YOUTH WEEK may 1 – 7, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
Y
outh Week is a national celebration held annually with the goal of building a strong connection between young people and their communities. The event not only highlights and celebrates the many contributions that young people make to their communities, it also gives them an opportunity to participate in a variety of special events organized by their peers and other community organizations.
Between May 1 - 7, activities ranging from a sumo inspired ultimate Frisbee tournament and a youth art exhibition at the McMillan Arts Centre (The MAC) to a youth swim featuring DJ All Good will be held at various locations in and around Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN), Recreation Programmer Kelly Valade says kids and teens do a lot in the community and they will be acknowledged for all that they do with a whole week of fun activities created by youth for youth. Valade said the RDN believes that collaborative community partnerships with the common goal of enhancing youth recreation opportunities result in infinite possibilities for our young people. “It is important that young people are valued, recognized and included within their communities. The RDN has been involved in youth week since 2006. Part of the purpose is to celebrate youth and our goal is to help them organize their own events.” She said leadership students from Ballenas and Kwalikum Senior Secondary Schools have come up with a lot of great ideas for the occasion. “This all came from our leadership students. We asked them ‘what is your vision’? and they had huge input.” She said a lot of different organizations are participating in the festivities and the

community involvement has also been incredible. “I am really impressed with the commitment and level of collaboration with our community organizations. This year it is stronger than ever,” she agreed. One of the first events includes some after school games, including a street hockey challenge with members of the Oceanside RCMP and a BBQ at Ballenas with DJ Killawattz and B-Chuk laying down some beats. The Town of Qualicum Beach is hosting a Youth Appreciation Day lunch from 11:15 a.m. until noon on May 1. Valade is also excited about an event taking place at the Career Centre in Parksville on May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. “It is a really awesome free event. They are showing a movie called ‘One Week Job’. It is about Sean Aiken who did 52 jobs in 52 weeks over one year. Afterwards there will be a live Skype chat with Sean.” The event is free and includes pizza and drinks but you must pre-register for it.

MOSAIC YOUTH
TALENT SHOW may 16, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
S
ome young rising stars in the community will be in the spotlight this month for the 9th annual Mosaic Youth Talent Showcase taking place Friday, May 16, 2014.
Auditions for the Mosaic Youth Talent Show were held last month and Anderson said she saw many talented performers in a lot of artistic disciplines and she only chose the cream of the crop.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Parksville, the event will include a wide range of local talent on stage at Knox United Church in Parksville.
“The idea is to perform something and chase your dreams. I look to see if someone thinks they have what it takes. It is a chance for them to showcase their talent to the community and get a scholarship towards their art,” she said.
Local country singer Beth Marie Anderson is producing the show, which offers scholarships to those who are selected to perform. Anderson, who just turned 27 years old, performed in the first talent showcase back in 2005 and says it helped launch her singing career. Her father who is a Rotarian initiated the event when Anderson was just starting her musical pursuits as a way to promote her and other talented youth in the community. Since then, Anderson has been actively pursuing her dream of becoming a country music sensation and along they way has been encouraging others to pursue their artistic ambitions.
Anderson agreed that the Mosaic audience appreciates the high calibre of talent at the event and that is why she is selective about the songs the vocalists perform.
“I want the audience to see their passion and I want the songs to reflect that. All the kids I have heard so far have positive songs prepared.” Along with vocal performances, there will be dancing and even a 6-piece brass group from Kwalikum Senior Secondary School.

As the organizer of the show, Anderson admitted it is a big job but one that is rewarding. Not only does she have to find the talent, she has to take care of all the details including head shots, biographies, posters and the show set up. It is all in a days work for Anderson, who will also be on the bill performing in a duet
with her talented friend Erik Gow. “I want to do something special this year with Mosaic. I just wrote a song in Nashville and I have asked Erik to sing it with me. She said the brand new song is called Tonight You Win. On May 16 beginning at 7 p.m. everyone will win as talented youth dazzle on stage.
Tickets for the show are $15, with family rates for 4 or more people and can be purchased at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and at the Mulberry Bush store in Qualicum Beach.

tirade listing every problem they'd ever had over the years: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire list of unmet needs she had endured. After allowing this for a length of time, the therapist stood, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow. Silently the woman sat down. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you see to it?" "Well," he said, "I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I go fishing."

Qualicum Beach
FAMILY DAY may 25, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
S
pending quality time with family is on most people’s to-do list and with that objective, everyone is invited to join a day of family activities in Qualicum Beach on Sunday, May 25. Every year on the last Sunday in May, local area residents have come together to celebrate the community of Qualicum Beach with a day long festival. Rob Ferguson, co-chair of the planning committee for Family Day, says Qualicum Beach has been recognizing families in this event since 1976 and it demonstrates that the community is stronger than ever. “It is essential to our identity and the vibrancy of community. The focus is on volunteers and community spirit to recognize the people who make it special. The event is generously supported by the town but it would not be successful without volunteer service groups who provide vast and free and interactive activities,” he pointed out. Sponsored by the Town of Qualicum Beach and organized by a group of dedicated volunteers, the special day attracts thousands of people and Ferguson said the 2014 event will
celebrate 38 years of welcoming families to the town for a day of activities designed around family, togetherness and pride.
“It celebrates our community and in that respect it is unique. It is by the residents and for the residents of our community. Residents and visitors of all ages continue to value and enjoy this free community celebration.” The 38th annual Qualicum Beach Family Day starts with a traditional Shriner's breakfast at the Civic Centre, followed by a community parade through town at 12 noon. Head on over to the fields behind the Civic Centre between 1 - 4 p.m. for an afternoon of non-stop fun for all-ages. With interactive games, a climbing wall, bouncy slides and castles, food, music, dancing, pony rides, strolling entertainers, balloons, crafts, non-profit booths and much more there will be something for everyone and best of all, everything is free.

For those who want to cool down and burn off their pancake breakfast before all of the excitement, you can go for a free dip at the Ravensong Pool between 10 a.m. until noon. Of course nothing kicks off a celebration quite like a parade and the biggest parade of the year in Qualicum Beach musters at 11 a.m. near the fire hall. Parade judging takes place at 11:30 a.m. with categories of: Best Community Spirit, Best Float, Best Youth Participation and Best Costume. At noon, the parade travels up Second Avenue past the crowds to the Civic Centre Fields. On May 24, the night before Family Day, don’t miss the annual Quality Foods “Festival of Lights” fireworks display that will take place at dusk in front of the public beach area.
