Bexhill’s Roaring Success A vibrant Period Event On Bexhill’s Elegant Edwardian Sea Front & Town

exhill On Sea turned it’s clocks back to Bexhill’s heyday with a fantastic Roaring Twenties. Thousands of people of all ages came out to enjoy the many attrations throughout the town and on the seafront. Organiser Roger Crouch - the man who started The Hastings Pirate Day, teamed up with Rother District Council to plan the July fun day which included airborne displays by the famous Breitling Wing Walkers and other flying teams, a 1920s band, vintage fun fair, music from the Royal Navy marching band of HMS Nelson, donkey rides for children, and a host of other vintage theamed entertainment. The Prohibition Stuntmen were a highlight of the day performing an American Gangster 1920s heist on the Little British Teashop in St Leonards Road. Gangsters were arrested by US cops and taken away in a 1920s NYC Taxi.... Great fun! Roger Crouch said ‘The day is just about celebrating Bexhill and bringing the community together for something fun. It would be nice to imagine this event growing in size every year.’

Bexhill’s Anglo Continental Market Sat & Sun 20/21 September 2014 Bexhill 100 Motoring Club has taken over the running of this unique event, on a voluntary basis and profits will be in aid of local charitable organisations. Now in it’s 15th year the Bexhill Anglo Continental Market is very popular both with shoppers and traders. Devonshire Road is closed to traffic and for two weekends a year (May & September) becomes the venue for a real Continental Street Market. Around 50 traders at the market bring the taste and smells of the Continent to Bexhill. We have genuine French traders and many local traders and crafts people including soft furnishings, home made cakes, handbags, cheeses, shoes, scarves, crockery, basketwork and much more. Also, as in previous years, a few classic cars will be on display. Make a day of it. Enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants or cafes, come and visit the De La Warr Pavilion or Bexhill Museum, or just have a leisurely stroll around the market, shops and seafront. To Buy-to-let or not….. that is the question. We have all heard tales about people with property portfolios who are now worth a fortune. But is property still a good investment? As with any investment, the answer is uncertain though the market’s favourable right now and the future is looking bright. There are some factors we can bear in mind before investing. With Buy-to-let investments, you earn in two ways: from the rental income and also from the value of your property increasing. OK, It goes without saying that you will lose money if the property is not let for any period or if property prices drop. Research is the key. This involves locating the right property in an area where property prices are expected and predicted to rise and then determining the potential rental yield. At the same time, you’ll need to research the risks and the costs you will have to pay both preparing the property for its first tenant and also subsequent maintenance costs. You will receive income from the property in the form of a monthly rental payment from your tenants. The rent you can expect to receive from a buy-to-let depends mainly on the property, the location and market rental costs in the area. As well as the initial purchase costs including fees and deposit, you should consider the regular outgoings such as mortgage repayments; letting agent’s fees; specialist insurance and annual safety checks. It has been predicted that up to a million more renters will be looking for homes in the next five years: adding to a rental pool that has doubled since 2001. Many of these new tenants are expected to be hard-working professionals frozen out of the mortgage market by the controversial tough new ‘affordability tests’ imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority. So you have bought your property, what next? From next year all lettings agents in England and Wales will be required to belong to a ‘consumer redress’ scheme such as the one run by The Property Ombudsman. It provides a free, fair and independent service for dealing with unresolved disputes for both sides. This new, obligatory, measure will help drive up professional standards in the industry and all tenants who rent a property through an agent (not directly through private landlords) will be afforded higher levels of protection than if dealing directly with
the property owner as well as direct access to the Ombudsman service. Obviously, tenants will be more likely to rent through a professional lettings agent and, at the same time, the Landlord can relax and allow the letting agent to deal with the day to day management of the property while they watch their investment grow.

very last Friday of the month since April ELF a festival of music and the arts has providing a forum for local musicians, artists, dramatists and comedians to showcase their talents in a variety of venues around the historical 1066 town of Battle. The Five main venues have hosted six musicians between 7pm and 10pm and we can report that it has been an amazing success so far. August is set to be the best yet with activities starting on The Abbey Green from 2pm and Live music again in the five main venues in the evening from 7pm till late. Friday August 29th on The Abbey Green we have from 2pm till 5pm.... • Various performances by local Singers and Dramatists. • A FREE drama workshop for children age 9 to 15. • A performance by some of the children from The Abbey School Choir. • Face painting. Outside Mrs Burtons Restaurant and Tearoom we have ‘Artists in Action’, local painters will be demonstrating their skills from 2pm till 7pm. From 5pm till 7pm there is live music and a Barbecue outside Mrs Burton’s. Many of the retailers in the town will stay open later and have fringe activities and special offers just for the ELF event. Fruits of New England, Western Front war trenches and a wildlife garden are just a few of the inspiring show features to see at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Inspired by remembrance Sunday services and designed by Steve Mann of Groundbreaking Projects, the Lest We Forget Garden featured in the Grow Zone commemorated the outbreak of the First World War while also remembering those who fought. The garden was a recreation of the trenches and landscape of the Western Front featuring a working First World War tank. Designed by Charlotte Murrell, the Get a Taste for New England Garden celebrated the home of Ocean Spray’s cranberries. Visitors learned how the cranberry crops make it from farms to tables around the world in this tasty exhibit. Visitors saw a true cranberry wet harvest with different water areas mimicking New England wetlands. In addition to this, the Long Water hosted a
floating cranberry harvest installation in the shape of the quintessential English rose. The Visible Garden, sponsored by Viking Cruises and designed by Stephen Hall, demonstrated the ways in which we can attract wildlife to our gardens by planting both native and non-native flowers. The feature was divided into two areas, filled with native plants and ornamental cultivars respectively. The native planted area featured shrubs and flowers, along with ornamental plants suitable for bees and hoverflies, highlighting the work of the RHS Plants for Bugs project. The nonnative area of the garden included a water butt to collect rain and a seating area with beanbags, lanterns and a chiminea outdoor oven as well as a bug box, and a log pile to provide shelter to the more unusual visitors to the garden. The Quiet Mark Treehouse was the central feature at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. This exceptional acousticallydesigned structure was a once in a lifetime showcase that had to be seen to be believed. It has been specifically developed to offer a
vision of a quieter style of living, featuring the products that we all rely on, but without the unwanted noise. Nestled in a peaceful oasis of naturalistic forest planting and sculptured landscaping, designed by David Domoney of ITV’s Love Your Garden, the giant Treehouse was a special quiet escape from the noise of our busy world. Visitors could explore the Treehouse, which was made from Kebony wood and offers a beautiful sanctuary for wildlife including a bee wall, houses for solitary bees and wood stacks for frogs, toads and hedgehogs in the surrounding feature garden. Visitors learned how to encourage wildlife in their own garden whilst discovering the secrets to a peaceful, harmonious home. Sound is increasingly becoming a more important consideration when deciding what technology to buy for our homes. John Lewis’s pioneering partnership with the Quiet Mark award programme sets a new benchmark in sound quality for the next generation of high performance lownoise technology, designed to be in closer harmony with nature.

Shuna’s Vintage Clothes Shuna Harwood is a British Academy Award winning Film Costume Designer. She was also nominated for an Oscar at the 68th Academy Awards for the film Richard III in the category of Best Costumes. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, London, Shuna worked as a fashion magazine editor for for several respected magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar and a fashion illustrator working with many Newspapers and Magazines before becoming a costume designer. Shuna has worked on many films including Notting Hill (1999), Firewall (2006), Richard III (1995) and Wish You Were Here (1987). Her passion has always been collecting vintage clothes and antiques and she now enjoys buying and selling them at her shop situated at Heathfield Market on Tuesday mornings. All the care provide by St Wilfrid’s Hospice is free of charge but it costs around £11,000 every day to run the hospice services, 85 per cent of that comes through fundraising and donations to the hospice.

The Big Green Cardigan 2014 Cripps Corner - 5th-7th September 2014
The line–up has now been announced for the fourth Big Green Cardigan festival. For those who don’t know the festival, it has no musical theme; with acts from the fields of Americana to Blues and even a touch of acoustic tribal trance and a band performing 1920’s cocktail bar music. So who is playing? Just the four nominees from the British blues awards 2014, including LaVendore Rogue. The Roving Crows, who among their awards have won Band of the Year at the FATEA Music Awards and Best Live Act at The Irish Music Awards. Add in the overseas contingent of international Flamenco superstar guitarist Eduardo Niebla from Spain, and from Nashville, Buddy Mondlock whose songs have been covered by the likes of, Nanci Griffith and Garth Brooks. And let’s not forget the locals which include King Size Slim, Red Dirt Skinners, Rhythm Section, Otti Albintz and Sean de Burca, all based within 15 miles of the festival site. With 30 acts, camping, and our own ‘Green Cardigan’ real ale brewed by Franklin brewery from Bexhill it is the full festival experience, but just down the road! Eastbourne Area Epilepsy Group was formed in 2005 by Andy Evans to support people with Epilepsy, and their friends and families, in the Eastbourne Area. The group now covers East Sussex, the group attend different events all over the county. They also have a youth group for 7-17 year olds with epilepsy which meet in Eastbourne on the second Saturday of the month. The group is also there for information and raise awareness with stalls countywide and to reduce the stigma of epilepsy.

Rye Arts Festival 12th-28th September 2014

lassical and contemporary music, literary talks, historical walks, theatre, comedy, art exhibitions and children’s events are all on the menu at the 43rd annual Rye Arts Festival, which this year runs from 14 to 29th September. Classical Music highlights include the return of the Euphonia Company with a fully-staged production of Verdi’s La Traviata on 13th Sept. All the singers, including Icelandic soprano Rannnveig Karadottir in the title role, and the musicians in the full orchestra are professionals so this is a must-see event. The Festival finishes on 28th Sept with the brilliant The English Concert – one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras. Sandwiched between are many concerts including a weeklong residency by the Piatti Quartet who will also be joined by other musicians to form a quintet and sextet, as well as giving a free gig on 21st Sept in a pub, titled Beer and Beethoven. The performer won’t be Brahms and Liszt!
Among many other highlights, including the return of pianist Nikolai Demidenko, the exciting vocal group Voces8 are not to be missed, singing on 18th Sept at Winchelsea Church which might have been built for them! British jazz legends Alan Skidmore and Peter Jones will be bringing their quintet to play a tribute to Elvin Jones, John Coltrane’s drummer. There will be folk from the award-winning Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin duo; electric blues from one of the UK’s finest exponents, West Weston’s Bluesonics; and Flossie Malavialle sings every Indie band worth its salt’s self-proclaimed biggest influence Jacques Brel, plus a bit of Edith Piaf! Last, but far from least, the Rye Arts Festival’s favourite singer, raconteur and wit Cathy Jordan is back to popular demand. And she is, once again, fronting the incomparable Dervish. The varied literary programme includes Sarah Raven talking about Vita Sackville-West’s designs for the Sissinghurst garden; Jane Gardam on her Old Filth trilogy; Richard Owen on the inspiration for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover; Vicky Pryce on ‘doing porridge’ having taken her husband’s driving points; Henry Blofeld on… well, Blowers; and many more fascinating talks! Theatre is represented by When the Rain Washes, a one-man play about a young black man’s horrifying and yet inspiring life through and after independence in Zimbabwe, plus Bite-Size Plays – both of which wowed audiences at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. On a lighter note, Gyles Brandreth is back with his sidesplitting, sell-out show from the Edinburgh Fringe. And youngsters from the Rye Dance Centre will again perform at Rye College. But older Ryers can take part in Argentine Tango and Flamenco workshops – and then watch the real thing by professional and polished performers. The ever-popular Winchelsea Cellar Tours and tour of the Romney Marsh churches are back, together with the returning Rye in World War II walk, which has the added poignancy of being the 75 anniversary of the start of the conflict. There was great interest, not least from our rose hued editor, in Wealden Mobilty’s stand which they shared with Mybility, distributor of very special off road powerchairs and TerrainHopper. Pets, Wildlife, Equestrian Halliday-Sharp back on the podium at Brightling Park International Brightling Park International once again proved a happy hunting ground for Liz Halliday-Sharp last weekend (July 12/13) where three sensational results saw her and Chailey Stud take home both the 1* and 2* South East Eventers League trophies for the second year running. Podiums for Blackie (Fernhill by Night) in the CIC2* and Flynn (Cooley Cruise Control) in BE100, as well as a top-five result on Chaco’s (Cooley Ground Control) CIC1* debut, emphasised the stable’s increasing strength in depth, as well as the potential of Team Cooley USA. Halliday-Sharp’s USA Training Listed mount, Blackie, led the charge at Brightling by equalling the CIC2* second place he achieved there 12 months ago. “It’s always nice to finish on the podium,” said Liz. “Blackie now seems to be over his mid-season wobble and getting back to the sort of form we saw at the start of the year. I must admit to being a bit disappointed with the Dressage score of 45 as I know we can do a bit better than that now, but in the jumping phases he was awesome and found it easy. No-one made the optimum time Cross Country, and despite a few time faults we were one of the fastest on the day. As it turned out, second place was the best result we could have achieved anyway based on our Dressage score. I’m just happy we did enough to finish where we did and deny Oliver Townend a clean-sweep of the podium: he’s a hard man to beat! Birds of a Feather Tho’ I am mainly a “bird man” a stroll up to my local woods in Beckley on a lovely summers day can be very rewarding with the vast selection of Butterflies around. Identifying them is a different matter, sure, the more I see the easier it gets but the little critters don’t always settle for me. I have occasionally seen the *rarer* butterfly like the “Grizzled Skipper” but mostly the more common woodland species like the White/ Red Admiral, Silver-washed Fritillary, the
odd Comma, millions and millions of the Meadow Browns, the beautiful Peacock, Gatekeepers, Ringlets plus some that I was just unable to identify. An hour or two with me Lumix, me binoculars and nature sets me up nicely for the riggers of Feathers. Talking of which take a peak at the page opposite, this should be a great family day. Apart from an Owl Display with the wonderful “Owls About Town”
