Wolke says: “We hope to reach a total of 2500 volunteers by Games time. We are currently sitting at around 2000, with 24 days to go. For the most part a volunteer is someone excited to be part of the Games, someone who loves their community and wants to give back. We can train them on the details needed to be a part of our team. The vast majority of volunteers just need to be available and have a good attitude! You would be notified right away if anything such as a CRC or Drivers Abstract was needed.” Jen Woike - President, 2018 Summer Games

CTRA’s Horse Camps Welcome Children of All Abilities The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA) provides equine-assisted therapeutic services for persons with physical, developmental, intellectual/cognitive, and psycho-social special needs. Interventions include therapeutic riding, therapeutic horsemanship, adapted equestrian agility, and stable management vocational training September to June. In the summer months (July & August), CTRA offers a range of inclusive horse camps for children of all abilities. Summer horse camps are a wonderful opportunity for both children with special needs and “able-bodied/neuro-typical” children alike. For all campers, these camps provide an opportunity to gain knowledge, learn new skills, and build friendships based on a common love of horses. Campers are grouped with children of the same experience level and CTRA’s certified coaches provide safe, quality, individualized
instruction on both riding and horse care. While CTRA’s primary camps (“Hoofprints”) provide the most general experience, specialized camps are offered for participants with specific interests (equestrian vaulting) and those requiring additional supports (“Pony Pals”). CTRA’s camps are a great opportunity for children (and their families) to give CTRA’s services a try. Camps provide an excellent “firstcontact” experience for any child looking to give riding or equestrian vaulting (a combination of gymnastics and dance on horseback!) a try. For regular participants of the program, camps provide an immersive opportunity that enhances knowledge and skills. All campers benefit from developing friendships with a diverse group of peers (and horses!) in an inclusive environment. Volunteers are needed for these year’s camps and CTRA’s year-round program! A woman went to her doctor’s office. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming and ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she explained. The older doctor marched back to the new doctor and demanded, “What’s the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?” The new doctor smiled smugly “Cured her hiccups though, didn’t it?”
