TERRY FOX RUN september 14, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

T

he 34th annual Terry Fox Run is just around the corner and organizers are looking to recruit local cancer survivors to be a part of Terry’s Team.

An entire nation was stunned and saddened when the heroic Canadian passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.

Terry Fox has inspired millions of people and decades following his death runs are held across the country to keep his Marathon of Hope alive.

Terry’s story is very near and dear to the heart of an Errington grandmother.

On Sunday September 14th, people around the world will take part in what is now a Canadian tradition and carry on the legacy of a young man who never gave up. When he attempted to run across Canada with an amputated leg to raise money for cancer research, his epic journey touched the hearts of all Canadians. After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres to prepare, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12th, 1980 with little fanfare.

Micheline Messner’s 14-year-old grandson Ben Campbell has been battling the same cancer that took Terry’s life. Just like Terry, Ben had to have one of his legs amputated to remove the cancer. He has also had tumors removed from his lungs. The young Canadian was living in Texas when he was diagnosed with Ostio Sarcoma and Micheline says that thanks to world wide cancer research her grandson is alive today.

Enthusiasm soon grew and the money collected along his route began to mount.

“Terry Fox is my hero. Terry was not as lucky as Ben because Terry died from his cancer. My little Ben had the same cancer as Terry and he is still alive today and has been cancer free for five years,” she acknowledged.

He ran close to 42 kilometres a day through the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario.

Micheline admitted Ben’s journey has been a difficult one but thankfully he is alive and well today.

However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs.

“Although he had his leg amputated, he is doing fine and he has adapted to his prosthetic leg. “If Terry Fox were diagnosed today, he may have had a better chance at beating the same

bone cancer that Ben had … so I say thank you Terry Fox.” To date, over $650 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name. This year’s run will involve more than two million people in more than 50 countries as they join together for a great cause … finding a cure for cancer. At Rathtrevor Provincial Park there will be an event geared towards people all ages and abilities. You can run or walk a 3.3 km, 5 km or 10 km route. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at picnic shelter number two with the run starting at 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to sign the memory book if they wish to dedicate their run to a loved one. Cancer survivors are welcome to sign up as Terry’s Team members and receive a welcome package that includes a unique red Terry’s Team shirt. On run day, team members can identify themselves as cancer survivors who have benefited from the legacy of Terry Fox. Event volunteers are also needed to assist with registration and to provide encouragement along the route. “TerryFoxToronto19800712” by Jeremy Gilbert - Transferred from en.wikipedia.

elebrate the delightful old time music of Canada this month with the Coombs Old Time Fiddlers as they host their annual jamboree and dance at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds on Friday and Saturday September 19th and 20th.

This year the jamboree includes the Coombs Country Opera on Friday evening, providing a great weekend of music. The Coombs Old Time Fiddlers Club has been going strong since the 1980’s and long time member Bruce Foden said their annual jamboree will include some world class talent as well as some novices. It starts with an afternoon open stage which offers musicians an opportunity to sign up and demonstrate their talents. This is followed by a special performance by fiddler extraordinaire Sarah Tradewel. This current BC Old Time Fiddling Champion has been impressing crowds all over the world with her fiddling for many years. The accomplished musician is a classically

Although Tradewell lives in Victoria, she is also a member of the Coombs Old Time Fiddlers Club. And while the local music club may be called Old Time Fiddlers, Foden assured that the group is far from a bunch of old timers plucking on a banjo.

Foden said they would like to change the perception that you have to be old to be part of their group. Members of the club range in age from 20 to 97 and Foden said they have about 50 members who play a variety of instruments.

trained singer and violinist but also has a dance and musical theatre background.

“They vary from time to time but it is predominantly fiddles and of course the banjo, guitar, mandolin and sometimes an accordion. Some members also play bass spoons and occasionally washtub bass … it adds an extra something to the performance,” he explained.

She has won many awards for her playing, including two consecutive BC fiddle championships and has been invited to the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Championship in Ottawa four times.

Foden expects a great jam session and said people will be treated to a variety of musical genres including bluegrass, Celtic, country and other traditional styles that trace back to Scotland, Ireland and France.

Tradewell, who is entering her fourth year at the University of Victoria, has a large repertoire of music including Celtic, old time, bluegrass and classical. Foden said they are thrilled that she returns each year to perform on their stage.

“The music has evolved. It has Celtic roots and some of it is from the Canadian Maritime provinces.

“Last year before she came here to fiddle she performed with a classical symphony orchestra. There is no question about her talent,” he stated and agreed the Oceanside community is lucky to have someone of her calibre perform each year. Tradewell was the winner of the 2013 U-Vic Bach Competition, played principal viola with the U-Vic Symphony for two years, played with the Victoria Symphony and has performed in the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

The old time dance Saturday night will include great waltzes, polkas, twosteps, schottisches and reels played by Vancouver Island musicians.

OCEANSIDE WOMEN'S HOCKEY LEAGUE story by BRENDA GOUGH

W

omen and girls have taken to ice hockey in unprecedented numbers recently and in Oceanside a new female league has emerged so even more ladies can lace up for Canada’s game. The Oceanside Women’s Hockey League (OWHL) will be the first of its kind in the area to offer a fun league that will appeal to women of all abilities. Women new to hockey or who do not want to travel to play hockey are encouraged to join the league. Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Recreation Programmer Colleen Jordan said there have been a couple of female hockey teams in the Oceanside area including the Sea Gals but they were a team that traveled and for some women it is challenging to play on a team when road trips are involved. “A lot of women find it hard to play a traveling sport especially when you have a family. It becomes more difficult to commit.” She said the idea behind the OWHL is to have a couple of teams that play each other weekly at Oceanside Place.

The Tuesday night house league has been established to meet the increasing recreational hockey needs of women in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. The non-contact game will provide a safe venue for beginners to develop their hockey skills in a fun-filled atmosphere. Players of all skill levels are welcome and Jordan said even people who have never played hockey before are welcome to come out and play. “We are looking at creating a league similar to what they have in Nanaimo and will be playing for fun and exercise. We hope to get enough women for two teams.” Games will be played Tuesday nights from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. The league needs two teams to run and if more women register a third team will be added and games will be played on two nights a week. Each team will be balanced with a variety of skill levels and experience. You must be 19 and older and Jordan said if you don’t have the necessary equipment there are plenty of affordable options.

“There is a gear loan program at Oceanside Place…that is one way of getting some pieces,” she said. Jordan played ringette as a kid and then took up hockey as an adult. She has coached female hockey and assisted with creating the first minor hockey girl’s team in 2004. While she is not as spry on her skates as she used to be, she said she is looking forward to playing in a league for all abilities. “When you get to a certain age you can’t play like you did when you were in your twenties. This league is non contact and there will be referees,” she explained. Teams will be selected from a pre-league evaluation skate on September 23rd at 7:45 p.m. and there will be 11 sessions until December 9th. 10 more session will run from January 6th to March 10th.
