Phoenix Choir, directed by Michael Fields, presents a reflective commemoration in music of 1914 and what it means to us today. The programme is centred on the English composers of the war years: Vaughan Williams, George Butterworth, Frank Bridge, Hubert Parry, featuring soloists Ansy Boothroyd, soprano, John Hancorn, baritone and Howard Beach, piano. A sing-a-long of WWI popular songs and folk song settings by David Willcocks and John Rutter bring nostalgia for a world that faded after the war. But we begin 400 years previously, with works on the themes of war and loss by the Flemish composer Josquin des Pres and the English Thomas Tallis – which provided inspiration for later commemorative works by Karl Jenkins and others.

Here is a sound bite – “use it or lose it”. Here is another – “you heat your house in winter, you heat your water every day”. Humans have known for thousands of years that the sun has remarkable powers. The evolution of civilisation has allowed us to discover more of these, but we still take much for granted. So here are a few facts: · Solar Energy is infinitely renewable – there are no transport costs and few losses. · In the UK we receive as much as 60% of the solar energy which is received at the equator. · A 2 kilo watt solar energy system can reduce CO2 by 85,676 lbs over its lifetime.
It is only now with concerns about climate change and fossil fuels that a certain urgency has developed. It is undeniable that renewable energy lessons the nation’s dependence on oil and especially foreign oil. Most people now have some knowledge about the benefits of fitting photo voltaic panels on their roof. The Feed In Tariff (FIT) has helped to generate interest. Fewer people know that Solar Thermal panels are not only more efficient, 93% efficient as opposed to about 20% for PV, but there is now support to the tune of 19.2p per kW generated. Solar Thermal panels can save 60-70% of your hot water costs. SolarUk manufactures and installs solar thermal panels here in Sussex and Kent.

What’s On talks to Padstone Natural Stone Tiles
P
adstone Natural Stone Tiles is a professional and friendly natural stone supplier based on the outskirts of Rye, East Sussex. Here you can find their large showroom fitted with over 30 floor displays along with additional wall displays including mosaics, strips and split rock-face. Also on display is a fitted Howdens Kitchen with working re-conditioned AGA and two underfloor heating areas showing that Padstone does more than just stone tiles! At Padstone you will find a friendly and professional team ready to assist you with your next natural stone project, whether it be a conservatory, kitchen and bathroom or entire ground floor. The team at Padstone are well equipped to help you from the very beginning to the very end, including free site visits, full prep specification and large sample bank allowing you to take pieces of stone home to match up all essentials prior to tiling. We caught up with Patrick, owner of the business and asked him a few questions about Padstone; Q. Hi Patrick, firstly, what is Padstone? A. Hi Michael. Okay, Padstone is a natural stone tile supply or supply and fit service based on Salts Farm, Rye. You know, opposite the Camber junction along with Beryl’s Café and Salts Farm Shop just outside Rye in East Guldeford. Here you will find our showroom with extensive displays of natural stone including limestone, granite, travertine and marble. Not only that, but our walls are also fitted with ideas and designs in both strip form, tile form and mosaic form allowing you to really visualise what you can do with stone.
tumbled travertine to honed limestone and flamed basalt, there’s so many to choose from. This is why I built the showroom, to allow customers to come in and see natural stone in its natural form, on the floor or walls. It would be very hard to only have a website and post small samples out to people, so this way people can really envisage their project and choose a stone to match accordingly. It also allows people to walk in and speak with us face to face, giving a real personal, bespoke service, which again is something you wouldn’t get online! Q. Yes that’s very true, I can see how the showroom works now. So you can provide the stone, fit the stone and give advice on the stone. I guess the next question is, what is the cost of the stone, I mean porcelain and ceramics are obviously cheaper I assume? A. (Small laugh) A common misconception and something that can really irritate me sometimes. Yes natural stone can be expensive, but it can also be cheaper than high end porcelains too. Our range starts at around £35.00m2 and extends up to over £100.00m2 but I would say our average stone price is around the £50.00m2 mark, which compared to some porcelains is on par I would say. The biggest money-saver with natural stone is that if its treated well it will last forever. It will never go out of fashion so you won`t have to re-design in a few years time if you want to put your house on the market. Q. So what`s the attraction with natural stone? A. Natural stone has so much more presence and character. Some are packed with fossils like trilobites, ammonites and graptolites
over 100 million years old whilst others have mottled shell fragments and bright veining. On the other hand, others can be plain and neutral with little variation. There is a huge difference between natural beauty and the printed conceptual designs found on a porcelain or ceramic tile, which may be out of date in a few years or even worn off. I have always found there is a reassuring quality with natural stone, one of presence and solidity which will never go out of date – as it’s already millions of years old! Q. That’s a fair comment. Okay, well thank you for your time Patrick, before I go, can you summarise what we have spoken about in some bullet points? A. Okay, here goes; • Can offer supply only, or supply and fit service with full installation and preparatory works. • Friendly, helpful and professional team with expert advice. • Large showroom to visit with extensive range of stone to choose from. • Samples to take away with you on the day, free of charge. • Underfloor heating areas and Howdens Kitchen with working AGA on display. • Competitive prices compared to other stone retailers. • Free site visits and full preparatory specification prior to tiling. • Personal, bespoke service offered, unlike any other showroom. • Website so you can view our full range of stone as well as read more about Padstone. • Can offer local, nationwide & international delivery service (recently sent 140m2 limestone to Bordeaux, France).
Q. Okay, I think I know a bit more about Padstone, now tell me more about your range and what you offer? A. We offer both a supply only and supply and fit service as this allows flexibility, so you can still purchase stone from us even if you have your own tiler but should you have no tiler, we can fit it for you. Regarding the range, the core stones are limestone, granite, marble, travertine and basalt. These stones come in an array of different finishes and sizes, from polished marble to

Cutting Garden snippets June… lots to do, everything is growing well at
this time of year. The new plantings continue, and Dahlias are going in the ground. These have been potted up under protection as dry tubers a couple of months ago, and are now growing well and ready to go in. There is a gorgeous selection of shapes and colours, from small pom-poms to dinner plate size blooms in white, pinks, orange and chocolate red. A huge number of flowers are produced from each plant – just keep cutting! They are hungry plants so manure the soil well. Sweet peas also like a good soil, and will produce masses of blooms if cut regularly. Put up a good
support of netting, tie in regularly and cut cut cut! As with a lot of plants, new growth is very attractive to slugs – pellets or slug traps are really essential to protect your carefully nurtured seedlings. Weeds are also growing well unfortunately. A time consuming job, but pulling the big perennial weeds before they flower and set seed is a high priority! Small weed seedlings can be successfully hoed on a dry/ breezy day – they will be uprooted and will shrivel and die on the soil surface.
Happy growing and cutting! Sussex Cutting Garden. See our advertisement on P.51
Don’t just take our word for it … “Following the storms of early 2014, a substantial Corsican Pine had begun to list dangerously in our garden, threatening a deep pond and a boundary fence. Nick Danson quickly came to pronounce judgment (“That’s got to come out”), and advise on talking to the local tree officer. As soon as we were given the go-ahead, Nick rearranged his schedule and was on site the next day. With NO access to our garden, Nick had to chop the tree up and carry everything through the hallway – he did so cleanly and quickly. We have recommended Nick in the past and would obviously do so again.” Mr & Mrs Brooker, Old Town, Hastings.

SPRING INTO SUMMER AT PASHLEY MANOR GARDENS ‘One of the finest gardens in England’ the award winning gardens at Pashley are open until the end of September from Tuesday to Saturday and on Special Event Days. ‘Roses, Raspberries and Radishes’ marks the roses and kitchen garden being at their midsummer best – there will be a chance to ask gardener’s questions, a fantastic selection of Peter Beales potted roses on sale and the café will be serving a menu celebrating produce from the garden. This is followed at the end of June by the Summer Plant, Garden and Produce Fair when visitors can browse and buy at local stalls as well as enjoying the gardens.
During a day out at the beautiful gardens you should ‘allow time to sample the fabulous homemade food and warm hospitality at arguably the best garden café in the county, much of which is sourced from the abundant kitchen garden’ (Leigh Clapp in ‘Sussex Life’). ollowing on from the success of the first two ELF evenings we’re pleased to announce that June is going to be even more exciting, with a new set of musicians and yet another venue. ELF is a monthly festival of music and the arts providing a forum for local musicians, artists, dramatists and comedians to showcase their talents in a variety of venues around the historical 1066 town of Battle on every last Friday of the month. Some of the venues will have an art exhibit and host at least six musicians at some point during the evening, so you can stay in one place or move around your favourite venues. Don’t worry if you missed the first two, July is going to be even bigger and better with the addition of Comedy in some of the venues around the town and Drama and Dance on The Abbey Green during the daytime. Many of the retailers in the town will stay open later and have special offers just for the ELF event. ELF will continue on Every Last Friday of the month throughout the year in pubs, restaurants, retail outlets and on the Abbey Green and in Old Ladies Court. Many of the venues will have food and drink specials to celebrate this event so please book early if you would like to dine. All venues will have a prize draw to help raise money for our adopted charities, Demelza and Oxjam. SENLAC CLASSIC CAR SHOW AND CRAFT FAYRE Bodiam Sunday 15th June 2014 Once again Father’s Day is being celebrated with the best Classic Car Show in the area. For over 20 years the Rotary Club of Senlac has worked hard to put on a show that year on year has expanded to include an impressive array of cars, commercial and military vehicles as well as dozens of craft and charity stalls, children’s’ rides and day long entertainment. A show for the whole family, food outlets include the traditional and very popular BBQ as well as the equally popular tea and cake stall together with the ‘Senlac Arms’ fully licensed bar. The show last year was the biggest ever and well over £6000 was given to local and Rotary charities. The 300 or so vehicles formed the centrepiece of a great show topped off by the appearance on schedule, of a sole Spitfire which enthralled the large crowd as it looped and circled the show ground. The very sound of that Merlin engine was sufficient to bring back a whole range of memories for many show goers. What makes this show different? It is all about families, all about our shared history and all about a celebration of Dad! It also all about co-operation; each year we are stunned by the support from local Bodiam people, from local businesses from the classic car show fraternity and from the generous crowds who come to have a fun day and in so doing help to add to the £100,000 total which the show has raised for charity. From 10.00 am until 5.00pm the showground is the place to be. Further information and entry details from 01424 754560

Cycling at Bedgebury Forest To me, cycling isn’t just a business, it’s a lifestyle. Everything we do is focused on accessible adventure and helping to get people cycling. Providing over 30,000 hires a year to all ages and abilities, our customers love the challenge and excitement that biking provides. It’s about fun, health, being outdoors, spending quality family time, excitement, learning, & discovery. We’re not just about bike hire though. It’s great for health, fitness, weight loss, reducing stress and the risks of chronic illness. For many it’s nostalgic. The smell of wet bark, pine and earth bring back memories of wooded rides as a child, for others it’s about fitness and challenge or just spending quality time in a great environment. For us it’s about experience, customer service, quality, integrity and professionalism. It’s about being in long-term relationships with our customers from the first time they walk in or make an enquiry.
Open all year, Bedgebury is an award winning venue and was voted one of the top places to ride by the Daily Telegraph and The Times. A Two Week Walkabout with Southern Cross Travel
T
raversing Australia from top to bottom, or vice versa, is an incredible experience and is easily achieved in a fortnight. The ‘Aussie Specialists’ at Southern Cross Travel recommend this Two Week Walkabout which combines two very different cities, World HeritageListed national parks, stunning natural scenery, beautiful wineries, and an epic train journey through the mythical outback. Fly into the vibrant, tropical capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin. The city is located on a peninsula with the sea on three sides, and due to its tropical climate it is very hot, humid and wet in the northern hemisphere winters (the Aussie Wet season) and very warm, dry and sunny in the northern hemisphere summers (the Aussie Dry season). After a day or two in Darwin, experience the Kakadu National Park on an outback camping safari for three or four days. We also recommend a day trip to the Litchfield National Park, which is a must do! After your time in Darwin, board the iconic Ghan train, travelling from Darwin through the heart of the outback to Adelaide in South Australia. Enjoy two nights in luxury onboard this great train, marvelling at the spectacular landscapes from the comfort of your cabin. Once you arrive in Adelaide, there’s plenty to start exploring. Visit the award-winning wineries, gorgeous
beaches, superb restaurants, buzzing markets and the famous Adelaide Oval cricket ground. A twenty minute tram ride brings you from the heart of the city to the popular beachside suburb of Glenelg. Here you can swim with the dolphins, go sailing and enjoy the dining opportunities on Jetty Road before returning to the city for a dose of culture at one of the various museums or the National Wine Centre of Australia. You may also like to hire a car and take a few days to explore the wildlife haven of Kangaroo Island before your Two Week Walkabout comes to an end. Australia is a vast and diverse country and the opportunities for Two Week Walkabouts are

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff ” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.
If you have any questions about letting your property, or would like free, no obligation advice please call us on 01424 751805. - 64 -

o far the weather is behaving itself this year, many of our garden birds are able to find plenty of natural food around, the Blue Tits using my nest box at home are working their socks off, regularly bringing in caterpillars and spiders to rear their five little chicks. Again this year the Jackdaws and Starlings are chomping away through the suet fat balls, to slow consumption
down a little I had to change one of my feeders for a new caged one, this still allowed my smaller visitors to have a tuck in but the bigger “bullies” and the ever increasing Starling gang ( which are probably the most entertaining birds) had to squabble over one less feeder. It is always a good idea to keep feeders topped up this time of year, although they may not be as busy it is vital for our birdy friends to have back-

up if natural food becomes scarce for whatever reason. Here are four chicks from both my garden and the shop. Allan ..... feathers wild bird care. www.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk
