Kevin’s Bacon Local band feature this month is Nanaimo-based trio Kevin’s Bacon. This year is shaping up to be another busy one for the band, with events and performances stacking up throughout Vancouver Island. The group consists of singer/guitarist Tim Lorimer, bassist Nathan Stafford, and drummer Angela Birtwistle. Their influences read like a Rock ‘n’ Roll encyclopedia—from The Beatles to The Black Keys, there is a little something for everyone in a Kevin’s Bacon performance. Fans of guitar-driven rock will appreciate Tim’s aggressive-yet-polished playing, paired with his tremendous vocal abilities that he has honed through years of on-stage experience. Drummer Angela Birtwistle comes from a musical family, and her hard-hitting style has been compared to Meg White of The White Stripes. Bassist Nathan Stafford brings over 20 years of on-stage experience in various groups, and his focused playing provides a foundation to round out the power trio. While primarily a cover band, the group has aspirations to record some original material in 2019. Tim has been the primary songwriter for Kevin’s Bacon, however Nathan is already an accomplished writer in his own right. In 2012 he signed a Publishing Administration Agreement

with Nettwerk One Music, and his work has received radio airplay in over ten countries, as well as several television placements. Recently a song he co-wrote was used in the American comedy/ drama series ‘You’re the Worst’, which airs on the FX Network in Canada and the U.S.

The next performance that Cowichan folks can check out will be on Sat. Mar. 23, at the River Side Inn, in Lake Cowichan. Stafford says fans can expect a lively mix of danceable music. Check out <kevinsbacon.ca> to find out more about upcoming shows.

The classic Disney story you know and love is coming to the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre’s stage with Adagé Studio’s production of Aladdin Jr. on Apr. 12th and 13th. The story is based on both the 1992 Academy Awardwinning movie, and the 2014 nit Broadway musical, about the “street rat” who learns that his tru worth is what lies deep within himself. Well known for their quality productions, Adagé has cast some highly talented young performers for this year’s presentation. Horse Breed Spotlight: The Norwegian Fjord If you’ve been to the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, you may have noticed a prevalence of stout beige horses with punk rock hair. These are Norwegian Fjords, one of the oldest breeds in the world and a staple at equine-assisted therapy centres across the world. Norwegian Fjords were first selectively bred by the Vikings around 1200 BC and used as war horses. In later times, these surefooted, thrifty, and hardworking horses were prized by Norwegian farmers and their families. Today, the breed is a much-loved national symbol. The first Norwegian Fjords came to North America in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Norwegian Fjords are praised for their versatility, an attribute accredited to their “jack-of-all-trades” history. They tend to have smooth gaits, sturdy conformation, and a natural affinity for people – making the Fjord a natural fit for therapeutic applications. The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA) has 4 Norwegian Fjords in their herd. These are Bocina, Josepha, Loki, and Ember (who achieved superstardom with her “Ember Had a Dream” viral video in 2018).
