80+and Going Strong So my grandmother in Toronto just turned 99 last month. That's right 99 years old as in 1 year less than 100!!

I am personally pretty happy about this as it bodes well for my own longevity but seriously 99! I think it's more than genes at work here. It has to be attitude and engagement with life! The fact is that GrandMary (...it's what we call her) is a very active and engaged person. She's not one to stay in bed and stare at the ceiling that's for sure. In fact she recently joined a choir group which really at any age is an amazing thing to do but at 99 it's remarkable. GrandMary gets out and goes for walks and she talks to people and knows everyone's name. One thing I recall from my Psych 371 course at UBC many moons ago called "Adulthood and aging" was what we called the "Use it or lose it" phenomenon. Essentially this refers to the idea that if you don't engage your senses, your body, your brain, your social life etc. that you will lose your abilities slowly over time. If we extend this to life as a whole it becomes about having things on your "to do" list, about scheduling some time at the golf course, or doing the crossword puzzle. So good on ya GrandMary! Clearly you are "using it" and staying in the game. I hope that anyone reading this can draw inspiration from my grandmother and hopefully get out into the community and find some "Raison D'Etre" that keeps their motor running.

In fact she recently joined a choir group which really at any age is an amazing thing to do but at 99 it's remarkable.

What does a Chiropractic Adjustment do? Many of us believe that we need to see a chiropractor when our back hurts, when we have a headache, or are suffering from sciatica. While this may be true, it does not fully reflect the true science and art of chiropractic. Here is the rest of the often untold story.

chiropractor can choose to deliver an adjustment aimed at restoring the proper structure of all spinal joints to allow for proper nerve function as it relates to the control and regulation of your entire body’s physiology and health.

If you are under stress it is likely you are suffering from something a chiropractor calls a subluxation. This is an area of your spine that is not moving properly. Most often this does not cause pain. It does however, result in increased “harm” signals travelling from your spine to your brain. A subluxation also decreases the amount of healthy nerve signals travelling from your body to your brain. Scientifically this is called increased nociception and decreased proprioception.

If this article has piqued your curiosity, please feel free to attend our biweekly, complimentary health talk. You will join other individuals who are interested in changing their lives for the better! Yours in health, Dr. Glen Reed

Now let’s look at what follows. Increased nociception from subluxation can lead to: • Changes in the way your nerves function resulting in allodynia (when the lightest of touches results in pain). • A chronic increase in your body’s stress response. • Increased stress hormones such as epinepherine/norepinepherine and cortisol. • Increased heart rate, constriction of your blood vessels, and increased blood pressure. • Increased blood glucose levels, blood lipid levels, and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. • Decreased serotonin • Cellular immunity decrease as well as growth hormone and testosterone decrease. • Bone loss and muscle fibre type changes.

Feel Well · Be Well · Live Well

Chiropractic · Acupuncture Naturopathic Medicine

…and this is just to name a few. Decreased proprioception due to a subluxation can lead to: • Improper coordination of movement and balance. • A loss in homeostatic balance of cognition and learning. • Reduced organ and immune system function. The key point in all of the impressive words above is that a chiropractor may decide to adjust your spine to make your back pain go away. Or, a

Sarah Wayne Callies Sarah Wayne Callies made an indelible impression on television audiences around the world as ‘Lori Grimes’ in the acclaimed series “The Walking Dead,” and ‘Dr. Sara Tancredi’ in “Prison Break.” Other television appearances include “House,” “Queens Supreme,” “Tarzan,” “Law and Order: SVU,” “Numb3rs,” “The Secret Service,” “LA Dragnet,” and “Tangled” which she coproduced. Feature credits include “Black November,” the first film ever to be screened for the United Nations General Assembly; as well as “The Celestine Prophecy, ” “Foreverland,” “Whisper,” “Faces in the Crowd,” “Lullaby for Pi,” in which she also sings an original song for the soundtrack. Upcoming feature projects include appearing as ‘Alison Stone’ in the Warner Brothers film “Into The Storm”

I got to know spotlight academy through Jacqui. We met on the set of 'whisper' years ago and we've been friends ever since.

and as ‘Maria’ in the Fox International film “The Other Side of the Door.” Currently Callies has two film scripts in development as a writer. Other writing has appeared on the “Huffington Post” as dispatches from her field work in Myanmar, Jordan, and Iraq with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as a Voice for the organization. Callies holds an MFA from the National Theatre Conservatory as well as a BA and Senior Fellowship from Dartmouth College. Jacqui Kaese of Spotlight Academy Nanaimo and Sarah Wayne Callies first met when they worked together on a psychological thriller called 'Whisper' directed by Stewart Hendler. Sarah's lead character played opposite Joel Edgerton (Great Gatsby) and Josh Holloway (Lost) Jacqui was on the set as an acting coach for child star Blake Woodruff and Erika Shaye Gair. Jacqui and Sarah became friends and have stayed in touch ever since. Jacqui shared stories of the region and the beauty of Vancouver Island with Sarah. Recently Sarah agreed to share her expertise as a lead player in a highly competitive field by presenting an exclusive workshop for Spotlight Academy locally in the Nanaimo region on September 27th, 2014. Jacqui is simply ecstatic to have Sarah in her life both personally and professionally. Thanks to Jacqui, the publisher of What’s On Digest Nanaimo, Simon Rideout, was fortunate to be able to interview Sarah Wayne Callies. Rideout: What is your connection to Nanaimo and you experience with Spotlight academy? Callies: I got to know spotlight academy through Jacqui. We met on the set of 'whisper' years ago and we've been friends ever since. She was coaching a young actor on the set and her work made all the difference with him..... Rideout: What are some highlights of your career and can you tell us what you are working on next?

There's no substitute for hard work. Acting is a craft, and if you approach is with the technical discipline of an artisan you can learn from every experience. Callies: 'Into the storm' released Aug. 8 in North America and will continue to roll out world-wide right though mid September. I just returned from Mumbai where I shot a film called 'The other side of the door.' I also have a few feature scripts in development that i wrote, so it's been a busy time. Rideout: What would you say some of the most helpful skills you learned as an up and comer that you rely on the most while acting? Callies: There's no substitute for hard work. Acting is a craft, and if you approach it with the technical discipline of an artisan you can learn from every experience. There’s also no place for ego in what we do. Vanity is the enemy of creativity.

Basically it's all about being real in a moment but each actor uses different techniques or 'methods'. I teach a combination of them all as a coach but each actor uses what works for them to make a connection to their character.

Rideout: For the viewing audience the experiences you portray on the screen feel very real. How do you stay focused when doing a scene and thus add to the viewer experience? Jacqui Kaese: Let me try to answer that one as a coach. Basically it's all about being real in a moment but each actor uses different techniques or 'methods'. I teach a combination of them all as a coach but each actor uses what works for them to make a connection to their character. Rideout: In the "Walking Dead" were there things the cast and crew would do to keep things light or was it just all business? Callies: It was a great family on the Walking Dead. We kept each other going through the heat and bugs and exhaustion of it all. Especially that second season was a real challenge but everyone was amazing at staying focused and positive for one another.

Rideout: You have so many fans here in Nanaimo and throughout the region. Have you any plans to visit and if so what sort of things do you like to do? Callies: I love it on the island... between the hiking and the swimming and the foraging there's never a a dull moment. I love to be outside, and I love to visit farmer's markets and to grow my own food. Vancouver Island is one of the best places in the world for all of that. Rideout: What sort of genre interests you most? Are you a horror fan?

Callies: I don't watch horror, actually - I find it too scary! Callies: I don't watch horror, actually - I find it too scary! That said, I think the genre has evolved tremendously in the last few years, and it's coming into its own artistically in really extraordinary ways. Rideout: I would like to personally thank you for doing this interview and I wish you all the best in the future! Callies: You're welcome! Interview by Simon Rideout.

I recently made the rookie mistake of putting 2 full "growlers" from Nanaimo's own Wolf Brewing in the back seat of my TDI. The Learner Profile - The Heart of an IB Education Aspengrove School is one of thousands of schools that teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum round the world but one of only a few in Canada authorized to do so in all grades from junior kindergarten through to graduation. You may have heard that it is challenging, or that it is recognized by universities around the world. But what is IB all about, really? When you want to understand the core values of a company you turn to their mission statement, the purpose and values that back everything they do. For Nike it is "To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world." It is intended to guide employees every day and with every key decision. While all Aspengrove students graduate with the same BC Dogwood Diploma that other students in the province will receive, they also work towards the IB DIploma, an internationally-recognized qualification based on a curriculum taught around the world. IB schools are linked not only in the

broad-based and challenging curriculum that emphasizes interdisciplinary learning but they are also linked in their values and their mission. The equivalent of a mission statement for all IB schools lies in the "Learner Profile" that translates that mission into a set of learning outcomes for all students. The learner profile is a part of the everyday language used in all IB classrooms from junior kindergarten through to grade 12. It promotes attitudes and characteristics in students that develop international mindedness while guiding the day to day actions of both staff and students. The Learner Profile states that, The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. IB learners strive to be: Inquirers · Knowledgeable · Thinkers Communicators · Principled · Open-minded Caring · Risk-takers · Balanced · Reflective There are, of course, more detailed descriptions in the IB Learner Profile that explain exactly what is meant by each of these terms and you will hear them woven into the everyday language of students in all grades from the classroom to the playground. While mission statements often seem lofty and beyond the day to day of a company, the words in the learner profile speak to what happens in an IB classroom every day and in every lesson. First and foremost students are inquirers. Consider what IB schools say about being an inquirer:

horrors and joys of this world are sometimes just too much even for a poet to tell of. He is being modest, of course, because this semi-retired street musician, and dedicated poet, has enormous talent that he has used over the years to defend the under-dog; proclaim his zest for life; and yes, tell of distress almost beyond telling, and of joy too. Poetry is a condensed form of expression that tries to cram universal experiences into a few lines. If the words are chosen carefully, poets can précis the highs and lows of human nature in a form that resonates with their readers. Tim, with his flowing beard and rosy cheeks is a familiar finger to Nanaimo folks as he toots his tin whistle, with his little dog at his feet, at the Diana Krall Plaza. He has been writing poetry for over forty years and is one of Nanaimo’s not so hidden treasures.

SUE'S TW0

STUDENT LOANS CAN BE A DEBT SENTENCE There’s no question, student debt is on the rise in Canada. The average debt level for students graduating from post-secondary education hovers around $27,000. The combined student loan debt load for the nation sits close to $15 Million – larger than the provincial debt of some provinces. These numbers don’t include the other debts incurred such as family loans, credit cards and lines of credit. It’s obvious that for many the financial burden of education is overwhelming. With interest rates sitting at Prime plus 5%, on average it takes Canadians 14 years to pay back their student loans. In this time they fall behind in reaching milestones of life such as a new car, marriage, first home and children. The added burden of the student loan payment means that reaching these milestones at the same time as their working counterparts isn’t feasible. I was always taught that an education was priceless and that I would be rewarded for my years at school with a great paying job. However, it seems that the value that many students get for their student loan dollars hasn’t been wisely invested in providing an education that will provide a good living. The only payoff many students receive for their long years of study is a job paying only minimum wage, hardly a sound investment in time or money. Sadly, default rates on Student Loans sit around 10%. Student Loans are a unique type of debt in that unlike other personal loans they cannot be forgiven within the first 7 years. What this means is that those who are unable to meet their finan-

PET TIP Pets and Obesity

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb, Applecross Veterinary Hospital

I thought I would switch gears this month, in response to a comment I had in an exam last week. I had an obviously obese little dog, and was discussing with the owner how we could help her friend get a more healthy lifestyle. She looked at me and said that she knew the dog was overweight and saw no reason why he shouldn't stay that way. He was round and jolly. This isn't the first time I have heard this, and it probably won't be the last. But I realized that I have an opportunity to reach the people who read this article to explain what it means to have an overweight pet. Our goal for the next few articles is to look at how to find out if your pet is obese, how to determine an ideal weight for your pet, what diseases are related to obesity, and what you can do to help your pet loose those extra pounds. The first step is obviously going to be to find out if your pet is actually overweight. The way I determine body condition is to feel the ribs as they curve over the side of your pet. They should feel like the back of your fingers when you make a fist. Not the knuckles, if you're feeling that your friend is too thin. Not the inside of your fingers when your palm is open, that is overweight. And definitely not the palm of your hand, that is obesity. Notice that you can still feel the bones through the palm of your hand, but you have to press pretty hard.

If you find that there is a “little extra” over the ribs, the next excuse we make for our friends is to say that it's just extra muscle.

If you find that there is a “little extra” over the ribs, the next excuse we make for our friends is to say that it's just extra muscle. The reason we choose this area, where the ribs curve over, is because there are NO MUSCLE GROUPS that overlay the ribs at this point. There are some muscles that lie between the ribs, but NOT overtop. Therefore, anything extra here is just that...extra. Next time we will look at how to set some weight goals for your pet.

... the dog was overweight and saw no reason why he shouldn't stay that way. He was round and jolly.

YOUR FITNESS NOW What is the secret to staying motivated for the long term? I started my fitness journey in the year 2005. To me it only seems like a few years ago but now that I consider it I realize almost a decade has flown by. Every person who embarks on a journey of living a fitter and healthier lifestyle has his or her own reasons or their: “why”. What I mean by “why” is that initial motivation that propelled us into action.". Was it because of a need to lead by example for their family? Or was it just simply a basic need to get fit for a summer vacation? Or was there a deeper reason? For example, did a family member become ill due to lifestyle choices? Some poor choices people make can often lead them to a perfectly avoidable health situation such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Therefore, your “why” can be described as your motivation. My personal journey began when I decided to quit smoking. My initial incentive was to become regain the energy that I’d lost. My “why” then progressed to a weight loss incentive because not smoking is one thing but if you’re carrying too much weight this can be equally problematic. Weight loss is tough and from early on I realized it was going to be more difficult than I first thought. It’s about having healthier eating habits and exercising but more than that it’s about staying focused and keeping the “why” in mind. There are days when motivation is lost and your “why” can be forgotten. There are days when even I loathe the gym and/or vegetables but I know and remember my “why” and it helps me to keep going.

poses. These poses will help you to see the difference. Even wearing the same clothes could help more. 3. Write down your “WHY”: Write down the reason you started and post it on your bathroom mirror alongside some positive quotes or even on your fridge. You could even put a picture of your inspirational person in a highly visible location. 4. Think like a champ! This is very important. If you don’t think you can do it you probably won’t. Keep in a positive mindset. You need to be positive to achieve positive results. 5. When you don’t want to train…do it anyways! I must admit on the days when I don’t want to train and I drag myself in. I end up having the best workouts ever. You will be surprised how good you will feel once complete or even after a few minutes of being there and getting all of those endorphins going. So there you have it some of my secrets, or not so secrets, to staying on track and staying motivated. Remember your “why” and always keep it front of mind!

I have a few simple steps that I follow to help me keep my pace and promote better days than bad. 1. You need to keep a progress record so you can see, and be rewarded by the fact, that your efforts are making a difference. It will help you long-term to find out what works for you and what doesn’t. The best way to record your changes is through manual body fat testing as it describes to you what is actually happening. For example if you are losing fat mass and gaining muscle mass. If the above is not an option you can record your weight weekly but keep in mind this can fluctuate with food and water daily. This can help you beat your old records and should help identify peaks early on. 2. Posters and Progression photos: Yes this grants you the permission for taking your own picture AKA: “selfies”! A picture of when you first started alongside a current photo can help. You could also post up a picture of someone you inspire to look like. Every three months or so take some pictures using front, both sides, and back

The

Music Spot HAYLEY SALES

Since the international release of her last record, Hayley Sales has been hard at work touring, writing on a new collection of songs, and recently guest starring on the TV show CEDAR COVE (Hallmark USA) in the role of "Shelley." She splits her time between Vancouver B.C and Los Angeles CA. Recently, Sales teamed up with Pledge Music to fan-fund the recording of her next album which she plans to record early next year. Tina from TLC Entertainment had a brief chat with her. 1. What do you prefer acting or singing and why? You know, I honestly love them both. I find them inspiring in incredibly similar and incredibly different ways. With acting, you get to slip into another person's shoes, tell a story through their eyes, their words, their world, and with music, with songwriting and performing, you get to tell a story, and its your story. They're just different mediums for exploring what it means to be alive, to fall in love, to be heartbroken, to be lost, or to be on top of the world. When I was growing up, I saw no need to chose between the two and spent every waking hour either diving into the theatre or writing songs at my piano. They inspired me in different ways, and lead me to discover different things about myself and about life. I guess my answer to your question somewhere in between black and white, muddled in grey, but its the most honest answer I can give.

practice, to write, to explore, and I don't think I would be where I am today, without having had that special period early in my life. 3. Tell us about your new album due to be released in the fall what are we to expect? The next album is going to be quite different from the first two, but not completely unexpected. A lot has happened since I recorded the last album, a lot of life has happened and I am hoping to allow all those experiences to infiltrate the music. When I was a child, I was absolutely obsessed with Judy Garland and the music of the 1930's. On the first two records, I shied away from exposing that influence in some ways, while the new music merges it in with my indie sound. Being an actress, I have been thinking of this next album cinematically - The songs are romantic and swoon like the music of a soundtrack, ranging from pop tunes to ballads infused with a retro flare. Several of the tunes were arranged by Juno Award winning Sax/ pianist Phil Dwyer. We just finished recording strings in Nashville with the phenomenal arranger, Carl Marsh (Etta James, Elton John, James Brown) and are now diving into the remaining tracking. My dad, Richard Sales, is producing. The release date has been pushed back to early 2015 due to my recent signing with Blue Sapphire Music (Jeff Burns/Gary Slaight). 4. Who inspires you musically? Acting ?

There are so many people who inspire and have inspired me, I don't know where to begin! I adore Billie Holiday and Judy Garland, love the songwriting of Nina Simone, enjoy listening to pretty much everything from top 40 hits on radio to Chopin. I'm just addicted to music. Any and all forms of it. Diana Ross to The Roots. I find there's a time and a place for every style. As far as acting is concerned, I love a variety of actors 2.
