01 Sep Sun Throughout September Moksha Yoga presents: Speak Your Peace, an international awareness campaign that seeks to expand the definition of peace each year. We reflect on peace, donate two months of Karma Funds (proceeds from Moksha Yoga's Karma donation classes) to support peaceful initiatives, and engage our voices through community action. This year Moksha Yoga has partnered with the worldwide human rights movement, Amnesty International, because of their strong connection with creating peace in the world. Our goal in September is to help raise $60,000 for Amnesty International. Look for classes in the Whats On Digest events and activities calendar. Whats On Music
Dark-pop with a southern twist of lime on the rocks! This is how Shauna McAllister describes her original music band "Jupiter Jill". Shauna moved to Nanaimo from Calgary to try and make her dreams of a music career come true. The Queens weekly jam proved to be the unlikely ticket to her blossoming success. The weekly downtown jam provided a stage and new friendships that honed her self-described 'sword of song' to create her dream sound found in Jupiter Jill. The name had to reflect the message in the music that common people 'Jill' can achieve great things if they reach for the stars (Jupiter!) Shauna was fortunate to meet Rick Salt, renowned producer and sound engineer. Rick heard Shauna singing her songs about nursing homes, Canadian outlaws and crooning cowgirls and ended up producing her first album at his iconic Lois Lane Studio's, thus giving her some big flight wings. This album landed Jupiter Jill on the music-map and is garnering her recognition as a savvy songwriter and formidable force in music. Recently Shawna was named one of Canada's top emerging artists. With upcoming album "Nevada" recorded at Broken Spiral Studio's due out this Fall. Jupiter Jill's newest record is a collection of her interesting favorite original songs like "CrackerJack" which combines a David Lynch-feel, with dark blue-grass, trance-like melodies in a tune about struggling to realize your dreams. Or like "Cowgirls" where a Klezmer circus-waltz takes us away in it's encapsulating revelries of a deceased beloved cowboy. Rocky, bluesy, country or any other way Shauna McAllister chooses. Her band Jupiter Jill fuses country with indie-rock. Jupiter Jill has landed a spot in everyone's hearts and tells a tale through song for every mind. Shauna's heart is for the people, but has a head for business as well. She handles almost all aspects of her music career and festival/show production herself, but credit's Nanaimo's open-armed, tightly-knit music community for her flash landing into the industry. Good friend, agent, manager, promoter and fellow show producer Tina Coldwell from TLC Entertainment, as well as Bert Ridley soundman, festival organizer, videographer all helped Shauna learn the ropes in the vast world that is the music business. With new single "Grayside Nursing Home" featuring a storyline about her fathers last brave battle with Parkinsons. To songs like "Gasoline" whose haunting melodies
and rock rhythm work it's way into your head as well as your morning shower singing. Jupiter Jill is about shaking it up musically, not adhering to genres and smacking boredom with panache! Shauna thinks it's really important to involve people and help foster their talents. "Some very kind people helped me out of not believing in myself and led me patiently down the road to better things. I want to do this for others now". From sweet crooning to power vocals, Jupiter Jill is sure to entertain with her dynamic stage presence, natural comedic banter and beautiful original music Jupiter Jill has surely come to us to bring a little spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. Pick up "Whats On Magazine Nanaimo" highlighting local music businesses, artists and shows and keeping you in the scoop in local music. Kismet Theatre Academy Nanaimo BC I recently had the opportunity to speak with the owner of Kismet Theatre Academy Bonnie Catterson. We talked about the environment she has created at Kismet for budding actors here in Nanaimo. Bonnie teaches the craft of acting to ages 6 - adult. She considers Kismet a community based academy with an emphasis on fostering
creativity and building confidence. The Kismet approach helps students to understand how the various elements of movement and speech contribute to character development. As such Bonnie has more of a process oriented versus performance oriented approach. In her words "People really feel like they can relax while they learn and really have fun with it." I definitely picked up on that vibe sitting with Bonnie in the studio which was a very comfortable and easy going atmosphere.

The Tour de Rock is coming! Seventeen police officers, four members of the media and a special guest have been training since the beginning of March to take part in Vancouver Island’s 2013 Cops For Cancer team. They’ll need your support as they perform thousands of kilometers of training - hills on Tuesday nights, speed work Thursdays, distance on Sundays ó before setting off Sept. 21 on the most exhausting and enriching journey of their lives. Keep an eye out for details on how you, too, can join the cops and the Canadian Cancer Society in helping children with cancer. Cops for Cancer has a huge number of fun and fantastic events coming up. Since 2000, Thrifty Foods has proudly supported the bicycle riders participating in Cops for Cancer events on Vancouver Island. Thrifty Foods also provides members of the teams with nourishing food and transportation.

How can I teach my puppy to signal that it needs to go out to eliminate? By regularly taking the dog outdoors, through the same door, to the same site, and providing rewards for proper elimination, the puppy should soon learn to head for the door each time it has to eliminate. If you recognize the signs of impending elimination and praise the puppy whenever it heads for the doorway, the behavior can be further encouraged. Puppies that have been interrupted or reprimanded on one or more occasions as they begin to eliminate indoors, may begin to try to sneak away, whine or show some form of anxiety when they feel the urge to eliminate, but cannot escape from the owner's sight. If you can pick up on these cues, and take the puppy directly to the outdoors for elimination and providing rewards reward, the puppy for proper may consistently elimination, the begin to show these signals when puppy should soon he or she needs learn to head for to eliminate, and the door each time may even begin to it has to eliminate. take you to the exit door. Further into the process, some puppies can be taught to ring a bell prior or bark to let you know it needs to go outside to eliminate. For either of these to be effective, you first must constantly supervise your puppy so you can see the signs of a full bladder or bowel (restlessness, agitation) and quickly take them to the exit location, ring the bell or get them to bark and go outside. Over time the puppy should learn that the signal would get the door open. However, do not rely on signaling until it reliably happens or the puppy will end up eliminating indoors instead.

Terry Fox Run This year as the annual Terry Fox run approaches it is my hope that Nanaimo and residents of the mid island will embrace the ideals embodied by Terry Fox (07/28/1958-06/28/1981) as a Canadian icon and a real Canadian Hero. I still very vividly recall, as an 11 year-old child, hearing that Terry Fox had died. It was a sad day and a loss very much felt by all Canadians. As school children we had been following this person named Terry Fox as he undertook and persevered for 143 days in a cross-Canada run dubbed "The Marathon of Hope". The marathon was Terry's idea to raise money and awareness of the need for cancer research. The very aggressive form of cancer brought his run to a halt and just 9 months later Terry Fox died after it spread into his lungs. Nevertheless his 'fame' resulted in a lasting legacy that has taken root around the world. When Terry began his marathon people were not really too aware of him or his cause. By the time Terry reached Ontario he was rapidly becoming a national hero and was particularly popular here in his home province of BC.
year but to do some good for our bodies and minds! Whether you run, walk, wheel or jog the Terry Fox run is a great way to get connected to your community and your country. Who knows maybe getting out and doing the Terry Fox run will help you catch some of his spirit. Terry Fox embodied the ideals of hope and perseverance even when it was against all odds. He died fighting for his life and fighting for the hope that a cure for Cancer could be found. Maybe it's not rampant but I look around and see a lot of people who appear to be unaware of their own mortality, seemingly coasting along, when they could be getting so much more out of life. I can only wonder what Terry Fox would have accomplished if his life was not cut so short. I'm pretty sure Terry Fox would never waste a moment or put something off another day. I hope that those reading this, who might otherwise stay home, will come out and join in a community event that can really make a difference. Do it for the Terry Fox foundation, do it for cancer research or do it for your health but whatever the THE TERRY FOX RUN case...just do it! Article by Simon Rideout

accomplishment and success. At present our group has 42 members, working hard to fund raise for our next trip which will happen in April of 2014. The travel club started twelve years ago with the objective of supporting individuals in our community to meet new friends, become more independent and experience new, and exciting opportunities. We believe that traveling as we do in a large group setting allows the individuals we support the companionship of their peers and the support of friends, volunteers or staff, who are familiar with, and can assist them with their needs. It is also an excellent way for our members to make lasting friendships and experience

The JOY of BUDGETING Budgeting isn’t fun. Not one bit fun. So if you like fun then you might want to stop reading right now. But budgeting is powerful and easy so maybe you should just stick around for a few more lines. Ever heard the saying: Knowledge is power!? Well, when you know your own personal numbers, that gives you a power that no one can take away. Knowing those numbers can reduce stress, increase confidence and literally change lives. Figuring out how to manage life on the money you have can be the key to happiness. That’s how powerful a budget can be. A budget isn’t a little box you have to live in; the purpose ... we fool of a budget is to understand ourselves exactly how much money you need to cover your ne- into believing cessities and how much that many of money is leftover at the end our wants are of the month. Knowing how actually needs. much is leftover after all your needs are taken care of gives you the power to decide how you’re going to spend that money. Will you save for a down payment on a home? contribute to a TFSA? buy clothes? pay off your debt? Or, perhaps, travel? And if there’s nothing leftover or, worse yet, a deficit then that gives you the power to make changes. The choices are simple: increase income or decrease spending. Knowing there’s a shortfall may be the incentive to ask for that raise, get a second job, start a side business or move on from a dead-end job. Reducing what you spend can seem impossible but that’s really because we fool ourselves into believing that many of our wants are actually needs. Needs include: food, water, clothing, shelter, medications and transportation; wants are everything else. For example, a family of four may believe they need a four bedroom house when an
affordable two bedroom condo may be the answer to making ends meet. A budget may not be fun but it’ll help you to make the best choices about how you spend your hardearned money so that you can have fun!

We ( Karin & Ziggy Hildebrandt ) used to own Nanaimo’s biggest driving school and have taught over 3000 Students in the last 20 years. Ziggy is a popular figure in the rider training world. His passion is teaching people how to ride motorcycles and he always combined riding with sightseeing , showing his students the wonderful areas around Nanaimo. The highlight were the “Sunday Rides” whereby Ziggy would take new riders up and down Nanaimo for some scenic “teaching tours”! Since partial retirement Ziggy won’t give up riding. He wants to show everybody why we are so fortunate to have a place called home here in Nanaimo and on Vancouver Island.
perfect setting and scenery we are so fortunate to live in such a varied environment - ocean-view rides, forest settings and mountains - we really have it all here in Nanaimo! WO: Do you tailor your rides according to the experience of the riders in your group? Ziggy: Yes, absolutely. We are very careful to ensure we understand the level of comfort people have before we set out. WO: In terms of safety is there strength in numbers when riding? Ziggy: Riding in a group is always safer; however it’s really about being cautious and knowing how to control what is essentially a very powerful machine. We always ride defensively and never assume anything. WO: Thank you Ziggy it’s been a pleasure chatting with you. Do you have anything you’d like to add? Ziggy: Please check out our Website for more info and follow us on Facebook!
That’s why Karin and Ziggy decided to open our guided motorcycle tour business. Sightseeing on a bike is the best way to smell, breathe and see things and who knows, maybe Ziggy will give you some safe riding tips and pointers too! (And if you haven’t been riding for a while, he will start you out in a very low traffic area.) You can choose from 150cc to 250cc and 750cc. Your pick! Call 250-758-3996 www.discoverymotorcycletours.com WO: First off I have to know what type of bike Ziggy rides? Ziggy: Of course! We have 750 Honda Spirits, 250 Yamaha Viragos and a 150 Scooter WO: Who is riding and taking your tours... locals, tourists? Ziggy: Great question - we cater to a lot of locals & yes we do see our share of tourists. Anyone can book the tours and we are happy to show them around. WO: What makes the Nanaimo area so popular with riders? Ziggy: Are you kidding? Riding on the Island is just the
