Note to the Reader Refreshing amusement. Recreation… it’s a thing. It’s separate from watching TV or playing video games. The very word ‘recreation’ has its’ origins in the idea of “…refreshing ourselves through amusement.” Essentially, if you are bored go find an activity. Makes sense right? People in France knew this as early as the 14th century when the word ‘recreation’ first appeared in the written record. They knew, apparently, that a case of the “Monday’s” could be cured easily enough by getting out with a friend for a rousing round of knuckles (or whatever they did in 14th C France). Today we might take shots on each other with a soccer ball or by shooting some hoop at the local gym. Whatever the amusement-du-jour, be conscious to not confuse actual recreation with watching recreational activities on TV. While television and video games may provide a sort of ‘amusement’ seldom do they offer ‘refreshment.’ In any case, it’s only fun watching tennis on TV for so long before you need to get out there and play for yourself. Some of the best recreational activities are the unplanned, spontaneous ones. Reminiscent of the childhood days when mom told you to ‘go play outside’ and you moaned about and kicked the dirt trying to figure out what to do and before you knew it you were building a tree fort or skateboarding off a home-made half-pipe. In my opinion recreation is best when it’s both shared and physical. It’s better to go for a run with a friend or go to the pool with the family than to do either alone. There are many opportunities for fun and lively outdoor or rec-center focused activities locally so stop with the excuses. Spring is almost sprung so now is most definitely the time to, grab a friend or two, and get out there and refresh yourself. Simon Rideout, Editor What’s On Digest ©Rideout Communications

Easy Ways to Freshen Up Your Home
Another winter has passed and warmer breezes are starting to blow. If the urge to hunker down has been replaced with the desire to throw open a few windows, it’s time to start spring cleaning! Here are a few quick tricks to make your home seem fresh and new. • Rotating your art helps you enjoy it anew! If possible, replace darker works of art with lighter, pastel-coloured pieces at this time of year • Bring the aroma of spring indoors: whether this is accomplished using a diffuser, freshcut flowers or some candles, scent can have a large effect on the feel of a roomeplace heavy throws and bedding with crisp linens and lighter-coloured blankets. Bright throws and accent pillows can brighten spirits as well as rooms • Getting rid of clutter - on your countertops, your fridge, and in your drawers and cupboards - creates a sense of tranquility and
makes a space easier to keep clean, too. Take some time to get rid of old, unused items that take up space and collect dust. Invest in some stackable airtight containers or pretty wicker baskets to organize what you want to keep • Now that the days are brightening, let the sunshine in by cleaning your windows! Make your own smudge-free cleaner by combining 2 parts water to 1 part white distilled vinegar • Green plants not only freshen and filter the air in your home, they bring colour and life to any room. • Replace heavy curtains with breezier fabrics, and dust, vacuum and wash items and areas that see a lot of traffic • Make your own inexpensive all-purpose kitchen cleaner that smells great, too. Spring Driving Safety Spring arrives this month, and school children across the province enjoy Spring Break from March 19 until after the Easter long weekend. What this means for drivers is that not only are there the usual road and weather challenges at this time of year, there will be lots of kids out playing this month and enjoying the lengthening daylight hours. How then to keep everyone safe? Here are a few thoughts for drivers to keep in mind.
only gives you time to react to unexpected road hazards like potholes, it reduces your chances of being hit by kicked-up rocks so common at this time of year
• don’t be too quick to take off your winter tires: a general rule of thumb is to keep them on until ambient temperatures stay above 7 degrees Celsius
• Meltwater and winter erosion could mean gravel shoulders are much softer than usual. Be aware of this and slow down if you need to pull off the road
• The warmer weather brings out twowheeled and two-footed travellers: keep a sharp eye out for motorcyclists and cyclists, and for children out enjoying Spring Break. Slow down and pay careful attention in residential and school zones. Young children are easily distracted by play and don’t always notice traffic
• Residual winter sand and loose gravel on roadways act as tiny ball bearings under your tires and cause significant reduction in tire grip. When exiting off of major roads onto sideroads, you may be going from a road with good grip to one with very little: be sure to anticipate and slow down
• At this time of year the Island can get wide fluctuations in temperature and repeating freeze-thaw cycles. Not only can daytime moisture quickly turn to ice on shaded roadways and overnight when the temperature drops, but the freeze-thaw cycle can cause potholes to form. Keeping your distance from the vehicle in front not

• Finally, hibernating animals are waking up and moving about as they forage for food: be sure to slow down and stay alert in rural areas or where animal traffic is high. • Remember: if drivers remain focused on the task at hand, passengers and pedestrians alike will be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of spring in safety.

PET TIP Garden Dog Most people re-organize their lives in January. For me, it’s spring. I love the spring. There is something about life stirring again after a winter break. In our beautiful coastal climate, we don’t get the hard stop of winter on the Canadian Prairies, but the transition to spring and new life happens every year. This year, I’m following my standard itch to get the garden going and add to the life of spring. I was out in the back yard, puttering and fixing the things that inevitably break down over a

winter of “free time in the garden” for the dogs, and the girls were all outside with me. The younger two were racing around, playing chase with a toy they had found, and my old girl was watching. It hit me then. She has always been the girl to find the toy, she has always been sleek and muscular. And there she was following me around the back yard sitting on my feet when I stopped, and coming for pets rather then racing around with her sisters. She’s old, my girl. She has thyroid disease and she gets that monitored closely. She comes in for her yearly bloodwork to check everything else is doing what it should on the inside and she eats healthy. Although,we’ve had to limit her walks because she just can’t keep up with the younger two…although she thinks she can. My girl’s lucky, because she sees a veterinarian every day…but I miss things in that every day. I get another veterinarian to have a look at her every 6 months and I review her body condition every few weeks. Why? Because she’s an old lady, and old age isn’t a disease, but it does mean that she needs extra check-ins with her doctor to make sure she’s around with us as long as possible. I haven’t had a dog with me in the garden for a few years, and I didn’t realize how much I missed it. Sure, the other girls are “in the garden” and they check in for a quick flurry of kisses and muddy paws, but my old lady, she stays right next to me. She enjoys our running conversation, adding her tail beat for emphasis to the important parts. When we stop for a break, or if I’m sitting still for a bit, she leans in to warm both of us up. Spring is full of life. My old lady sees it a bit differently then she did as a pup, but she’s vibrant and alive still…just at a more stately pace.

Navy is the New Black Too much black in your wardrobe? Well, we have another colour choice coming into prominence this year: NAVY BLUE. Brands have made BLACK the dominant in wardrobe colour for years because of its versatility. But things are changing. Navy is just as versatile as it makes you look thinner because it is a receding colour, which minimizes. Navy is a universal colour because it complements all skin tones as well. Navy is a little less harsh if you find black washes you out. Dark navy exists in almost every closet in the form of denim already, so you are sure to have a few tops to start off if you give navy a try. This winning fashion colour is excellent in professional settings and is quoted as the #1 power colour for business wear. It works well to project strength and lift your confidence. It’s a must for your work wardrobe. Whether using navy in a casual, travel, or evening outfit, it’s a winner! IN CONCERT Live from Kastoria, Greece When Pavlo’s PBS Special, “Live in Kastoria”, a celebration of his unique blend of Greek, flamenco and Latin music, or Mediterranean music as he likes to call it, was released in 2016, he had no idea how much it would change his life. Today, his live concerts sell-out all over the world, millions of people have seen him perform, and he’s just released his 11th CD, “The Ultimate Collection”. Pavlo has a touring schedule that includes as many as 200 concerts per year, and he loves every moment of every one. “Balance is important,” he says in a telephone interview from Mexico. He’s part way through a 70 city tour that wraps up in early summer and Nanaimo is one of those cities. “I eat and sleep the best I can and although I don’t get skinny, I workout every day.” His sense of humour shines through. Pavlo travels with his wife and daughter, who is homeschooled so they can all be together, and when there’s a break in the touring schedule, they spend time at their home in Florida “... to be in the sun and walk the dog.” Pavlo thrives on performing live. “I’m everything but a guitar player on a stool in the middle of the stage,” he says. Fans have described feelings of “being carried away” by his music and every concert different. He likes folk music for that reason; the appetite for impromptu programs, with a focus on the organic experience for both musicians and members of the audience. Pavlo fondly shares a memory of meeting guitarist Brian Hughes on a flight from California to Mexico. Their conversation led directly to Brian being announced as a Special Guest at Pavlo’s show the very next day. Pavlo is coming off the excitement of having just finished filming his second special for PBS at Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s most prestigious theatres, with his 92 piece band. On his Facebook page, he thanks
the beautiful people of Guadalajara for one of the “most magical concerts in my life.” Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo fell in love with music at an early age. A quote from his father on his website reads: “Have the courage to do what you love.” Pavlo didn’t expect to be playing music to millions of people, and it took courage to pursue what he loves. He pursued music because of passion and never expected to be performing for a global audience. “Music was the easiest part of my life. I grew up playing in Rush tribute bands and wedding cover bands. I’ve done it all.” “I can’t wait for the Nanaimo concert,” he says. He’s performed here several times already and is no stranger to the Port Theatre stage. “I have a special guest planned for the Nanaimo show as well,” he says. “I like to be spontaneous, and you never know who’s going to jump on stage.” Pavlo will perform at the Port Theatre on Friday, March 16th, at 7:30 pm. He says that by the end of the performance, the audience will become part of an extended family.
Pavlo in Concert – Live from Kastoria, Greece at 7:30 p.m. at The Port Theatre, on Friday, March 16th, is part of Festival Nanaimo. Learn more on Facebook at facebook.com/festivalnanaimo or online at www.festivalnanimo.com

Million Dollar Quartet

whatsondigest.com | MARCH 2018
Rockabilly Jukebox legends Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash are back by popular demand at the Chemainus Theatre Festival, with the return of Million Dollar Quartet from March 23 to April 14, 2018. Originally a popular Broadway musical which garnered Tony nominations in 2010, Million Dollar Quartet was inspired by actual events that happened at famous Sun Record Studios in 1956, when four of music’s legendary greats came together unexpectedly and recorded an impromptu jam session together. Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash played one red hot mix of spicy rhythm and blues, gospel, and country that was nothing short of a rau-
cous hillbilly homecoming. The musical explosion that became rock and roll was ignited by Sam Phillips, the independent music producer with his own unique vision for the future of the music industry. It was his vision and mentorship that started the careers of all four of these ‘good ole’ boys,’ launching them into a lifetime of success and becoming the kings of their genres. Phillips’ Sun Records recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee, is the place of origin for rockabilly greatness and the story that is Million Dollar Quartet.

KOOL TOYS for “KIDS” from 1 to 92 Spring - Get Growing With spring officially arriving this month, it’s great to watch the world around us come to life. This is a great opportunity to introduce children to the world of plants and how they grow.
doors, provide the perfect home for a family of mini gnomes. A garden of rocks and twigs can become a world of dragons. You could even grow a small plate of grass for small farm animals to graze on.
Growing plants from seed is a great way to introduce children to the needs of living things. A simple miniature greenhouse kit is a ready-to-go solution or even bean seeds planted in a glass jar will do the trick. Choosing an unusual plant can add a fun twist to the growing process. How long will it take for the spots to appear on a polka dot plant? Do the leaves on a sensitive plant move even when they’re young? What does a Giant Redwood look like before it become so tall?
Whether indoors or outdoors, this is a great time to get growing. The perfect chance to bring the world of plants to life for children.
For something whimsical, try a fairy garden kit with magic beans that reveal hidden words on the leaves as they emerge! For more adventurous growers, start carnivorous plants from seed. There are terrarium kits for growing these which contain a dome to keep the environment moist and warm. While waiting for the plants to grown, you can set up a small world for them with colourful gravel and small creatures – just waiting for their world to come to life. For a more subtle introduction to growing, miniature theme gardens are part science and part craft project. Fairy gardens are the most common theme gardens, but there are other possibilities as well. A dish with ferns would be the perfect place for a world of dinosaurs to come to life. Small flowering plants, for indoors or out-

You may be donating because it feels good or for tax purposes, or simply because it is the right thing to do for your charity but at the end of the day your gift helps your community stay strong. At the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, we know the government is not able to fund all of the medical equipment our hospital needs. We intend to help provide equipment and ensure our amazing hospital staff have the tools they need to do their job; taking care of us. We can’t say it enough – thank you to everyone who made donations to our Christmas campaign “Light the Trees”. As funds were donated to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, we lit Christmas bulbs on the trees outside the main entrance of the hospital to signify donations coming in. This year with your help we were able to raise more than $525,000 for medical equipment at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH), Oceanside Health Centre and Dufferin Place. We are preparing to launch a new Spring campaign over the next month. As always it will be for new medical equipment at NRGH. Whatever the goal, with your help, we can make it happen! Travelling and eating for success The first thing that comes to mind when travelling is vacation. Vacations are supposed to be fun, relaxing. Pure gluttony, right?! But wait… do you have a license to gain 10lbs by eating and drinking everything in sight? No. Do you have to exercise every day and eat like a bird? Also no. It’s about finding a balance in it all. Picking a few meals to enjoy. Find a time of day to exercise at least 3x a week that won’t interfere with your fun in the sun or family time. As a personal trainer I have learned to accept that if I want my engine to run at full capacity year-round my healthy habits also need to be year-round. Her are a few tips to help you find your fitness and healthy eating balance while on vacation. Is there a gym in the hotel (what equipment do they have)? • Do they have a fridge options or Kitchenettes? • Where are the local gyms and proximity to hotel? • Where are the grocery stores and are they easy to access? • Pre-roasted chickens are a great lean meat option (no cooking necessary). • Pre-packaged salads are also quick and easy. • Pre-cooked frozen shrimp…easy and yummy.
