A Walk To Remember

2017 Rye Arts Festival

he 46th annual Rye Arts Festival between 17th September and 1st October is in line to be not just the biggest but the best ever! Whatever your interests, Rye will have something to offer - music (contemporary and classical), book talks, historical and nature walks, professional theatre, film, art exhibitions and children’s events. World class musicians from all around the globe will be coming to Rye throughout the Festival. For six years the classical music programme has been built around live opera with the hugely talented young professional singers of London-based Euphonia Studio. And they’re back again, on Saturday 30th September evening, there will be a muchanticipated performance of La Boheme by Puccini. Rannveig Karadottir, the Icelandic soprano who starred in the La Traviata at Rye in 2014. There will be a big treat courtesy of The English Concert. This is undoubtedly one of the finest, if not the best, chamber orchestras in the world. More world class musicianship is guaranteed when the phenomenal choir Tenebrae sing at St Mary’s Church. Kenneth Broberg, the young American winner of the recent 2017 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition is jetting in from Missouri USA for a concert on 20th September.

The contemporary music organisers have booked some of the very best talent from around the world. On Saturday 30th Ari Eisenger flies in from Pennsylvania. Ari is reckoned to be one of the first acoustic blues and ragtime guitar players on the planet! Period! Malinky, the Scottish band, are coming south of the border for a one-off gig of traditional folk music that mixes both joy and heartache. While London folk five-piece Stick in the Wheel are not to be missed. Singer/ guitarist Sarah MacQuaid arrives in Rye. Born in Spain, raised in Chicago, but now living in England, this consummate musician cannot be placed in one pigeon hole! From medieval to 1920s Cuban jazz to contemporary, her songs move around the ages, taking the audience with her on an outstanding odyssey. Make no bones about it, Sarah is not to be missed on Tuesday 26th September. This year’s varied literary programme kicks off on Saturday 16th September with Kenneth Clarke MP – the Father of the House and jazz-loving politician. And from the opposite benches comes Dame Margaret Hodge, the Labour MP who speaks on Thursday 28th. The award-winning young novelist Evie Wylde returns to the Festival on Saturday 23rd September. And local glass shopkeeper Andy McConnell will be talking about his varied life which has seen him become one of the

much-loved experts on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. He will give behind the scenes experiences from the TV show and talk about wine decanters on Friday 22nd September. The Film programme marks the 20th anniversary of Jane Austen with a screening of the cult comedy Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone, which sees the Emma storyline moved to LA in the 1990s! Check out Amy too, the Oscar-winning documentary on Amy Winehouse who died too young. Theatre also provides a focus on Jane Austen since this is the author’s bicentenary year. Karin Fernald brings her one-woman play called Jane Austen – The Early Years on Sunday 17th, which focuses of the writer’s works from her childhood and adolescence Austentatious come to town from Edinburgh. Goodwood Revival 8 - 10 September 2017 At The Goodwood Estate, Chichester, W Sussex, PO18 0PX The romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be. The Revival is the only historic race meeting to be staged entirely in period dress and is a return to the halcyon days of Goodwood as the spiritual home of British motor racing. Back for a Fantastic 6th Season The Bexhill Festival of the Sea

2nd and 3rd September Bexhill Festival of the Sea is looking forward to an exciting sixth year celebrating life near the sea and offers something for everyone. The Festival kicks off with a brilliant weekend event next to the De La Warr Pavilion with over 50 stalls highlighting local Sussex produce and global seafood cuisine, English wine, arts & crafts, local charities, marine and wildlife conservation, cooking demonstrations, free angling coaching, children’s fun fair, dancing and a fantastic line up of live music. Something for everyone! On Saturday 2nd September the Festival beach will play host to a Guinness World Record attempt with the Largest Gathering of Mermaids. To close the event is a very special concert with international stars - the fantastic Peter Knight’s Gigspanner and the wonderful Liane Carroll. 57 Gold Medals awarded at this years RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has awarded 141 medals to the gardens, floral exhibitors and Flower & Vegetable Boxes at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, sponsored by Viking Cruises. Along with 57 Gold Medals, the RHS also awarded 47 Silver-Gilt Medals, 29 Silver Medals and eight Bronze Medals across the 34-acre show which runs from 4-9 July. Designers Adam White and Andrée Davies were awarded the much sought-after title of Best Show Garden for The Zoflora & Caudwell Children’s Wild Garden. Showcasing the qualities of therapeutic outdoor spaces for children with disabilities, the garden will be rebuilt after the show at the Caudwell at Keele University which provides support for children with developmental disorders. Designer Andrée Davies says: “On behalf of everyone who’s been involved in this project, we are so delighted to win this award. It’s been a monumental project building this garden - we’re thrilled with the outcome and

absolutely honoured to be awarded Best Show Garden.” Adam White adds: “We can’t wait for the volunteers that did all this planting to come down this week to see how stunning the garden looks and for them to hear the public response to this wonderful wild garden.” Best Construction Award was given to the Blind Veterans UK: It’s All About Community Garden, designed by Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Dan Bowyer, and built by contractors Landform Consultants. Championing traditional craftsmanship, the vibrant garden celebrates the beneficiaries, volunteers and staff at Blind Veterans UK. Highlighting its originality and flair, Bill Wilder’s Elements of Life took home Best Conceptual Garden. The garden takes viewers underground to explore plant roots and scientific soil composition. Meanwhile, in the brand new category of Gardens for a Changing World, Future Gardens.London: London Glades, created by Andreas Christodoulou

and Jonathan Davies, was judged to be best highlighting how to relinquish control and allow for the natural process to take centre stage. A total of 50 Gold Medals were presented to nurseries in the Floral Marquee, as well as 36 Silver-Gilt, 23 Silver and four Bronze medals. Brighter Blooms, Dibleys Nurseries and W.S. Warmenhoven were among the Gold Medal winners. The prestigious Best Exhibit in the Floral Marquee went to orchid specialists Vacherot & Lacoufle, while Marshalls Malmaisons was awarded Best Plant Heritage Exhibit for their heritage carnations display. In addition, David Austin Roses Ltd took the title for Best Rose Exhibit, Hooksgreen Herbs won Best Cook & Grow Exhibit and the New Design Award was presented to Fernatix. For the best Flower & Vegetable Box Award, Esher Molesey Garden Society won the title for their Centenary Celebration flower box which celebrates the Society’s 100th anniversary.

‘Social Snacking’ Facebook Users Update Their Status to Feel Less Lonely

When friends – real, live friends, not “Facebook Friends” – told me about Facebook a few years ago and urged me to sign up, I asked them what it was like. Most of them talked about it in superlatives, saying how great it was to be able to stay in touch with friends all over the world and update them on the latest news and photos from their lives. But one passed along a warning, which unfortunately I did not heed. He said, “It’s the Internet counterpart of junk food.” Now a new study indicates that my friend may have been correct. How often do you update your Facebook status? And why? Those were the questions that psychologist Fenne große Deters, of the Universitat Berlin wanted to examine scientifically. So she and colleagues from the University of Arizona recruited 100 students, all Facebook users naturally, and asked them to complete surveys that measured their levels of happiness, loneliness, and depression. The students also gave the researchers the ability to monitor their Facebook activity by “friending” a dummy user account set up for the experiment. Then the student participants in the study

were sent an analysis of their regular posting habits in terms of “status updates” – words or photos posted to their Facebook “Wall” – and half of the students were asked to double the number of their status updates for the next week. The other half of the students was instructed to post as usual. During that week, both groups filled out an online questionnaire at the end of each day about their moods and their feelings of social connectedness. The group that posted more status updates reported feeling significantly less lonely. Their overall happiness and depression levels didn’t change, “suggesting that the effect is specific to experienced loneliness,” as Deters puts it. Even more interesting, these decreased loneliness levels did not seem to be affected by either the response or non-response to the status updates. The students who were updating their statuses more often felt less lonely whether they received “Likes” or “Comments” on their updates or not. The researchers, in a paper published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, concluded that the positive benefits of “status updates” were that they enabled the people who made them to feel more socially interconnected, and thus less lonely. The writing of a status update seemed to be the factor that influenced the students’ mood and made them feel more socially connected, not how the update was received. They coined the term “social

snacking” to describe this behavior. “Similar to a snack temporarily reducing hunger until the next meal, social snacking may help tolerate the lack of ‘real’ social interaction for a certain amount of time.” Not that that’s a bad thing At least posting to Facebook isn’t fattening, after all. And if in our busy and often mobile society, with friends scattered all over the world, we can feel a little more connected to friends simply by checking in with them on a social networking program, there is theoretically little harm in it. Theoretically. There have been studies, after all, that indicate that The More Facebook Friends You Have, the More Stressed Out You May Be as a result of a growing fear of saying the wrong thing and offending someone. And another study presented at a recent psychology symposium indicated that sometimes Facebook has a negative effect on users because it inspires “social comparison.” After people in this study who had many “Facebook Friends” read these Friends’ status updates, tests indicated that the people reading them had lower self esteem and tended to feel worse about their own achievements and accomplishments. So maybe the answer if you’re feeling a little lonely is to make more updates to your own Facebook status, but if you have a lot of “Facebook Friends,” don’t read theirs. Just a suggestion…
