International Yacht Race 2019
welcomes Royal Canadian Navy Participation
The Van Isle 360 Yacht Race is pleased to announce the participation of Royal Canadian Navy Sail Training Vessels Goldcrest and Tuna as competitors in the 2019 Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race, June 1 to 15, 2019. The vessels will be crewed by naval officers and sailors in training. The RCN will also provide the Orca-class patrol craft RAVEN (PCT 56) as a support vessel and for search and rescue capabilities if required by the Joint Rescue Command Centre (JRCC) Victoria. Public events organized for the race are presently scheduled for the following ports: Nanaimo – May 31st, 1200-1600hrs Nanaimo - JUNE 1st 9:30AM – You are invited to come to the Visiting Vessel Pier for the start of the biennial 2019 Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race! *Come for Pancake breakfast at 7:00AM at the Visiting Vessel Pier! Park at the Port Theatre Parkade and walk over to the Pier (next to the condo on Cameron Island)
The Van Isle 360 is a biennial, 580 nautical mile point-to-point race circumnavigating wild and rugged Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Sailed in nine legs, encompassing 14 days, the course provides inshore, offshore and overnight sailing through some of the most stunning and challenging waters on the planet. The race is the premiere sailboat race in the Pacific North West, having gained worldwide recognition in the sailing community since the first race in 1999. There is no other race in the world like the Van Isle. Most races start in a community, and then the sterns of the sailboats disappear over the horizon not to be seen again for days or weeks. The Van Isle visits 9 different ports during the twoweek circumnavigation, laying out the natural marine beauty of Vancouver Island to participants and visitors around the world. This year’s race will feature 38 of the fastest yachts in the Pacific North West. For more information contact:

Welcome to the “new” Nanaimo Downtown Farmers’ Market! The city’s original farmers’ market is moving to Saturdays after many years of a Friday venue. This year represents the 22nd year of opportunity for our community to Buy Local at the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza. Hours will be 9:00-2:00, opening May 14 with closing market on September 14. The Buy Local movement encourages people to support local farmers, crafters and businesses with sustainable practices and economic growth. Come and meet the people who grow your food and make the products you enjoy! The market is operated by the not-for-profit Nanaimo Downtown Farmers’ Market Society. NDFMS also coordinates markets on the Plaza on days cruise ships are in port. Generally, these markets are open from 10:00-3:00 and the general public is welcome to come as well. Vendors include a variety of farmers (great veggies, fruits, meats, eggs and cheese), homemade baking (breads, cookies, pies, muffins, gluten and sugar free and more) and small food processors (chai, pork creton, pre-
serves). We also have artisan crafters including jewelry, pottery, clothing, kitchen and home goods and giftware. To qualify to see at the market, vendors must make it, bake it or grow it. Resale items and secondhand wares are not allowed. The market features live music each week. As one of the objectives of the market is to promote local arts and crafts, we are glad to include local performers with a variety of styles. Join our interactive techno rave, Digital Folk, an immersive costume party and dance performance hybrid combined around the theme of video games that explores the strange and beautiful lines between the virtual and the real. Video-games like Just Dance! & Rock Band have changed how we gather to sing, dance, and tell stories. Digital Folk explores this phenomenon of being alone, together. Get involved in the performance space’s transformation into a playful environment that is party rumpus room from the 80’s, part visual art installation, and part secret chamber from Zelda. “What struck me in this show is how much I wanted to participate; twice getting up to shake it, shake it alongside
others to difference dance videos; and accepting without hesitation a slow dance to Freebird” – Peter Dickinson, Performance, Place, and Politics. Digital Folk runs three times on June 7th, 2019, at 7, 8, and 9 PM in a continuous cycle restarting each hour. The performers take us on a journey of interpretation and embodiment, fully dedicated to their own tasks while enveloping the audience in a paradoxical, and at times ironic, installation. TheatreOne’s Fringe Flicks Final Film of 2018-19 Season! Woman at War Halla is a choirmaster who loves her job. And she’s just learned she’s been approved to adopt a child from a war-torn area in Ukraine, a long-time dream of hers. The only hitch is that Halla is also a terrorist — an eco-terrorist to be exact. The proliferation of heavy industry, urged on by unscrupulous politicians, has been ruining Iceland’s rugged landscape and she’s taken action. Dubbed “The Mountain Woman,” Halla soon becomes the scourge of the aluminum industry. She is determined to see things through, but can’t help wondering,
would it be more fulfilling to save hypothetical future lives or one actual life: the daughter she has yet to meet and may never if she’s apprehended. Benedikt Erlingsson’s second feature drills deep into the inevitable dilemmas plaguing almost everyone committed to the greater good. And the political satire here is precise and rich. It’s evident in the sleazy Fox News–style way the government demonizes Halla. At the same time, there’s a puckish, postmodernist sense of humour percolating though Woman at War.

Hollywood Legend Lee Holdridge Takes You To A Rocky Mountain High! recorded for two major labels as a solo artist and with his brother Steve. Both grew up cutting their singing and guitar teeth on John Denver. “When I started my career, I think I played more John Denver than any other artist”, Worrall said, “I remember seeing him at the CNE the summer of 1975 with a full symphony and Lee Holdridge conducting. I knew his songs lent well to symphony, and a production of those songs with full orchestration, was no brainer!” John Denver’s internationally acclaimed composer/conductor/arranger Lee Holdridge conducts the members of the Victoria Symphony in an incredible music tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter. Together with Canadian recording artists Rick and Steve Worrall, guest soprano sensation Nadya Blanchette, tenor Nolan Kheler and a Canadian All-star band this amazing celebration is one that you definitely won’t want to miss! Since it’s debut in Kelowna BC with the Okanagan Symphony in March of 2018, the concert has gone on to thrill audiences in Western Canada and is now poised to bring it’s celebration of Denver’s music to Victoria and Nanaimo in May. Holdridge will conduct the members of the Victoria Symphony for two concerts on May 15th in Victoria at The Royal Theatre and on May 17th at The Port Theatre Nanaimo. Worrall has been a mainstay on the Canadian music scene for over forty years having
Worrall set his sights on trying to find the symphony scores and much to his disappointment; they were nowhere to be found. A quick Google search found Lee Holdridge who besides Denver has arranged and conducted for some of the biggest names in the business, including, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston and Placido Domingo to name just a few. With twenty-two Emmy nominations and seven wins, Grammy nominations, several other notable awards,
it’s easy to understand why Holdridge is a true legend and still incredibly busy. He currently is working Domingo on a new opera for the LA Opera Company. Worrall seriously doubted he would have time for his idea but emailed him anyway and to his surprise; Lee emailed back within an hour stating the idea had merit and suggested they talk. Holdridge explained the scores had been destroyed after Denver’s death because management, at the time, didn’t want to pay storage fees. “However”, he said, “I still possess all my original hand written works.” Over the next eighteen months they both reconstructed the original scores and transcribed them into a software program so they could be printed for symphony, and Rocky Mountain High – An Evening of John Denver was born. One aspect they both agreed on from the beginning was the production would not be a
“tribute” show; no one was going to dress up like John Denver. Instead the emphasis was on the music and symphony, as John would have performed them, in essence a true celebration unlike any other show but staying true to Denver’s style and content. It was also decided that as part of the production mandate, it would support a local charity as credence to John’s legacy of charitable support and philanthropy. In Victoria the show will support Our Place Society and Nanaimo, Loaves and Fishes Food Bank, two amazing organizations that serve their communities so well. Ergonomics When you are doing computer work while sitting at a desk you run the risk of discomfort and even injury. If you are able to do some simple exercises you may be able to mitigate some of these risks. Last month we discussed the lower back and the spinal area. This month we are all about the shoulders. The ‘one-arm hug’ releases tension in your shoulders. To do this stretch, grab your right shoulder with your left hand. With your right hand, grab your left elbow and gently pull it towards your right shoulder. Hold for 5 seconds, then switch to the opposite arm. These stretches are recommended for people who spend lots of time sitting and working on computers. Everyone will face their own death. For some they may have an awareness of when it will happen because they are struggling with a life limiting illness. Others may take their own life because living has become too difficult for them. Still others may have death visit them unexpectedly such as through an accident, violence or drug misuse. The anticipation of your own death or the death of someone you love, can be debilitating. In some cases, the death of a family member, particularly if it has been a complicated and unexpected death can have a far-reaching impact on a family. This can be particularly true when children are involved. Many people think of Nanaimo Hospice as primarily a Senior’s organization when in fact our services are used by children as young as three, senior citizens and everyone in between. The reason people come to us is that they are anticipating their own death or grieving the death of someone they love. As a community we will all say goodbye
to someone we love, under circumstances unique to us as individuals. When you, or your family or your co-workers or your friends find themselves anticipating their own death or are grieving the death of someone they love, encourage them to come see us. Nanaimo is an amazing and generous community to live in. Without the community support we receive we wouldn’t be able to offer the services we do. One of the ways the community supports Hospice is through participation in events like Hike for Hospice. Please consider participating in Hike for Hospice, possibly in memory of someone you love and to support others who are grieving the loss of someone they love.
5K FOAM FEST = FUN FITNESS!!!! Come out and get Filthy Clean on June 8th, 2019 at Arbutus Meadows for this Summer’s #1 Fun Run. The 5K Foam Fest has 22 exciting obstacles to conquer over 5 fun filled kilometers. From the cargo climb, mud pits, to inflatables filled with foam we make sure to try and ‘trip’ you up along the way. 5K Foam Fest is quite simply the Foamiest, Muddiest, Funnest 5K challenge out there. Ages 8 and up can participate, making it a perfect event for friends, families, fitness enthusiasts or people that run for the beer afterward. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Ages 8 and up. All children must be physically, mentally, and emotionally capable to complete the course with proper course etiquette. Kids aged 8 to 12 years must run with a Registered Adult. Parents must use proper judgment and help the youngsters decide on what obstacles to do or not based on their ability, size and confidence level. Kids 13-17 years do not require an adult chaperone but must adhere to all course rules and regulations. Event waiver(s) must be signed by the legal guardian of any participant under the age of 18. Waivers are available to download off our website (go to your event location page to download and print). 7 years and under cannot run the 5k Foam Fest, but they can join us for FREE in our Kids FUN Zone, where they can try out our mini Inflatable Obstacle Course and Bounce House (adult supervision required). First wave/start time is at 8 am and then every 15 mins until 2 pm. You will select your wave time when registering

Celebrate Spring with Word and Music
Becoming a Poet, Rebecca Garber’s second poetry chapbook, will be launched Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 2174 Departure Bay Road, Nanaimo. Her 2018 chapbook Like a Pearl went into a second printing after all copies had sold out. Cheryl Satre will play piano solos and accompany Rebecca’s reading in this spring celebration of word and music. Rebecca Garber has been previously published in various journals across Canada, CBC Alberta Anthology (including nation-wide broadcast), and An Anthology of Nanaimo Poets. She is a member of the League of Canadian Poets, the BC Federation of Writers, and the Writers Guild of Alberta.
