BEST BRITISH MADE FATHER’S DAY GIFTS On Father’s Day on 17 June, we celebrate Dads and show our appreciation for his support and the happy memories. Dads love their sheds and these handy pairs of pegs made in Shropshire support traditional T-handles, rakes and broom heads, etc., and the screw fixing can be screwed directly into a wooden garden shed. The robust design is simple and effective, and its scalloped profile suits any spade or fork handle. With the addition of rawl plugs, they can find their way just about anywhere around the home and garden to organise Dad’s spaces. If your Dad grows vegetables and/or flowers from seed, this tool made from oak has 12 turned pegs spaced apart in a 2 x 2” grid so seed drills can be made by the dozen! Works in both standard seeds trays, halfsize seed trays and in garden seed beds. These gardening gloves handmade in a Shropshire tannery with soft leather and long suede cuffs will protect Dad’s hands and his forearms from brambles. This soft ultra-rich shave cream made in Cumbria with 97% natural ingredients creates an abundance of luxurious lather ensuring consistently close skin-to-blade contact, lubrication and hydration throughout Dad’s entire shave. This unique cream can be applied with fingertips or with a shave brush. After shaving, it leaves his skin smooth, nourished and scented with a rich masculine, woody fragrance. Get into the British spirit, with this handcrafted tweed flat cap handmade in Shropshire, featuring a hand printed union jack flag. Each one of Brad’s flat caps is unique and will look as good on your head as it will Dad’s! This military style waterproof kit bag with a modern edge is made in East Sussex. It is stylish, durable and functional and great for dad’s gym kit, boating, motorcycling or weekend bag. Versatile and practical, it can be worn over one shoulder, across the chest like a messenger bag, hands free like a backpack, or hand held like a duffel bag. It also works as carry on hand luggage (designed to IATA specifications). Paula Williams, Founder of BRITISH design BRITISH made, 64 High Street, Battle, TN33 0AG, helping you to buy British.

onney’s is a family run Cafe & Bistro in Battle High Street. They are now also open Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings from 6.30pm for authentic Spanish Tapas, Wine & Beer. It’s ideal for group dining and will keep even your fussiest friends happy while solo diners would not feel left out with plenty of ideal selections. The menu provides various options – hot and cold tapas, salads, sharing platters, Paella (made to order) and tempting
desserts. The informal, fun atmosphere makes Bonney’s a great place to come with a group for a lively night out. There is even a rear patio area for those warm summer evenings where alfresco dining is a must. The menu is extensive and the food is exceptional, offering the best in traditional Spanish fare. There’s everything from vegetarian options to seafood to artisanal meats and breads. We particularly love the fact that the menu explains each dish
alongside it’s Spanish name and the staff were exceptionally knowledgable when advice was requested. Attention to detail is everything when it comes to tapas and each dish was beautifully prepared and presented. There’s a good selection of sweet or dry Spanish wines and the atmosphere feels like that of an authentic Spanish tapas bar. Thoroughly recommended......... What’s On Editor.

Chris Beardshaw wins prestigious Best in Show Award at RHS Chelsea
he garden showcases a secure and sensory environment offering a tranquil woodland scene filled with soft, textured perennials. It is Morgan Stanley’s fourth year with Chris Beardshaw and has been designed to raise awareness of the work of the NSPCC. On winning the award, Chris Beardshaw said: “It’s a genuine privilege to be holding the Best in Show Award at RHS Chelsea 2018. 20 years ago when I started designing Show Gardens I looked up to and was really inspired by the designers winning these sorts of awards, I hope what we do inspires people in the same way.” RHS judge James Alexander-Sinclair said: “It has a very clear and concise message. The plants are of outstanding quality and beautifully put together. The building
provides a calm and contemplative space for reflection which contrasts exquisitely with the exuberance of the surrounding planting – it works on every level.” Gardens among the Gold Medal winners also included The M&G Garden with designer Sarah Price, The Wedgewood Garden by Jo Thompson and The Welcome to Yorkshire Garden designed by Mark Gregory, Managing Director of Landform who also received the Best Construction Award. Kazuyuki Ishihara’s O-mo-te-na-shi no NIWA – The Hospitality Garden won Best Artisan Garden meanwhile Best in the all new Space to Grow category was awarded to Urban Flow – in partnership with Thames Water, by debut RHS Chelsea designer Tony Woods. The new category offers original ideas, trends and take home messages to inspire visitors to transform their outdoor spaces.

Roses at Pashley Manor Gardens
F
rom mid-June the roses are at their best at Pashley Manor Gardens – a blend of old fashioned and modern roses are complemented by foxgloves, clematis, London pride, sweet peas and summer flowering shrubs. Masses of gorgeous pinks can be found spilling out of their box hedged borders in the formal Rose Garden and the pale pink, abundant blooms of Rosa Irene Watts parade either side of the Rose Walk. In the Herbaceous Borders many red hued shrub roses in the beds are complemented by rich red climbing roses on the eighteenth century walls, while in the pool garden the unusual silver sheened petals of Rose Burgundy Ice charmingly mirror the gleam of the water. Such is the profusion of roses at this time that even the front of the house is covered in the pink tinged, creamy yellow flowers of the climbing Rosa Gloire de Dijon. Over the Special Rose Week there will be the opportunity to take a rose themed walk round the gardens with the Head Gardener and there is a great selection of potted roses, from 25 times Chelsea Gold Medal winners Peter Beales Roses, available to buy, as well as rose themed gifts from the Shop – even the menu in the café features rose inspired dishes over this week!

HOW ART CAN HELP PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM BRAIN INJURY HEADWAY EAST SUSSEX ART EXHIBITION AT THE JUBILEE LIBRARY, BRIGHTON Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Headway East Sussex, the Newickbased charity that offers rehabilitation and support services for people suffering from brain injuries, will be exhibiting its HEADSCAPES art exhibition at the Jubilee Library in Brighton on 11th – 17th June during library opening hours. Art as a therapy stimulates many parts of the brain on both the right and left sides, verbal and non-verbal, which works to improve the links between the component parts of the brain to make it stronger. Many people who never thought they could draw or paint discover their creative side by trying their hand at various forms of art. Sessions are inspired by accomplished artists and supported by art therapy volunteers who are trained to help clients explore the emotions and feelings they are experiencing and to express them through art. Claire Benson, Director of Rehabilitation and Reablement at Headway East Sussex, said: “HEADSCAPES demonstrates how art can help relieve tension and anxiety by focusing on the present. Communication and social skills can also be improved by working as part of a group.” “Artworks provide a visual reminder of the emotions that went into their creation and can help our clients to come to terms with their brain injury”. Headway East Sussex provide a full range of day services, offering tailored rehabilitation and reablement programmes, as well as a variety of advice and support services to those affected across the whole of East Sussex including Brighton and Hove and the West Sussex border.

Nursing & Care
Steve’s View on Volunteering I’m married with three children and, recently, my first grandson. I worked in marketing for many years but am now retired. I belong to Seaford Musical Theatre and have performed in various shows – The Wizard of Oz is coming up in June! I like comedy script writing and am also a member of the wonderful Archway Choir in Seaford.
When choosing your care home or nursing home, you want a brand that you can trust. Chanctonbury Healthcare is owned and managed by the Sinclair family who have been looking after their elderly residents for over 20 years. You can pick from three beautiful and unique village locations within East Sussex for your new home. We have Alfriston Court in the historical and beautiful village of Alfriston, Queensmead in Polegate with its shops and amenities and Oaklands Court in the quaint village of Horam and all are situated near to the seaside towns of Eastbourne and Seaford. s Lounges and dining rooms s Personalised and delicious menus s Support of hobbies s Dedicated and caring staff All of our homes are unique but all offer well appointed and beautifully decorated rooms featuring ensuite facilities, set in well maintained grounds and gardens.
I previously volunteered for Samaritans and decided I wanted to volunteer again, so I undertook training at Association of Carers, who provide volunteer-led support to unpaid carers in East Sussex. I soon found my ideal visit with a lovely chap in Peacehaven, who I visit every Wednesday. We spend a little time having a chat and then play the fun memory game of Nostalgia. I think I’ve got the hang of approaching things and we both enjoy my visits. Volunteering really makes a difference within communities!
