The Rise of the Ratters Remote Access Tools or RAT has been used in the computer industry for years to enable engineers to repair computers remotely. However, recently there has been increased activity of RAT being used maliciously. The Ratter (as they call themselves) installs a program on your computer, be it through a dodgy website; exploit in your computer or from a seemingly innocuous email link. Once your computer is infected, they control everything on your computer. They have access to all your files and photos and even more alarmingly, they can watch you on your webcam. They can alter your files, encrypt them and extort you for money to fix them; they can message you; install whatever they want and even delete your antivirus and firewall without your knowledge. They even log what keys you press and can take snapshots of your screen so your online banking is at risk. Most Ratters prey on young girls which they sell as “slaves” on computer forums, these are innocent computer users that have had their computers infested by these people. Each Ratter may have several hundred infected computers under their control. With the advent Microsoft ending support for Windows XP, the bugs and exploits are not being fixed, so more people are becoming victims of this horrible trade. Whilst Ratting is not limited to Windows XP, the fact Microsoft have washed their hands of that operating system makes those who use it increasingly at risk of infection.

What’s On Magazine met up with Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen for this exclusive interview. Are you finding there are any particular colour trends this year? There seems to be a much more neutral stance but it is definately a year for colour. People are much more interested in colour. One of the good barometers of that is that if you look at things like advertisements on the television and you see the way advertising agencies create a sense of the generic household. At the moment it’s a very colourful household. It is a good measure of the way people feel about themselves and their property. There is definately a confidence and a sense of spring cleaning in the economy and in the housing market as well. This is expressed in energetic and colourful decorating. Do you find it easy explaining design principles to the average person? I see my job at the show as trying to help people refine their own sense of style. I don’t want to impose something on them, I am much more interested in their self expression. Designers who have their own look and want everyone to copy it tend to be very insecure people. There are of course better ways of doing anything and through my experience I would like to be able to share those lessons and help people to achieve their own style successfully. The Apartment.... Yes and it is actually been taken up in South America as well. I was in Phuket last weekend just finalising the sponsor deals. There is so much happening internationally. The House of Lawrence which is my own branded products has had a very successful launch in China with over 40 stores stocking them and we are going into the Middle East and Mexico very shortly, so it’s all beginning to happen. Do you have to spend quite a lot of time out there filming and promoting? Yes I do, but both of my girls are away from home now, Cecile is at University in London and Hermione is about to do her GCSE Pure A Levels at Marlborough so we don’t have a family at home anymore which means that both Jackie and myself can actually do a lot more travelling. Are you still guess presenting on Classic FM? Yes, that is going really well and we are stabilising at over a million listeners for the lunchtime show. Will you be going to Chelsea Flower Show this year? Yes, and I am launching a new rose with Peter Beales Roses who have taken the plunge and have decided to name a rose after me. I always thought it would be more like a suggestive gourd or stinkwort but no. Who is the gardener in your house? My wife Jackie is very much the gardener. I am kind of a Louis IVth Gardener who just points and says ‘Lets take the top off that hill and flood that village’ but she is the one that actually nurtures growing things. The house we have in the Cotswold now has a very traditional garden but one of the reasons we are moving from it, is that it has two and a half acres of very high maintenance gardens. They are beautiful of course, but now it is just us and we want to travel more, it is just too much. You are very hands on when you are instructing your projects for the shows, are you like that at home? It depends what it is, I will do bits and
pieces but I think DIY has changed a lot in the last twenty years, so that the ‘D’ in DIY now stands for Design It Yourself and I think it is more important that people now focus on finding the right kind of trades to be able to do the work for them. I am not impractical. Any other projects coming up - perhaps an autobiography? My agent wants me to do one of those but no, not at the moment. I have got a great programme coming up on Saturday night BBC2 which is a documentary I have been making for the last ten years on the restoration of Klenethly House in Wales. I have just filmed a DIY SOS with Nick Knowles and I am about to do a big series for Radio 4 on colour which is rather bizaare for a radio show. How is the commercial arm of your business developing? We are doing less designing for large companies and more products. We are into our fifth collection with Littlewoods for home accessories which is going really well. We have now got The House of Lawrence which is our international collection which Jackie is very much taking charge with so that is the dominant force in what we are doing at the moment. I take a lot of pride in the fact that we are a very British brand expanding all over the world. The House of Laurence is the key to unlocking a very British world of design style and living. The collection celebrates the quirky individuality and old school chic that makes British homes such fabulously fun places. The House of Laurence is also about the very seductive concepts of everyday luxury and design democracy, proudly named “Glam Britannia” and “A Pinch of Posh” by Laurence himself. Every Last Friday Every Last Friday is a monthly festival of music and the arts providing a forum for local musicians, artists and dramatists to showcase their talents in a variety of venues around the historical 1066 town of Battle on every last Friday of the month. Starting on Friday 25th of April you are invited to enjoy live music and art in our restaurants and pubs from 6pm till 9pm Come and hear upwards of six different singers and musicians performing in four venues around the town centre. All of the venues will host all six musicians throughout the evening, so it’s your choice whether you stay in one place or follow a favourite performer to all four venues. The restaurants will also feature their own art exhibits so you can browse while listening to your favourite acts. We were over in Hailsham last week doing the weekly shop and decided to pop into Callenders for a spot of lunch. And why not? A two course lunch is only £6.50. “You’d pay that for a sandwich in some places”, the Mrs laughed. Callenders has become a firm favourite for us over the last four years, for lunch and dinner. It’s the perfect place for an evening out with friends. All the food is locally grown or produced and you can really taste the freshness. The pan seared liver and bacon is truly special, this is top quality bistro style cooking, prepared and plated with the minimum of fuss. The slow roast pork belly is amazing and the roast duck is a particular favourite of mine. The chips are a fine example of how good simple cooking can be, maris pipers, hand cut and cooked three times, golden, crispy and fluffy in the middle. With this kind of attention to detail they deserve to be famous.

Painting workshops from Halcyon Days Annie Sloan has developed her paint and techniques over the last 25 years. It is stated as ‘The Best Paint in The World’ by many of it’s users It has a wonderful soft, matt finish that is ideal for furniture. There are many exciting colours that can be mixed to achieve the hue that you favour. Here is the ‘biggy’: IT REQUIRES NO PRIMING, NO RUBBING DOWN AND it can be used on almost anything, old waxed pine, on metal and varnished wood. It is fantastic for walls as it allows the wall to breathe (can be waxed after for luxurious finish). It can be used on floors (concrete or wood) and then finished with Annie Sloan’s water based floor varnish). You can also apply it outside on walls, wood, metal, plastic or terracotta. Just leave to cure (harden) before exposing to the rain. We run paint courses at our home in New Romney where you can learn to upcycle furniture and other items. We will teach you paint effects that will revamp and embellish your furniture,You will gain the confidence to colour combine (and to be daring!) you will learn that you cannot ‘mess up’ just enjoy. Hailsham Street Market A Resounding Success… The Hailsham Street Market is back for 2014. The market has proven to be a feast for the eyes and senses and has delighted many shoppers in Hailsham since its launch in August last year. With especially designed green and white striped stalls the market offers a colourful and attractive display that comes to life with its vibrant atmosphere and fantastic products on offer. The Street Market is one of Hailsham Forward’s main initiatives which takes place every Saturday except the Farmers’ Market Saturday (2nd) when it will be held instead on the Thursday, between 9.30am and 3pm.
Over 25 stalls set up pitch in Vicarage Field, selling local quality produce including deliciously fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, traditionally smoked fish and cheese, bread, Greek food, sausages and pies, jewellery, crafts and baby gifts, children’s’ books, natural beauty products, home decor, garden plants, as well as irresistible home-made preserves and cakes. Devonshire Road is closed to traffic and for two weekends a year (May & September) becomes the venue for a real Continental Street Market. Country Pursuits Mobility doesn’t have to be grey!
A
fter weeks of rain, the first really glorious day of the Spring greeted the first Wealden Mobility OffRoad Mobility Scooter Demonstration Day. The rolling hills of Brightling Park provided the setting and the inevitable mud provided the challenge. Specialist off road scooters are designed to cope with most things that nature can throw at them and so the challenge was accepted. From Lincolnshire came the Overlander 4 from TerrainHopper. With direct drive 4x4 capability and an independent suspension, the Overlander is a full blown ‘go anywhere’ machine. As driven by one of the attendees, it was more than happy taking on the softest of soft ground for an “up to its axles” half mile spin around Brightling Park! It coped admirably with the mud and even crossed fallen trees with ease. If you are looking for a machine that will take you to all parts of your estate, up steep slopes and through valleys and streams then look no further. At the end of the session, the guys from TerrainHopper even had us climbing up, and down, a steep flight of steps safely and always in control. The two versions on display, one bright yellow and the other in orange, had a wide range of accessories including a winch and included the latest LED lighting systems making them stand out in all conditions. The main rival to the Overlander is the Horizon Mayan. This formidable machine is the world’s only 3 phase AC powered off road scooter with a terrific top speed of 15 mph. The high torque is invaluable for off road work where the Mayan can plough through the muddiest and roughest of conditions without any loss of power. Having a narrower chassis than the TerrainHopper, it is a machine that can equally be used on the pavements of Heathfield, where its speed is restricted, as well as the muddiest parts of Brightling Park. The Mayan can be fully specified and, like the TerrainHopper, has a wide range of seating and controller options. On the day, everyone (including the What’s On editor) was free to have a go on each of the scooters and really get the feel of them. One attendee, Mr Hayes, told us that he “never had so much fun” as he sped off on the Mayan along a muddy path and off into the distance. Even Gardie and Di Grissell were seen speeding off, presumably to explore parts of the estate that they hadn’t seen for weeks. Between the lovely weather, refreshments and good company the day was a resounding success. Gucci is pleased to announce its participation in the Chelsea Flower Show, 2014

ince the Gucci Flora motif debuted in 1966 in homage to actress Grace Kelly, following a visit by the then Princess Grace of Monaco with her husband Prince Ranier to the Gucci Milan boutique, it has become one of the most well-loved and recognisable icons of the Italian House. This May, Gucci will be bringing Flora to life, literally, in an innovative, contemporary way in the ‘Fresh Garden’ category at the Chelsea Flower Show. The original design was commissioned by Rodolfo Gucci, one of founder Guccio Gucci’s sons, who wanted to present Princess Grace with a special gift. He commissioned artist Vittorio Accornero to create a floral pattern for an original silk scarf as a symbolic bouquet. Flora’s delicate and whimsical composition of flowers, fruits and insects, drawn with naturalistic precision in thirty-seven colours, is dedicated to the four seasons. Award-winning garden designer Sarah Eberle will take the design as inspiration for the Gucci Flora Garden, which will be a horticultural realisation of the famous illustration. The project embodies the Royal Horticultural Society’s dedication to advancing gardening techniques, and showcases expertise and excellence in horticulture. The values of traditional skill, innovation and environmental responsibility are perfectly synonymous with Gucci’s own House philosophy. Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini says, ‘When I first joined Gucci, I immediately asked to see the archive, and it was there that I rediscovered the Flora pattern. I remember chic women – my mother and grandmother among them – wearing Flora scarves in the Seventies, and I’ve always been fascinated by the story behind the design and how it was created for Princess Grace. That is why Flora was the very first iconic design motif from Gucci’s storied past that I decided to revive and reinterpret, and since then I have used it on bags, dresses, scarves (of course) and as the inspiration for a series of fragrances. I am so excited by the prospect of finally seeing Flora as a real garden at the Chelsea Flower Show; there is something truly magical about this project.’ To celebrate the Flora Garden, Gucci will introduce two exclusive Lady Lock handbags designed by Frida Giannini. An evolution of the House’s famous use of bamboo cane characterises the shape of the Lady Lock, which features a bamboo top-handle with elegantly elongated lines. This has been heated and bent into a semi-circle using the method Gucci’s Florentine artisans first employed in 1947 when they were pushed to invent clever solutions to wartime rationing of materials. The design has a luggage-style opening, with a placket that unlocks at the top of the bag. It will be available in two sizes – small and medium – in the Flora canvas. Cutting Garden snippets April… and the Spring bulbs are in full flow. ‘Apricot Emperor’ are amongst the first Tulips for us, closely followed by deep maroon ‘Havran’ and cerise ‘Dolls Minuet’. Fabulous mixed with wallflowers in fiery orange and deep red, with a touch of acid green Euphorbia… in the garden or in a vase. Gorgeous scented Narcissi also feature in April, including the delicate little bells of ‘Silver Chimes’, and the taller ‘Geranium’ and ‘Actaea’. Add Ivory wallflowers, Cerinthe and perhaps purple Anemones for an eye-catching contrast! As the weather warms, hardy seedlings of Ammi, Larkspur, Cornflower and Calendula can be planted outside. These will start to flower later than the over-wintered plants that are already romping away outside, so giving a succession of flowers to cut. Half-hardy annuals can be started this month. Sow seeds in a greenhouse or on a windowsill… Cosmos, Amaranthus and Zinnias are all easy, and excellent for cutting.

Birds of a Feather
I spent some time out with my camera this month. Tho’ the weather was still a bit dodgy there were some glorious night skies and sunsets. Bodiam Castle is a great place for sky shots and as I pass that way home from the shop I get good opportunities to whip my Lumix out. Also (if I am lucky) the resident Barn Owl shows itself, to glimpse this magnificent bird quartering the fields alongside the river must be one of the most rewarding sights in nature. On one evening it spent a good ten minutes doing it’s stuff by Male Sparrowhawk
the road and up towards the castle, the views through my trusty binoculars made me a very contented old man. We have had a lot more Goldfinches in the nature area than normal over the past few weeks, these super little birds really do brighten up a dull day, they love both the sunflower hearts and the niger seeds. Even tho’ we have 9/10 feeders dotted around the shop and nature area they still find the time and energy to squabble over any particular feeder perch.
We do get regular visits from Mr & Mrs Sparrowhawk, very rarely do they manage to get their lunch as they are normally spotted long before they make an appearance. This young chap stayed long enough for me to get a quick photo...
