Everyone knows the bird is the word!

hat is it about these rotisserie chicken restaurants that gives them a cultlike following? The smokey flavours? The alluring side dishes? Or is it the succulent meat itself? It’s certainly the best way to enjoy roast meat – the radiant heat enhances the skin’s delicious flavours and the rotating spit gently cooks the flesh to keep it succulent and tender. In fact, it’s the way it always used to be done as far back as Tudor times. I love Rotisserie chicken, there’s something hypnotizing about watching whole chickens rotating on the spit. In the last few years, the hot chicken trend has caught on like wildfire and Saint Chicken is sure to become the gold standard for hot chicken in Sussex. The dining area is set over two parts with the rotisserie grill on one side, and a well stocked bar on the other. Gin is once again the current tipple of choice and Saint Chicken offers 21 different brands. From herbal and fruit flavours to seaweed and sake infusions, gin’s diversity is most definitely the key to its charm.

The restaurant is beautifully designed, and the lighting is a vintage style creating a cosy environment. The staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and professional, setting the tone for some happy dining. Choose your Quarter, Half or Whole Chicken and combine from a selection of tasty sides. The chicken is succulent, the chips crisp, the home made coleslaw, corn-on-the-cob and even the green salad all exceed expectations. If you are ready for sheer indulgence the desert selection is sure to please. We chose the cheese cake and white chocolate brownie served with ice cream. Decadent, rich and exquisitely presented, this is everything you’d expect from the greatest of comfort foods. Saint Chicken is the brainchild of Solomon Parker and Keir Halliday. Their formula is a simple, ever-evolving menu, at a fair price, with roast chicken at its heart. If you’re fond of fowl and feeling peckish, head down to Saint Chicken...... Highly reccommended... An Amazing Addition To The St Leonards And Hastings Dining Scene

A

s face-lifts go, The Royal is right up there with some of Hollywood’s leading stars. The building and interior are almost unrecognisable from it’s previous incarnation and it’s obvious the money has been spent well. We set out to see if this St Johns Road stalwart matches the culinary standards of its new super-stylish surroundings? The Royal is perfectly located right at the end of Kings Road, St Leonards, opposite Warrior Square Station and in an area known for its array small independent eateries. The modern bar area is decorated in a stylish swathe of tile, mirrors and glittering bottles, and the restaurant is dominated by high ceilings, polished dark wood floors vintage lighting and comfortable leather banquettes. The cosy family atmosphere certainly rubs off on the customers, and ensures that everyone receives a warm welcome. If you are looking for classic British cuisine

027_December027.indd 1

with a Mediterranean twist, look no further. The traditional & creative gastronomy of Greek ingredients are combined in new and beautiful way encouraging a sharing attitude to dining. They have an extensive and exciting meze menu, so sharing dishes are definitely the way to go. Whether you’re looking for a simple pub lunch or a new twist on an old classic, the menu skips between Greek and British, cherry-picking treats along the way. Mains are divided into a variety of traditional Mediterranean meat dishes, British standards as well as burgers, steak and vegetarian options. The food is elegant and sophisticated; of exceptional high quality and very reasonably priced. We can recommend the Loaded Nachos with Chicken starter - Nachos topped with grilled chicken, Cheddar cheese, jalapenos and sour cream. We had a big appetite so this was followed by a main sharing dish of Cyprus Souvlaki & Sheftalia: A Mix of

Grilled chicken skewers and Sheftalia (homemade pork sausages) served with pitta bread, Tzatziki and Greek salad. Desserts are as exciting as the rest of the menu; try the Sticky Toffee Pudding, it’s delightful. The food at The Royal is outstanding, the service is one of a kind and its also reasonably priced..... See you there soon. .... The What’s On Magazine Team.

We had just finished the last of the Christmas shopping and were loading it into the car when we decided a nice relaxing late lunch would be a perfect end to the day. So we decided to pop into Callenders. We took a quiet table by the fabulous Christmas Tree, I do love the fresh smell of a real tree. I ordered a glass of warming mulled wine, while he mulled over the menu. Cinnamon & Mandarin Roast Duck Breast looked good to me. The always superb pan-seared Liver & Bacon for him I was about to guess, when he suggested he might opt for one of the top quality char-grilled steaks. Fillet, Tuna, Venison, Sirloin and T-bone. “Difficult choice?” I asked. “No, easy, but if I have the Venison do you promise not to tell Santa?”

The Bell at Iden is a family run business, husband and wife with our 1yr old daughter. Our charming family run pub is great for meeting up with friends for a drink or relaxing in our restaurant with some delicious home cooked food. We served home cooked hearty meals, have fine wines, cask ales and continental lagers. We are child and dog friendly and have two beautiful B&B rooms in a converted barn in our garden so very quiet and secluded.

An Australian Adventure

F

with Southern Cross Travel

or many people, a holiday to Australasia is a ‘Once in a lifetime’ journey, but once you start planning your holiday to this magnificent country, you will soon realise you have only just scratched the surface of what Australia has to offer. That is where the travel experts at Southern Cross Travel come in! The ‘Aussie Specialists’ at Southern Cross Travel have lived, worked and travelled extensively within Australia and New Zealand, and have over 36 years’ experience creating dream holidays ‘Down Under’. With first-hand knowledge, experience and a burning passion for these amazing destinations, who better to discuss your tailor-made holiday plans with?

From the endless space and changing colours of the Australian outback and Red Centre, to the vibrant cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Darwin and Cairns, the largest Reef system in the World, indigenous heritage and rock art, world-famous vineyards, stunning coastal drives and beautiful beaches, Australia is a country so diverse you’ll need an expert to ensure you make the most of your holiday Down Under. Why not start on the West Coast and visit the beautiful city of Perth and the wineries of Margaret River before boarding the luxury Indian Pacific train to Adelaide? After crossing the expansive Nullarbor Plain and enjoying Off Train Excursions (included in your journey) which are specifically designed to fit in with the train timetable, you will arrive refreshed and ready to explore the pretty city of Adelaide and the famous vineyards of the Barossa Valley. Pick up a car and drive the magnificent Great Ocean Road to Melbourne, stopping for a few nights en-route to explore this stunning coastline.

On arrival in Melbourne, experience this city of arts, culture and coffee over a few days before catching the train to the beautiful capital city of Canberra. Often missed off shorter itineraries, Canberra is a great place to explore. There are fantastic museums here, and very pretty scenery so we recommend a 2-night stay if time allows. As the sun rises, re-board your train to iconic Sydney. Alternatively, enjoy a scenic coastal drive via Phillip Island, Lakes Entrance, Eden and Jervis Bay, famous for white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters teaming with native Australian marine life and wildlife including dolphins, whales, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats and many rare species.

In the iconic city of Sydney you might like to climb the Harbour Bridge, take in a show at the Opera House or take a cruise on Sydney Harbour on one of the hop on and off ferries, or enjoy the beach life in Bondi or Manly which sits harmoniously alongside the fast pace of the city. For those with more time, head north to the Whitsunday Islands for a spot of sunbathing, and then on to Cairns to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest. Don’t forget about the Red Centre, taking in Uluru and Alice Springs before boarding the luxury Ghan train through the outback to Darwin.

Regarded as one of the world’s great train journeys, the Ghan is also available from Darwin to Adelaide. This epic 4 day / 3 night, 2979km journey will take you to some of the most remote yet captivating parts of Australia in style and luxury. In Darwin enjoy a sunset harbour cruise, visit Kakadu National Park, swim in a waterfall in Litchfield National Park, and see ancient Rock Art in Arnhemland. End your holiday in awe of the wonderful, diverse culture this country offers.

You may like to fly on to New Zealand, spend time in Indonesia or return via Asia for a stopover on your way home. Here at Southern Cross Travel we regularly work with our preferred independent local tour operator, ANZCRO, who offer an unprecedented range of accommodation, transport and sightseeing options across Australia and New Zealand from flights, rail travel, car hire and motorhome rentals to tailor-made, luxury holidays and escorted tours. T

hrough life, if you are lucky, you may have some wonderful and memorable experiences. We had one of those today. From being collected from E Grinstead Station then meeting the two gorgeous horses (Tommie and Charlie). After the first glass of champagne (the rest of the bottle followed with lunch) we enjoyed a good 45min ride in a 150 year old barouche. We were then pointed in the direction of our picnic area - via the goats (for which we were given a basket of ‘goat’ goodies for Norah Batty and her two friends). After following a rough track, we came upon a ‘paradise in the wood’. Tables, chairs, gourmet picnic, a bottle of wine, lovely cushions, a covered spacious relaxation area with what can only be described as an enormous sofa area with magazines, games, maps etc.. Oh, we could go on and on, but it was perfect. So much thought and preparation had gone into the picnic area….and - a wonderful, quality and filling picnic, plus chilled wine. We will certainly return - perhaps for the next visit a winter fire pit experience. We have recommended many places and experiences throughout the world but, if you want a personal, relaxing day with a unique experience of a horse-drawn carriage ride, then we cannot recommend anything more highly. Just go!!

Bolster Cup for vintage ‘specials’ to join 76th Members’ Meeting

A

n exciting new race for vintage-inspired ‘specials’ will join the bill at the 76th Members’ Meeting at the Goodwood Motor Circuit on March 17-18. The Bolster Cup, named after Autosport Magazine’s founding technical editor John Bolster, will cater for a unique and eclectic mix of home-built cars inspired by the machines that competed at Worcestershire’s legendary Shelsley Walsh hillclimb and the Surrey speedbowl at Brooklands during the 1920s and ’30s. Bolster, who died in 1984, was one of the pioneers of ‘specials’. He made his name before the war with the super-spindly, super-light and super-quick ‘Bloody Mary’, a wooden-framed, JAP motorcycle-engined, chain-driven creation that he shared with brother Richard. After the war ‘Bloody Mary’ reappeared, although by then Bolster was racing more exotic machinery. He suffered a huge accident in the ex-Prince Bira ERA R5B ‘Remus’ during the 1949 British Grand Prix at Silverstone and it was while recuperating that he hatched a plan with Gregor Grant to publish Autosport every week. He went on to test and review road and racing cars for many years. Coincidentally, nearly 50 years after Bolster’s infamous crash, R5B won the opening race at Goodwood’s inaugural 1998 Revival Meeting with then-custodian Ludovic Lindsay at the wheel.

Placing Your Classic Car In Safe Hands It has been over 30 years since Graham Stevens started his own garage business. His father who was an engineer and keen classic car enthusiast inspired this interest from a young age and so Graham has always had a passion for classic cars. Graham trained at a British Leyland, MG, Jaguar main agents working on many of the classic cars he does now, only of course then, they were everyday transport. The type of tasks undertaken were pre-delivery inspections, fault finding, rectifications, engine rebuilds and general repairs to transmissions, suspension, steering etc. as well as servicing and MOT work. Graham started his business in 1978. Over the years working on MGs became a speciality and EMGC expertise is used on MG models old and news well as many other classic car marques.

A grid of 30 cars of all shapes and sizes, reflecting the extraordinary creativity of their engineers, will do battle in the Bolster Cup around the fast sweeps of the 2.4-mile Motor Circuit on race day – Sunday March 18th. The grid will include a radial-engined Morgan, a 12-litre V8 Hispano Suiza Amilcar, a thundering Delage powered by a 27-litre V12 Hispano engine, a giant-killing supercharged Austin 7 and an amazing array of GN, Frazer Nash and Bentley specials. www.goodwood.com

Stars come out to support annual battersea dogs & cats home

Collars & Coats gala ball Amanda Holden, Paul O’Grady, David Gandy, Jennifer Saunders joined UB40 and host of four-legged friends at paw-tactular event raising funds to support beloved dog and cat charity.

S

tars of TV, film, literature and fashion came together tonight to celebrate and recognise the work of the worldfamous animal welfare charity Battersea Dogs & Cats Home at its annual spectacular fundraising Collars & Coats Gala Ball. Now in its 9th year, the highly-anticipated gala - regarded as one of the most unique and enthralling charity events of the year - welcomed over 700 supporters of the charity to the star-studded event. This year’s event is hosted by Battersea Ambassadors Amanda Holden and Paul O’Grady at Battersea Evolution in London. The Gala celebrated and recognised many rehoming success stories and the dedicated hard work of the team that rescues, cares for and rehomes over 7,000 dogs and cats each year. Giving guests paws for thought, the popular ‘Doggy Guard of Honour’ – a parade of past and present Battersea canine friends – greeted animal-loving guests on the red-carpet, including Battersea Ambassadors David Gandy and Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Jennifer Saunders, Harry Hill, Joanna Scanlan, Jackie St Clair, Rosie Marcel and Guy Henry. Guests were treated to a spectacular night of entertainment including exclusive performances by legendary reggae band UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue, who took to the stage to perform their classic songs, and Mica Paris

who performed My One Temptation and I Never Felt Like This Before. Highlighting the work and achievements of the Home, during the ceremony guests heard how the funds being raised through the Collars & Coats Gala Ball and the auction help support vulnerable animals through the charity, and were introduced to stories of past and current canine residents who have greatly benefited from being in the care of the Home, including the story of abandoned bulldog Chester whose life was saved by Battersea; Bulldog Chester arrived at Battersea in August after his owners could no longer afford his medical bills, which were much needed as he was struggling with an array of health issues commonly associated with the breed – Chester was struggling to breathe, had sore eyes and severe skin fold dermatitis. Thanks to the fantastic care of the Veterinary team at Battersea, Chester was able to receive much-needed surgery that transformed his life forever, and after spending 50 days at the London Battersea site, Chester has now been rehomed to a loving family in West Yorkshire, where he has been renamed Winston. Chester appeared at the event on stage with his proud new owners. Battersea Ambassador Amanda Holden said: “I’ve had a brilliant evening hosting Battersea’s spectacular Collars & Coats Gala Ball. I’ve met some amazing dogs

who have thankfully found loving new homes thanks to the remarkable staff at Battersea. They do a wonderful job in caring for vulnerable animals and the support we’ve received tonight will go a long way in helping thousands more.” Battersea Ambassador David Gandy said: “It’s been a fantastic night celebrating the achievements of Battersea. They provide endless amounts of love and support to innocent dogs and cats and I’m so thankful for the care they have given to my dog Dora when she arrived at the Home. I couldn’t imagine life without her now.” Claire Horton, Battersea’s Chief Executive said: “Tonight has been a wonderful way to show off the remarkable work of Battersea. Amanda and Paul have done an outstanding job in hosting the evening and we couldn’t ask for better support from our incredible guests who have enjoyed performances by the very talented UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue, and Mica Paris. “Collars & Coats is one of the most important nights for the charity and the money raised tonight will go towards helping innocent animals who so desperately need our help. Battersea cared for over 7,000 abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats last year and its events like this that enable our staff and volunteers to look after so many.” Find us on Youtube (What’s On Media) and see more coverage of the night.

SkinPulse Baby E:Motion also e-motion- Technology, Fast & Effective e-motion technology is a breakthrough in the safe & effective delivery of SHR light energy in the treatment of both hair reduction and skin rejuvenation. Incorporating a unique “wanding” action the clinician will repeatedly “sweep” the SHR hand piece over the target area whilst delivering the fast-pulse, low-energy light directly into the skin. There is no discomfort or epidermal damage to clients, even in for the darkest skin types.

Vascular/Rosacea

It is possible to treat this unattractive skin condition cosmetically. This is done by shooting a controlled light pulse onto the affected area. The light pulse is absorbed in the dark-red, oxygen-rich blood of the vessel by the haemoglobin and converted into heat. This causes a sudden heating of the vessel, which clots the blood and “welds” the vessel shut. The body’s lymphatic system breaks down the coagulated blood into its constituent parts and transports them away naturally.

Skin Rejuvenation

The gentle treatment offered by the devices from Cosmedico Medical Systems stimulates the formation of new collagen fibres. This has a visible smoothing effect on lines. The treatment stimulates the skin cells to start producing skin-tautening collagen and elastin again. The result is healthy, young and fresh-looking skin.

Pigmentation

Benign skin pigmentations can be treated very efficiently using IPL or IPL/RF technology. This involves exposing excessive pigments to highly energetic intensive pulsed light. The pigment change is shed bit by bit in the form of tiny skin flakes.

Acne

Treating acne with IPL or IPL/RF technology is all about fighting the propioni bacteria that cause the inflammation and reducing the size of the sebaceous glands and the quantity of sebum they produce.

Birds of a feather..

D

uring a cold winter’s night, birds lose a substantial proportion of their body weight and need to replenish their reserves during the day. Feeding birds at this time of year can make a huge difference to the survival of our feathered friends. Sunflower hearts, peanuts and fat balls are all high energy foods that will attract a wide variety of birds to your garden, including goldfinches, great spotted woodpeckers and long-tailed tits. It’s also vital to keep your

bird bath topped up when natural water sources are frozen over. What a privilege to watch birds in the garden and know you’re doing your bit for nature at the same time. Joe Feathers Wild Bird Care
