with bathing suits. Stage festivities begin at 2:00 p.m. starting with the Bomb Bomb bikini fashion show. After the models pose and strut wearing the modern bikini collection on the catwalk, the music festival begins with the QBs Got Talent music competition. The contest is new this year and will showcase some of the talented up and coming performers in the local area. In addition to the talent show, there will be solo artists, bands, dance troupes and a featured performer to headline and wrap-up the event from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Whitfield said the organizing committee agreed that the event should highlight the community’s talented musicians and they will be erecting a sound stage near the eagle tree by the visitors centre. “This year there is a larger focus on music

and the talent show is going to be fun,” he emphasized. Auditions for the contest took place in June and whoever wins will get a $500 first prize. Some 2,000 people were on hand for last year’s inaugural Beach Day and Whitfield said this year

“This year there is a larger focus on music and the talent show is going to be fun” ~ Tom Whitfield, spokesperson they hope to double that. “It rained Friday night last year and Saturday morning had blue sky but it was cloudy and wasn’t a warm beach day.” He said despite the grey sky those who did attend had a blast. Electric shuttles running between the beach and the parking areas in town will provide an alternate parking option.

JOKE A woman went to her doctor's office. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming and ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she explained. He had her sit down and relax in another room.

The older doctor marched back to the first and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?" The new doctor smiled smugly as he continued to write on his clipboard. "Cured her hiccups though, didn't it?"

SUMMER THEATRE

SEASON STARTS

This summer Bard to Broadway returns to the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach with three fabulous plays! The drowsy chaperone is the musical comedy that took Broadway by storm, winning five Tony Awards (including Best Original Score). Set in the roaring ‘20s, we have the bride who’s giving up the stage for love; her debonaire groom; gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a Latin lothario, showgirls, an aviatrix and, of course - The Drowsy Chaperone. In Sexy laundry, Alice brings Henry to a fancy hotel, hoping to put the spice back in their marriage (with the help of a “how to” sex manual!). Sometimes, even the best laid plans can backfire. Honest, heartbreaking, funny – this is a life lesson for grownups that you won’t want to miss! Guest directed by acclaimed Canadian actor Norman Browning. Some coarse language and mature scenes. little Women is a retelling of the beloved family classic. During the American Civil War, four very different sisters face hardship and adversity. This is the heartwarming story of how each meets the challenges and finds her own way. Let this enchanting tale remind you of life’s simpler virtues. Plays run from July 3 to August 17, monday through Saturday at 7.30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2.00 p.m.

Call 250-752-4470 or visit www.b2btheatre.com for more information and tickets.

Live with enthusiasm, love your family and respect everyone else . . . . . . even if they are right-handed!
