Phoenix Choir are performing Felix Mendelssohn’s beautiful oratorio, Elijah, to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the composer’s death. The oratorio is based on the life of the Old Testament prophet and is often regarded as the crowning glory of Mendelssohn’s successful career, establishing itself as second only to Handel’s Messiah in the public’s affections. Despite it being a sacred work, Mendelssohn wanted his piece to have a dramatic realism where ‘personages should act and speak as if they were living things’. Michael Fields, Musical Director of Phoenix, always brings something fresh and exciting to Eastbourne with his interpretations of familiar repertoire: joined by professional soloists and orchestra, this is sure to be one such memorable performance.

Rye’s newest restaurant wins prestigious dining award
S
alts Restaurant, situated in the Rye Lodge Hotel have already scooped their first award since opening 6 months ago. The OpenTable dining award is designed to celebrate top-rated restaurants based on the nominations from OpenTable customers. Attila Csicso (Head Chef ) said “The award was totally unexpected after being open for less than three weeks but extremely appreciated. There are some really great restaurants in the town and it was our intention from the outset to do something slightly different. Our restaurant is small with only 24 covers, so I wanted to create more of a chef’s table experience with dishes that have a certain ‘wow’ factor. Several of our dishes incorporate ‘molecular gastronomy’ such as the Pork Belly topped
with Apple Caviar. The Apple Caviar, which is the molecular gastronomy part, is made from local farm pressed Biddenden apple juice”. Prior to moving to Rye, Attila spent 4 years in London working in Tom Aitken’s restaurants as well as working at the Michelin starred Club Gascon. Salts restaurant is his first position as a head chef with full artistic control of the menu. James de Courcy (proprietor) said “Attila and his team have worked extremely hard in preparing such an interesting menu and I’m delighted that they have been recognized for their efforts so early on.” Salts takes its name from the Rye Salt marshes that the hotel and restaurant overlook. The restaurant is open 6 days a week from 7pm to 11pm with last orders at 9.30pm.

The Community Support Worker goes with the person with dementia and their carer to visit activities and help assess their needs and promote a choice of activities. Following a successful introduction of an activity the service works with the carer and/ or Social Worker to secure funding and provide a phased handover to a suitably skilled and experienced service provider or Personal Assistant. This then provides the carer with a regular break. The service supports people with dementia and their carers to link with services and activities in the community which can be difficult due to the challenges of their illness or caring role. Rich is the star of the critically acclaimed BBC Four documentaries Rich Hall’s California Stars, Rich Hall’s You Can Go To Hell, I’m Going To Texas and Rich Hall’s Inventing the Indian. His critically acclaimed grouchy, deadpan style has established him as a master of absurdist irony and the king of rapid-fire wit. The award-winning Montana native renowned for his expertly crafted tirades and quick fire banter with audiences and delightful musical sequences saddles up and hitches his wagon to tour the British Isles once again.
T
his is a comedian who’s plain spoken growling indignation and acerbic observations have an unerring talent for hitting his targets with precision every time, leaving his audience hanging on every word winning him fans all over the globe. Perrier (Edinburgh Comedy Festival) Award and Barry (Melbourne International Comedy Festival) Award winner Rich Hall has been described as a transatlantic messenger lampooning each country he visits with his common sense, and he is no less harsh to his homeland. Many will have seen him on the road recently as he is currently on a nationwide tour with his brilliant show, ‘Rich Hall: Live’ which continues until April 2017. Rich is the most dazzlingly funny curmudgeon in The West. Rich’s straight-talking and acerbic comedy leaves his targets reeling and his audiences in stitches.
036_January036.indd 2
He is a superb live performer..... ‘Now is the time to grab this chance to see the great man at work’ - The Guardian ‘Captivating and brilliant... ability to make the room guffaw was worthy of standing applause’ - The Sunday Mirror Critics have long praised Rich’s highly original deadpan style (which was the inspiration for the marvelously cantankerous barman, Moe Szyslak, in The Simpsons). Rich, who has presented such critically acclaimed BBC 4 documentaries as ‘Rich Hall’s Continental Drifters’, ‘Rich Hall’s The Dirty South’, ‘How The West Was Lost’, ‘Rich Hall’s Californian Stars’, ‘Rich Hall’s Cattle Drive’ and ‘Rich Hall’s Gone Fishing’, begins by underlining how excited he is to be performing live once again.

Rich, can you tell us about the tour... “I love the fact that when a live show is over, it’s gone. It’s happened, and it will never happen like that again. It can’t be replicated. That’s a great magical moment. In every single show, there are always two or three moments where I’m thinking, ‘Wow, where did that come from?’ You’re constantly thinking on your feet.” Rich, who is also an accomplished author and has released three books, ‘Magnificent Bastards’, ‘I Blame Society’ and ‘Things Snowball’, all published by Abacus Books, thrives on the spontaneity of live comedy. The comedian, who has made very successful appearances on such TV shows as ‘QI’ (BBC1/2), ‘Live At The Apollo’ (BBC1), ‘Channel 4’s Comedy Gala Live At The O2’, ‘Have I Got News For You’ (BBC1), ‘Stand Up For The Week’ (Channel 4), ‘Otis Lee Crenshaw – London Not Tennessee’ (BBC2) and
“I’m really looking forward to going to the nether regions of Scotland,” says Rich, who won two Emmys writing for The David Letterman Show in the US.
released two very successful standup DVD’s in 2001 and 2009 through Universal Pictures UK and has recently just released another, explains, “I try to tap into what is happening locally and address that musically by writing an improvised song based on the town I’m in.”
“Every year I try to tour out of the way places. Last year it was Norway. This year it is the Hebrides. I like to go to places where I’m not worried about competition from other comedians! Audiences also love the fact that you have made the effort to play there.”
Audiences really appreciate this bespoke comedy. “Once they realise you’re not just trotting out your regular act, people think, ‘He’s made a real effort. He’s on our side, so we’re on his side.” Then you can take them anywhere.
One of the many unique features of Rich’s act is that he goes out of his way to find out about the town he is playing in and then improvises a song on stage about it. He goes the extra mile to tailor-make his material for that particular venue.
“I like to do something custom-made every night, otherwise you would just be like a robot. That can really wear you down. Nobody gets more sick of hearing their own voice than a comedian.”
‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’ (BBC2), is especially glad that his 2016 tour includes the Scottish Highlands

Rich, who was also enjoyed huge success as his country and western musician alter ego, Otis Lee Crenshaw, observes, “When you’re improvising a song, you think, ‘I may never do this on again, but it’s a special moment for everyone here’. “You want to reach the point where audiences say, ‘I’d like to see that guy again’. You want to deliver the goods and be Old Reliable.” The stand-up is one of only a handful of performers who can genuinely combine comedy and music in one act. To that end, Rich has bought his incredibly entertaining ‘Hoedown’ show around the UK for a number of limited dates on this tour including 4 nights at the Tobacco Factory Theatre in Bristol, 3 nights at The Playhouse in Norwich, and finally bringing 2016 to a close with 4 nights at The Lowry in Salford Quays. He says that, “I will have such a great collection of musicians on stage for the Hoedown. Having a full band there makes it a much richer experience – if you’ll pardon the phrase! Music works in my show because it connects with people on a very personal level. A lot of comedians just come on stage and say, ‘I was on a bus and I passed so and so. But that’s just a reaction to something rather than a specific, custom-made

song that engages people. The magic is more important than the material. People really respond to that.” The stand-up’s other trademark is anger, and he is capable of using that to very effective comic ends. Rich comments that, “It is always good to articulate anger. “If you don’t, you’re merely preaching to the converted and asking, ‘Have you ever noticed?’ Yes, we are paying you to notice things we haven’t already noticed!” Rich has just been in the US making‘How to Kill a President’, another fascinating sounding BBC4 documentary, this time about negative campaigning in the
Presidential race. American politics is bound to feature in his new show. The comic will certainly be addressing the controversial new president Donald J Trump. “There is a lot of gnashing of teeth about Trump, but it’s merely entertainment. He’s doing what he has to do to get attention. He is saying the most outrageous things and tapping into a collective sense of anger.” But, Rich adds, “Eventually Trump will come under the same scrutiny as everyone else. ‘So you want to build a giant wall along the border and make the Mexicans pay for it? How exactly are you going to do that, then?’”
The comedian reckons that, “If the people running had their way, no one would watch any campaign at all. But when Trump comes along, everyone has to react and talk about issues – and politicians hate that. God forbid that they have to talk about issues!” Before he has to go, Rich reflects once more on what he loves so much about touring. “I’m not a big showbiz hound, but for me being on stage is the most satisfying thing imaginable.”

Health, Beauty & Weddings
Prevention is better than cure… The Wellington Health & Wellbeing Centre offers a wide-range of services to help you look after yourself and maintain your health and wellbeing. Alex is self-employed and works as a gardener. He was experiencing pain in his hip, which disturbed his sleep and caused him to take a day off work. A friend suggested he see Hannah Collinson, the physiotherapist at the centre. Hannah gave him a deep tissue massage and exercises to help build strength in the muscles in this area.
Alex said: “I noticed an immediate improvement after seeing Hannah, sleeping through the night for the first time in a week. I did my exercises and went to see her again a week later, she gave me another deep tissue massage and stretching exercises to do when I’m at work. I’m so pleased I went to see her, if I hadn’t it could have got much worse and prevented me from working for weeks. I feel empowered to know how to take better care of myself.”

How to turn your New Year’s resolutions into reality
I
By Sarah Corrie
t’s January, the likelihood is that you ate, drank and spent too much over Christmas and made resolutions at New Year to live a healthier and fitter life in 2017. But in the back of your mind, you’re aware you’ve done this before only to find that by March, your good intentions are a distant memory, your gym membership is gathering dust and your bad habits are returning. So what can you do to make sure that by the dawn of 2018, you feel that you’ve made progress…?
you’re carrying is often the first step to making a long term change. I knew I’d put on a lot of weight, because my clothes had stopped fitting and when I saw photos of myself, I was shocked at how big I looked. At the beginning of 2014 I plucked up the courage to weigh myself and discovered I had put on nearly three stone. Over the next year I made changes to my diet, cutting out sugar, caffeine, wheat and dairy as much as possible, without being too restrictive. I began to feel better and have more energy and lost nearly a stone.
Losing weight
Getting Fit
Losing weight quickly isn’t ideal and most people find they soon put it back on again. It’s much better to lose weight slowly, around one pound a week is a sensible rate. Although that might not seem like very much, if you maintain this rate for a whole year, you will have lost three and a half stone! The best way to lose weight is to combine healthy eating with regular exercise. Exercise increases our metabolic rate and encourages our bodies to use the fuel it consumes more efficiently. Learning to eat more healthily helps us maintain a healthy weight and gives us more energy. It doesn’t mean that you can’t have treats and enjoy yourself, it’s about being aware of what you consume and checking in with yourself on a regular basis that you’re not falling into bad habits and if you are, taking a step back, thinking about why and steering yourself back on track again. Facing the reality of how much extra weight
043_January043.indd 1
At the beginning of 2015, I made the resolution to start swimming regularly. Over the next twelve months I swam between two and four times a week and by October, had lost all the weight that I had gained. Since then, I’ve been more active and continued to eat more healthily, which has enabled me to maintain a healthy weight. To get fit and stay fit we need to do some form of regular aerobic exercise. It’s easy to build this into our day-to-day routine by walking more, taking the stairs instead of the lift and finding a form of exercise that we enjoy. Whether it’s swimming, running, playing squash or even skipping, exercise stimulates our brain to release endorphins, which helps improve our sense of wellbeing. It can be difficult to maintain the motivation to keep exercising and setting yourself a goal such as running a 5 or 10K or taking part in a swimathon can help you keep going. There are
really good training programmes on the Bupa website, that set realistic targets for gradually building up the distance you run. If you choose to raise money for a charity, it can boost your motivation even more, as you know that by taking part in the race, you will be helping others as well as yourself.
Investing in your health & wellbeing
Giving up smoking or cutting down on the amount of food or alcohol you consume will save you money, investing that money into supporting your health and wellbeing can help you achieve your goals. If your main aim is to lose weight, groups such as Slimming World and Weight Watchers can help you feel supported. If you’re giving up smoking, speak to your local pharmacy about finding a Stop Smoking Service and put support in place before you quit. Investing in looking after our health and wellbeing is something we’re often reluctant to do. Stress is one of the biggest issues facing modern society, causing both mental and physical ill health and regular exercise, eating healthily and rewarding ourselves with a regular massage, reflexology treatment or other complementary therapy can increase motivation, reduce stress and improve our overall sense of wellbeing. So as you progress through 2017, don’t try and make it alone, look for others who are also aiming to improve their health and wellbeing and seek out people who can support you on your journey.

Senior Care
A New Solution for Wealden Residents
Abbeyfield South Downs are at the forefront of organisations racing to address the worrying issues which face us and our family members as we age. With a mission to alleviate loneliness, they are dedicated to providing company, security and a happy home for older people in need, in the communities they serve. The majority of solutions being offered so far, throughout the country, are commercial options, which do deliver homes but crucially take profit away from local communities. Abbeyfield have a different approach. The not for profit organisation have successfully submitted a revised planning application for their Holdenhurst site in Mill Road, Heathfield, where they aim to provide the first ‘assisted living with Care’ flats in the town, to allow older people to stay in their homes, for the rest of their lives without the need to move into a Care home. Chief Executive, Nolan Taylor said ‘I am proud to announce that we will provide a facility within Heathfield owned and operated by a local charity, for the benefit of this community.’ The scheme will comprise 48 flats, including at least 17 at affordable rents. Mr Taylor said ‘we hope to be a vital part of the ‘solution’ for decades to come, for some of the many older people encountering loneliness and isolation, within our community.’

Birds of a feather.. “I think we can all agree it has been a turbulent year. I am certainly looking towards next year as a fresh start and rekindling my love for the great outdoors. The wonderful thing about wildlife is it is all around us, be it that you live in the heart of town or in remote countryside. Spending time watching the birds in your garden is very rewarding, the antics of a bathing robin or a flock of long-tailed tits on your suet balls enough to shake off the winter blues. It’s vital we remember to look after our feathered friends at this time of year; fresh water and good quality food in clean feeders will be hugely beneficial to the ever dwindling population of song birds. If you feed sunflower hearts, look out for siskins, redpolls and bramblings, these finches may arrive in gardens in search of food. If you have berry bearing shrubs, check for redwings and fieldfares amongst the thrushes and blackbirds, or if you’re very lucky, this winter looks set to be a bumper year for waxwings too!”
